4-0 out of 5 stars Who doesn't love Anne?
The author of this book is shamelessly sentimental.I will admit that I have been known to skip entire chapters because the incessant romanticism makes me want to hurl. However, it remains one of my favorites, maybe for the sole reason that Anne has red hair.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anne of Green Gables
If you like to read about a person who hopes and dreams and has romance then you will like this book called Anne of Geen Gables it full of hopes and dreams I know because I have read it Its about a little girl getting adopted by a brother and sister and falls in love with a boy that she grew up with

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!
I have read this book many times. Anne is such a captivating girl! You will enjoy this book. The characters are so real. 4-0 out of 5 stars Read immediately after finishing The Story Girl!
I enjoyed The Golden Road, but not as much as I enjoyed The Story Girl. I recommend you read the two novels together, one right after the other. If you enjoy reading books set in a long-ago era, the books have a charm to them. If you like action, these books will not appeal to you as much. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Two books I have read over and over....
The Golden Road and its prequel, The Story Girl, are two of the best books I have ever read. I never seem to get tired of them, either...I have read them countless times! If you enjoy L. M. Montgomery's novels, such as the Anne of Green Gables series, these books are a must. The Golden Road tells the story of cousins, Beverley (who narrates the story), Felix, Cecily, Felicity, Dan, and Sara Stanley, also known as the Story Girl, plus their friends Peter, the hired boy, and Sara Ray. The adventures these eight have are sometimes exiting, sometimes sad...but mostly really funny! For instance, one time, they have the governors wife to tea...but they think she's their deaf Aunt Eliza and comment on the governors big nose and such things! And Felicity accidentally bakes tooth-powder rusks...oh, I can't tell you the whole book! Read it for yourself!

Editorial Review

When Marilla Cuthbert's brother, Matthew, returns home to Green Gableswith a chatty redheaded orphan girl, Marilla exclaims, "But we asked for a boy.We have no use for a girl." It's not long, though, before the Cuthberts can'timagine how they could ever do without young Anne of Green Gables--but not forthe original reasons they sought an orphan. Somewhere between the time Anne"confesses" to losing Marilla's amethyst pin (which she never took) in hopes ofbeing allowed to go to a picnic, and when Anne accidentally dyes her hatedcarrot-red hair green, Marilla says to Matthew, "One thing's for certain, nohouse that Anne's in will ever be dull." And no book that she's in will be,either. This adapted version of the classic, Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars shallow, sappy, and uninvolving
I described this book as shallow in my review title because of the undue importance placed on physical appearance.Kilmeny is presented as literally the most beautiful woman that the worldy-wise Eric has ever seen. When Eric's father questions his decision to marry a mute girl of lowly birth, all Eric says is, "Wait until you see Kilmeny."Maybe he meant that her sweetness and purity of heart are so strong as to be easily discernable on first glance, but that sentiment makes it seem to me like he values her first and foremost for the way that she looks. It is established that Eric has never before met a woman who "made his heart skip a beat," and that he knows pretty early on that Kilmeny is the only girl for him. Why, though, does it have to be because she is the most beautiful woman ever? Why can't there just be something indefinable about her that attracts him?The way the story is set up, it makes it seem like Eric never fell in love before because he never met a woman quite beautiful enough, and that Kilmeny's humble (even scandalous) birth and her disability are forgiven because she is just so very pretty.Yes, he also admires her musical ability and the liveliness of her mind, but her appearance is what he dwells on most.I actually think that the book would have been more palatable if she had been somewhat plain. The handsome, rich, sophisticated newcomer in a small town falls in love with a mute and homely recluse because of her childlike innocence, wit, intelligence, and talent?Sounds better to me than "man with untouchable heart finally meets a woman lovely enough to catch his eye."
