5-0 out of 5 stars Remembering this book as a little girl
I read a funny book called Sheila Rae, The brave. This book was written by Kevin Henkes. My favorite character is Sheila Rae because she is funny and because she has my name. This book is funny and exciting because Sheila tries to act brave in front of everyone. If I were the older sister I would do the same as what Sheila did, try to find a way out of the woods with her younger sister. They both made it home safe and sound. This is why this book is exciting and funny because you never know what Sheila will do next.

Editorial Review

Gaily tied up with two red ribbons, Lucy Cousins's unusual, delightful, virtually wordless "book" is in fact a triple pop-up. When you open the covers (vertically, like a door, rather than horizontally), you are introduced to this endearing rodent's kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, like three little dollhouses. In the boldly colorful kitchen is a pop-up table and chairs, and a pop-out-from-the-wall set of cabinets, complete with a range that opens to reveal a baking pie, and many other distractions. Turn the "page" and you come to a bathroom complete with a mirror on the wall, a liftable toilet seat, and a little figure of Maisy to stand in the shower stall. Each room comes with a sheet containing cut-out objects like clothing and small furnishings, to be arranged at will. In the bedroom, a tab turns a window scene from day to night and back again, and a clothes chest has real sliding drawers. Maisy is a character small children can fall in love with. Ingenious. 5-0 out of 5 stars Maisy's Big Flap Book
Allthe children I work with love this book(pre-school age). They are engaged for extended periods of time in pretend play. Also a wonderful educational tool in which to elicit important vocabulary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!
I bought this because my daughter LOVES Maisy.I thought she was too young for it (2 years old), but one rainy day I pulled it out because I was deperate for something to do.She loved it immediately and played with it for hours! My only suggestion is to laminate or tape up (with clear packing tape) the Maisy and Panda since they get worn out very easily.I know Maisy's arms don't move then, but my daughter didn't seem to mind.Otherwise, this will provide hours of fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I purchased this book and the Maisy Farm book to take on vacation with us. They traveled well and when we opened the book we loved the playhouse. My 3 year old laughed with joy when she say Maisy and all the wonderful things in her house. Best yet - when we left vacation we folded the book and packed it. This is one of her favorite toys now. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Maybe I'm missing something here!I can't help but compare this tale to another rodent tale, that of Despereaux, and find Walter rather pale.I find the vocabulary thrown in randomly and the referencesto classic literature forced.I will agree with the question..."who is the audience"?I don't necessarily find Walter or Miss Pomeroy's character very endearing (for adult or child) nor defined.I thought the best part of the story was the begining of their communication, but then it became uninteresting (at least in my opinion).Maybe it's not fair to compare these two furry tales, but I found it hard to overlook the similarities, and felt as if Walter was too much of a "wannabe" Despereaux, and alas reader, he is not.Ms. Diamond's illustrations are lovely and soft, she get's 2 of my 3 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for children but for any sensitive booklover
Although this near-perfect book has been marketed as a "children's" book, it would be loved and treasured by anyone who loves books and reading. I would compare it to "Charlotte's Web" and the Narnia books as a book that will appeal to children older than seven as a story, but it will mean something deep and touching to their parents. There's a slight hint of melancholy to the book -- a pleasant melancholy -- as there is in "Charlotte's Web." I will be giving it to everyone on my Christmas list this year. My copy is going on my shelf of very special books you read and re-read throughout your life, next to E.B. White, the Narnia books, and "The Little Book Room," by Eleanor Farjeon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walter, the Story of a Rat
I LOVED this story--it touched my heart and imagination beyond what I can express. It is a wonderful book--I hope there will be sequels--I would love to see these two friends have many adventures together, and I wish they lived next door. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true Redwaller

