5-0 out of 5 stars It Made Me Give Thanks
This is an outstanding book. There are several good books about the Alamo but this one by Jim Murphy is well written and has a true feel of endearment for those that sacrificed their lives and left loved ones behind. The cover is very striking and captivating and I immediately was drawn to the book. The layout of the book is exquisite. It really captures the historical meaning and importance of this event of heroism and bravery and enables you to imagine a feel for the time, place and people. This is a beautiful looking and splendidly written book. I flip through its pages often and just remember.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps American History Alive
This is a brilliantly conceived book. It is concise and illustrated beautifully to convey the historical perspective of 1836 Texas. The struggle was essentially best remembered for the gallantry of the combatants. This book is a tribute to their memory and keeps their sacrifice alive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise History of an overlooked Civil War Brigade
Never Were Men So Brave by Susan Provost Beller, 1998. This is a short book, (98 pages) intended for a younger audience, while providing a well-written and very complete history of this famous unit. Any person of Irish descent would be happy to own this book.Susan Beller records theglory garnered by the Irish Brigade in some of the most decisive andheaviest battles in the Civil War.Ms. Beller addresses the proven braverydisplayed by the actions of the Irish Brigade, (made up of the 69th NewYork, 63rd NY, 88th NY and the 29th Massachusetts) at decisive battles, andshe gives vivid descriptions of the actions of the Brigade through someimportant characters such as General Thomas Meagher (pronounced MAAAHer). For example, at the bloodiest single day in American history, September17th 1862, Susan Beller not only tells the story of the vital contributionof the Irish Brigade at the "Bloody Lane", but tells how, whenthey ran out of ammunition, the Irish Brigade "right-shoulderedarms" and marched away in good order from the enemy. She alsodescribes how shaken General Meagher was when his horse was shot andsubsequently fell on the General. In this brief book, Ms. Beller provides acomplete synopsis of the life of the Irish rebel, Meagher, fromhis earlydays in Ireland to his exile in Australia and finally his escape andsettlement in America. She also describes important historical events, such as the famous "general absolution" given by Chaplain WilliamCorby.Either one of these individuals would make a fine central characterin a movie about the "Irish Brigade"; .... The Irish Brigade, as Ms Beller relates, was involved in some of themost important Civil War battles, and were so effective that it causedConfederate General Robert E. Lee to state, "Never were men sobrave", from which the author draws her title.Perhaps Mel Gibsonmight consider such a movie

2-0 out of 5 stars Irish Suppression With A Little Civil War Mixed In
"Never Were Men So Brave" is a "nice" effort for thesixth or seventh grader looking for general information on Irish emigrationin the 1840's or about the American Civil War at the unit level. But ahigh school term paper it isn't.Ms. Beller's book in no way approachesthe detail satisfying those interested in reading regimental or brigadehistories(e.g., "The Iron Brigade" by Nolan; "The LastFull Measure" by Moe). The book begins with an elementary -- clearlypro-Irish -- summary of 800 years of Irish Catholic persecution at thehands of the English. This is a subject unto itself, and Beller's cursorytreatment is neither thorough or balanced.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The heroic story of the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II
I have long thought that when President Harry S Truman gave the order to desegregate the United States military during the Korean War, behind the innate justice of the decision there was the practical lesson of the Tuskegee airmen, the African-American pilots of World War II who provided yet another lesson of the absurdity of racial inferiority. In this volume for the Journey to Freedom series of the African American Library, Sarah E. De Capua tells the story of how the Civilian Pilot Training Act of 1939 trained 20,000 college students each year to provide a pool of civilian pilots who could serve as military pilots during a war.Eventually all-black colleges became part of the program, one of which was the Tuskegee Institute founded by Booker T. Washington. In early 1941, months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the War Department created the all-black 99th Fighter Squadron.During World War II they would defend American bombers and destroy enemy targets, thereby earning their place in military aviation history.Read more
