5-0 out of 5 stars Ancient Greece
This is another book from Jane Shuter's four-book series on ancient Greece. The focus of this book is how the mountainous geography and the surrounding seas effected the way the ancient Greeks lived and survived. The featured topics in this book are wars, battles, and fighting between the Greek city-states, helping the wounded after the fighting, Greek armor, farming, and different aspects of food. The colorful illustrations and clear photographs as well as the special quotes from famous Greek writers all complement the easy to read text. The same simple map and timeline from all the books in the series is included in the introduction. The table of contents is simple and easily directs readers to the various topics featured in the book.Boldfaced words from the text are included in the glossary at the end, as well as a topical index and a short list of more books to read that are related to the topics discussed in this book. This book is highly recommended as an elementary classroom resource on ancient Greece. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars boring, plotles, dull
I, Like many other unfortunate youth, had to read this book for school and do journal responses for each chapter. I did the assingnment with little difficulty without finishing the book. It was that predictable! I only read the first two chapters before I could do the responses with little trouble.
5-0 out of 5 stars My brother sam is dead
Over the summer I read My brother sa is dead by James luneden Collier and Christopher Coliier. As one of my favorite books, there was many things i liked about I found interesting. When reading this book, you forget about reality and you start to feel as if you were in the story yourself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Spark an Early Interest in History
James Lincoln and Christopher Collier's story "my brother Sam is dead" begins at the dawn of the Revolution, a time when Loyalists felt much the same as Mr. Beach's remark to Sam in Chapter 1: "I think men of common sense will prevail. Nobody wants a rebellion except fools and hotheads." Doubtful or unaware of just how focused and set on independence from the Crown of England the Rebel militia actually were, the loyalists or tories of Colonial America were caught off guard when they realized "Live Free or Die" was more than a motto is was a commitment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Perspective
As a teacher of adolescents, I often find myself unable to answer their "Why?" questions about the state of world affairs. This book gave me a deeper understanding of the history and issues underlying the events of September 11.Mr. Frank presents the information concisely and unsentimentally -- a difficult feat given the emotional import of the subject matter.I found it immensely informative and will undoubtedly refer to it during this school year as the first anniversary approaches and passes.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The pivotal reversal of America's fortunes from Lexington to Concord
The title of this book comes from the words spoken by Captain John Parker, leader of the Lexington militia, who told his men: "Stand your ground.Don't fire unless fired upon. But if they mean to have a war, let it begin here!"In "Let It Begin Here!: Lexington and Concord, First Battles of the American Revolution," Dennis Brindell Fradin tells the story of how a rebellious colony would be changed forever in less than 24 hours. The story begins at 9:30 on the night of April 18, 1775, when Paul Revere learned the British army was marching to Lexington and Concord to arrest rebel leaders and destroy American military supplies. At 11:00 that night Revere began his famous midnight ride to warn his fellow patriots that the British were coming.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read
I can't see how anyone could say that this book is boring because it takes you to another world and makes you seem like you are one of the characters in the book. There is never a dull moment and it let me see a side of the war that may have never been exposed to me if I had never read this book. This is a must read! I know you will like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eleanor's Story : An American Girl in Hilter's Germany
Eleanor's Story is a terrifying biography of the author Eleanor Ramarth Garner's life, growing up an American trapped in World War 2.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST- READ
Eleanor was a grade above me in the Gertraudenschule in Berlin-Dahlem/ Germany. Reading her book put me back in time. She writes it like it was. She writes about our hardships during World War II: living in fear, bomb attacks and malnutrition. Seen through a child's eye this autobiographical account is especially heart wrenching. The reader suffers with her. But this book is not just about the horrors of war and how they affect the civilian population, it is also a deeply inspiring and spiritual rendition of the events of those years. The invisibles, as Eleanor calls her guardian angels, are always hovering close-by, and when towards the end of the war amidst devastation and total destruction despair overcomes her, a single red-breasted robin, sent by the invisibles, I'm sure, brings new hope. It represents rebirth. Eleanor's story, in many aspects, is also my story. I couldn't put the book down. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Unstructured; Captioned Pictures Only
This little (but not very inexpensive) book consists of a four-page summary of the America's turn-of-the-century colonial wars and a considerable, though very hit-or-miss, collection of captioned illustrations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Interesting Study
The author has produced a slew of photo studies with incisive text on the life and times of the U.S. soldier, and his Spanish and Mexican californio predecessors also. His specialty is in gathering together contemporarysource material for the illustrations. This method has the great virtue ofshowing what was what and when. But if no photos are available, thensomething may be omitted. All of these books are vertical studies coveringa period of years. Though sometimes the illustrations serve to identifyindividual items of equipment, these works are not intended for thatpurpose. They are not catalogs intended for materiel collectors. They areof such a length and of such a level of detail that they will serve thepurposes of the general reader with a curiousity about what grandaddy didin WW II or great great great grandaddy in the Civil War and what he lookedlike and how he lived. This is not to say that the specialist such asmyself cannot find useful nuggets herein. I can. I use these for generalsurveys of periods I do not study in detail, such as the Civil War, and theWar With Mexico, etc. And to look up the odd facts. I have yet to bedisappointed with any of them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extending the Nija Lore
I bought this book for my grandson's sixth birthday. This lovely book is a step-up from "Night of the Ninjas" a Stepping Stone book.My grandson is taking beginning martial arts and is fasinated with the art/s of the Ninja.I bought this book along with the Stepping Stone book so that he could 'read the Night of the Ninjas' on his own, learning the art, and have this book read TO him as an enhancement of the truth about Nijas and the true spirituality that the lifestyle holds.Of the two books I bought him, this book: Ninjas: Masters of Stealth and Secrecy is his favorite. He was taken with the extended information and appreciated the depth of the subject in this 'older child's' version. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My Secret Camera By: Frank Dubba Smith
My Secret Camera By: Frank Dubba Smith gives the reader a great insight on how Jews were dehumanized by {...] army. The reader gets a true feel for how tragic it is when someone is treated with little or no respect at all by all of the graphic and detailed pictures in this book. One of these pictures is one that has two young boys hauling an enormous bowl packed full of filthy clothes worn for months or weeks with no wash.
3-0 out of 5 stars A grim visual reminder but very weak text...
Mendel Grossman did humanity a great service in risking his life to bring the world visual proof of the horrific tragedies within the Lodz ghetto during the holocaust. Unfortunately the text of this book is written in such an over-simplified style that the publisher's targeted age range; 3rd thorough 5th graders are easily bored by it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting and Important Document on the Holocaust
