The book I read was of Osama bin Laden and his life. In the begininngs Osama was a3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
i though this book was good. it shows all the information about what osama has done. it was very evil what he has done. i recomend this book to people so they know about famous people even if they are evil. it shows u what is going on in the future. i was intrested and u should be to.4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Information.
Elaine Landau's Osama bin Laden: A War Against the West could have been written for adults who want information without a lot of academic language; she does not water down her subject or simplify the language. However, she misses the mark when she makes assertions such as describing the Twin Towers as "a towering landmark that reflected the United States as its best." If she were more exact, she might have said it reflected Western Capitalism at its best. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but too short
This book is a short (80 pages excluding the title page, notes and index) look at Islam. It looks at Islam's torturous relationship with the West, and then discusses the histories of Egypt, Iran, Algeria and Sudan, as it relates to Islam. At the end, there is a quick discussion of Islam and democracy, within the context of fundamentalism.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for students of Arab-American culture and history
Arab-Americans have made major contributions to U.S. society and yet many of their immigrant patterns and achievements receive relatively scant attention compared with some other ethnic groups. Kayyali, a Ph.D. candidate, opens with a political and social history of the Arab world and moves quickly to narrow the focus to Arab American history and culture, surveying assimilation and immigration experiences, adaptations, and Arab American communities across the country. Part of the 'New Americans' series, its focus is important.

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly recommended read
As a first time reader on Arab American issues I found this book to be an excellent and completely readable introduction to the subject. It presents a vast and complex subject matter in a compelling and well thought-out manner. A must-read for anyone wishing to gain a deeper insight into the background and issues surrounding Arab American society today.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Academically Sound, Objective Approach to a Timely Topic
Yet, another excellent installation from The New American series of Greenwood Press. In this book, Kayyali explains the unique migration patterns, nuances of culture, and lingering questions of identity and place for the Arab American community. Particularly helpful is the finesse and plain language in which she unravel the complexities of the "Who is an Arab American?" and "Who is a Muslim American?" debate, as the two communities are often incorrectly termed synonymous with one another. Equally important, is her discussion of Arab American feminism and other topics related to women in Arab American households. The book is solidly researched, yet written in concise, easy to understand "everyday" language, making it user-friendly for the first time reader on Arab American issues. In "The New American" tradition, it is written objectively and free of personal opinion or political leanings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Introduction
This book is a fine introduction for young people to the history of Israel and its relationship with the U.S. Unfortunately, much that has been written today consists of revistionist history that ignores the facts: In 1947, six months before the declaration of the Independence by the state of Israel, Arabs were already fighting against her, with help from the British. In the war that ensued, some 6,000 Israelis were killed, fully 1% of her population. That was roughly equal to the half the U.S. losses of the Civil War--still the most devastating both proportionately and absolutely--of all U.S. wars. It is only a third of the proportionate U.S. losses of World War II. Israel nearly lost--and won with no help whatsoever from the U.S.5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Introduction

The current low-level war, which makes six, was planned by Arafat during the Camp David talks, and started by Arabs on September 24 with bombs at Netzarim junction, and themurder of Israeli David Biri. 4-0 out of 5 stars The rise of the first cultures in Mesopotamia
The Mesopotamia volume of the Cultures of the Past series, unlike those devoted to the Ancient Egyptians or Spain in the Age of Exploration, looks at a series of ancient cultures that flourished in the Fertile Crescent at what is essentially the beginning of recorded history.Pamela F. Service has to touch on the kingdoms of Sumer, Babylon, and Assyria, all of which held sway over the rich land between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers ("Mesopomatmia" means "land between the rivers").In doing so, Service is also telling young readers the story of how the first civilization was created when human beings made the revolutionary change around 10,000 B.C.E. that they could plant seeds, grow their own crops, and manage herds of animals for eating.Agriculture required group effort and groups required organization under religious precepts and political guidelines. The next thing you know human beings are walking on the moon.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Perspective
As a teacher of adolescents, I often find myself unable to answer their "Why?" questions about the state of world affairs. This book gave me a deeper understanding of the history and issues underlying the events of September 11.Mr. Frank presents the information concisely and unsentimentally -- a difficult feat given the emotional import of the subject matter.I found it immensely informative and will undoubtedly refer to it during this school year as the first anniversary approaches and passes.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Israel and Palestine (The Middle East Series)
This book tries to give a balanced history of the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel. It outlines the history of the establishment of the State of Israel, tracing the settlement of the land back to the Zionist movement. The book mentions Israel's ancient ties to the land, but it does not make clear that there has been a Jewish presence in the area continuously since Biblical times. In trying to present a case for Palestinian frustration with the loss of a homeland, this book seeks to blame the British desire to leave an area that had become troublesome. It also cites the decision of the United Nations to partition the land as one that did not take into account Palestinian sensibilities. In trying to be "fair," the book gives some misleading information about Israel, and is therefore not recommended.Reviewed by Susan Dubin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History comes to life in an unusual manner
While Fiona MacDonald's Ancient Egyptians was originally designed to accompany a British TV series, it needn't only be considered for British viewers alone: kids around the world will appreciate this visual treat, packed with color illustrations throughout and providing a survey based on major themes in the history of Ancient Egypt. From temple murders to buried treasure and desert tombs, history comes to life in an unusual manner blending contemporary approaches and images with historical fact.