4-0 out of 5 stars Simple yet charming
Utterly predictable and in some ways a feminist's nightmare, still I adore this book. Handsome, kind and perfect Eric, exiled in a small country town due to his generosity and compassion to a friend in need, instantly falls under the spell of lovely, talented and innocent Kilmeny when he comes upon her playing her violin in an abandoned orchard. The lyrical and supremely romantic passage describing this encounter etched the never-seen image into my memory - the blossoming trees, the quality of the light, the textures of Kilmeny's dress, the ethereal music. When Kilmeny runs away in terror, a confused Eric, irrevocably pinned by cupid's arrow, attempts to find out who she is. But Kilmeny has a secret and no one in the town is talking ...
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Very good language/description but one can get a bit tired of perfect, poetic beauty and ethereality by the end. The plot is even less probable than usual for Montgomery. Worth reading because it is very well written but not one of Montgomery's best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming!
In my opinion, this is the best novel that L.M. Montgomery has authored. The characters are enchanting and the story is filled with heartwarming adventures. Despite the fact that it was written in the late eighteen hundreds, this story has a distinct feeling of nostalgia. This is the type of novel that belongs beside a cheery fire with a cup of cocoa and a snoozing kitty. This is a story that will remain in the heart of the reader forever.
4-0 out of 5 stars L.M. Montgomery IS The Story Girl
It's no wonder that the lady who has gifted us with the Anne of Green Gables series created a character referred to as The Story Girl, one who could transport her audience to a far-away, magical place through the gift of storytelling.4-0 out of 5 stars L.M. Montgomery, queen of the heroine
Anything you read by LMM will posess many amazing qualities, including heroines any young woman can look up to and admire. The Story Girl is no exception.Sara Stanley, like many of LMM's heroines, hasn't always had the best life, but she can spin a tale that will captivate everyone she meets. As she grows up and makes friends readers will love her spirit and her vitality.Another must read in the long list of LMM classics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite ANNE book!!!!!!!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS BOOK! This is my favorite Anne book, hands and hooves down. I liked hearing about Anne's full transition into womanhood and the fact that she never really let her full spirit be crushed. Gilbert was a little too soppy in this story, but it is okay. And I really, really enjoyed the wedding scene. And the whole Leslie Moore story is so exciting, but sad...until she meets the sexy (by 1900's terms :-p )Owen Ford! And Captain Jim is something else...he is such an enjoyable, lovable character and the story of lost Margaret is slightly cliched (perfect love swept away, man vows never to love anyone else), but WONDERFUL.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Treasure
This book is about finally finding your true love and creating a home for him.Anne's House of Dreams is fairly anticlimatic, and does not have quite the same romantic suspense as Anne of the Island. But the reader cannot help but be taken in by the turn of the century seaside setting and the dreamy quality of the narrative.Anne finds happiness with longtime friend and beau Gilbert Blythe. We see the mature Anne as a young married woman who still has adventures. She meets a host of other characters, neighbors who enrich the story. There are stories within stories, spooky nights, misty harbours, and safe shores.I was rooting for Anne as she danced along the seashore, singing to herself, taking up her skirts by the waves. And she makes friends and acquaintances along the way.A pleasant book altogether. It takes you to a place you want to go back.

4-0 out of 5 stars passionate couple--but not who you think!
The passionate, sexy couple in this novel aren't Gilbert and Anne, even though they are newlyweds. It's handsome Owen Ford and the beautiful Leslie Moore who are passionately in love. They are one hot, gorgeous couple--in fact, they make Anne and Gilbert seem dull, bland and boring by comparison!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good!
The beginning is kind of boring, and so I was thinking if I should stop reading this book. But I didn't and kept going on. It got more interesting. Anne meets many new people, and faces many adventures. It's a great book after all. It feels like you are really there with her.

3-0 out of 5 stars It has treasured Anne moments, but I was underwelmed.
