4-0 out of 5 stars A Chilling story
How to Kill a Monster is a fabulous book.It is a spine tingling, heart breathing, and breathe taking scary book.It is about two is my favorite o kids, Gretchen who is 12 and Clark who is 12 went to visit their grand parents. The grandpa is my favorite character because he is nearly deaf and the grandma just likes to cook. The two kids had some trouble getting there thought. At the house, they found a locked door and wanted to check it out. However, their grandparents tell them to stay away. Can you guess what happened?Yah they open the door and something comes out. When Gretchen and Clark go downstairs, they are locked in.Do they get out?You will have to read the book to find out.In my opinion people 9 and up should read this book.I just thought it was a wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Son is crazy for this book a year later!
Last year, I bought this reluctantly thinking my son would tear the flaps off. But I needed a little trick or treat gift for an 18 mo that couldn't have candy. A year later and thousands(yes literally)of readings later it is still intact. My son still cracks up at this book and its a must have for any road trips.

My 10 month old daughter and I were going on our first airplane trip and I wanted to keep her occupied on the flight.I bought a whole bunch of new toys and a few books, this being one of them. The entire time, she wanted me to read this book to her over and over.Whenever I was finished reading it and would close the book, she would cry.i must of read it to her 20 times. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Yuck
This is one of the only books I'm willing to pay my own shipping to return it.I bought this because I liked 'Twas the Fright Before Christmas, and I liked the unique yet cute artwork of all the monsters in it and the details in the background. But this book, The House that Drac Built-- it's hard to believe it's the same artist!I have tons of picture books, and this has the ugliest artwork of them all.The manicore is gross-- a weird face and sausage-link tail.I didn't find the artwork creepy or scary in the way I'd love to see in a Halloween book for a change, but this art was just completely unappealing.I love Halloween picture books, but I highly recommend In the Haunted House and The Bones of Fred McFee, both by Eve Bunting, Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson, The Old Lady who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams, or for an edgier book, Cinderella Skeleton Robert D. San Souci all over this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read
My 3 year old nephew adores this book. He is really into monsters and vampires and the like.Within just a few times of reading it, he now has memorized it and has a wonderful time with the words and expressions. I think he even loves to watch us adults have fun with him while we are going through the book. I adore watching him read it. It is a book I myself want to keep around for other kids as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here is a great house for kids to check out on Halloween
As you can easily guess from the title, "The House That Drac Built" takes the basic structure of "The House That Jack Built" and throws in everything from a bat and a cat to a manticore and the fiend of Bloodygore.Everything chains out, albeit rattling chains covered with dust from a dungeon, and young children will love the way new monsters keep getting added into the mix. Then, just to make things really fun, some children show up trick or treating and pretty much scare the monsters.Author Judy Sierra keeps this relatively simply despite offering up such things as a fearsome manticore (apparently she and her husband like to convince trick-or-treaters that they have come to the house that Drac built, which apparently is located in Eugene, Oregon). Will Hillenbrand's illustrations are atmospheric without being overly spooky (e.g., the mummy from days of yore), thereby catching the whimsy of this particular tale.Be sure to have your kids check out the cover where all of the characters from inside the book can be found lurking around somewhere. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dissenting opinion
I found the story line thin and the illustrations lacking. It's a great idea, but it just didn't quite work. In particular, the illustrations don't enhance the story. Again, I liked the idea of "primitive" style, child-like illustrations (I love Mo Willems' books), but the execution didn't quite work. Fell flat with my 4 year old.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BOY UNDER A MONSTER'S BED! CLEVER IDEA, WONDERFUL STORY
Wow! If there were ten stars, I would give this book that many, if only for the fantastic idea of reversing a familiar situation that most children fear (a monster under the bed) and making it a BOY under a little monster's bed.Clever, Mr. McClear. And this fab author didn't stop at the idea, he wove it into an awesome story that held me spell-bound, as I'm sure it did his many fans of all ages. I grabbed this book right out of my granddaughter's hands because the idea intrigued me so much, and the storyline grabbed me and wouldn't let go until the last word.I highly recommend this book
4-0 out of 5 stars 4 ½ *The Monster Who Was Afraid of Boys!
A colorful book that doesn't quite reach its potential,"The Boy Under the Bed" is about a young monster, Giles, with nighttime fears that a BOY may be hiding under his bed! When he calls his big-headed (literally), tusked parents into his room, the boy disappears.(The parents later comfort/admonish their son by saying "...THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS BOYS.") But Giles knows better:Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Conclusion
Jared, Mallory, and Simon Grace are back in the final installment of the Spiderwick Chronicles. It picks up right where the last one left off with the children walking home afraid of how angry their mother will be when she finds out that they were out all night battling Goblins. But when they get home they find the house has been ransacked and their mother kidnapped by the evil Mulgarath himself. They must now figure out how to get into his evil palace and rescue their mother without becoming victims themselves. But they are not sure how to battle the evil monster and the goblins and dragons he has surrounded himself with because Mulgarath has also stolen their great great uncle Arthur's field guide that contains all of the secrets to dealing with creatures from the fairie world. They must rely on their contacts with good creatures including the Elves and their smarts to try to save the day.
4-0 out of 5 stars Easily The Best of The Spiderwick Chronicles

