5-0 out of 5 stars In my heart, I believe Pern is a real place.
Let me get the criticism out of the way first. Over the years, the unending franchise of Pern books has diluted the original magic of this book. After the first two series (this first trilogy, the Masterharper trilogy) and arguably Moreta's story (worth a comfortable 4 stars), McCaffery started trying to fit Pern into a scientific jigsaw puzzle so that it would "make sense." In my view, that was a major mistake, because the glory of this first book, and what made it a true classic, is the degree to which the reader contributes to the world the author created.
5-0 out of 5 stars Dragonflight
This is one of the few books that I've read that can be praised completely for writing, originality, characters, and plot. Anne McCaffrey's story is almost flawless, and it leaves you with the feeling that you've just read a completely satisfying book and you may just have to hitchhike your way to the bookstore if that's what it takes to get the next one.
2-0 out of 5 stars boring writing with good story.....
I LOVE to read. In my life, I've probably spent more time reading than sleeping, altogether. I pretty much like every book I've ever read. My friend will hate a book, I will love it, and then they will point out that I never hate books, and that I am fiercly loyal to every book I read. That said, I HATED this book. It was boring. I wanted very badly to like it, because it had a unique storyline. I couldn't get into it. I kept hoping it would get interesting. It didn't. I kept leaving the book and getting up to do something....finally, I decided to get it over with and bring this book to camp with me. A camp where you have one hour of quiet time so I could finally force myself through this book. I brought no other books with me...and I still have no idea why I decided to put myself through that kind of torture. Needless to say, I threw this book back in my suitcase, and borrowed my friend's Harry Potter and read that for the millioneth time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dragonquest audio CD
Dick Hill, as on other Pern audio CDs does a masterful job.I've read the books, but listening to this CD, particularly as I drive to and from work, is a joy. This series by Anne McCaffrey is my all-time favorite and I never tire of it.This audio CD brings it to life beautifully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dragonquest, by Anne McCaffrey
This sci-fi classic has long been one of my favorites. The whole Pern series in fantastic! Anne McCaffrey has created a world that most readers will find so engaging that they will find themselves thinking about it and its characters as if it were some real place and real people/creatures "out there". I still find myself wishing that there were real fire lizards and Pernese dragons here on Earth! Having started reading the Pern series while in college, I am now passing on my enthusiasm for these books to my teenage children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dragonquest- One of the Best
I think Dragonquest is one of the best in the entire Pern series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Puff the Magic...Fire Lizard ?
"Dragonsinger" is the second book in Anne McCaffery's "Harper Hall Trilogy" and pickes up directly where "Dragonsong" left off. Having lived holdless, practically outrun Thread and impressed nine fire lizards, Menolly is travelling to the Harper Hall with Master Robinton, Furthermore, following Petiron's recommendations. She has been accepted as a student - meaning that, one day, she will become a Harper.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best of a great series
The first two books of the harper hall trilogy are the best of the series. Especially for pre-teen and teen-age girls who are exploring their path in life, thsse books inspire. Anne McCaffery is at her best when describing human nature, in a rich imaginative context. The dragons are here, and even better, small ones which add humor and a personal touch. The complex social and political landscape of Pern is here. Moral questions are posed and explored realistically. But the stories focus on the personal journey of Menolly in particular. Reading these two books for the 100th time (I'm certanly no longer a teen!) I still cringe, laugh, root for our heros, and cry with happiness when good wins out. These books move right along, carrying you with them. What a great adventure!

