5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wrote this review partially to counter that muddle-headed jerk who didn't like it. I read the book, and it is gripping and exiting. Osborn expertly entwines the true story of his childhood and training with the actual event. It is a must read!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but can get boring.
"Born to fly" is somewhat of a life-story of Shane Osborn and his journey to becoming a Navy Pilot. Now I usually enjoy biographies of peoples' lives but this one did not fascinate me nearly as much. Much of the book was Mr. Osborn describing how a plane works and how he was taught to fly a plane. For me, I usually read books for pleasure, not for a lesson on the controls in an airplane.
5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing must read!
When I get older I would like to be in the air force and become a comericial airline pilot. I think this book is great. It also showed me about the civil air patrol which i now joined and im going to learn to fly. This book is great! An inspiration! ... Read more

Editorial Review

When writer Sara Cameron went on assignment to Colombia to write aUNICEF report about the Children's Movement for Peace to submit to the NobelPeace Prize Committee, she was skeptical: "I didn't believe that children coulddo anything substantial to help peace." But she was soon convinced by thesincere teen leaders of the movement who had been through hell and lived to tellabout it. Colombia is a country that has been torn apart by guerilla warfare, illegal drug trade, and gang violence for more than 40 years. In the late 1990s,guided by civic and religious leaders, the children and teens of Colombiadecided to try and do what the adults of their country could not: make peace.Besides writing her report for UNICEF, Cameron collected these first-personaccounts of nine young leaders of the movement, all of whose lives have beentainted by violence. Heartbreaking examples include 18-year-old Juan Elias, whose father was murdered right in his own office, and 16-year-old Mayerly, whose best friend was stabbed to death in a gang war. Still, these youngleaders--despite threats by armed gangs and extreme poverty--organize peacerallies, speak publicly at schools, and lead workshops for other displaced orabused children. Sad, but ultimately triumphant, these stories will both inspireand shame the teens of First World nations who read them--shame them by showinghow much of their lives they take for granted, and inspire them to do more withthe resources and relationships they have been blessed with. The book includesan author's note and a list of resources to learn more about the Children'sMovement for Peace. (Ages 12 and older) Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Out of War
This nonfiction book is a collection of personal accounts of nine children who took one look at their beloved war-torn Columbia, saw how it was affecting the people around them and their families, and walked down the path to the right to live in a peaceful environment. 4-0 out of 5 stars Young adults drowning in rural and urban war
This book confirms Colombia's intimate relationship with war. However, "Out of War; True Stories From the Front Lines," offers a frightening new dimension of the conflict.Author Sara Cameron documents the tragic lifes of young poor Colombians who are disgusted with the violence and seek to reduce the warfare by fostering a better understanding of peace.5-0 out of 5 stars Child Heroes Reject the Horrors of War
Fortunately I did not experience the terror of mass murder, rape and callous torture as a child. For the children of Columbia such experiences are an every day occurrence. The courage of the young people whose stories Cameron relates is extraordinary. How does an ordinary fifteen year old girl rise to become a leader of children in a mass movement to bring peace to a country where war is the norm? How do children as young as eleven overcome their anger and personal pain to tell their fellow sufferers that anger and revenge will not work as well as forgiveness and conciliation?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Great Historical Book for Kids
I learned a lot from this book.I am sure my students will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A juvenile history of the Alama based on eyewitness accounts
I think that "A Day That Changed America: The Alamo" was published to be on bookshelves when the movie came out this winter, except that the movie did not come up.I heard it was delayed because there were those outraged that the film has Davy Crockett being captured and executed after the a battle; this goes against the idea that Crockett died heroically while defending the palisade, which is codified in the John Wayne version of the film.In this book author Shelley Tanaka allows that there are different stories told about Crockett's death in a section on the Legends of the Alamo, which talks about William Barrett Travis drawing a line in the sand.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good story
This is a good story that pinpoints the story of one little girl and her family in the confusion and devastation of August 6th, 1945.I wish I had been read this a long time ago (I am now at University). It is good for just the same reason that certain people have faulted it, that it talks about the event by itself. The droppings of the atomic bombs were not retaliation for any other atrocity of World War II, since there were plenty of atrocities for every side to lay claim. To criticize this childrens book for not discussing Japanese atrocities, in my mind, is as silly as faulting "The Diary of Anne Frank" for not discussing the firebombing of Hamburg or the continued lynchings of blacks in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dark, stark, and unforgettably impactful
