Great book for pirate lovers - parents of easily frightened young ones should take caution
I bought this for my 4 year old son who LOVES pirates right now after viewing the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie and seeing the "Tall Ships" on the Great Lakes.I was afraid he would be scared by the pirates turning into skeletons, etc. but he was not - in fact he wanted to watch it again and again.So when I saw this book I knew he'd love it, and he does.Every night before bed he takes out all the separate letters and cards, has me read them, then puts them back in their envelopes.He also has me read all the different types of ships over and over again - he can now name some ship types by memory.This book is very well laid out - even I find the information very interesting and learned things I did not know.
Fantastic Fun
My young son and I were both thrilled with this interesting book.All the extras fascinated my son as I hoped they would.

A Useful Resource and Just Plain Fun
This is an attractively put together book on the history and details of pirate life. I have been searching for a resource on the subject that presents information on pirates in such a way as to not seem tedious and boring, but instead inspiring and fun (which, as we all know--pirates are fun!). With all the interest sparked on the pillaging bands of men, and sometimes women, with recent films this volume is a must have for anyone with an interest in pirates. Of course, it would obviously appeal to children and is definitely appropriate for that tender age group, but adults can also find much to appreciate.

A Must Read for American History!
I can't wait to see the movie. Somebody gave me this book as a gift. I read it with curiousity but I was not excited about it so much because it didn't interest me at first but once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. The author is the son of the one of the flag raisers at Iwo Jima. He was on today's Imus radio show talking about how many rejections that this book received before it got published. No interest in World War II, I doubt it. It became a best seller because it's one of the most fascinating books out there on our shelves. I gave my copy to my school for it's library. Now that it is being made into a movie by American icon Clint Eastwood, I think we can say that those publishers didn't know what they were doing in the first place when they rejected Bradley's heartbreaking and beautifully written book about his father's experience. He doesn't forget the many others who were involved in the flag-raising. He writes about each of them as if he was their son too.

"Flags of Our Fathers" - A Timely Look at a Bloody Battle in Our History
Quite a while ago, Nick Olmsted, a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, recommended that I read "Flags of Our Fathers." I am glad that I finally got around to taking his advice. This story struck me on many levels at once, and this seems to be an opportune time to share some of my thoughts about this remarkable book, written by James Bradley, the son of one of the six Marines whose iconic picture of the raising of the flag over Iwo Jima riveted a war-weary nation.
A hard book to read.
World War II seems such a long time ago for so many of us. Most Americans today weren't yet born when it took place. For this reason, I believe everyone old enough to comprehend its stories should read this book. James Bradley and Ron Powers have written a heart-pounding record of the thirty-five bloody days it took to wrest Iwo Jima (Sulfur Island) from the Japanese. The photograph of the raising of the American flag on Mt. Suribachi (1/400th of a second's space in time) is recognized around the world. The men who raised it: John "Doc" Bradley (the author's father);Harlon Block; Rene Gagnon; Ira Hayes; Franklin Sousley; and Mike Strank became instant heroes (though Block, Sousley and Strank died not long after). Bradley, Hayes and Gagnon lived to tell the tale, though both Hayes and Gagnon would die with the pain of their experiences on Iwo Jima seared into their psyches to the point they could not live with it successfully.

Amusing catapults, interesting history, but no metric units
This book contains easy-to-follow instructions on how to build different catapults. Unfortunately there is no data regarding approx. distance and height for the suggested projectiles, why you must try for yourself. All units are english/american, which means you must translate this to metric units if you are more used to that.
Good reference for siege weapon builders
This is a juvenile title that is well illustrated with step by step directions for building several working models of weapons (from a simple sling to a trebuchet). It even gives directions for making rope. In addition to showing how to make siege engines, it covers their history, the reasons they were developed, how they were used and what caused a decline in their popularity. I can see a student using this book to make a model for a history class, or an SCA group adapting the information for a full-sized weapon.
Excellent story book and manual.
This book is divided as chapters that begin with a narration of a battle or siege, and then and then presents the instructions on how to build several catapults. I learned my archetype of a catapult is an onagre, and that is one of the oldest kind, so I am severely obsolete. The instructions on how to build the models are very clear and easy to follow. The book is appropriate for young audiences, yet entertaining for adults too.

