5-0 out of 5 stars Painfully True
Regine Millers journey in the second world war, is anything but unrealistic. Losing her brother, then her mother. Her hope for her father is something so powerful, that only people who really connect with this book, feel. Surviving a tragic time, Regine, or known as Augusta for her safety, is an inspirational character. For people of all ages, this book is painfully true and pulls on the heart strings of all types of people. Im 17, and i connected with this book, as if i was living her journey. Well deserved 5 star book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Gripping story from a Holocaust survivor
This book is interesting and well told.
5-0 out of 5 stars Tell No One Who you Are
This book is sad, but it is also educating. Regine Miller's family is attacked by the Natzis because they are Jewish and the Natzis don't like Jews so they procecute them. Regine has to go from house to house and pretend she is not Jewish. I would reccomend this book to mostly girls although boys might find it interesting. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique Shape is appealing
The shape caught my eye and was quite appealing. The text follows a young girl on a tour of the state in an interview style, so there are no chapters and the text flow is a bit awkward for an adult but kids should like it.Nice graphics with a unique question/fact on the bottom of each page. This book would also be good for younger children. I wish he had more states completed! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Social and military history of U.S. cira 1940s
This book is an excellent companion piece for use by middle and high schools teaching about social conditions and history of pre-post WWII. The introduction gives details about not only Af-Americans interested inflight, but also women, and is the first book I've seen that talks aboutthe sister of the Wright brothers. Good overall details about the firstBlack fighter pilots who rose above all criticism to become heroes duringthe war in Europe and were the forerunners of the Civil Rights Movement bycreating the first executive order to end racial segregation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars True stories of young children on Civil War battlefields
Lots of histories of the Civil War mention some of the stories about young drummer boys and other children who made their way onto the battlefield. For "When Johnny Went Marching: Young Americans Fight the Civil War," G. Clifton Wisler has collected forty-nine stories about boys and girls who were not only drummers and buglers, but also soldiers and spies.Certainly the most recognizable name in the group is William McKinley, who went on to become President, but anyone who has done a fair amount of reading about the Civil War will recognize the names of Jenny Wade, Richard Kirkland, and John Clem.I was also surprised to learn that six of these youngsters were awarded the Medal of Honor. For me one of the most memorable stories is that of Edwin Francis Jemison of Louisiana, whose photograph I first saw in one of my dad's books. He must have been the first young soldier whose photo I ever saw, but beyond the caption that caption that he died in battle at the age of fourteen, I never knew any more of his story. Now, thanks to Wisler, I do. Most of these stories are fairly brief, because there is relatively little to be known about many of these children.Amazingly enough, Wisler has unearthed photographs to accompany every one of these stories. This book begins with another haunting photograph of the young boys of Adams, Massachusetts, who formed their own company, the Plunkett Zouaves, at the start of the Civil War.The photograph shows a couple dozen boys, armed with wooden rifles and dressed as Zouaves, while the caption concludes: "How many of these boys joined the fighting during the four years that followed is not know."Nor, of course, is how many might have died on Civil War battlefields."When Johnny Went Marching" is an interesting and enjoyable look at this particular aspect of Civil War history for not only young readers but older ones as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Young Soldiers.....
Though both the North and South banned the enlistment of anyone under the age of 18, thousands of boys and some girls as young as ten fought during the Civil War.They came from all walks of life, immigrants, blacks, the poor, and rich, even future president William McKinley, and served as soldiers, drummers, buglers, hospital orderlies, and spies. Many were wounded, imprisoned, died in battle, or of disease, and six even received the Medal of Honor.G. Clifton Wisler has compiled the stories and experiences of 49 of these very young Americans into a riveting and vivid collection.History comes alive in short two or three page chapters, and each account is very personal and poignant, often using diary entries, letters, and postwar recollections if possible, and most include a haunting photograph of each young soldier at the time of his/her service. It is obvious that this book was a labor of love, and Mr Wisler's painstaking research and attention to detail brings these stories to life.A map, extensive chapter notes, glossary, index, and bibliography are included to augment lessons and discussions.Perfect for youngsters 10 and older,When Johnny Went Marching is a masterpiece, and children will be fascinated as they read about soldiers their own age who tried to make a difference. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Racism and highly dubious claims.