4-0 out of 5 stars Reign of Fire Lizards
"Dragondrums" is the third book in Anne McCaffery's "Harper Hall Trilogy" and is set on the world of Pern. Three years have now passed since "Dragonsinger", when Menolly first arrived at the Harper Hall. She remains a favourite of Masterharper Robinton, an still enjoys the company of her nine fire lizards. However, there have been some changes. Now a journeyman, she is much more confident and no-one questions her place at the Hall : in fact, she now seems to hold a certain amount of authority. However, although Menolly appears in "Dragondrums", she isn't the central character : this book tells the story of her friend and ally, Piemur.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dragondrums
I have always liked this book and have recently bought it to add it to my Harper Hall collection. Honestly though I enjoy the first two books in this series more. I used to read Anne McCaffrey a lot more when I was younger. Now, though, I usually just like to re-visit with old friends like Menolly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not What Expected but Great Read
I was hoping that this third installment of the Harper Hall trilogy would be about my favorite character, Menolly. Instead, the book is about Piemur, Menolly's friend, whose golden voice changes with puberty, and he is forced to reassess his life. Piemur runs away from Harper Hall and finds adventure in the jungles of the Southern Continent. Menolly is mentioned here and there, so we find out what happens to her. Maybe it's because I'm female, but I just couldn't get as attached to Piemur, as immersed in his world. Still a great book by one of my favorite authors. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dragonsong : Undetailed and Messy
In the book, the main character Menolly, lives a very harsh lifestyle. She lives in the Half Circle Village. There she usually plays a harp but when she cuts and paralyzes her right hand, she is unable to play. Then she goes out, finds and lives with 9 fire lizards and their eggs.
4-0 out of 5 stars Dungeons and...Fire Lizards ?
"Dragonsong" is the first book in Anne McCaffery's "Harper Hall Trilogy" and is set on the world of Pern. Unfortunately, it's prone to attack from Thread - spores that grow on a neighbouring planet and, at times, can bridge the gap between the two worlds. Thread is deadly to all life : it can only be killed by fire and it's progress is halted by fire and stone. Fortunately, Pern's inhabitants have a useful ally in the battle against thread : dragons. Not only capable of flying and breathing fire, Pern's dragons can also teleport. They also form a telepathic bond with their riders.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Unicorn Girl ( Acorna)
This book was surprisingly disappointing. The author is well known and well loved for good reasons. However the main chracter was poorly developed. It was difficult to feel much empathy for her. The plot was good and the conflicts clear. However a friend of mine said itwas like reading a book without a main character. I agree.

1-0 out of 5 stars Morality
At first I really enjoyed this book but as it progressed I found it to be quite disturbing morally. The main Character, Acorna, was innocent and pure (at least as far as I read) but the behavior of those who are the antagonists are vividly described in a manner I found extremely disturbing especially on the abuse of young children. It got so bad I couldn't finish it. I was extremely disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars A True Hero
Picture this, a green pod shaped object drifting toward your ship.Oh and this isn't just any normal ship, this ship is totally different from any other ship. This ship is a space ship that is where this great story's plot is placed. As I read the beginning of this book I found it interesting and wanted to keep reading more.I found it having a great plot and was wonderfully descriptive. The characters were also easy to follow and to me that is very important in books. My only problem with this book was that it was a little slow for my taste, but don't let that hold you back from reading this book, that is just one person's opinion. My favorite part is at the last 5 chapters of the book, that's when it gets really interesting. Its when the book finally picks up the pace and makes me want to never put it down.I love how the beginning is too, it has a lot of detail and is very descriptive, the only part that made me want to stop reading is in the middle, that's when it got a little confusing.

Editorial Review

Anne McCaffrey is back with this precious, well-researched yarn that follows a Celtic lad in service to King Arthur. Set in fifth-century Britain, McCaffrey's first historical novel for young adults rejects a fantastical, Hollywood treatment of King Arthur in favor of realism and solid storytelling. Take away the Round Table and the usual knights-in-shining-armor hoo-hah, and you're left with an engaging, endearing chapter from the life of Artos, Read more

