3-0 out of 5 stars The wisdom of a shorter book
In "The Wisdom of War" Buffy and the Scobby Gang find themselves in the middle of a war between two classes of ocean dwelling demons, ones that most vampires are instictivly afraid of.If that wasn't bad enough she gets thrown several curve balls to hamper progress. One is the Watcher's Council has sprung Faith from prison to help them clean up the mess (as usual, the Council has news they will not share with Buffy or Giles).Aslo a new supernatural hunting club has arrived in Sunnydale to sort of help.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Buffy Novels
As it is with most Buffy novels it isn't the monster that you are battling its the internal conflicts with the group. And when Faith is added to the Buffy equation things get a bit intense. Buffy has her own past demons to trump, just like new good girl Faith. And in the end this book is a thrilling ride with a wonderfully ending that gives you a sense of peace over the Faith and Buffy debacle.

4-0 out of 5 stars B and Faith!
This book was quite good.I LOVE how the author was very familliar with the show, and made the B and Faith relationship what it should be.It brought up her past and taking over of her body.Good book :).If only it was an ep! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER MUST HAVE FOR YOUR LIBRARY
THE OTHER REVIEWERS ARE RIGHT ON.I NEVER LIKED 'WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE' AS A KID & WASN'T TOO INTERESTED IN TRYING ANY OF MAYERS OTHER BOOKS.I'M SO GLAD I RECONSIDERED.WE LOVE THIS BOOK! PRONOUNING SOME OF THE MONSTERS' NAMES TAKES A LITTLE GETTING USED TO, BUT OUR TODDLER LOVES IT SO MUCH, THAT THE NAMES JUST ROLL OFF OUR TONGUES NOW.

5-0 out of 5 stars childhood favorite
Although now in my mid thirties, I still remember the story and illustrations from this book -- my childhood favorite. Now that my friends' children are almost to reading age, I plan to give this book for birthdays and holidays so that others can enjoy the whymsical tale with ornate illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too small!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful and not too scary
This book is a fun children's book about the monsters who come out to haunt children in their bedrooms at night.Yes, these monsters frighten the little boy who tells the story, but they're really not all that scary. They have amusing body shapes, along the lines of Monsters, Inc., and instead of saying "Boo", they engage in forbidden activities like sitting on the dresser or playing ball in the house. When faced with this monster problem, the boy seeks the aid of his parents.Together, they discuss the problem and brainstorm a solution. Then they enact the solution together as a team, and the monsters all jump out the window so that the boy can feel safe as he goes back to bed.The pictures are very engaging, and many young children get the giggles upon seeing the monster with the painted toenails. With only one or two sentences per page, the book is a great choice for a short story-hour selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating, Fresh & Funny--Good for many, MANY readings!!!
The illustrations and text of this book are amazing!!!Because the illustrations are so expressive and descriptive, the author is able to tell this captivating story with very few memorable sentences per page.My three children (ages 7,5,3) LOVE this story!!It is requested often at our house; I think I enjoy reading it as much as they enjoy hearing it and talking about the illustrations.5-0 out of 5 stars Too many monsters is empowerment for children!
James Bernardin's illustrations in "too many monsters" are nothing short of AMAZING! I have never written a review before but I just had to on his work. The illustrations are mystifying! Vibrant and captivating! The expressions on the faces of the characters really do something to you as they leap off the page demanding your full attention. My daughter (age three) stops me from turning the page just so she can stare at the expressions drawn on the characters faces (I KNOW what she's looking at because I'm seeing what she's seeing but I can't put my finger on the magic!) I cannot find the words to express to anyone out there how awesome this book trully is Especially for the younger children. Eve bunting writes very "simply" to the younger reader, a story of a young boy getting tucked in for bed and what happens after that. Magical all across the board this book empowers children in a simple yet brilliantly imaginative way to laugh instead of fear what might lurk in the dark. My daughter has made me read this book five or more times each night and you know what? I myself REALLY ENJOY reading this over and over with her triumphantly celebrating with the characters of this book when its time for this family to take back whats thiers! JAMES BERNARDIN you have outdone yourself! Please include "this" family in another one of your books the expressions are PRICELESS and FULL OF LIFE! I'm buying! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Average, Okay Book
Plot: 15-year-old Jake Lefkovitz travels to the Amazon, where his father (a bat biologist) and his research team are on an expedition. Two of Dr. Lefkovitz's workers are missing. As it turns out, the two workers were mutilated by a giant bat. Jake, Dr. Lefkovitz, and the workers must find a way to stop the bat.3-0 out of 5 stars Ok but nothing special
It was an ok book but there were definite flaws in it. First off he does a bad job of describing some of the traps used in defeating the bat- that could just be me. Once the boy was left to face the bat alone it was pretty unrealistic that he could kill it when they couldn't when the whole group was there. Zindel is capable of much better but it is still worth the time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bats
Zindel's newest and last book depicts a boy and his father fighting a giant bat. 15-year old Jake, flies to the Amazon where his father is having a expedition. His father is a zoologist, a person who studies bats. 2 men have gone missing. Jake and Hanuma go to see where the men are and find out they have been devoured by bats. On the way back Hanuma is killed by a giant bat. {Hanuma screamed as his chest was torn open and his blood spilled onto the pathway}. Next is the cook, who meets a gruesome fate. Finally, after Rasdyr is killed Jake and his father set out to kill the bat. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kipper's Monster- a page turner for my 2 1/2 year old
My son loved this book.In fact, we picked it up at the library and I have to admit I was concerned about the "monster" thing. In fact, he loved it so much, I'm buying it for it.We gave our son a flashlight and later that evening we used the flashlight and got under the covers like Kipper and Tiger and he absolutely loved reading the book under the covers with the flashlight!I also used the flashlight to show him how to make shadow puppets, similiar to the snail shadow in the book.He thought all of it was way cool!We read it quite often. My son did not find it "scary" as the previous reviewer, but again, each child is different.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my favourite Kipper book.
We borrowed this one from the library. In this book, Tiger has a new torch (flashlight, for the non-Brits).He wants to try it out so Kipper and Tiger go for a camp-out in the woods. They are attempting to read a "scary" story, but then they hear a loud "SCREECH" in the woods. The noise is not explained in the book, although the pair guess that it must have been an owl that made the noise.Next a shadow appears on the tent wall.It turns out to be a snail - not scary at all! Finally, the two friends return home and read the book inside the house.Even though this book has a "safe" ending, the screech noise, "scary" book, and shadow on the tent wall did not make this a book that my 3 year old wanted to read again and again.Instead, after one or two readings, it sat on the table, unopened, until it was returned to the library. This is not one that I, personally, would buy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Monster Mischief Indeed!
I was instantly drawn to Monster Mischief by the happy cover page. It's simple, but effective, and if you're looking for fun, non-scary Halloween books, the dancing monsters with wide grins will set you curious. The text is amusing and colorful, and bounces along. There are only 32-sentences in this book, so an attentive 3-years old will appreciate the tale.