From start to finish I enjoyed much of this novel. THere were times when i didn't understand all of the fancy language of the navy and ships, but it was a great read.

So apropos for today
This is a story of war and how it affects the innocents who are caught in it.The story is sad, but not so sad children shouldn't be reading it.

Excellent introduction to mysteries of the CSS Hunley
I found this book to be very well written and researched on the subject of CSS Hunley and its recovery from the bottom of the sea. The book covers the development of this boat, history of its crew, mission and possible aftermath. Then the book goes on to the history of the search for the Hunley and its discovery and recovery from the ocean floor. Upon its recovery, the book uncovers what lies within the boat. (I used the word "boat" since that is what the submariners called their vessels.)

A quick, informative read
Secrets Of A Civil War Submarine, by Sally Walker, provides a nice, quick overview of the Hunley's history, recovery, excavation, and conservation.Targeting the late grade-school reader, the book is written in the style of and at a similar level to a National Geographic article.Any reader will enjoy it and come away with a good understanding of the Hunley project.There are a few detail mistakes, such as in an explanation of neutral buoyancy, but the main point is always delivered successfully by the text.I've been studying material on the Hunley since 2000, but I found several important bits of information I haven't seen elsewhere.The explanation of archaeological techniques as applied in the Hunley excavation is the best I've read.The book is nicely illustrated, although most of the photos have been previously published, and the interpretive drawings contain some fairly large inaccuracies.Overall, I'm happy to have this in my collection of books about the Hunley and I'm glad to recommend it. ... Great Tale By A Great American
Eric Haney I'm sure is proud of his excellent service to his country, but he also has a right to be proud of a spellbinding journal of the formation of the bravest unit this world has ever known. Suffering from political whims, Delta Force has risen above their greatest critics, the United States government, to become an extremely effective and powerful fighting unit. Haney's description of it's formation and his participation is nothing short of breathtaking. Written like a first person journal, it meets all the requirements of a fine read. I thank God for men like Haney who are willing to do the dirty work and rise above the politicians and their indecision. Thanks, Eric for your service and thanks CBS for bringing the unit's remarkable exploits to television.

Wait a minute
Be advised that this is a shortened version for "Young Readers" and not the original book written by Eric Haney. This version starts and ends with the Selection process and leaves out the balance of the various training and operations (about 2/3)ontained in the original book. It is a good read for what it is but the full version is much better. The product description does not make clear that this is a different version.

Excellent intro to anti-terrorist unit
This book is labeled as being suitable for younger (teenage?) readers, and it is; but it's also suitable for adults, as this 56-year-old military veteran can attest.Sergeant Major Haney was recruited for Delta as an Army staff sergeant, stayed with it until retiring at the highest enlisted rank, and knows much more than he tells in this book -- but what he does tell about the group's selection and training procedures is enough to give the reader a fairly good idea of just what Delta is capable of doing.Delta Force prefers to live in the shadows; this little glimpse, while both entertaining and informative, barely scratches the surface, but that's enough to show the sort of exceptional human beings who do nearly superhuman things for the cause of freedom.BTW, the CBS-TV series "The Unit" claims to be based on this book, and SGM Haney is listed as a technical advisor to the show.I highly recommend both the show and the book. ... GOOD, WELL RESEARCHED WORK FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
A person could well pontificate for several pages here over this particular work.I will spare you that. This is a well researched book and should be read by any young person in the study of WWII and that era.No, this work does not go into some of the agonizing details of this particular Nazi program, it was not meant to do so.This is an introduction for you young reader and is a wonderful tool to stimulate further reading and research on the readers part.If a young person is bright enough to read this work, the same young person is bright enough to ask all the right questions upon it's completion.The photographs in this work are quite good.Recommend this one highly.

Mesmerizing Account
This is a very gripping book. It is good to hear some stories from the other side. Objective in nature but walking on thin ice per its subject matter this book is still good reading.

