5-0 out of 5 stars Baby loves it ! ! !...
My 3 month old son loves these illistrations by David McPhail. I was surprised to see his intrest in this classy, sophisticated, large hardback. My 7 year daughter old has enjoyed it for years. We also used it as an early reader until it was completely memorized. We loved it even more when her great grandmother (my Mamaw) told us how her mother used to recite this poem to her every night when she was a little girl.Interesting notes about author and poem are inside the paper cover. Great classic poem by Eugene W. Field. Take good care of this beautiful book its a keeper to hand down for generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful poem by Field, and lovely illustrations!
If you are familiar with Eugene Field, this is one of his best children's poems (in my opinion.) The illustrations definitely do justice to the mystical, dreamy poem. I do agree with the review, however, that the mother who is tucking in her daughter looks more like her sister than a mom! Highly recommend this book to for any little one; it's a GREAT bedtime story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wynken, Blynken, & Nod is an enchanting, magical tale
that is as captivating as it is beautiful. It's a wonderful bedtime tradition, for both children and parents. This amazing poem is a timeless classic; there's always something new to discover from the entrancing journey of our trio of fishermen! It's perfect for people of all ages. Comealong, and bring somebody you love on the voyage on Wynken, Blynken, andNod; you won't regret it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Halloween
I didn't think my (young) 3-year-old would sit through this book. The text looked long, the art very detailed. But I was WRONG! This has been our nightly story for weeks and I confess: I'm not bored. It's the perfect touch--not very frightening and a reassuring story of self-confidence. Even my 2-year-old pops in for the occasional ghost or pig (no, he's not quite ready for the whole story although Curious George has kept him seated).
5-0 out of 5 stars A really wonderful book!
I bought this book for my daughter to celebrate Halloween. It is her favorite holiday so we read this book year round. The story is about a pig named John who is too scared to go trick or treating on Halloween with his friends.John stays back at the house as his friends go on without him. After they leave a real witch comes calling for some treats. When she sees that John only has candy to hand out she decides to teach hime how to make some real Halloween treats. They whip up such heavenly connoctions as pies, tarts, mousse, sundaes, and cookies. All of the witch's monster friends show up for a real Halloween party. Finally the witch tells John that they have to leave while it is still night out. When John's pig friends come back cold and tired they are amazed to find all of the treats that John has prepared. When John goes to bed he realizes he is no longer afraid of Halloween and he dreams of all of the new friends he has made. The illustrations in this book are great and the story is really sweet. My daughter loves this book and I really enjoy reading it to her. This book will really put you into a Halloween mood.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was a wonderfully sweet story of Halloween
I fell in love with this book from the start.I loved how John Pig portrayed his feelings about Halloween. There was so many adorables pictures that you begin to see new things in the pictures that you didn'tsee before. The witch is great - My kids loved that idea that she was afun witch. The food she made sounded heavenly... What a great book forkids.... My children adore this book as do I. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to teach children about the consequences of lying
We checked this book out from the library. Our three year old had a problem with telling us the whole truth. This book really sunk in for her and she was terified of the monster who comes out when the little boy in the story lies. We told her that if we catch her in a lie then we will get out the monster. It has really helped so much and she no longer stretches the truth. Great book and I plan on buying my own copy for future reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars LovelyLife Lesson
I bought my five year old son this book to try to teach him a little about lying. He really enjoyed it and wanted me to read it over and over. It was clever how the authors used a monster to illustrate the point, as most kids love monster stories.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible - Reinforces Negative Stereotype
I want to throw this book in the trash. In fact I am going to right now. This book appears to be a way to teach children a lesson about lying. It has a sinister not-so-subtle message reinforcing negative stereotypes about fat people. That fat people are enormous, dumb and sloppy. This is terrible to read to children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite baby-toddler books
This is one of my very favorite books from the baby and preschool years. My daughter is 7 years old now, and I just came across "If You Were My Bunny" again while picking out baby shower presents for my best friend."If You Were My Bunny" sets new poems to old lullaby tunes. The illustrations are charming, the length is just right, and it makes a perfect bedtime ritual. This is a special and memorable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful bedtime or anytime book to share with your little one(s)...
We've had this book as part of our bedtime routine for years. All three of our younger boys truly enjoy the story - especially since it is set to various tunes of familiar lullabies.
5-0 out of 5 stars Our favorite book
I found a copy of this book while I was pregnant and just picked it up without really looking at it. What wonderful luck as this has been one of our absolute favorites (which says a lot, considering that we easily have over 200 children's books)! We've even had to replace it because we literally wore it out!

This story has a delightful message about the power we have to influence others, even if that influence is out of our awareness. Always a joy to read...

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Fabulous Book
This book is a simply wonderful book to share with chilren. It is beautifully written and illustrated, and has a great message to share as well. I am an elementary music teacher, and read it to my classes every year. It has become a mainstay in the few short years I've owned it, and my students love it as much as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Lesson for Us All