4-0 out of 5 stars The exciting finish
I liked this book alot,in one hand i think the Author could have made it a bit more interesting. And in the other hand i think it was okay.I think they could have put in a bit more dangerous characters.I really liked the bit where they think the man is there dad and then he changes into a gastly beast with sharp claws and a wrinkly face. The house was very good because of they put the house in a setting of a junkyard.I think the stairs were really awesome.I also think Byron was very imaginitive. The ending could have been a little bit better. I wish there would be another seires like the Spiderwick seiries ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Engaging, and Enlightening
These stories are wonderful.Full of imagintion, it's been able to draw my very active [...] into the stories.Every story has a moral and it's great for the children to learn them and is a great reminder for adults too (especially when you get caught up in the everyday grind and forget the simple things in life)!!!The moral of each story is stated in the beginning of the tale and reiterated at the end of the story.Great stories, great illustrations, and just TERRIFIC!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not really classics, but a good collection all the same.
'The Serendipity Collection' includes Zippity Zoom, Ming Ling, Butterwing, Serendipity, Sassafras, Rhubarb and Memily.
5-0 out of 5 stars love serendipity collection
I have read the Serendipity books to my daughter when she was young, she had almost the entire collection, but being in the military and moving from place to place, we lost a lot of the collection.I found the Serendipity Collection, in hard bound, with 7 wonderful stories in it, purchased it, and now I read it to my grandchildren.Once again Serendipity is being read in my house again. My grandchildren, which are 6 and 5 yrs. old, love the stories. They turn the tv OFF when it is bedtime and grab the book and wait for me to come to read the stories to them. When a child will turn the Disney Channel off, for a story book reading, that alone says a lot about the book.My grandchildren love this book, and yes, I will be buying more and more of this series. The pictures in the book are so fantastic and life like, I really am glad to find this book, and the morals in the book are just what we try to teach our children and grandchildren. This book will be a joy to anyone that loves to read to children and watch their faces as they see the darling pictures. ... I just re-read the book for the first time in 7 years, and it was just as good as it was when I was 5. Then, I looked to see who the author was. 5-0 out of 5 stars All About A Good Book
This is all about the book Deep Trouble. It is about these peoplethinking that they caught a mermaid and then these zoopeople came and said that they would give the other people one million dollars, but the oter people did not give them the mermaid, and thats how the book went, this was one of the best books I have ever read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading, but Good
I'm a very tuff critic, and as much as I like R.L. Stine, this isn't his best. The story, in my opinion, is misleading. It's supposed to be the "Don't Go In The Water" scenario, but it's mainly about mermaids, something that isn't very scary. Early in the book is the best scene. A hammerhead circles the main character. If only the whole book would have dealt on this topic. But, I do believe that it is worth buying and reading. Hope you enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite!
A great theme that has recently been reinforced with "Monsters, Inc". Accessible, non-scary illustrations that, like most of Mayer's stuff, are very much through a kids'-eye view. Also gives kids the idea of power over something scary, that they can have control over their interactions with imaginary beasties.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Halloween
I didn't think my (young) 3-year-old would sit through this book. The text looked long, the art very detailed. But I was WRONG! This has been our nightly story for weeks and I confess: I'm not bored. It's the perfect touch--not very frightening and a reassuring story of self-confidence. Even my 2-year-old pops in for the occasional ghost or pig (no, he's not quite ready for the whole story although Curious George has kept him seated).
5-0 out of 5 stars A really wonderful book!
I bought this book for my daughter to celebrate Halloween. It is her favorite holiday so we read this book year round. The story is about a pig named John who is too scared to go trick or treating on Halloween with his friends.John stays back at the house as his friends go on without him. After they leave a real witch comes calling for some treats. When she sees that John only has candy to hand out she decides to teach hime how to make some real Halloween treats. They whip up such heavenly connoctions as pies, tarts, mousse, sundaes, and cookies. All of the witch's monster friends show up for a real Halloween party. Finally the witch tells John that they have to leave while it is still night out. When John's pig friends come back cold and tired they are amazed to find all of the treats that John has prepared. When John goes to bed he realizes he is no longer afraid of Halloween and he dreams of all of the new friends he has made. The illustrations in this book are great and the story is really sweet. My daughter loves this book and I really enjoy reading it to her. This book will really put you into a Halloween mood.

