4-0 out of 5 stars The artifacts of the great civilizations of Mesoamerica and the Andes
My assumption is that a DK Eyewitness Book entitled "Aztec, Inca & Maya" would devote sections to each of the three great civilizations that Spanish explorers encountered and eradicated in the 16th century. The Aztec empire stretched between the Pacific and the Atlantic costs of Mesoamerica, the Maya kingdom was found in the eastern part of Mesoamerica, and the Inca Empire stretched 4,000 miles along the western coast of South America. But this book considers the people of these regions to be a mosaic of tribes and nations so that most of the chapters are topical, talking about food and drink, religious life, masks, and such in terms of all of the cultures that apply. There are a few specific chapters devoted to the Incas and their ancestors and Cities of the Andes, but most toss in everything together.
2-0 out of 5 stars One of the poorest Eyewitness Books
I'm a huge fan of the DK Eyewitness series, but even so, I could not like this book despite the usual gorgeous photographs.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Way to Spark A Child's Interest!
The Eyewitness series of books is primarily aimed at children ages 8-14. They are all full of many clear bright color photographs and illustrations that are each accompanied by a paragraph or so of factual information. The Eyewitness series is a great way to spark a youth's interest in a subject. They have books on just about every topic imaginable from Archaeology to Zoology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the illustrations
I'm an adult, but I found this book very helpful in the study about the Aztecs. The illustrations really help to bring the period to life.It covers some mature topics though, like human sacrifice that I hope won't disturb kids reading this book.A great overview about the conquest of Mexico.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empathy for the Aztecs
Tanaka attempts to portray Cortez's invasion of Mexico from the persective of the Aztecs.Illustrations are vivid and there is lots of information and food for discussion in these pages.Minor discrepancies exist, butoverall an excellent book to help balance the Western view of history. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars How Would You Survive As an Aztec
It wasnt the best in the series that I've read so far. As in all the books it has a lot of information. I would recomend you get it if you have a social studies or spanish project on the Aztec indians. It tells you about what you would eat, dress in, where you would be in sociaty according to your job, and much more. When you read it you almost feel like you're there. It was pretty good. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars La Noche Triste: The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs
The most striking aspect of "The Sad Night: The Story of an Aztec Victory and a Spanish Loss," is the artwork by Sally Schofer Mathews, which is based on the stylized codex art of the ancient Aztecs.I remember being fascinated by the ancient pictures of the Aztec rituals and Spanish soldiers who marched into Mexico in 1519.Mathews comes up with a book filled with colorful illustrations, dynamic ink and electric-hued watercolor art, that both reflect the ancient tradition and help to tell the story. However, besides enjoying the wonderful artwork, teachers and students alike will certainly learn more about this episode of history than they will find in their history textbook.5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the story of the Spanish invasion
I will say first of all that this is a bloody and somewhat gruesome story in parts. But war is bloody and gruesome. It was appropriate for my six year old boy. This was an interesting story (with fabulous pictures) that even teaches how the picture on the Mexican flag came about.I learned something by reading it and it fueled my son's interest in the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Truely Sad Story
This historically accurate story of the end of the Aztec Empire in Mexico is well written and engrossing. The history it contains is better suited for oder children, but the format is engaging for younger readers. It's the kind of book that made this adult reader want to learn more about theAztec and Hernan Cortes! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hey, kids! The Aztec empire needs warriors.Want to enlist?
The back of this National Geographic volume announces "Warriors Needed," and asks its young readers "How would you like to join the team that defends your people and your homeland?"It explains that your main duties as a Aztec warrior will be to defend your city against invaders, conquer new territory, control conquered peoples and collecting tribute from them, and taking captives to sacrifice to the gods.Just hurry to the main square of your city when you hear the beat of the big drum and you will be taking the first key step in learning "How to Be an Aztec Warrior."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Aztec News
Excellent bite sized tidbits of history presented in an interesting format. Inside you will find a map of the Aztec empire, articles detailing every day life of the Aztec from agriculture, the Spanish invasion, war, the ball game, a guide to the ancient city of Tenochtitlan, a girl talk section, food and classifieds that provide an insight to the culture. What a great series!I purchased a copy as a gift for my 9 year old niece and was so impressed that I am purchasing the whole series for her! What a find!A clever and delightful way to introduce history to youngsters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Letters of Love
I picked up "Dear Hope ... Love, Grandma" because it was so beautiful with a photo of Grandma as a child on the dust cover.I sat in the bookstore and read it cover to cover before buying it.The book is non-fiction.Grandma Hilda and Hope are real people. Each chapter is a story.I couldn't put it down. 5-0 out of 5 stars Connecting the Generations

3-0 out of 5 stars Now I understand the backlash
After reading I Rigoberta, Crossing Borders, and Stoll's account detailing the inconsistencies (lies??) of Rigoberta's life story, I wondered why it was so important to Stoll to undermine her credibility; after all, itseemed in doing so, he might hurt the Mayan people further...Even if sheHAD made her account a composite of all poor Mayan women, these things didreally happen. The Mayans needed her voice; they were most certainlyoppressed. What has opened my eyes to Stoll's motives for discreditingher, however,is the near sainthood conferred upon her by the Left......the ease with which the Left, even when they knew her account to befalse, continued to perpetuate the lie, even to our children.NO ONE hasthe right to rewrite history falsely. We DO need to be honest and not letthe ends justify the means. We need to admit the truth regardingRigoberta, get past it, and likewise admit the value of her existence inhelping to open the eyes of the world the the Mayan plight. The TRUTHabout Rigoberta, really about her PEOPLE, is compelling enough.Honestywill only accentuate it. ... I grew up reading Argentina Palacios' books and I can't believe I'm the first person to review this one, probably her masterpiece (although she is young still, and I wouldn't put it past her to write another good one).Palacios is the Panamanian-born New York based author of several children's books and she has always done a fine job re-telling the legends and folk tales of the indigenous people of Peru, Latin America, Central America, even the Spanish speaking people of the West Indies; and she has often provided for the children of those lands up todate and accurate translations of the beloved US children's writers (like Beverly Cleary).

5-0 out of 5 stars It Made Me Give Thanks
This is an outstanding book. There are several good books about the Alamo but this one by Jim Murphy is well written and has a true feel of endearment for those that sacrificed their lives and left loved ones behind. The cover is very striking and captivating and I immediately was drawn to the book. The layout of the book is exquisite. It really captures the historical meaning and importance of this event of heroism and bravery and enables you to imagine a feel for the time, place and people. This is a beautiful looking and splendidly written book. I flip through its pages often and just remember.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps American History Alive
This is a brilliantly conceived book. It is concise and illustrated beautifully to convey the historical perspective of 1836 Texas. The struggle was essentially best remembered for the gallantry of the combatants. This book is a tribute to their memory and keeps their sacrifice alive.