I collect every book I can find about Arthur and his universe.McCaffrey's book fits excellently into the collection. Although perhaps written for young adults, any reader will find this book will written, exciting and solid.McCaffrey's writing style, as always, carries the reader through the book in magnificent style.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fresh look at an oft-told tale
As a parent and soon-to-be teacher, I'm always on the lookout for books that are unique. Something that may take a new spin on an old tale, or may present my kids with a story that they might not have known before.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good young adult novel, nothing more
Good young adult novel, which I am giving to my elder kidlet (age 9) to read now. He'll enjoy the mixture of horses and King Arthur, I think. Probably the only McCaffrey I ever intend to voluntarily give him. If he finds the rest of those books, he'll do it of his own accord. No sense making him read sci-fi slop if he can avoid it. 4 stars of 5, as a kid's book.If I rated it for adults, 2 stars of 5. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In the Year 2525 . . . Well, Okay, the Year 2041
Published in 1991, this collection of stories posed each author the question-what would the world be like 50 years from now?Veteran SF and fantasy writer Jane Yolen presents readers with a collection of delightful stories on the advent of her fiftieth year. These range from the introspective, to the hilarious, to the gravely frightening.Ten of these twelve tales are original to this production, and all of them are worth a read. This anthology is directed at a young teen audience, as evidenced by the introduction by the editor.Jane poses the question to her reader, what will the world be like in 50 years, when they are in their sixties.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best collection of sci-fi stories about the future!
This collection of stories are all from the year 2041.All have different things that the world will be like in 2041.One story is "Ear" which is about the people of 2041 have to wear an amp on their ear to hear. Another is "Whose Gonna Rock Us Home?" which is about a boy who runs away from home with just him and his guitar on the streets full of murderous gangs.So I think this is the best collection of sci-fi stories about the future of the year.Trust me you should add this to your science fiction book collection ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great ending to the trilogy;
I love the CRYSTAL SINGER trilogy----KILLASHANDRA is my favorite of the three, although I like this one as well.Make sure you read the three CRYSTAL SINGER books in the proper order (CRYSTAL SINGER first, then KILLASHANDRA, then CRYSTAL LINE)---if you don't, you'll have a hard time following what is going on.This end to the trilogy does have a few minor flaws and inconsistencies, but as always with McCaffrey's writing, her plot and universe is so compelling, you'll keep reading anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice finale to a wonderful trilogy
While Crystal Line is NOT my favorite book in this trilogy, it is still a good read.It is great to go back to Ballybran and cut crystal with Lars and Killashandra. My biggest problem with this book is that there are some inconsistencies/errors in it that were seemingly missed in the editing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fine end to a great serise
Killasandra and the love of her life, Lars, have both become experienced crystal singers. They enjoy all the perks of the job, lots of credit and long life, but they also suffer the draw backs, loss of memory. But, while Lars wants to remember the past, Killasandra doesn't care. This will eventually come between them.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Renegades of Pern
I was somewhat dissapointed by this book. This is the 2nd one in the Pern Series I read, I had just finished all the Wyers of Pern before.I really enjoyed the large role the dragons got to play in Wyers of Pern, this book lacks it.You don't really get to see into the telepathic relationship the riders have with their dragons. It's exciting, but I really miss the dragons. The wyers are put into a bad light early on, and I was confused about the Leadership of Benden Wyer, when did F'lar and Lessa take over? The book is okay, but she's done better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Renegades of pern
I recomend this book if you are reading the entire Pern series in chronological order. Renegades will seem choppy if you read it alone and most of the secnes will not make sense if read before the other books. Renegades fills in a lot of time gaps that reading the others leave out. I recomend this book to all Pern fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pern readers, don't miss this one!
When I first read this book, years ago, I remember being a little disappointed. It wasn't as good as the Dragonflight trilogy or even as good as the Harper Hall trilogy.I'm re-reading the series in chronological order now, and I want to warn people not to listen to the negative reviews!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Art
This is strictly a story book, and wonderfully done. This is not meant to be a reference book.I love this book and keep it displayed in my living room.