The author, a PhD from Columbia, states on page 62 that "Even though Native Americans were skilled fighters who knew how to move quickly and silently through the wilderness, they were not helpful allies. The warriors were hard to control once the fighting began, and would sometimes attack and kill not only armed soldiers, but also women and children."
4-0 out of 5 stars Fights for Personal Freedom.
Before the national issue in America in the middle 1800s concerning owning African slaves, a century earlier England had 15,000 of their own slaves from the West Indies. An application to Parliament in 1766 concerning their 'property' or 'commodity' was of great commercial conern to the slave owners who, no doubt, being British called them servants. On June 22, 1772, nearly a century before the slaves were freed in America, a British judge, with a single decision, brought about the conditions that would end slavery in England. His decision would have monumental consequences in the American colonies, leading up to the American Revolution, the Civil War, and beyond.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pride finally led to a fall
Follows Custer's military life from battle to battle from the Civil War to Indian fighter to his gloriously stupid death at Little Big Horn. An inspiring leader who always rode at the front of his troops, he finally ledthem into the greatest victory ever won by the Sioux. Much is made of hisdevotion to wife Libbie. Disobeying orders, he once abandoned his regimentto check on her well-being and was suspended without pay for almost a year.Drawings, photos, maps, glossary, bibliography, websites, index, chronologyall included ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Legacy of Enlightenment
As we approach the tenth anniversary of the author's entry into the Citadel, the book shows just how far we've come.In many respects, Nancy Mace is the Citadel's Jackie Robinson; the book provides a thorough exposé of how she needed to draw upon her own inner strength and integrity in the face of sustained abuse. Her story is an inspiring example of determination fueled by an unwavering focus upon the light at the end of the tunnel. And her achievement has, over time, both isolated and marginalized her detractors and their primitive belief in the superiority of men over women.By successfully venturing into one of the last refuges of institutionalized sexism, she has made both the Citadel and our society a better place to be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Golden Ticket to Ride
I graduated from this wonderful institution known to all as The Citadel, to some as Pure Hell, and to the Mace's as their fumbling fortress. It is a total sham, everything in that book except for the names and locations. Those are true, but unless you were there at that time, or there at all, you will never get the truth.Conroy's Lord's of Discipline held more legitimacy than this book. And we all know when a book is written by 2 people, the first person spoke and the second person actually wrote.
3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly accurate -- A story that needed to be told, though
To prove that much of what Ms. Mace states in her book is true, I, as a male cadet, waited until I was on a break at home to read her book.Being the son of a mother who graduated from a military academy, I entered this institution with a much different perspective than most incoming cadets. What I have seen and experienced over the years has blown my mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who won the War of 1812?You decide...
Historians like to argue about whether or not the United States won the War of 1812, and when young readers finish this Cornerstones of Freedom volume by Andrew Santella they will have an idea why an argument can be made the U.S. lost. After all, the war "ended" with the Battle of New Orleans, which actually took place after the Treaty of Ghent had been signed. You might have heard of that, but Santella also tells how the U.S. declared war on Britain after Lord Castlereagh had finally removed restrictions on American trade.Ah, the joys of getting important news back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean early in the 19th-century.Santella does a nice job of explaining how the two countries ended up fighting a war that probably should not have been fought and then provides enough details about the actual battles to pretty much convince you that neither side won.Young students will also understand why the Americans considered it a "Second American Revolution," which indicated that win, lose or draw American independence was confirmed.Santella also talks about writing of "The Star Spangled Banner," which is the focus on another volume in this excellent series.Read more
