5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book my children will no doubt remember always.
This book is so cute and the illustrations are really wonderful. It is an easy read and your 5-6 year olds will soon pick up the words. It is my 3 1/2-year-old and 5-year-old's favorite book.5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Book on Manners- A Must!
Like a spoonful of sugar, this fun book on manners makes lessons go down with giggles. With lots of monster exaggeration ("spaghetti sauce on our hair is nice", "stop eating my socks!"), these monsters portray typical etiquette and behavior situations that children encounter. They say please, thank you, and excuse me, return borrowed items, pick up their toys, do their chores, bathe, and exibit good sportsmanship.Sometimes they forget their manners and gobble and grab; sometimes they remember and politely pass the peas.Sometimes they quarrel; sometimes they hug.The illustrations of three lovable, silly monsters are colorful and playful and provide lots of visual humor. In the classroom, this book can be a springboard for discussion or for role-playing good and bad manners. This book is a hit with kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars Some monsters your kids can relate to
Quick, name the most unmannerly group of characters on earth. No, besides a bunch preschoolers overdue for a nap. Monsters, right? According to Bethany Roberts, even monsters have manners sometimes.Thisbook, written in verse, shows monsters at their worst and at their best. For example, "They might be very messy, / and leave things where theydrop. / But they sometimes clean their rooms / and dust and scrub andmop." Every activity the monsters do is something kids can relate to,such as tearing up toys on bad manners days, and happily putting them awayand repairing the broken ones on good manners days.AndrewGlass's monsters are warm and fuzzy. No need to worry about nightmares fromthis book. In fact, these monsters are an awful lot like little kids, whomay sometimes forget their manners, but sometimes they don't. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY CLEVER WELL DONE !
A very enjoyable book! Our kids laughed along with us as we all learned about "The Monsters." I look forward to buying other books by Marilyn.

5-0 out of 5 stars So engrossing!
Once I opened this book I could not put it down. Sure, it's a kid book, but adults will enjoy it too. I'm a big fan of Gris Grimly's artwork, and this book is a showcase. There is a lot of detail in his pictures, so you can just sit and study the pages for a while. The little poems are nice too, but for me, the artwork is what sold it. If you like monsters, you will love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for 2 year old!
When I first saw the book, I thought the mummies, witches and monsters might scare my 2 year old daughter. I was so wrong. She loved the rhyming, repetative words at the end of each page. "Halloween's a time for spells, this witch makes strange things grow. But OOPS she's made her nose too long, OH OH OH!" Long after Halloween was over (much to mom's chagrin) we still want the Halloween book. And she could recite it word for word to me, without my prompting her. She would bring it out at times other than bedtime and want to read it to me- or vice versa. The pop -ups were colorful and animated. I would recommend the Snappy series to all moms of toddlers. We had the Christmas and Snowtime versions last Christmas ( my daughter was 18 months) she would sit for half an hour as long as someone read them to her over and over. A great way to introduce kids to reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars All that and more!
Everything in the previous reviews is absolutely on the mark! An additional joy to this book for my 4-year-old is the way in which many of the pages can be made to "perform" -- the skeleton dances, the haunted suit of armor can "clank" up and down, etc. My son is a great fan of puppetry (my girlfriend is a professional puppeteer, which helps), and this brings a little of a show into bedtime (or any time) reading. Several of his friends also have the book and love it!

My daughter was given an autographed copy of this book as a gift.As far as I'm concerned, the autograph is the best part of the book.

Maggie is a resourceful little girl who plays in Nowhere Land with her friends Hamilton Hocks and the Ferocious Beast.Put together by mother and son Betty and Michael Paraskevas, the trio is quite charming. In this story, the friends run across Nedley, a cantankerous rabbit trying to dig up an enormous carrot. Will he need help? Will he accept help? Will he share the Big Carrot?Maggie & Co. prove entirely up to the challenge, as usual!5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!

