5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect gift for any child!
This is the one of the cutest children's books I have ever read......I'm a grandma who is always trying to get my grandchildren (Kelly and Mac) to say "Cheese" for my camera. They will be delighted with it.....if Idon't decide to keep it for myself, that is. The book is the shape of awedge of cheese. The pop-ups are clever and beautifully illustrated, and thetext is humorous. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher recomends the "Animal Ark" series
I am thrilled to finally find a book that both boys and girls enjoy equally well. The "Animal Ark" books have the "aaw" factor of cuddly animals that the girls love and the suspense factor to hold the fleeting attention of the boys. These books NEVER sit on the shelf! Although the target audience and reading level are younger students, the 12-14 set like them just as much. A lovely respite from Harry Potter, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice and relaxing book
I read this book in 2 days... just now finished. It was an excellent book that I don't regret reading. In fact, it was not boring at all and it provides some very good lessons for young readers in life. I'd recommend it to any parent to read to their child, or a child seeking a good small (not to many pages) book.

5-0 out of 5 stars mom of animal lover
My kindergartener loves this series.I agree that the idea of an animal being left in the park is a difficult one, but we discussed why we would never do this to our pet, and how dangerous it would be for him, and then moved on and enjoyed a wonderful story with great messages and wonderful opportunites to discuss the perspective of others. My professional expertise is in cognitive development, and this book provides valuable opportunities for children to think about others' perspectives and think about the larger world around them. It is a book that can be enjoyed by both parents and children.I'd highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable Book for Young Reader's
PeeWee, a small guinea pig, is born in Casey's Pet Shop, along with his four siblings, where his Mother takes care of them all. As they begin to grow, PeeWee becomes interested in the scraps of newspaper lining his cage, and soon his Mother is teaching him how to read, as she used to be the class pet in an elementary school, and learned alongside all of the children. Before long, PeeWee is adopted by a nice man, who brings him home as a birthday present for his nephew. Things are good for a while, until the boy goes away, and somehow PeeWee finds himself all alone in New York City's Central Park. Lucky for him, he meets up with Lexi, a very street-wise squirrel, who takes Pee-Wee under his tail, and begins showing him the ropes of living in the wild. Soon PeeWee is torn between searching for his owner, and his nice safe cage, or staying in the depths of Central Park, where he has to fend for his life. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical novel for the very young
Poppy Eyebright and Dusty Dogwood are mice that live near a stream. One hot summer they begin to date, and then they announce their engagement. They marry and have a very pleasant wedding ceremony with all of their mousy relatives. The book is quite interesting with its reminders of the customs of times gone by, like engagements and trousseaus.Kids can also learn from it how people use to survive hot weather without air conditioners. The book has about 800 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rube Goldberg for the furry animal set.
The Brambly Hedge books remain one of the sweetest picture book series ever to be concocted for the kiddie set.Of these, my favorite has always been "Summer Story".The plot is not particularly complex. In it, two little mice (Dusty Dogwood and Poppy Eyebright) have become engaged and they prepare for their summer wedding.Similar in many ways to Beatrix Potter's books, the Brambly Hedge series is published small, for small readers.Kids will enjoy the pleasant story while taking particular interest in some of Barklem's more impressive drawings. Her elaborate Rube Goldbergesque illustrations of the Dairy Stump and Mill are delightful. There is an attention to detail in these books that does not go unnoticed. For those kids who are, as of yet, too young to enjoy Brian Jacques "Redwall" books, the Brambly Hedge series may be right up their alley.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Sweet Story and Pictures
I really enjoy Jill Barklem's work, especially this book.Thesummer story is one of the Brambley Hedge season books, and tells thestory of the summer courtship and marriage of two of the mice of Brambley Hill. It's hot outside in Brambley Hedge and the mice want to do nothing but sit and dip their tails in the stream, until suddenly, the hedge is buzzing trying to prepare for the upcoming wedding. The pictures are lovely, as usual, andthe sory simple and sweet.A great book for children and adults. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars flawless illustrations and a loooong poem
Fabulous illustrations occupy most of the page in this 64-page poem of 101 six-lined stanzas with an AACBBC rhyming scheme. The story incorporates many of the series' favorite characters, including Matthias and Cornflower, and depicts not only the preparations of a wonderful Redwall feast by hares and mice and otters, but includes a riddle as well.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read-Aloud

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Autumn book
There really isn't a lot of quality books about the Fall, which is a shame since it is such a lovely season. Kill Barklem books about Brambley Hedge are wonderful little tales, filled with detailed drwaings about the little community of mice. Winter is just around the corner and the harvest is not complete. crops The mice rush to collect the rest of their crops before the rain begins. The wealthy Lord Woodmouse's daughter tries to help out in earnest but has wandered into the Woods. Now she is lost and scared, and it is after dark. Thrilling little tale that is worth it for the artwork alone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Will Primrose Woodmouse find her way out of Chestnut Wood?