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
Great series for young and old looking for a mental shut-down for bed book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting look into Martin's past and a wonderful read that takes a look at big issues. Highly recommended
The sixth Redwall novel, Martin the Warrior is the story of young Martin's imprisonment by, escape from, and war against the Badrang the Tyrant, ruler of Marshank. Martin is a young mouse, the son of Luke the Warrior. He is captured and enslaved by Badrang, and one night, after violent insurrection, tied up to suffer through a raging storm. It is then he meets Rose, a maiden mouse from the peaceful sanctuary of Noonvale whose brother Brome has also been captured by Badrang. Martin, Rose, and Brome arrange from an escape from Marshank, promising the other slaves that they will one day come back to free them all and to destroy Badrang and his fortress forever. With the help of a roving band of circus performers and a mass of willful slaves, and across a journey through the coastal lands, Brome and Martin each struggle to stay alive, build an army, and return to destroy Badrang. This is a throughly enjoyable installment of the Redwall series, Martin the Warrior provides anxiously-awaited background to Martin's character as he discovers and refines his fighting spirit, experiences peace in Noonvale, and forms a deep friendship with Rose. The book is exciting, the characters (particularly those of Martin, the warrior Felldoh, and the peaceful Brome) are realistic and inspiring, and the book tackles some of the ethical and personal problems of war and the warrior's life that the other Redwall books overlook. It is a great read, a logical lead up to later Redwall books and to the building of Redwall itself, and one of the better books in this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seven Blind Mice
This is an excellent book especially for Kindergarten or lst graders. It is great to use for predicting and keep a young readers attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching tool for teachers.
The book I chose was Seven Blind Mice by Ed Young, which won a Caldecott award for its illustrations. This is a book that could really be used to teach many different things children. From the color wheel in art to working together as a team to get to your goal, it has it all. The story tells about seven blind mice that discover something different in their pond where they live. They decide to go out one at a time on different days to try to figure out what the something is. On each day the mice that went sees something different from the previous mice that went. They all seem to think it is something different. In the end they work together to figure out what the something is which turns out to be elephant. The moral of the story is if you work together as a team you can accomplish any task but alone you can not.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kids learn that wisdom comes from seeing the whole
The Indian story of the blind men and the elephant has to be one of the most popular and familiar tales from the sub-continent, and the well-known story receives some nice twists in this book written and illustrated by Ed Young. This time around it is "Seven Blind Mice" who are one day surprised to find a strange something by their pond. They all cry "What is it?" and then run home. Each day, one by one, they investigate the mystery and each returns to report something different to the others, insisting it is a pillar, a snake, a cliff, and so on.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars exciting
This book was good but not spectaculare. I think it would be better if they caught every bad animal in the castle and came up from Egbert's tunnels. This book is just not as good as the other books of the redwall series.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Redwall books
I recall this book from when I was younger, a lot younger, and I enjoyed it a lot back then. I recall reading it about six or seven times, and I just revisited it now almost nine years later.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Bellmaker, Another Great Redwall Book

This book is great for discussing problems that arise in your classroom and in students' home life. Every teacher has some of these characters in her/his class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Chapter Book for K-3
My Kindergarten boy LOVES this book!I read it to him every night, and he was very sad when we finished, because he wanted it to go on and on!!!! Humphrey is a delightful character. The teachers, school children and others in the book such as the pincipal, custodian and teacher's husband all are characters the young reader can appreciate and enjoy.Humphrey learns about each character's problem when he goes home with him or her over a weekeend or holiday, comes up with "a Plan" for each to help with the problem, and teaches each child valuable lessons. Nothing not to like here!!!!Great book to be read to Kindergarteners. Good read-it-yourself chapter book for good readers, 2nd grade probably.15 chapters. Not an early chapter book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our favorite hamster, by a mom
We read this aloud as a family, and read it in record time because no one ever wanted to stop."Can we have one more chapter PLEASE?!?!?!"My son (age 7 1/2) liked that Humphrey made lots of friends and we all liked how he took vocabulary tests. My daughter (age 10) liked how they use hamster language, like squeak instead of speak.

Who can resist a Henkes book? Move over Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and Julius the Baby of the World...another book by Henkes which is surely destined to be a children's classic has arrived!
5-0 out of 5 stars A board book with a story
Most board books are descriptive- 'Cow says moo...Sheep says baa..etc.'.But this one has a storyline, amusing and cleverly constructed characters, and very expressive illustrations. It is amazing that this kind of a story has been made to fit in a board book format.
5-0 out of 5 stars Grandma/teacher says Kevin Henkes and "Shela Rae" can't be beaten
If you haven't met Kevin Henkes or his little mice characters, you and your child (or your grandchild) are missing a great experience. In this book, Sheila Rae has a peppermint stick that she's having a hard time sharing. The illustrations are delightful, and the situations in all of Henkes' books are true to life, so any child can relate and learn something without a bit of sermonizing. If you like this story, try "Owen's Marshmallow Chick" and "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse". Don't miss the expression in his characters' eyes as you flip through the books. Your little ones will love reading and rereading them. The board books are just right for the tiniest hands. My one-year old grandson, three-year old granddaughter, and the students in my reading classes are all Kevin Henkes fans. If you have a chance to meet him, grab the opportunity. He's a shy, gifted author and illustrator. ... Read more