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting and completly worth your time
I found this Anne McCaffrey book to be interesting, especially since I happened to read most of the books, or knew most of the storys referenced to in A Diversity of Dragons. The simple characters (including herself) were straightfoward, yet evasive, and the plot was complicated in its simplicity. The art work was extrordinary, and could only be displayed properly in the large book. Everytime I look at it I am amazed at the generous detail. All in all I believe that this book rates a five star for its simple honesty. Niether defending dragons or bashing them, but sharing their truths. This book is completely worth your time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures, though...
I got this book because I was doing a report about Dragons indifferent mythologies, and because I'm a fan of McCaffrey's.My firstreaction was: "What a HUGE book!" They could have made asmaller edition of it so it would actually fit my bookshelf. The pictures were beautiful, although it was sometimes slightly hard to tell which picture went with which story. The plot was okay, since it obviously wasn't meant to be a very fascinating one, although the ending completely let me down.An index of the dragons and page number references would also have proved extremely helpful, since the mythical and new-age dragons were completely scattered together. The worst part of the book I think were the quotes. Some of them got me interested in the books and made me add them to my wishlist, but most were just utterly boring. Also, at the end where the dragons were listed in tables, I found them to be scattered around completely wrong.Somebody seemed to have messed up with their computer. The reason I'm still giving this book 4 stars is for the paintwork, though. If you like fantasy art, this book will be excellent for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars, Really...
Having read and loved both Dragonflight and Dragonquest before I picked up this one, I was assured ahead of time that this would be another McCaffrey masterpiece, a story of Pern where you could be tipped into the book and not want to resurface. I wasn't wrong- there is plenty on the old heroes Lessa and F'lar, and of course the amazing, enormous, telepathic dragons that fight the Thread of Pern. I read this book over three days and didn't want it to end.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fitting End to Great Trilogy
The white Dragon is the third book in Anne McCaffery's Dragonriders of Pern trilogy. In my opinion, the Pern books are McCaffery's best. In this book Jaxom, the son of the evil Lord Jax who invaded the kingom of Ruatha when Lessa was a young girl, is struggling with his own identity. He knows that one day he will be the Lord Holder of Ruatha, but the kingdom is right now under excellent stewardship and Jaxom just doesn't quite know what he's going to do with his life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The third book-Amazing
This story introduces two new fabulous characters, Lord jaxom and his dragon Ruth. This is truly a great book, and it's interesting storyline and great writing, as well as the bond between Ruth and Jaxom make this a great and wonderful story to read. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
When I purchased this book (at a bookstore) I had no idea that it was collection of short stories. If I had just read the online reviews I would of thought twice about purchasing this book. The short storyabout the girl who can hear dragons was great but as I proceed to the next chapter I was confused. I was flipping through the front and back of the book wondering if I missed something and why I was reading about some planet being colonized. It was a major let down. The publishers really need to address this because I was so disappointed. I was even more disappointed because I just finished reading another book of short stories (this one was clearly marked on the cover) and was looking forward to something a little more involved or so I thought

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of short stories from Anne McCaffrey
I enjoyed all of the stories in this collection, but then, I'm an avid Anne McCaffrey fan: I loved all of the Pern books, and I thought -it couldn't get better than this. Then, I loved the Pegasus series (The Rowan, Damia, and the rest). But, the Crystal Singer books are great, too - you get the idea!Theseshort stories evoked worlds that were familiar and worlds that were new to me - each world interesting and complex, a treat to visit. As usual, Anne's stories lift the spirits with hopeful endings, except the one sad story "Habit is an Old Horse" - skip it if you prefer. Two additional treats in this book: 24 lovely illustrations and eight autobiographical pages by Anne herself.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Ending
The story itself is wonderful but,I do not like how you decived me into thinking that the whole book was about the girl who heard dragons. If you are going to print a short story with another story that is very boring the least you coulddo is to tell thse people in bold, large print, and dark letters.