As always, remarkable illustrationsof blackberry brambles and fauna seen only by tiny folk bring bothauthenticity and charm. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Maisy fans won't be disappointed.
My daughter, at 21 months, is on a real Maisy kick. She can't get enough, and particularly loves these Maisy lift-the-flap books. Not a lot in them for the parents, but also not a terrible chore to read over and over, since they are simple enough that she can pretty much read them to herself. She loves the silliness of this one, in particular (fish in the toilet, duck in the washing machine, etc.).I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a Maisy fan in mind.

2-0 out of 5 stars Look in all the dangerous places!
We love Maisy, but this book had to be put away. Frankly, I think the publisher should pull it. As my husband pointed out, it encourages children to explore all the "forbidden" zones -- inside the (front loading) washing machine, where there is a lovely duck and in the toilet, where there's a friendly fish. Under the sink, where there is a cute snail. In the laundry basket, where there's a nice chicken. We're trying to keep our child from dropping toys into the toilet, emptying freshly dried clothes from the laundry basket, crawling into the dryer, and especially from getting inside the under-sink cabinet, and this book seems to encourage the exact opposite!

3-0 out of 5 stars Panda is Missing! Can Maisy find him?
If you are the parent of a young child, you probably know who Maisy is. She's a mouse with a duck, a squirrel, an elephant, and a crocodile for friends. Why the crocodile isn't trying to eat the others is beyond me, but that's life in Maisy's world.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Charmed despite myself
My three year old brought this home from the library and while I first resisted this book, I eventually found myself mildly charmed by it. The story involves three mice, two boys and a girl, who are the best of friends until one day, the boys go off to join the local boys-only club and the girl reluctantly joins the girls-only club. This is where my objection to this book lies: the boys-only club looks like tons of fun, with boys playing pirate and such, while the girls' club shows the girls having tea parties and strategizing about how to "get a fella using mozzerella." Funny, I admit. But, why does the girls' club have to be so lame? The subtext seems to be: boys' games are fun for everyone but girls' games are just boring. But, the message in the end is that both boys and girls love adventure and want to play together. So, I will put aside my objections and continue to read this book, which has some great turns of phrase, to my daughter until it goes back to the library. But, I don't think I will be ordering it anytime soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Boys playing with girls
This is the story of three friends, 2 boys and 1 girl, who go on adventures together. The three are inseperable until they encounter a boys only club and they boys abandon Doloris. The illustrations tell us that in this club, the boys fence, play cops and robbers and the like. Doloris soon finds a girls only club that see joins. Pictures of the club tell us that the girls have tea parties, play with dolls, and do art projects. While the friends are engaging in gener appropriate actions, they are not happy and are sad when they part each morning. After a while, Doloris gets bored of these activities and asks if anyone wants to build a fort. When the girls respond negatively she decides to leave and one other girl comes with her to pick up Morris and Horace. The other boys respond negatively to playing with girls, except for one, who joins Horace, Morris, Doloris and her new friend. The five form their own club where everyone is allowed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Where this reviewer learns how many names rhyme with Dolores
It simply stands to reason that the man who brought us the wonders of Bunnicula would be a mighty fine picture book author as well.I mean, it's obvious when you consider it.James Howe's quite the talented man and "Horace and Morris but Mostly Dolores" is one of those picture books that stay with you long after an initial reading. After paging through the story I went on with my life.I went to work.I watched some television.I ate some Chinese food for lunch at a remarkably low price. And all the time that I was doing all this I'd find myself thinking back to "Horace and Morris but Mostly Dolores".I thought about some of the careful phrasings James Howe uses in the book.I thought about what he's saying about gender, and social constructions, and friendship.I thought about how well the story was paced and how you can write a really good picture book without its characters resorting to malice or nastiness. In the end, I just have to say that this is one of those stories that stays with you.You will not find yourself significantly changed by the book and your children may only find it mildly diverting rather than mind-blowing.But it's darn good.Darn tootin' good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why you should never live in a pumpkin
We just received this book last week , and we've already read it a few times. The story is reminiscent of the ant and the grasshopper. The story is about two mice ,first there's Mr. Murry who always worries and is busy preparing for the winter ahead, and than there's Thumbkin who makes his home in a pumpkin and never thinks about tomorrow. He lies around all day taking it easy, while Mr. Murry is always busy. When the two mice meet , Mr. Murry tries to warn Thumbkin about the foolishness of living in a pumpkin house , but of course Thumbkin doesn't listen. As time passes , the pumpkin rots away and the top collapses. Now Thumbkin's house has no roof .AT first Thumbkin says it doesn't matter he still has half a pumpkin, but he soon discovers that Mr. Murry was right , it's snowing, he's freezing, and he has no where else to go. He should have prepared for the winter. He should have listened to Mr. Murry and moved into a better house. Well , Mr. Murry of course comes to the rescue , he goes to Thumbkin and tells him that he can live with him in his teapot house. I feel that the story teaches some good lessons. It teaches not to just live for today, you do have to think about tomorrow. It teaches about compassion, and helping those less fortunate than yourself. Also, I love the illustrations, and the text flows smoothly, making it a very enjoyable story for both child and adult. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse at the World of Redwall
This short tale is illustrated by Christopher Denise, who also illustrated The Great Redwall Feast. Denise does a wonderful job of capturing the characters and mood of the Redwall world. In this tale, traveling players visit the abbey and perform at a feast marking the last day of autumn. The dibbuns hear a bedtime tale of the Snow Badger, the lord of winter. Later the Snow Badger visits the abbey grounds with his army of snow hares to bring the first winter's snow. This book should be enjoyable to fans of the series and the TV show. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading for all ages
This book is from an incredibly well written series starting with the original "Redwall" book. The "formula" is good against evil, loyalty and honor with only the glory of a job well done and the genuine gratitude that goes to those who stand up for what good and right no matter what the bad guys promise. Another tale in a not to be missed series of books for all-age readers

