5-0 out of 5 stars Great series.
My 9 year old can't get enough of the Eyewitness books.Lots of info and pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arms & Armor is a great book!!!
I love this book so much that I decided to skip writing & English one day and do a report about it instead. There are so many different weapons.Don't look at that one star rating because he doesn't know what "arms" means. He thought it meant arms like a limb.
1-0 out of 5 stars This book was more about weapons than about arms and armor.
This book isn't really about arms and armor-- it's about weapons. If you are looking for a book that is compleatley about arms and armor, then find another book, but if you want a book that is about the history of weapons, then this is the book for you. I was looking for arms and armor, and this book didn't really have that much information on it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pearl Harbor
I found this book really interesting, its like little stories in the one book. It also puts u in perspectives of the people in the book, which was sorta cool, but all the same concept of course. I would recommend this book to 7th and 8th graders.

4-0 out of 5 stars my review
my favorit part is when the whole world found out that prarl harbor had been deyastated in a japanese air raid. they thought nothing could hurt this deck until japs. came along. Although the wuited states prossessed to advanced on technolgy such as rador and purple . a top scertecode braker, the informationgathered was often discered of misclassified. but once the raid was luanched , bravery abounded- on booth sides.

3-0 out of 5 stars my book
My book, Air raid Pearl Harbor, was a mixture of good and bad parts.First I found out that the war was unexpected to the Americans. On december 7th the japanese attacked our air base on Oahu.they sank many of our ships and airplanes.i felt that the begining ofthe book was not very exciting because the author madethe book toocomplicated and diffcult to understand. The action got a lot better and the got more exciting. The Americans entered the war and ships were sinking and planes were being blown up.Iwould recommend this book to somone who is interested in complicated books. ... "Shattered: Stories of Children and War," edited by Jennifer Armstrong, is an anthology of 12 stories that deal with a common theme. To give a sense of the book, here are some brief introductions to some of the stories."Shattered," by Marilyn Singer, shows how a brother and sister deal with the legacy of their father's Vietnam War service."Bad Day for Baseball," by Graham Salisbury, looks at the experiences of a Japanese-American boy on the day Pearl Harbor is attacked."I'll See You When This War is Over," by M.E. Kerr, is about a Quaker family during World War II."Faizabad Harvest, 1980," by Suzanne Fisher Staples, follows the experiences of an Afghan family during the conflict between the mujahideen and invading Soviet forces; this is a particularly horrific portrait of war's impact upon a family and a community.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Companion Book
If you like Adrian Goldsworthy you'll probably like this book as well, it has a similar focus on the small details instead of simply presenting biographies of the commanders. Readers not ready to dive into detailed technical assessments of the Roman military will appreciate the excellent visual presentation of the book and concise writing that will not have you hunting for a Latin dictionary. It covers a bit of everything: soldier names, location of Legion camps, economic life, diet, religion, training, etc. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
Yann Le Bohec's book is an excellent synthesis of many specialized studies of the Roman army in the period from the time of Augustus to the end of the third century. This text is actually a paperback reissue of the English translation of the 1989 French orginal. Nonetheless, Le Bohec's text updates and surpasses earlier treatments and is the most reliable overview of the subject at the present time. I found the chapter on the practical and symbolic value of "training" fascinating, and the chapter on the strategic deployment of the legions is valuable for an understanding of the attempts Rome made to deal with external threats. Less successful is the book's brief"history" of the army--essentially a chronological look at the emperors and how they rated as generals. The treatment is far too compressed. However, Le Bohec's final chapters on the socio-economic impact of the Roman army on Europe are first-rate. A fine treatment and one of interest to anyone who studies Roman history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Informative and Interesting to date
This book is the best written book for the Roman Army and History layreader, yet. I cannot express how, after reading it twice front to back, I pick it up to read various areas of the book, again! The attention to detail, the presentation of its sources, and the GREAT manner in which this book is written makes this an enjoyable, easily read, book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The story of the 7,5000 warriors who guard Qin, China's first emperor
While on vacation in China, Jane O'Connor visited the thousands of life-sized terracotta warrior statues discovered near the tomb on an emperor in northern China. She was inspired to find out more about both the army of ghostly gray warriors and the man who had ordered their creation. But as O'Connor read everything available about the first emperor and his buried army she discovered that a book on the subject had not yet been written for children."The Emperor's Silent Army: Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China" rectifies that mistake.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hidden arrows, Poisoned King, and Buried Treasure!
Rich with exciting historical details, The Emperor's Silent Army:Terracotta Warriors of Ancient China by Jane O'Connor offers a well-researched book that tantalizes the reader with tales of a poisoned King, a camouflaged dead body, and a booby-trapped tomb. The targeted audience of ages 9-12 will thrill with the adventure while simultaneously profiting from their newfound knowledge of China's first Emperor, Qin Shihuang, and his war and burial customs.Heavily strewn with color photographs, computer images, maps, drawings, and charts, the book easily captures interest and successfully holds attention with its succinct wording and short chapters that directly complement the images. 5-0 out of 5 stars The History of US series gets the story of the Civil War
"War, Terrible War: 1855-1865," the sixth volume in Joy Hakim's A History of US series, tells the story of the Civil War, although the author points out that there was nothing civil about it.Instead, Hakim favors Lincoln's notion that the purpose of the war was to give the nation a "new birth of freedom."Within these pages young readers will learn about the bloody conflict, beginning with Fort Sumter and the battle of Manassas to Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House and the assassination of President Lincoln.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a beautiful story about the triumph of a young girl's spirit and the collateral damage of war.
I realize a few people feel that this is a propaganda book. In this case I recommend telling your children about Pearl Harbor, the Rape of Nanjing, and Unit 731 and explain that in wars it's usually civilians, in some cases ones who weren't even born at the time, who end up suffering the most. What I hope people will remember about this book is a young girl's bravery and triumph over fear in facing a fatal illness, and the loving support of her classmates.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book to enhance a history lesson
Whether you are dealing with elementary children or even high school, this book sheds a new light on United States history. We are not usually taught about the destruction that our nation caused with the atomic bomb, but this book makes it very personal. However, it is a tear-jerker!That could be helpful to expose children to the feelings that come along with death of a family member or friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The tears flowed and knowledge is gained....
This is an excellent adaptation of the story of Sadoko. The bookhighlights the important parts, but keeps it on a level for children.Itcauses tears, hope, and courage in all that read it.It has a fasinatingplot for such a short book. The illustrations are breathtaking and reallyportray a sense of the lessons of the book. This book is well worthreading for every age level. My husband and I both cried, as well as mythirteen year old sister. There is a lesson and a tear for everybody inthis book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for your little patriots
Nicely written teachig our children about their heritage and how they can influence their country positively. After they read this book, they will be a proud American.

