This is a GREAT book!:)
I recently read this book at the local library, because my husband and I are adopting an infant from Guatemala.I wasn't disappointed by this book at all!!The author travels to Guatemala and it's different regions.He briefly talks about some of the different parts of the country and the people who live there.I really learned a lot, this being my first book I've read regarding Guatemala.The pictures are FANTASTIC!!!They are wonderful and truly show the realism of the people and their country.Although this is a children's book, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read more about this fascinating country.I plan to purchase (if I can ever find it) this book for my daughter!:)

I was disappointed in this one
My expectations were set by the price, and I expected more insights and/or a book I could enjoy reading and displaying, since we adopted our son fromGuatemala.The book is written extremely simplistically, to the point thatit can be painful to read for anyone with a reading level over fifth gradeor so.The photographs are okay, but there is nothing particularly unusualor enlightening about them, and one could find basically the same kind ofthing in travel brochures.Overall, it's just way too expensive for whatit is.

Guatemala's children are beautiful!
The world's children collection is great and my most favorite is The children of guatemala. This book made me feel much better when i first saw it.I was sick.The colorful texilites in the mayan village of Todos los Santos britten up the world.I think.I plan to visit Guatemala real soon,andsee the children for myself. ... Good intro for the layman
This readable book contains two tales - the story of the discovery and exploration of the Mayan Empire and the story of the Mayans themselves.The first detailed investigation of the vanished empire began in the early 19th century and has continued unabated. The same questions are still asked today - where did they come from, how and more important, why did they settle in such inhospitable land, Why did they abandon their cities? mayan history clearly and captivatingly written
to prepare our family (pre-teen and teenage children) for a trip to central america, we began to read aloud this book at dinner. it describes the adventures of early explorers and colonists and the mayan culture as astoryteller might. it's a wonderful resource "to set the stage",to spark the imagination and curiosity for knowing more about thiscivilization. it incorporates information from recent research andsuccessfully imparts this to young adult readers without a lot ofscientific googly-goo but sufficient scholarly material. this book is a gem- it never talks "down" to the reader; in fact, it's almost as ifyou are invited to share in the enthusiasm and appreciation felt by theseauthors for the maya. ... Good overview of the Aztecs
This is a great children's introduction to the Aztecs. The book describes basic history (where they were originally from, when they arrived in Mexico City, how they built their empire, and how they were defeated by the Spanish Conquistadors). Much emphasis is put on their religion (which involved lots of human sacrifice) and war culture, as well as the interaction between Aztecs and the Spanish Conquistadors.