4-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for the beasts
Ginger Wald has to go on a camping trip with her Mom, Dad and her twin brothers Nat and Pat. Nat and Pat look so much alike they confuse each other. Then when they go exploring they get lost in a weird part of the jungle. The grass is yellow, the bushes are purple and the trees are like skyscrapers. Then they meet the beasts tall blue furry creatures with small eyes. They want Ginger to play a game like Tag, except the losers get eaten.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
The Beast from the East is an awesome book. When I was reading it, I felt like I was there, escaping from all the dangers of the woods with Ginger Wald and her identical twin brothers, Nat and Pat. While on a picnic, Ginger's parents tell her, Nat, and Pat to go into the woods and explore for a while. So they do. After a long time, they get lost, and have no clue which way to go. While talking about getting back to their camp site, they find a GIGANTIC footprint and the ground suddenly starts to shake. That forces them to hide behind some of the strange-looking plants. Then, they meet the blue, furry, beasts. They seem friendly....sort of. They want to play a game similar to tag. But in the game, if you're It when it ends......you get eaten. The ending of the book is creepy. R.L. Stine sure knows how to write a book. I didn't want to put it down. I know that a lot of kids will really, REALLY enjoy this great Goosebumps book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is the best book EVER!!!!!
I love all of the goosebump and fearstreet books that R.L Stine has written, but this one is my absolute favorite of all time books, ever!!!!! I wish that R.L Stine would write a part two of the Beast From the East, or better yet, do a movie on it!! that would be so coooooooooooollll!!!!!!!!My most favorite part is when Ginger and Pat have to get in that small cave with all those bugs in it!! EWWWWWWWWW! That would be sooo gross if you actually had to do that some time!!Anyway, all I wanted to say is that the book IS cool, so DO get it, and I SO DO wish that they would make a movie out of it. And one more thing, R.L STINE RULES!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cerasini Makes A Giant LIVE...!
The Godzilla series has its own, built-in, mythology. All G-fans study the movies to the last detail, & most debate various monster vs monster match-ups.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good ,but not the best
This book is pretty good but not as good as Marc Cerasini's other books. It does have some good parts to it.I enjoyed the part where Godzilla battles a tornado and I also like the ending battle with Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidora. There are some not so great parts to it. Kamacuras do NOT eat people!!!Over all, I thought it was rather like a real godzilla movie, not great but not bad! Dylan, 10 years old

