5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
The Franny K. series was just the thing to get my reluctant reader to jump into chapter books. She now reads them over and over, and can't wait for the next ones to come out....we have them all so far and her reading has improved tremendously! Thanks, Jim Benson, for a wonderful series that encourages kids to be their own unique selves!

3-0 out of 5 stars Made a reader of my Grandson
My three year old Grandson loves anything with wheels on it.He has never been interested when I try to get him to look at a book while I read it to him.Now he is bringing this book to me and asking me to read to him.He has decided books can be fun too.

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT!
My 4-year-old son is hugely into Monster Trucks and Monster Jam, so this book is a great pleaser for him. This is the perfect book for young ones who love anything with wheels on it (especially when they're big wheels).

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
This book is very enjoyable with two to four year olds of our family;however, I was disappointed that Tonka was listed on every truck...and not real monster trucks that compete were highlighted....My fault I guess since I didn't realize it was a generic type book.Read more

Miss Vampira is delighted to welcome students to her Ghoul School, wherethey will be expected to learn "a full range of haunting techniques, from basicwailing and groaning to walking through walls." With a classroom full ofskeletons, serpents, and slimy spooks, young Cecil Swot, Zombia, Gloop, and theothers are set up to succeed in Miss Vampira's fiendish curriculum. And in fact, when the report cards come out, almost all have done remarkably well: "Zombia'sconstant fidgeting and unhealthy obsession with reptiles make her a joy to havein school."Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute interactive book
My kids really like this book. It is a nice interactive book. The only drawback I have is you have to duck the monsters head (your hand) everytime you turn the page. Not a big deal really though :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great concept - story ok
My kids love a book that can read to them! The book directs questions to the reader which really encourages interaction. It's a bit annoying that the puppet has to hiccup through the story. But we liked it enough to order the bear book too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, funny science fiction for kids and their parents
Commander Toad is a delight. He's "bold and bright", though not quite as bright as he thinks. His crew (an amalgam of loose takes on Star Wars and Star Trek characters) puts up with his prideful ways, because he is, after all, a good leader.Together with his mixed-gender crew he gets into and out of a wonderful series of scrapes. This book is the first in the series. 5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
Apparently this is either a love it or hate it book, so add me to the former. As to the scary illustrations, look at the cover. It is very indicative of the style of illustrations inside, so anyone who is suprised that this *monster* book has monsterous illustrations wasn't paying attention to the front. What are they supposed to look like, Care Bears? And as to the dangerous issues of ingesting gasoline and turpintine, I just used it as an educational experience and told my son that since these were made up creatures they could do unreal things, like drink poison, which we as humans could never, ever do because we could die. And, wonder of wonders, he got it.Have a little faith in your kids to separate fantasy from reality - if they can't, you have no business reading them monster books anyway.