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow Wow Wow
"Over the top" is a perfect description of this book.Like "Mole Music", it is impossible to describe how perfect this book is - you just have to read the story. The perfection of McPhail's books goes beyond the story. The story is exciting, the pictures good. But it's also in the values that are reflected throughout the book that are actually incidental to the storyline.A strong woman character and a positive mother image. An equally admirable father and together they present a positive image of family.A strong, responsible, compassionate and incredibly imaginative child. An adventerousome, smart, caring BOY who loves to read. The perfection of McPhail's books also lie in what you don't find in them - you don't find the sexist or stereotyped images of either females or males; you don't find senseless violence or use of physical force as the only form of adventure; you don't find negative/pejorative stereotypes of the adults such as parents, teachers and other community members, that children encounter in their lives.McPhail has the creativity to present good stories without having to use negative stereotypes to make himself amusing or engaging. Our 2 1/2 year old son loved this book and we felt good about reading it to him, and we enjoyed it ourselves. It is also a good book for those concerned about the violence that children are exposed to in tv, movies and books. This story provides children with a broader look at how these types of characters can be used in imaginative play and gives more depth to understanding the characters (so perhaps playing pirates doesn't have to only be taking a stick, pretending it's a sword and hitting your friend with it.)The mother is also a great alternative to the sexist and weak portrayl of most female characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Edward and the Pirates
This is an over the top children's book. The illustrations are wonderfully done and the dialogue between the characters is challenging but very readable. I have used this book as a read aloud to classes from 1st grade up to 3rd grade and all have loved it! Edward is an intelligent young boy who loves to read...my students are drawn to this and are inspired to become better readers themselves. Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars all-around great book about pirates and imagination
McPhail's picture book _Edward and the Pirates_ is about a young reader named Edward. Sometimes his imagination carries him away.Usually he gets involved in a book, and then he imagines himself in the plot, or imagines the plot coming to life. Then he goes to one of his favorite places, the library. He finds a book on pirates which begins "Some pirate treasure has never been found."Later, Edward takes the book home, begins to read, and then sometime during the night he imagines a pirate adventure which involves his library book, his parents, and a gang of ruthless-looking (but tame enough for a toddler) pirates.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars David McPhail is a master children's book author/illustrator!

Not only do both girls love this book now, but they can identify with what is happening...they love to cuddle up in my husband's lap as he reads the book to both of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Parents AND Toddlers
My two year old son LOVES this book and has been known to request that it be read as many as five times in a row! Good thing that the rhymes and pictures are clever and hilarious. A great addition to your toddler (and up) library as it is a book that both you and your child will enjoy reading again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pigs Gone Wild
I became a big fan of David McPhail's Pig books after reading his colorful and very funny "Pigs Ahoy."This earlier book again chronicles the age-old theme of man vs. pig with creative rhymes, chaotic scenes, and vivid, imaginative illustrations.
5-0 out of 5 stars Piggy Delight for a Noisy Night
What a pleasure this little book is! The art is striking and hilarious, and the rhyming text is smooth, clever, and never forced or awkward. My daughter adores the boisterous piggies and their many guises: ballerina piggies! Clown piggies! Baseball piggies!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best stories ever!
This is one of the most incredibly sweet and moving stories I have had the pleasure of listening to.Our school librarian read it to my class this week. The storyline of a young boy losing his teddy bear is compelling and engaging for young children. My class watched spellbound as they listened to what happened to both the boy and the bear after being separated. And rejoiced at the bear and the boy being reunited (though many had questions about the "old man" as the boy picked up the bear). The boy's unselfishness at allowing the "old man" to keep the bear rather than taking it back gave way to an intersting discussion after the story was over. For me, as an adult, it was very moving.I was nearly in tears by the time the story ended. The idea that an old man finds his only friend in a small stuffed bear is both endearing and sad at the same time. This is an incredible book that should be in anyone's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars "All you need is Love"
"Once upon a time," I had no use for children's literature. Then I had children. Now I am fascinated by the genre and the humanizing influence it can have on children and "grown-ups" alike. There are few writers in the business who can match McPhail's artistry. There are many silly, fun and entertaining children's books on the market-my favorites include "Don't Let the Pidgeon Drive the Bus," and "Click,Clack,Moo Cows that Type"- however, very few children's books can rival McPhail's enlightened and didactic treasures. "The Teddy Bear" contains some invaluable lessons for any person who aspires to become more fully human.
5-0 out of 5 stars sweet story we all can learn from
This book is about a little boy who loves his teddy bear very much.He takes him everywhere he goes. One day he leaves the bear behind on accident at a restaurant. The owners toss the bear in the trash where the bear is found by a homeless man.The little boy is very sad but over time replaces the bear with other toys. The bear has made the homeless man very happy. One day the man lays the bear on a bench and the little boy just happens to walk by and thee the bear! He's glad to see him and pick him up to take home with him. The homeless man is upset and start to make a big scene looking for the bear. The little boy is filled with compassion for the homeless man and returns the bear.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big Brown Bear (Green Light Readers)
This is a great beginning book. Ny first grader really enjoyed it. He was able to manage most of the words in the book, yet it was not too easy. Hethought it was funny and enjoyed predicting what the bear would do next. Hesummed it up at the end by saying "this book was really cool!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Emma's Pet
Emma's Pet is a very cute story about Emma's search for a big, soft, cuddly pet. In her search she tries all sorts of animals. First she finds a bug, but it isn't cuddly. Then in order she finds a mouse, bird, frog, snake, fish, dog, and turtle. Each one has some problem, some reason why it won't make the perfect pet.The mouse is too small; the bird is too busy, etc. So Emma gets sad. Then she suddenly sees `the biggest, softest, cuddliest thing she had ever seen. (turn page) It was her father.' She then asks him if he will be her pet, and he asks if she will be his. `And she hugged her new big soft cuddly pet. And it hugged her right back.'5-0 out of 5 stars Will appeal to the young beginner who has some reading skill
Emma wants a pet, but is having a hard time finding the right one: the mouse is too small, the frog is too wet. Eventually she finds the perfect pet in a surprise place in a warm story which celebrates family relationships as much as it understands a young child's search for love. This board book will appeal to the young beginner who has some reading skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for early readers!
I got this book at our library for my 5 year old who was just beginning to read.I was looking for something that actually had a story that would compell hime to read.Anyway, I handed it to him in the car and he read it cover to cover on our way home. There were maybe two words that he had to have help with.He thought it was funny that the big pig did things the hard way and the little pig used his intellect to make things easier. It really gave him confidence. He has really enjoyed reading it to everybody he can! ...