4-0 out of 5 stars Godzilla and Company in a Whole New Light
Marc Cerasini has written GODZILLA 2000, a story of the millennium, apocalypse and giant monsters. But this is not just a giant monster book.As Robert Price of Crypt of Cthulhu notes, Cerasini has taken these monsters and rid them of their taint of cartoonism.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thirteen O'clock
A creative story with a great typesetting and a good amount of alliteration. The best part about this book, however, isn't the story, the prose, the way the type is set up, but it is in fact, the illustrations. It's set in darkly toned colours and fairly simple drawings, each of which are extremely adorable.
5-0 out of 5 stars A gem!
The illustrations of Thirteen O'clock are enough of a reason to buy this darling of a book. In simple white, black and a shade of green, the scene comes to life in a marvelous way. A simple story that will have your tongue rolling in fun, and plant a smile on your face. A heart worming book that will set the stage for, what I hope will be, more books by Mr. Stimson.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A skeleton with a skeleton's key..."
I love the illustrations in this book and its innovative concept: a quirky clock that actually chimes at thirteen, quite unlike the ordinary timekeeper, that only runs from one to twelve. Stimson's brilliant illustrations remind me of my favorite animated films, The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, with the eccentric faces of unusual characters that pop out at the chime of each hour: "a spiteful FRIGHT who would have seemed more at home with his name on a tombstone"; a skeleton with a skeleton's key to "unlock the odd clock's small door to free his MONSTROUS friend, the THING"; "four ghosts with frightening groans (in their stomachs)"; and "with each haunting clue there came another, more horticulturally hideous than the other".

5-0 out of 5 stars Find a Friend Under the Bed!
My son was scared at Halloween by older kids in a costume. We got him this book to help discuss monsters and help him get over his fear. Anytime we want to discuss monsters, we pull out this book and use it to talk about his fears.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will not read this to my children
There is no monsters!!! This book will make your kids think there are really monsters living under their beds. Bad idea!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite for Parents and Kids
We heard this book at Storytime at our local library and fell in love with it. The kids loved the boy and the monster teaching their Moms that there is "such a thing", and all the mothers in the room were laughingat the familiar nightime ritual of little boys-- with a surprise ending. Itis my favorite children's book and I think every kid should have it. Letthem go to bed laughing about monsters under the bed, instead of beingafraid of them. ... Read more

Ten colorful monsters go on a picnic. While they are there, theyengage in a variety of activities from playing in the sand to running from bees. The monsters are comical and engaging. The story shows the combinations ofnumbers that add to ten in a logical sequence.I used it as a countingbook for a preschooler as well as a friendly format for addition andsubtraction concepts for a first grader. The book is designed to helpparents and grandparents introduce children to mathematical ideas.Thebook ends with five math activities by Marilyn Burns. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Three and a half - not as good as Skeleton Man but still worthwhile
Joseph Bruchac, author of Skeleton Man, includes Shawnee traditions and tales in this suspenseful story. The main character is Armie Katchatorian, a Shawnee-Armenian-American who is a student in the North Mountains School. He is sent there because his humanitarian lawyer parents don't seem to have time for him with all their work and travel. He always has seemed to be especially in tuned to nature and animals have always been drawn to him. It is this sensitivity that strongly draws him to a dark pond in the woods. But there seems to be a deadly force that is under the water. Fellow Native American, Mitch Sabattis, helps Armie to learn about the pond and its dark force, and ultimately stopping it.
3-0 out of 5 stars It's not Skeleton Man, but it's OK.
This book, based on tales told by Native Americans in the Northeast, is a story by Joseph Bruchac, a member of the Abenaki tribe.I couldn't help but compare it to Skeleton Man by the same author and the same premise of taking a traditional story and putting it in contemporary society. The characters never became alive in this story. It's an excellent story of itself, but the story is the thing here, not the characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Monster Manor Books: Witty and Fun
I have to disagree with the first reviewer. I'm a school teacher, and when I came across the Monster Manor series, I had to read all of them straight through. They're witty and charming, and I couldn't help but laugh out loud. The repeated beginning in each book will appeal to younger readers, and the jokes, which are completely contemporary, will appeal to older kids. The names of the characters are sweet puns, especially the family of skeletons: The Femurs. The captions in the drawings add the right note of silliness to the plot. Each chapter ends with an ironic joke which is cheerfully played upon in the next chapter. The author plays with the genre's stereotypes; Count Snobula is a snob who lost all his money; Beatrice is a witch who can't do any magic; Wolf Man Stu can't seem to scare anyone. Frankie Rocks the House is my favorite; the most innocent character unknowingly becomes a rock star. Like any good series for younger readers, Monster Manor creates a eagerness to find out what mischief the characters are up to next. I highly recommend this series. ... Read more