As much as I adore the Anne of Green Gables series this newer print edition of volume four was not the pleasant, can't put it down read that I've come to expect with the L.M. Montgomery novels.I have been collecting the books in all prints, shapes, sizes etc. for many years. While this novel adds to the collection it did nothing for me in the way of beloved Anne entertainment. Many passages had been omitted, this left me a bit confused and not ready to move on from one chapter to the next do to feeling as though I had missed something. You can certainly give this read a shot, but it isn't near as good and the first three novels in the Anne of Green Gables series.

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT ADDITION TO THE SERIES
Like the rest of the series, I enjoyed this one as much as the first. The author changes be technique a bit here and uses a lot of Anne's letter, as well as others. On the other hand, the author sticks to her wonderful style, syntax and story line.Again, as with other books by L.M. Montgomery, the reader must remember when they were written. My wife and I have been reading these books for years now and they have lost none of their charm. (As a side note, being a very old man, one might think the romantic aspects of the books might not appeal to me...wrong!I too, like a couple of the other reviewers was just a wee bit put off by Montgomery's excluding mush the the romantic lines in Anne's letters).Recommend this one highly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars i read this over and over again.
this book never gets old.i've had it for so long and now i'm off to college and i still enjoy reading it cover to cover.anne is a great character, one who is easy to love and who explains herself well.the other characters are also quirky.something about this book is very universal, which i think explains why even in this century i still find myself being able to relate to Anne.the plot, while essentially a love story, is not overly sappy.and while most people would probably expect the ending, the twists and turns throughout the novel keep you entertained and engaged.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
"Anne of the Island" is my favorite Anne book, and the last chapters of my copy are worn and torn because I have read it so many times.I loved it as a young girl, and I loved it again when I read it from my college dorm room (in fact, I think it's time for another rereading!).Plus, of course, a college education makes many of the literary references more relevant than they were at age 11.
5-0 out of 5 stars ENJOYED THIS THIRD OF THE SERIES AS MUCH AS THE FIRST
The story of Anne continues with this work and the author stays true to her style, story line and character developement. This, like the other books in this series, have a rather timeless nature about them and a comforting charm. The reader, of course, must remember the time they were written and the style and syntax used at that time. From my own point of view, this is great.I enjoy this type of writing and certainly enjoy Ms. Montgomery's story telling abilities. In this work, Anne goes off to Redman College and her adventure continues.Recommend these books for readers of all ages.Wish there were more works out there like it. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Too Depressing to be an Anne Shirley Story
I wish L.M. Montgomery had stopped at book number seven. The joy in reading the "Anne of Green Gables" series was that they were so optimisitic, humorous, and full of hope and happiness. This book was such a downer that I wish I hadn't read it - but how could I know I'd wish that until after I'd read it? I loved the first seven books, but if you can stand not to read the final book of a series, I'd recommend skipping this one. It was a real disappointment for me. If I want to read history and stories about "the real world" (which I certainly often do), then I would choose a book that I expected to be about that. This book does not belong in the "Anne" series.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books of all time
This book is one of the most beautiful ever written. It's especially powerful if you've read the whole series. I often tell people that one of the reasons I love this book so much is because by book 8, you know these characters so well that L.M. Montgomery doesn't have to explain things to you. She just mentions a simple event and it's heart-breakingly beautiful (for those of you who know this story, I'm thinking about Walter bringing her flowers in place of Jem...). I cry buckets every time I read it, but also leave the book feeling a little better about the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book
I really liked this book. Especially when they talk about Rilla's "War Baby" Jims Anderson. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From a queer, young girl to an attractive auburnette schoolteacher...
Even though L.M. Montgomery did not intend Anne of Green Gables to be a series, she still captivates with her eager readers in Anne of Avonlea.
1-0 out of 5 stars Boring Boring Boring!
How could anyone sit and read this boring work of fiction.I am actually listening to the audio version and I am almost falling asleep and cannot remember a word the reader has said.
