5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
As a future teacher in an ethnically diverse society, I am very concerned about presenting positive views of other cultures.I stress "positive" because too many books present a negative, stereotyped view of others who fill our world. My search for the perfect "good" book to present a positive message about a black child who did not speak English incorrectly was not easy.I finally did find a book which turned out to be better than I expected. 3-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant but a little pale
When the characters of a book spend the whole thing wondering if what's been going on is real magic or not, it' safe to assume the magic is not dramatic and thunderous.
4-0 out of 5 stars We are the magic
First, I recommend that you read the book "Half-Magic" first. That is Mr. Eager's best book, and it sets the tone for every other book he wrote. You get a feel for the type of characters he has in his stories, and the theme of magic having rules, which is absolutely critical in this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Magic or not, this is a GREAT book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute New Halloween Story Complete With A Lesson
Halloween is here, and Charley is upset for he has just moved to a new neighborhood on Milton Street, where he has seen no kids, and everyone seems to be a grumpy old adult. As if that weren't bad enough, Charley's Mother is sick in bed, and has given him an ultimatum, either he goes trick-or-treating with his stepfather, or he can't go at all. Much to his chagrin, Charley heads out with his stepfather, expecting a boring Halloween. However, he is treated to a lovely surprise. At every house he visits, the adults are dressed up in costumes. Skeletons, vampires, mummies, and more. And as he returns home, Charley finds something even greater, a wonderful Halloween party thrown in his honor, that makes him realize that Milton Street isn't really so bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars go look for pineapple place!
This is one of Anne Spencer Lindbergh's most exciting novels. For any kid who has ever crawled to the back of a coat closet, hoping in vain that a portal to Narnia would suddenly appear, this is the novel that will get you out of the house and into the streets of your neighborhood, keeping up your quest. The idea (a recurring one in Lindbergh's excellent and hilarious stories) that August Brown, a not-so-perfect child living a not-so-perfect life, can stumble upon magic in the middle of all the unrelieved boredom of modern life is incredibly appealing. That the people who live in Pineapple Place are only visible to August Brown does not make them any less real and the knowledge that even those who live magical lives have troubles which an unmagical friend can help to solve is an incredible lesson. The writers Edward Eager and C.S. Lewis would be proud of their legacy continued in such a fun, contemporary context. Visit Pineapple Place today!

5-0 out of 5 stars The People in Pineapple Place
This book is great!I think that Anne (NOT MORROW) Lindbergh's books are way too out-of-print and that Amazon (hint, hint)should start getting more copies. It's about a group of families who can't leave the street where they live. They don't age and have been traveling since 1939. They are invisible to ordinary people.A boy 'sees'one of them and is invited to stay in Pineapple Place. But the founder of Pineapple Place, Mr. Sweeney, puts his foot down...

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!!
This book was first read to me by my fourth grade teacher and I instantly fell in love with it...I have read this book several times and needless to say I love it more and more everytime I read it... I think it is a great book that helps kids cope with issues that have become so common in our world today. I will graduate from college next year to become a teacher and will read this book to my students and hope that they will enjoy it just as much as I did when my teacher read it to me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cold in Summer - an awesome read!
Tracy Barrett has created a wonderful, enthralling read for young adults and adults!I always try to pre-read fiction before giving it to my daughter, and found this book incredibly intriguing.Once I started it, I couldn't stop!I read into the night, woke early to read before breakfast, had it in the car in case I got stuck in traffic, and hid it on my desk under my work to finish it.Truly a "can't put it down" book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Cold in Summer by Tracy Barrett
In this book Tracy Barret has excellent writing that took me into a whole other world where I could see the characters and feel the surroundings.I deffinetly would recommend this book.At first one would think "Oh I already know this. Why read the rest?"I promise it gets good.It tells you May is a ghost but the suspense is thrilling and really rewarding at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 9year old daughter & I BOTH loved this book!