"Hiroshima No Pika" is a beautiful book about an ugly topic. The delicate watercolors adorning the pages of this thin volume are heavy with horror, and they give a real, first-person, child's perspective on the unprecedented nightmare that was the bombing of Hiroshima.4-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Journey
This book shows what atrocities of war can do to people, how they can affect innocent lives. Hiroshima No Pika(Hiroshima's Flash) is mostly focused on a child, Mii, and, as we all know, the bombing of Hiroshima in WWII.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid intermediate biography of Robert E. Lee for younger readers
There are a couple of interesting things about the cover of this juvenile biography of Robert E. Lee.First, the complete title of the book is "Robert E. Lee: Virginian Solider, American Citizen," and the sub-title James I. Robertson, Jr. picked set up an ironic juxtaposition.Because Lee considered Virginia to be his country, rather than the United States of America, he turned down President Abraham Lincoln's offer to become the commander of the Union armies, choosing instead to side with Virginia and the Confederate cause.Consequently, Lee's fame as a solider was in part because he decided he was more of a Virginian than he was an American. There is the additional irony that at the end of his life, after the Civil War, when he was no longer a soldier, he was not exactly considered an "American citizen" by the North. The painting of Lee that appears on the cover shows him in the dress uniform of a lieutenant of the engineers in the U.S. Army, when he was in his mid-twenties, several decades before he made his fateful decision. So the cover does take a step or two back from the picture we have of Robert E. Lee as the commanding general of the Army of Northern Virginia.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Biography Written for Younger Readers (12 and up)
Part of the books for young readers put out by this publisher, this is a fairly short and not filled with complexity. Having said that, this is also a very well researched, very well written biography of General Lee. It is profusely illustrated, particularly the Civil War years which generated a lot of photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The pivotal battle in the end game of the War in the Pacific
No one will be surprised to see what photograph is on the cover of this Cornerstones of Freedom volume on "The Battle for Iwo Jima."However, the point here is to explain the epic battle for control of the island that is now symbolized by the most famous photograph of World War II.Tom McGowen provides a brief summary of the war in the Pacific and explains the strategic importance of Iwo Jima in the end game of the war.Young readers will learn how the Japanese turned the island into a giant fortress.Knowing they could not stop the American Marines from capturing the island, Japanese Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi asked his soldiers to vow to kill ten Americans each before they died. After three months of what proved to be ineffectual bombing, the Marine invaded Iwo Jima.McGowan tells the grim details of the invasion and the effort it took to gain total control of the island. The end of the book deals with the aftermath of the battle, both in terms of the famous flag raising on Mt. Suribachi and the end of the war against Japan. This book is illustrated with mostly black & white historic photographs."The Battle for Iwo Jima" is usually mentioned in history textbooks as the second-to-last battle of the war in the Pacific, but McGowen provides considerably more detail about the battle and its significance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to the genre
Although collections of Matthew Brady's work abound, most are targeted at adults or armchair war historians. The American War Between the States was the FIRST war that civilians could "follow from home" and the first to be photographed. This book brings the war out of dry history books and into harsh reality for young readers. Nice addition to a buff's library as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive chronology of the events leading up to the Iraq War
The first thing to understand is that we really do not have a historical perspective on the "Causes of the Iraq War" the way we do the American Revolution, Civil War, World War I and World War II, which are the other volumes in The Road to War: Causes of Conflict.George W. Bush is still in the White House and except for Colin Powell all of the members of the Bush administration listed among the Notable Figures at the start of Jim Gallagher's book still hold their positions. What these figures will say after they are out of office, when they start writing their memoirs, will provide information and insights that historians will find interesting. Then there is what might come out during the trial of Saddam Hussein, and while I think it is safe to say that few people expect any weapons of mass destruction to be found, you have to assume there are key things that are not known to the general public and the future historians of the Gulf War.

One on the one hand most people who read about history know that the cause of World War I was the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914.That "Incident in Sarajevo" is indeed where John Ziff begins "Causes of World War I," and the cover of this volume in The Road to War: Causes of Conflict series has a picture of the assassination on the top of its cover, with the Kaiser shown with a drawn sword below. But once setting the stage for the assassination, Ziff starts looking at the conspiracy that was involved and the political issues that generated it, as well as the specific circumstances by which Ferdinand and his wife were shot and killed. The assassination sent in motion a chain of events that led to World War I, which requires Ziff to go back and establish what was in place at that point.