Agree to disagree
I think this book will always divide its readership.I have worked in the past with a Lady from Iraq.A well educated, literate and articulate woman, who was educated in Iraq by Iraqi's so for those who think the Iraq was liberated rather than invaded and through the actions of George and Tony et al they will always believe that it was only those actions that allowed the people, women in particular a greater amount of freedom.That is not always the case... should we see ourselves as "saviours"?This will always be a matter for debate.As a Librarian myself I agree that given the right set of circumstances I would indeed take and look after the stock from my Library as I believe that information IS the key to power.So to this title's detractors yes, read in isolation it could be misleading, yes the "invasion/liberation" will have done some good and after many a long discussion with my former colleague, it has, HOWEVER for those who fall on the invasion side, I agree does any government have the right to do what ours (and I include the british here) have done?We are not Iraqi - we are not there, we will never PERSONALLY know.But read this book whichever camp you fall into, read it to your children, explain it to them in context.That is what you should do. Remember, BOOKS ARE POWERFUL I'm glad this book is generating so much discussion. This is what books do, the Librarian in the story understood this, that is what THIS book is about.

A rare portrayal of a strong Muslim woman
There are many wonderful things about this book which have already been mentioned by 27 of the other reviewers. However, what struck me the most was that Alia Muhammad Baker, the main character of The Librarian of Basra, is a strong Muslim woman who becomes a heroine in her struggle to preserve her faith and country's heritage at her cherished library.

WWII Japanese-American INTERNMENT through the eyes of a child.
2000+ American Sailors, Soldiers, and Marines (MILITARY PERSONNEL) died during the Japanese Air Attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, and as a direct result, President Roosevelt issued Presidential Executive Order 9066, forcing 110,000+ Japanese-Americans into 10 Military Internment Camps (Concentration Camps -- complete with Armed Soldiers, Machine Guns, Barbed Wire Fences, Spotlights, and Guard Towers).Each person subject to EO-9066 could only take what they could carry with their own two hands (and nothing more), leaving eveything else behind.Oh yes, the Federal Government also froze ALL BANK ACCOUNTS of Japanese-Americans through to the end of the war, so they could not get any cash out of the bank nor pay any bills.As a direct result, Japanese-Americans lost her homes due to nonpayment of Property Taxes.In Jeanne's Dad's case, someone stole their fishing boat while they were incarcerated.Her dad was a fisherman, and the boat had been the primary means of support for their family.

Jeanne's family leaves there home, goes to Manzanar, then kicked out of Manzanar, etc. It was just really boring and I was going to be put to sleep, this book couldn't keep my attention on it for long. ... Going Solo Review
Going Solo is the great story that Roald Dahl adventured throughout his young life. Roald Dahl accomplished many things once he was able to do things on his own. Mainly the book is about himself traveling all over Europe and Africa just trying to experience as much as he could. He travels all over the bottom of Europe and works way down and around Africa staying at many non civilized villages and getting to know many natives. At the time he is working for the Shell Oil Company until he finally quits. In East Africa he also is endangered with a near fatal death with a Green Mamba , one of the most deadly snakes. Roald also has a passion for the air force, and ends up joining the RAF. Going Solo is one of the most adventurous books that I have ever read, with the nonstop climax's and so many near death experiences. This is a very descriptive book with so many heroic twist that can keep anyone's attention. Roald Dahl is very famous for most of his work such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but this book is amazing because this all actually happened to writer in real life. The greatest part about the Roald Dahl in Going Solo is that he never gave up, even after a plane crash that he should not have been able to live after.He was told that he would be blind for the rest of his life, but about a month later he started to gain his sight back. I feel that this book is a miracle.

I read the fantastic book named Going Solo by Roald Dahl. This book was an autobiography of Roald Dahl's life prior to and during World War II. The book explained many of his encounters with the enemy as a pilot for the Royal Air Force in Roald Dahl's personal view. There are an uncountable number of fascinating events that occur when he is a pilot. Some of them include when he receives a life threatening injury, going into a hardcore battle with no experience at fighting enemies, and getting out of a long-lasting dogfight where he was outnumbered 200 to 12. The other half of the book explained his thrilling adventures prior to the war when he worked for the Shell Company. Some of his experiences while working for the Shell Company included chasing a lion, saving a man from a deadly Black Mamba, and sighting a deadly Green Mamba enter his friends house.Every page of the book was full of plot and adventure, and I could not put this book down.