5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY NICE FOLLOW UP - GOOD READING
Being a L.M. Montgomery fan helps of course, but this second book in her series is a great sequel to the Anne of Green Gables which started it all.The writing hold true to the author's form and the character development is as good as the first work in the series. My wife and I have been reading these books for years and never tire of them.Again, as with her first work, you have to remember the time these were written and the style and syntax used at that time. This particlar story starts where the last left off, Anne is sixteen and her adventure continues.I, for some reason, find these books rather comforting to read and recommend them highly. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is pretty wonderful. It's not quite as good as the Anne and Emily books, but it is one that I love to re-read every so often.I can identify with Pat and her love for her home and not wanting things to change, but dealing with the changes and learning to get along in the world. The descriptions are great, and there are many funny and touching episodes.I also enjoy Judy's Irish dialect, it makes her a fun character. This is definitely a must-read if you like Anne and Emily and the others. However, the sequel, Mistress Pat, was not very good at all.I've only read that one once, but it was boring and seemed a bit pointless. But Pat of Silver Bush is excellent and highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Coming of Age
Although Pat of Silverbush is not L.M. Montgomery's biggest triumph, it performs up to expectations. The story is firmly rooted in reality as it tells the story of Pat Gardiner, her family, and life at Silverbush, Pat's beloved home. The book follows Pat's expansive imagination in her childhood, and then her struggles to accept change as her family changes as she grows older. The book ends when Pat is eighteen, but her story is picked up in Mistress Pat (which I have not yet read). The book does slow down at times, and there are a few predictable events, but overall this is a charming story about a farming family on PE Island that will bring a sigh of contentment out of any reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite LMM novel so far
I have read the entire Anne series, The Blue Castle, Kilmeny of the Orchard, The Story Girl and The Golden Road...but Pat of Silver Bush touched me in a way that none of the other novels did.The book follows Patricia Gardiner from age seven to age eighteen, but does not seem rushed. There is no complicated plot involving secret identities and there is very little melodrama, in my opinion.Pat of Silver Bush is "character-driven" and realistic. It celebrates the beauty of home and of everyday life.Over and over, the descriptions made me shiver and sigh. The episode in which Pat gets lost after running away from her aunt's house and meets Jingle on the road is wonderful.I sympathized with Pat's fear and with her relief and, finally, with the overwhelming joy she feels when she arrives home and sees the windows all lit up.When Pat stayed out after dark with her friends (or alone) I could almost feel the way the evening air would brush against my cheeks and shoulders if I were out on a summer night on Prince Edward Island.Pat's friendship with Bets is sweet and realistic. It made me think, "Every kid should have at least one really close friend like that."Pat's infatuations with different boys when she is a teenager are also realistic...they reminded me of some of my own experiences, even though I was a teenager in the 1990's!If you are a sensitive person who delights in little pleasures (and if you like a book that will make you cry), read Pat of Silver Bush. The only thing about the book that got annoying at times was Judy's dialect.I think readers can imagine an Irish brogue without constantly seeing it spelled out phonetically.I won't dock my rating any stars for it, though. It can be distracting, but it doesn't really take away from the novel. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
It doesn't have the charm or enthusiasm of the other books; it is an okay stand-alone, but Anne, Gil, and the 6 Blythe kids are actually background characters, especially Anne and Gilbert! It is okay alone, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Halairious
This book is, in my opinion, one of the very funniest in the series.
5-0 out of 5 stars And the fine traditions carry over into a new generation...
Although this book has little about Anne in it, I think the author was right in focusing on the children. After all, as a mother of 6, I don't think there would be much story to Anne.Obviously her life at this point, even with Susan's help, consisted of working in her home and for her family. This was still during a time when there were few machines to make tasks easier, and the work never ended. All through the book she is there for her children as she was in Anne of Ingleside, but now the story is theirs and that of their friends. She was able to move the story of Anne along while bringing in new characters and fresh storylines.Because of the devices she used, she was able to make the 8th book as interesting as the first one.The author was also possibly employing the same strategies advertisers employ today to sell their wares. She could have been using Anne's name to sell more books.Whatever, it's still a delightful read! ...