5-0 out of 5 stars If I had only known ...
Very good book for kids - and quite pleasant for adults but If I had understood it was a kids book I might not have bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars another great
This is one of McCaffrey's shorter stories for juveniles. It is about a princess who runs away to avoid an arranged marriage with a much older man.The princess uses her knowledge of flora and fauna in order to escape and survive - but her knowledge is all gleaned from books, so it is more difficult than she believes. However, she perseveres, and she is joined by a waif of a boy who has been beaten and starved. They form a friendship that enables them to survive in the woods on their own - but without either knowing the other's past.I took this to be a story about trust, faith, and love.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Anne McCaffrey
This was the first Anne McCaffrey book I read. It's my favorite book by her so far. The plot is absorbing and different. Meanne and Wisp both hide their pasts from each other (for good reason), and yet if they had revealed their histories things might not have turned out better after all. The language and art are intricate yet delicate. Absolutely stunning. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An epic book
I read this book right after Dragonsdown, and I found it really good. It shows you quite a different background from the Pern Series, but it is nevertheless a really good book in which old Pern and today Pern meet to give birth to a new Pern. I suggest it to every fan of the Dragonriders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfying
This is a better follow up to the Original Dragonrider series overall than the Renegades of Pern.It focuses on the attempts of most of the major characters from the original Dragonriderand Harper Hall series to alter the course of the red star to end the threat of thread for future generations with the help from AIVAS, the intelligent computer undearthed at the original settlers' landing area. It jumps around between characters a lot like Renegades, but it has a more cohesive story line. The ending is poignant and somehow fitting.
5-0 out of 5 stars All the Weyrs of Pern
Another wonderful tale, continuing to enlarge the world of Pern. The characters are vivid, the story line holds true, and the saga continues. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favourite B&B book
City Who Fought is an amazing book which I really love. The characters are all very real and three-demensional. I found myself so drawn into the story that I forgot about many other things, including my favourite tv show. Istayed up til...bout 2:30 AM reading this book, so that I could find outwhat happened to Simeon, Joat, Channa, and the rest of them. My favouritecharacter was Simeon, of course, but Joat, Channa, Joseph, Seld, Patsy,Chaundra -- okay, all of them, just about -- are also wonderfullythree-demensional. Simeon is my favourite brain -- favourite character --from any of Anne McCafferey's B&B books. The only problems I foundwith this book were a) that it was much more militaristic than I like, butI knew that when I began reading it, so I can only blame myself, and b) theKolnari were a bit..flat, and 2-demensional, not something I personallylike in a book, especially for the villians. One thing that I read inanother review of this book was that it was not a good book for children, having a lot of sex and violence in it. My opinion on this is: It's notMEANT for children! It's an adults book, and the person who wrote thatreview should have realized that.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is highly insulting to women!
This book is highly insulting to women! He sexual alludes to situations that either cannot happen according to the storylines or physically happen according to human biology. This did surprised me since I have read many ofher works of fiction. I cannot believe that Anne McCaffrey would haveanything to do with this novel. It is highly offensive to women and is notworth reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Brain/Brawn tale....
I've been a McCaffrey fan for over a decade, I've read 98% of her books and the Brain/Brawn books have become my favorites.Joat, Channa and Amos are interesting characters, though I think Simeon steals the show.Whilethere is more violence than most of Ms. McCaffrey's other works, with theexception of the Generation Warriors trilogy, I feel it fits the plot andsituation and is not excessive. The comic relief is great and the plotinteresting and solid.A must read along with The Ship Who Sang and TheShip Who Searched. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WELL, I FINALLY STARTED THIS SERIES......
After years of putting it off, why, I don't know, I finally broke down and started. What a pity.I have certainly been missing some very good reading.Anne McCaffrey in certainly a natural story teller and so far I am finding her delightful.I realize that this book probably is not truely a good example of the actual Dragonrider Series, but being somewhat familiar with the story line, I found it a good place to start.Yes, there was a bit more "tech talk" than I usually enjoy in a fantasy type novel, but that is okay as it was quite necessary, in this case, to tell the story. It, the tech talk, was not overwhelming and did add to the story which would have been difficult to understand the origins of the Dragonriders without. The story runs smoothly, is interesting and I felt the character development was quite good. All in all, late though it may be, I am glad I started reading these books and will now start with the next.Recommend this one highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Back to the beginning
My first book from the Pern series was the White Dragon (Dragonriders of Per), it was the on that won me on this saga. I was really thrilled when I found a book which was going to tell the story of the first dwellers of Per and the book did exactly that:it tells the story from the beginning, the only fault may be the end: too sudden, left me with a sens of anticipatin non fully satisfied. Made me look for next book thoug.
5-0 out of 5 stars Origins of the Dragonriders
This was the first book from Anne McCaffrey's dragon series that I read.I am typically not a big fan of dragon fantasy books, and so had not read anything in the series. This book starts with the founding of the colony on Pern and tells the origins of the dragonriders. It is not the first book in the series, but it is the first book chronologically in the storyline.

3-0 out of 5 stars Contacting the "shipfish"
The "shipfish" are the dolphins of pern and they once helped they once accompanied the earlierest settlers of pern. Altough he child (Readis) who is not understood by his parents is reminiscent of Menolly's story, there's so much to like. I just wish there was more about the dolphins and less about Readis. Pern also has changed a lot in this book and what I think made Pern interesting is how people interacted and were dependant upon each other though the re-discovery of the dolphins and the events that take place after-ward will keep your eyes glued to the page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great kids' book
5th grader is really enjoying this book.It is a challenging read but still in her interest level.