These poems are clever and fun to hear. The illustrations bring the words to life.My kids ask me to read these over and over again.(Fun for parents too.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry of the grotesque
This is a very handsome book in which the author and the illustrator have collaborated with remarkable skill. The verse is always amusing but cangive a young reader some pleasant shivers. The array of grotesquecreatures - gremlins, goblins, basilisks, gargoyles, headless ghosts - ispresented most fascinatingly by the very brilliant artist, while the authorgives the faintly sinister but always poetic nature of the pictures afrequent dimension of humour. My seven-year-old granddaughter fellimmediately in love with the book which I greatly enjoyed reading out toher, but her ten-year-old brother and twelve-year-old sister were just astaken with it. In fact her elder brother and sister could appreciate rathermore than she did how witty some of the verse is. Certainly a book I canrecommend unreservedly to all lovers of books - young and old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monsters have feelings too!
I purchased this book for my almost-three-year old whom adores a gargoyle statue I own.On first reading, the monsters frightened her. However, she quickly picked up on the humor and emotions in the poems. She delights inthe poems now and is less afraid of monsters.I would suggest that parentsuse a lot of goofy humor & voice fluctuations when reading the stories.Young children with a fear of monsters or an undeveloped sense of humor mayneed to grow into this book. Also, there are only 3 gargoyle poems, thebalance are werewolf, vampire, gobblins, and boogeyman poems. This is nowmy daughter's favorite goodnight book..and no nightmares! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and empowering for all children, especially daughters
As a child, this book was my favorite. At the time, I was too young to realize that among all its virtues as a storybook (a mythologically-gripping plot and breathtaking illustrations) was a finely woven thread that spoke of the bravery it takes to right a wrong, how adversity reveals character, and how perserverance, fearlessness, and strength are characteristics valued in girls, as well as boys.
5-0 out of 5 stars Memories
This was a book that I received at a very young age and has been treasured for many years. Now that I am shortly going to be a mother I can't help but want to pass this magical book down to my daughter. Today, I purchased as many books illustrated by Mercer Mayer that I could and hope that his works are never forgotten and live on, at least in my family.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story for All
This is a telling of love and promises. You will be transported to a place of beauty and harsh reality. i read this story to my daughter for many years. The excellent drawings set a picture in the mind. I have told this story as a spoken tale to rapt audiences, at such diverse settings as an extended family thanksgiving dinner, to an on the job construction crew ( having to use a very loud voice ) none of whom ever would let me not finish the entire telling. 5-0 out of 5 stars Actually this one is more like "Michael Does Kung Fu!"
"Little Vampire Does Kung Fu!" ("Petit Vampire fait du Kung-Fu!") begins not with the Little Vampire but his young human friend, Michael, who tells his grandfather how he was picked on, de-pants, and beaten up by the kids at school.Michael's Grandpa tells him he did the right thing by not fighting, but the young boy is not sure.He was humiliated and is so angry that he wants to kill his tormentors. When Michael tells his story again at the Little Vampire's dog Phantomat has a few brutal suggestions as to what should be done to Michael's chief tormentor, Jeffrey. But Little Vampire has a different solution and takes Michael to see Rabbi Solomon, the Kung fu master, who lives in a painting in Little Vampire's house.
1-0 out of 5 stars I would not recommend it.
Ultimately, I think this book attempts to show the futility of fighting in order to resolve disagreements. But it uses rather violent images and notions to deliver this message including: revenge killing, cannibalism, religious mysticism, etc. This book could serve to desensitize young readers to the pain and suffering of others, in the same way that violent 5-0 out of 5 stars nothing quite like it!
Now here's a rare treat... A clever, zany romp in the continuing adventures of Little Vampire. It's an unpredictable, rambling adventure, brimming with inventiveness and full of heart -- and it's a comic book. Kids 6 and up will find lots to delight in, but it's aimed at the 10 and up, who will revel in the wit and exuberant artwork. I'd bet the books in the Little Vampire series become classics in no time. Definitely nothing else like these.Read more

When a young lad organizes a Halloween party, he doesn't realize that it is all of the uninvited guests who will cause him so much trouble.