A young African-American girl named Precious has a stomachache, so she has to stay at home alone while the whole family leaves to plant corn.Mama tells her, "Now remember, don't let nothing and nobody in this house--not even me, 'cause I got a key." Precious's older brother warns her with a wink that, you never know, Pruella the Boo Hag could even try to get in: "She's tricky and she's scary, and she tries to make you disobey yo' mama." Sure enough, the shapeshifting Pruella shows up, first as a big, mean force with lightning hair and burning-cinder eyes; then as a friendly-looking, but more-than-slightly Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Read Aloud!
This is a must if you real aloud to kids.Kids walking by the library a week later could be heard singing the little ditty inside (you'll have to make up your own tune).I read it to Kindergarten through Fifth grades and they all loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Precious and the Boo Hag
I really enjoyed reading this book to my 6 year old granddaughter. She enjoyed it also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knock knock.
Don't let strangers in your house. How much clearer could a person be?Stranger at the door?Don't let them in!End of story. Now you wouldn't always know it, but that kind of admonishment can lead to all sorts of interesting situations and stories.Every year I keep track of all the picture books that win the major awards. Not just the Caldecott, mind you, but also the American Library Association's Best Books of the Year, the Boston-Globe Horn Book Awards, the School Library Journal list, etc.I keep a sharp eye out for any book that manages to get a toehold on as many lists as possible. In 2005 all the regulars were there.Your "Hello, Goodbye Window"s and your "Zen Shorts".But one of the books listed was an unassuming little number by children's author extraordinaire Patricia McKissack entitled, "Precious and the Boo Hag".It didn't get the press it deserved and it was too modest to draw attention to itself, but this little number was one of the best-loved books of the year.A wonderful tale of a young girl outwitting a powerful but not particularly clever boo hag, the book draws together all kinds of great classic storytelling elements without ever becoming bogged down or clunky under its narrative.A ruby in the dust. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best Goosebumps book
Egg Monsters From Mars was a really good book. When I started reading it, I couldn't put it down and I read it in two hours flat! It has mystery, although it's not too scary and the egg monsters from mars turn out to be friendly. It's good but not my favorite goosebumps book. 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars great imagination
My 5 year old sons loves this book, but I must say that some of the other children I have read this book to didn't like it and made them think too much about monsters. My son doesn't get freaked out easily and can appreciate a book with a lot of imagination. The grandfather helps his grandson build a monster trap after hearing a "Monster Theatre show" on an old time radio. Each night they find no monsters so each night they find more stuff laying around the shop to improve on the monster trap, until there is a wonderful monster trap and lots of monsters. Not a real long story, around 25 pages of reading and a sentence to a small paragraph per page. Illustrations are very nice. A lot to talk about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Imaginative!!!
I credit this book with transforming my sons fear of monsters to actually loving them.He now even has an imaginary friend that is a monster! That particular monster now guards under his bed, so he can sleep. In addition to my son, I also loved the book.Imagination abounds!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
So I found this at the library and knew I had to get our own family copy.Liza Lou is spunky and clever and always polite as she gets herself out of predicaments in the swamp.I love reading it in a Southern accent and as soon as I finish my kids beg me to read it again. The illustrations are good, too. It's a hit at our house!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Children's Book
This was my favorite book as a child. It seems like I would get it out of the library almost every week.My mom would read it with a thick bayou-accent and I would laugh and giggle at Liza Lou and her wiley ways. It is a wonderful book and I hope that my daughter (3 months old) enjoys it as much as I did. I live in Pennsylvania, a far cry from the Louisianna bayou, but I grew up and married a boy from Alabama!(I think the accent got me!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining
Liza Lou and the Yellerbelly Swamp is a book that I read as a child. I still have my original copy, but recently purchased a used copy as mine had some missing pages. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I love reading this book to my kids, ages 6 and 8.I enjoy the story as much as they do.It is a simple story, easy and very enjoyable to read.I think the words are clever and have a nice flow to them, and the story is really cute.

The cartoonists of the New Yorker have never been able to resist the siren song of the world of children's book illustration. Some of them, particularly Harry Bliss, have made the transition without so much as a hiccup. And of course it goes the other way around too. William Steig for years drew odd and bizarre little pieces for the mag when he wasn't penning children's classics. Edward Koren is another matter altogether. I've always loved his furry, hairy, wide-eyed people/monsters/birds/etc. Till now only book to his name was his own, "Very Hairy Harry". Now he's been paired with Judy Sierra of, "Wild About Books" fame. The result is, "Thelonius Monster's Sky-High Fly Pie" with black and white pen and inks by Koren. It's not the most original of books and the rhymes leave something to be desired, but it remains amusing enough to satisfy those parents who already like the illustrator or the author and want something droll for the nursery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toddler Mom
My one year old loves this book.It is a wonderful distraction for him when he is getting changed or when I need a minute away from him.The book itself is brightly colored and stimulating for any baby to see.Definitely going to be a keepsake.

My students and I loved the fabulous pop-ups in this book! Though the book is listed as a pre-school book, my second graders loved the verse and the illustrations!