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Redwalls's best!
I loved this book from start to finish, it had a twist having a hero that didn't come from redwall,(Most of them do). It had me on the edge of my seat during the final battle between Tam and Gulo, the characters were great; as always, and it was just, in general a good book. My favorite creatures are squirrels so i loved it,i cant wait to read the next redwall book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Merely average for a Redwall book, but still an enjoyable read with great characters. Recommended.
One of the more recent books in the long Redwall series (book 17), Rakkety Tam is the story of a highland warrior squirrel from the North and a flesh-eating wolverine from the icy lands across the sea. Rakkety Tam McBurl is a fierce fighter, garbed in a kilt and carrying a claymore. He goes after Gulo the Savage when he and his army of 100 vermin attack and slaughter a group of squirrels. Along the way, Tam joins forces with the Long Patrol and is given the Sword of Martin. Battles are waged throughout Mossflower, culminating in a one on one battle between Rakkety Tam and Gulo outside the gates of Redwall. Rakkety Tam is merely average as far as the Redwall series goes, but still a good read: the characters are enjoyable, the storytelling fast-paced and gripping, but the plot largely unmemorable. I recommend it if you like and read the Redwall books, but if the series is new to you I suggest you pick up some of the classics (Redwall, Mossflower, Salamandastron) instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kids Asked that I reread this to them repeatedly
The book seemed so basic that I didn't think it would be important, but the message was sweet and our 3.5 and 5.5 year olds really connected with it.Definitely one of the better books that we have gotten them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher's Review
This is a review/evaluation of the book as part of an in depth study on children's picture books.I am a third grade teacher and I use this book in my classroom because no kid is ever too old to read a great story like this.I truly think it is a classic!
5-0 out of 5 stars A sweet and thoughtful story
"Owen" is a sweet and thoughtful story on par with all of Kevin Henkes other children's books. Whether you're a teacher looking for a story that students can relate to, a parent searching for a meaninful read for your child, or if you are just in the mood for a story filled with sentiment, you can't go wrong with "Owen." ...
