5-0 out of 5 stars Clever and funny
My 6-year old son loves the franny stories. I thought he might have trouble relating to the girl, but he is very much into science and so he had no problems being pulled in to Franny's adventures. She dabbles in science, while still learning what it means to be a kid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Franny K. Stein's Crate of Danger
My 9 year old son LOVES these books. He is a struggling reader, and would rather learn science than language arts.Because these books have to do with science experiments, he eats them up.He's on the 4th book now and I did not tell him to read last night, and caught him reading it on his own and almost done with it.It's exciting for me as a parent and reader to see him find a series that can hold his interest while he becomes a better reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Armani, 7 years-old: I can't stop reading these Franny K. Stein books
I love these books because they are great chapter books. They are funny because Franny is the coolest mad scientist, to be a girl.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but not for young children
My six year old son is very into Halloween and anything spooky. So when we saw this book at the library we just had to check it out!The very first monster in the book is one that lives behind mirrors and grabs people. This freaked my son out and now he will not go into the bathroom by himself. After that, we had to pick and choose which monsters to read to him about and even then we had to leave a few words out.It says on the back of the book that this book is for age 6 and up.That surprises me and I would not recommend this book for a 6 year old. But, I still give it a three star rating because, as an adult, I find it very interesting reading about these monsters that live in folklore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Gruesome Guide!!!!!
This book is extremely interesting to me because it talks about the locations of each monster and what each monster does to unsuspecting travelers. Also, this book talks about how to survive each encounter with each monster in great detail. The monsters are rated as (1) Frightening, (2) Dangerous, (3) Very Dangerous, (4) Usually Fatal, and (5) Fatal, with the fatal monsters usually having no survival tips for the travelers.
5-0 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to dozens of monsters from around the world
"The Gruesome Guide to World Monsters" is presented as a travel guide that will help you plan how to meet (and how to flee) the various monsters of the world. But you have to understand going in that the advice given here are only proven methods for escaping or overcoming SOME of these monsters, SOME of the time.So forget about a money back guarantee that you will come back from your vacation alive, because with some of these survival tips I am pretty sure they are just making things up to give young readers a false sense of hope. All of the monsters that Judy Sierra writes about and which are illustrated by Henrik Drescher are "real" in the sense that they are a genuine part of the world's folklore and have been around for thousands of years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great inspiration for young artists.
The easy to follow steps have truly inspired my 7 year old. He's been drawing nonstop since we bought the book. The incredible images have helped him learn to add details to his drawings. He is a Deltora fan but I would recommend this book for any dragon and monster lover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You don't see kids' boks like this too often.
I've read elsewhere that this book is about resisting peer pressure. That sub-story is over in the first few pages and really does little but set the scene. What this story is really about is courage, self-sacrifice, and the protection of innocent life against a world that often is far too dangerous. Many adults could benefit from giving this a read and taking it to heart, and yet it's not preachy or over the heads of the children it is targetted towards. Add to this the absolutely gorgeous colored-pencil artwork (Bill Peet worked for Disney for a while; his character designs give the original 101 Dalmations and the Sword in the Stone much of their charm) and some truly memorable characters, and you have my favorite children's book, ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Bill Peet's best stories
This charming story is certain to bring a smile to your face.I love it even more than my son does. The drawings are delightfully done.Bill Peet is one of the very rare children's book authors who are able to produce both an excellent story and great pictures. All of his books are good, but some are better than others; Cyrus is one of his best.

5-0 out of 5 stars "PROTECT THIS TREAT...FOR ME ALONE TO EAT."
My daughter loves this book and is making me do a review on it!She loves the bright, contrasting colors of the excellent illustrations.I appreciate the colors too with the fine use of chiaroscuro and the hungry fiends after Old Witch's Halloween Pie and yes, of course, the silly tombstone epitaphs. The recipe in the back is such an intelligent hook to get the ones that do the buying, us parents, to say yes to this one! I appreciate an entertaining book with clever marketing. You have to not only sell the kids but the parents too--Tunnell and O'Malley--GREAT JOB! 5-0 out of 5 stars A new halloween tradition
We discovered this book two years ago in our public library and fell in love with it. The story is clever and the illustrations are excellent. Even though the book is filled with ghosts and zombies it's not too scary to read to my 3, 4 and 6 year-olds. My favorite thing is how FUN it is for the reader. You can't help but almost perform the story as you read it with witchy and windy voices. It has become a new family tradition for us to read Halloween Pie for the weeks leading up to Halloween each year. And of course, we make our own Halloween pie from the recipe at the back of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mercer Mayer Books Rule!
How to get vital information into your kid in a painless, totally entertaining manner. Mayer covers all kinds of great topics like this book about taking a bath. Little Critter shows us how he does it and give you the chance to point out where he could perhaps be a little more careful. Almost any Mercer Mayer book is worth the money. Also check out "Just Lost" "Just Go To Bed" and "What A Bad Dream!". At around three bucks a pop these are a great value and teach great values without being cloying.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good learner book
just me in the tub by Gina and Mercer Mayer is a good book that will teach kids things to and not to do in the bath tub, such as teachin them not to spill water and to pick up ther toys. In this book the character shows how to do things rite and keep it neat.Read more

I got this book from the library and read to my son. He was hooked on this book instantly after that. He would come to me requesting me to read it to him. I think it helps my son to deal with any scary monsters he had if he had them. Now, my son is infatuated with monsters and loves to read books about them and has NO NIGHTMARES about monsters.