5-0 out of 5 stars History at its finest!
A contemporary retelling of one of the greatest military victories in our nation's history. My favorite part is when Washington tells his assembled troups, "Yea, verily, I wouldst not want thine smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud over Trenton," setting a precedent for military action that has rightly endured for centuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully illustrated and easy to understand book
I bought this book for my son's 5th birthday. He has asked me to read it nearly every night since. This exciting story is written in plain language yet the message is not watered down. The illustrations are so colorful and exciting for my son that he wants to look at the book by a small reading light before going to sleep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Abstracts
I thought this book of abstract arts are full of lines and shapes similar to the cover but I was wrong. I forgot that different artist has different views of their abstract art. There are some pieces of abstract inside that contains only very simple shapes like circles or triangles, but it's a masterpiece already! I wonder why? but it's great to have this book... :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Plethora Of Modern Art
This amazing book by Muncie Hendler is great in many ways. The primary use is obviously exposing children to some of the greatest abstract art in the history of the world in a fun and interactive way. It succeeds brilliantly in that goal, but it is actually a good way for adults (especially young adults or people new to modern art) to learn about and appreciate abstract art as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for adults, too
There are 30 different abstract art masterpieces represented here, so it is definitely worth the price. All pieces are shown in color on the front and back covers, and each individual page has the name of the artist (years of their birth-death), title of the work, date created and type of medium used. So, it's educational and fun.I recommend it for all ages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A timely book in light of today's political turmoil
Collaboratively compiled by Kimberly and Kaleigh Komatsu, In America's Shadow is a very personalized retelling of the injustice the United States of America perpetrated upon more than 120,000 members of the Japanese-American population during the World War II era, when they were compelled by the American government to live in relocation camps. Powerful black-and-white photographs and the wistful captions tell the story of a young girl and her family's experiences. A timely book in light of today's political turmoil, and very highly recommended for readers of all ages, In America's Shadow is vivid and unforgettable photography book highlighting one of the relatively lesser known aspects of World War II. ...
