Spectacular book!
We were the first to check this book out at our library, the day after Rosa Parks died.What a lucky find!We homeschool, and this has been the PERFECT book to fully educate our 8 and 11 year old daughters about the Civil Rights Movement.The chapters are short enough for a kid to digest, and yet manage to completely cover the subject at hand, and the language keeps them interested.You won't find a better book on this subject material for juveniles.

Another exceptional book from Diane McWhorter
In A Dream Of Freedom, Diane McWhorter gives the 9-12 year old reader a concise history of the American civil rights movement between the years1954-1968. McWhorter covered some of this material in her earlier civil rights chronicle, Carry Me Home which won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction. A Dream of Freedom opens with a rousing foreward by the legendary Rev Fred Shuttlesworth who is one of the central figures in the story that follows. The book focuses on the turbulent period between 1954-1968 when the growing civil rights movement battled institutional segregation, violence and bloodshed. McWhorter's account is both disturbing and inspirational. She is an excellent storyteller with a straightforward and unflinching delivery. She closes with a poignant epilogue and bibliography that encourages further research. This book is well organized and illustrated with over 120 photographs and collages. I think this book is a great book for kids who really would like to learn about Americas past time. It gives you detailed information about are Nation times and the up's and downs. I learned lot from this book and it has a good twist from most books.

Best 20th Century Book for young people I've Seen.

Caveat Emptor
Living part-time in Ha Noi, Sydney, Seoul, and getting mail in Denver, I have taught about the American-Viet Nam War in all four countries from a multi-cultural perspective.Having read and reread the paperback version, the book unfortunately shows a limited view with significant design problems. a reviewer should read the book
As one of the authors of the book, The Vietnam War: A History in Documents, I take exception to the review from the reader in Colorado. I have seen his actual comments and he must know that we have shown them to be incorrect. He claims that we are incorrect on certain pages but in fact we had the facts correct. He is entitled to his own opinion but he is not entitled to his own set of facts. He seems to think that we should have written another kind of book. That is his privilege. It would be decent for any reviewer to comment directly on the book being reviewed rather than a book that he thinks we should have written. His comments are very close to being dishonest and seem primarily interested in disparaging the book. The controversy over the Vietnam War has not yet ended.Yours truly, John J. Fitzgerald