5-0 out of 5 stars SpookyIllustrations, Intense & Detailed
I have the Spanish version of this book. I bought it before my child was born since i loved the pictures. Thought if I ever have a child this would be a really wild book to share. I just loved the illustrations. The pictures are scarry, but beautifully drawn. Now my child is 4, I showed it to him & he was fascinated...can't wait till my other friends kids are old enough to send a copy. If your child likes scary things, or if you are looking for a book to read on Halloween, this book is excellent. Hand drawn color illustrations, with a repetitive rhyme...

5-0 out of 5 stars An extremely attractive story book
My daughter 4-year old with English as second language, firstly being attracted by the mysterious but beautiful illustration of this book.Once we started the reading we found the story very attractive andnon-stopable(fortunately only 30+ pages). After read together with her fortriple, she is able to read aloud by herself. She enjoyed this book verymuch and likes to share with her friends to scare them.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for children who are fascinated by monsters
Don't be scared off by the "Horn" review. This is a great Halloween book for children 4+ unless they are extremely sensitive. Most kids I know are fascinated by monsters and creepy things, and theillustrations in this book, while scary, are rich and beautiful. I teach preschool aged children and we use this story when talking about fears. When I read it I start in a whispered tone, and when she sees the "something" in the atic I yell at the same time she does. The children jump a mile and laugh like mad. We then take a good look at the "something" and the girl. We all belive the "something" is more scard than the girl. 5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST for the unique child
If you want your child to be shown that they can be unique, differant and beautiful, get them this book!! It's fantastic,it not only has the cool gross out features all kids like, but it also has plenty of clever fun rhyming and a GREAT message. The message being,no matter who you are,how bizzare, how much society may put you down, you have the talent you want to have and you can do it. It's a wonderful book,so glad I found this again right before my pregnancy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes me wanna dance!
The story is boffo and the illustrations are fab! This book is an instant classic in my book. Frank is lovable and inspirational. It doesn't matter if the audience runs away or even if he loses his head, Frank just keeps on dancing. Buy this truly awesome book and support Keith Graves so he can keep writing and illustrating them. And Keith, please give us more Frank!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
Absolutely amazing in its story and creativity. My girls love this book. We ordered this for the local library so everyone could enjoy. My three year old has really bonded with frog belly and chants the funny saying. This is a simple but beautiful story.

5-0 out of 5 stars He Loves It
I picked this up one day when I was wasting time at a book store purely because I thought it looked interesting. When I got it home I stuck it on the shelf and completly forgot about it. Then one day my three year old found it, and asked me to read it to him. That was about 3 months ago and we've read it almost every night. It's gotten to the point that I'll screw up the story just so my son can correct me. He's memorized every word.

The artwork is incomparable.Really, that alone is reason enough to buy the book. It's not your typical cutesie kids' book pictures, but something much more.I pulled out my newly arrived copy to show my sister, who paints (and sells) some pieces in a local gallery, and she paged through it again and again. The artwork has that much depth. And the story is very good too, making the book well worth buying.I'm sure I'll be back to look for more from this author/illustrator. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just too funny!
OK, maybe this isn't appropriate subject matter in most (good) families, but it is *really* funny! My daughter Carmen had this book given to her as a gift. She really didn't care much for books at the time. She got kind of interested when she saw that the little girl in the book was also named Carmen. She was almost unable to contain herself when she saw the book was about farts! She couldn't wait to read the book to her dad, grandma & sister. I recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars OK, I hate to be a stick in the mud, but......
I bought this book because I love Robert Munsch's book I Love You Forever. I knew what I was ordering so it's my own fault, but I can't use this book. It's stuck up in my closet and I've never given it to the kids. I have a 6 year old and a 3 year old boy, and I have enough trouble with them talking about things that I'd rather they didn't, so I don't know why I ordered this book. I know they'd think it was funny, but the last thing I really want to do is get them talking about farts all day. I'm sorry, if your kids are more mature I'm sure it would be fine for them. But it definitly wasn't for my family.

This was a funny book, not one of Munsch best, but full of laughs. There's very few books that actually talk about "Farts", well this is one of them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Wildest Brother
Cornelia Funke's story is energetic and fast-paced and is perfectly complemented by Kerstin Meyer's illustrations, which bring Ben's imagination to life (there aren't really any bears or wolves or man-eating monsters, you see). Ben may be mischievous (he paints `blood drops' on Anna's desk using her make-up), but he's a loveable character, and it is his sister's indulgence that really makes the book spark.

2-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it, I really did
When I picked up this book, I had every intention of liking it. I started reading it, and it soon became clear, that it was predictable and boring. I have given it two stars, not because I think it is worth it, but because I put the book down half-way through, so maybe it gets better.

5-0 out of 5 stars The changing face of fantasy
I must admit that I was a bit skeptical upon first seeing this book. The title was certainly strange (as my dad later put it "It sounds like a bad sixties horror movie!") and it seemed more like horror-fantasy than just straight-up fantasy. Even when I read the summary inside the book jacket, the book looked like it might be shallow and violent. Then I started to read...and was hooked. D.M. Cornish has created on of the most incredibly detailed fantasy worlds that I have ever seen. The 18th-century vibe and the mix of German and Latin-seeming words and names is fresh and unique. Cornish's illustrations are very well done and add extra depth to the story. And the massive "explicarium"...well, I've never seen such a comprehensive glossary in any book before. MBT (my abbreviated name for the book) shows that the fantasy genre always has room to grow and change, which it does fantastically. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