5-0 out of 5 stars My child loves this book
My infant (almost 10 months) loves this book. The use of great adjectives like "blobby" make this a nice book to read. The touch-and-feel patches are unique and well designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for babies
My 8 month old son loves this book. It's his favorite right now, he loves the different textures on each page, the bright colors, and he smiles at every page. It is short and sweet and keeps a baby's attention. It was the first book he really seemed to enjoy. The pages are well made and durable and good for biting on too! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Charming, funny, a little bit "witchy."
I like that Shrek likes himself for who he is.I like the theme, that there's someone for everybody.I don't especially care for the "evil magic" in it, but it is a very small part of the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shrek, the ugliest guy around
When they came along, the moviemakers took a great deal of artistic license. Little of the book remains intact in the movie. The book starts with Shrek's parents hissing things over, and they decide to send Shrek "out in the world [to do] his share of damage". Shortly after he leaves home, Shrek meets with a witch who tells him his fortune in exchange for a few of Shrek's lice. Shrek is told that he will wed a princess who is even uglier than he, and is overjoyed at the news. On his way to the princess, Shrek meets a peasant, confronts thunder and lightning, defeats a dragon, has a nightmare of being loved by children, and meets a donkey who takes him to the castle. After defeating a knight he goes and meets his princess. The two get married and live horribly ever after.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shareing with my grand children
My two twin grandchildren age 6 a boy and girl, I talked into letting me read book.
2-0 out of 5 stars A Confused and Messy Story
My son is a lover of all things monster-related, so I figured we would both enjoy reading this book.Wrong.This book can't decide what it wants to be.The storyline appeals to the seven-year-old boy set, but the prose is often overblown and flowery, a hallmark of an adult writer who just doesn't want to admit that he is writing kid's fiction. The gross-out passages are totally over-the-top; in particular, the scene with the kids' father weeping and having his brains sucked by a monster is graphic and disturbing. The story meanders aimlessly and the ending falls with a confused thud.Upon finishing the book, my son and I looked at eachother and both said "huh?"Don't bother.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, though not for everyone
I will admit this book can be a bit advanced for some. I can see dyslexics becoming confused and I can see a child may not understand all of the vocabulary (more geared towards 10-11, not 8), but this was a VERY entertaining book.

5-0 out of 5 stars spooky and charming
The wit of Crimi and the excellent artwork of Grimly combine to create a really spectacular, and twisted, love story, of Boris Kleenitoff and Bella Legrossi, two singular inhabitants of booville who realize how perfect Halloween, and life can be, when you compromise for love.Perfect for the child in all of us, as well as lovers of darker humor, such as Edward Gorey and Tim Burton.

5-0 out of 5 stars not just for halloween
my son loved this book! we have read and re read it dzns of time so far. it is great in the summer in the winter.. it is a great story of two differant people coming together and of toleration... are you a bit of legorossi? or a neatnick like kleanitoff? the illustrations are just.... well you'll see. take my word for it..

5-0 out of 5 stars An Odd Couple to Love
I love this book! Kids will enjoy the antics of this mismatched couple. The humor works on so many levels. This is a great book to give as a gift to kids as well as adults. I read it whenever I need a laugh. The illustrations are "to die" for and add to the story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Scary Change
When you are alone do you ever think about monsters? Well if not then after you read this book you will. You will because of the monsters ring. The ring works like this: Step 1: You twist it once around and you get fangs as teeth in your mouth. When you twist it twice, which is step 2, you get horned and hairy. Then step 3: You twist the ring three times, but no person has dared.