Children often hear "No peeking!"A clever book designer encourages them to peek in this story of two mice cousins who temporarily trade residences.5-0 out of 5 stars Classic tale with beautiful illustrations
This book tells the "grass-is-always-greener" story of the city mouse and the country mouse. One day, the city mouse wakes up and decide he is unhappy with his lot in life.He and his wife pack a picnic lunch and go off for a holiday in the country. There they meet the country mouse, who is enthralled by the smell of city cheese, and the mice decide to do a house swap. However, they each find that they don't have the skills and knowledge necessary for survival in the other's environment.Attacked by cats and besodden in a thunderstorm, they rethink the arrangement and return home.Very young children may find some of the predators a bit scary, but older children should be able to handle the tension and enjoy the humor as well. The book has about 1100 words.

4-0 out of 5 stars cute little Halloween book
Angelina's Halloween is a nice Halloween book for 3-, 4-, and 5-year olds, with just the right mix of scariness and other Halloween fun.4-0 out of 5 stars Very cute!
In this next book in the Angelina Ballerina series, Angelina and her friend Alice design beautiful Halloween costumes for themselves. However, Angelina begins to find her little sister's tagging along behind her, trying to copy her, quite tiring. But trouble arrives later in the evening, and Angelina learns another lesson.5-0 out of 5 stars Best Angelina Book Yet
I bought this book for my 2 1/2 year old daughter a week ago. She has requested it at nap time, and bed time, and in between, every day. She can now say most of the words along with me! At first I was worried that she would be scared, but she loves every bit of it. I love how Angelina handles her little sister in all the situations from being angry to being scared. It reminds me of my own older sister. I love the story and the illustrations and would recommend this book to anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Liked the Book
Scardey squirrel by Melanie Watt is funny and cheerful. This book teaches you not to stay home all the time.Scaredy squirrel is terrified of green martians and assorted other things. He never leaves his nut tree, like a tortoise never leaves its shell. On day he mistakenly launches out of his nut tree, playing dead for two hours on the thorn bush.Scardey squirrel, terrified, returns home and now is brave and strong.I would give it 5 stars for small children.By Tuck

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!!!
I laughed my head off when I read my 4 year old this book! She thought it was pretty funny too. I relate soooo much to Scaredy Squirrel as I worry about everything and try to be prepared for everything. The message in this story is fantastic. Because I'm over-the-top like Scaredy, I call the killer bees "Scarey Bees" and playing dead is "Playing Asleep" don't want to scare my 4 year old too much ;)This is a great book for children AND adults. That germaphobe, worrier, non-risk taker in your life can use this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very cute book
I first saw a review of this book on CNN.com, reviewed by an 8-year-old in fact.He really liked it and the theme hit home for me so I picked it up.The story is very cute and shows kids how taking risks can lead to finding out new and exciting things about themselves. The art is uncluttered and inviting. I think anyone age 5-8 could enjoy this book. ... Read more

My 21 month loves Maisy. She enjoys "looking" for Maisy and her friends in this lift the flap book. This book also introduces counting numbers, colors and shapes. A great book for toddlers. Another great Maisy book is Maisy's Playhouse.

5-0 out of 5 stars So sweet
My son's grandma recently brought this book home from the library and we fell in love with it. It is a sweet and magical story about friendship. It was written in 1969 so I am glad to hear they have reissued it. My son is 3 and just loves it.The illustrations and text are lovely and simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning self value through selflessness.
It is a timeless story of learning self value through selflessness and the joy that can be created from an act of selflessness. It is a sweet story that can teach children about these positive traits and remind adults not to forget about them in a very stress-driven world. My children love hearing this book read over and over again. And it is a delight to me to keep rereading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves all the praise it has gotten
This is a brilliant book, with a perfect heartwarming story surrounded by imaginative and beautiful illustrations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my favortie
OK for a very young child or baby. The pictures are not overly captivating and do not demonstrated the story clear enough to teach with out further explanation. I was a little dissapointed when we read it the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Parental Favorite
The collage art is charming. The text is simple and inexplicably seet. My husband and I both enjoy reading it to our son (now 19 months).

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT TIRED ENOUGH FOR BED?