My daughter does NOT like to read. However, she does LOVE to dance! We bought the book with the doll. She didn't pick up the book until she had to do a report for school. I had already read the book one day, and encouraged her to read it for her report. She gave in, because she really had to choice but to read something for her report. Well, once she picked it up, she did not want to put it down!!! It was a book she could relate to, since she and the main character both love to dance. It even prompted her to look up Ballet Folklorico on the computer, since that is Marisol's favorite kind of dance. I only wish this was a series, like the other books from American Girl.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
This was not too good of a book . I thought it was very very boring . And the ending is terrible . But if really want to buy it I think the age range should be 8-11 . If you do buy this book I hope you have more fun reading it then I did .
4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant book for young girls
I am an adult who bought the new American Girl doll, Marisol.Since the book comes with the doll, I thought I'd read it just for fun.I thought it was a pleasant, well-written book.I think it would especially appeal to girls ages 8-12 who like to dance. But I think this is also a good book for any child who is forced to move from the home and neighborhood they love and is having a hard time adjusting.Marisol is a good kid (possibly unrealistically so) who handles her family's move without much whining or complaining to her parents. She soon learns that the move may not be all bad.The new neighborhood is definitely quieter, and right next door is a girl in her exact grade who also likes to dance. The only real worry is that there is no dance studio in her new town, Des Plaines, IL, and Marisol lives to dance. When Marisol meets her soon-to-be ex-upstairs neighbor's daughter, a dance teacher, she tries to convince her to move to Des Plaines to open a dance studio.Marisol is a very persistent girl who doesn't take 'no' for an answer.I like the fact that the book has many Spanish words sprinkled throughout, and there's a small glossary in the back so readers can look up those words. The book has a slightly educational feel to it, but kids won't even notice it.They'll just enjoy the story. ... Lissy moves from California to Oklahoma and finds herself in a social nightmare, facing two competing factions at school who vie for popularity in Jennifer Lynn Barnes's GOLDEN. But Lissy has something even more troublesome: Aura Vision, which is getting harder to hide as she sees beyond the average to get a sense of evil underlying the conflicts. 5-0 out of 5 stars A book any baseball fan should read!
Infield Hit is a great book for any baseball lover. Hal Stevenson is always compared to his father and doesn't like it. His father is a famous All-American 3rd baseman, who's well built and can kill the ball. Hal is built like his mom, very skinny and not very muscular. Hal has always tried to fill his father's shoes but cant. His arm isn't as strong as his dads but he is still put at 3rd base and since his dad was a hard hitter he swings a heavy bat. He can't throw the ball like his dad and is lucky to hit the ball with his heavy bat. Everything changes when he goes to a new school. A former all-star short stop also friends with Hal's dad is the coach and has a new plan for Hal. After watching him swing and miss many times he gives Hal a lighter bat. Hal is very quick and starts as a lead off hitter. The coach then moves him to second base and Hal does excellent because of his great handwork and since the throw is shorter he can get the ball to first for an out. When everything seems to go well something goes wrong. The best hitter on the team got moved from second to right field and decides to quit because he's played second for two years straight. Hal is the only one that can get him back. Read this amazing book to find out what happens and find out some other important details.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an inspiring book
This is an inspiring, action pack book. I loved it. I recommend this book to people who like base or to people who are thinking about trying out for baseball.4-0 out of 5 stars Good Baseball Book
This book is about a young boy named Hal Stevens. Hal tries to live up to his dad. Hal's dad is a superstar third baseman in the major leagues. His dads name is Ralph Stevens. Hal isnt as good as a player as his dad is but he still tries and tries to live up to his expectations. But Hal doesnt have his dads strength, build, and the powerhouse hit like his dad. Hal wanted to play third base like his dad but the coach wanted him at second base because he was to small to play third. I think Thomas J. Dygard does a great job describing the characters, describing the setting, and he also uses his wording great. I also think Dygard wrote this book as good as anyone could. I really liked this book. I think this book would help people because it helps them think that they dont need to do what other people expect them to do. I thought this was one of the best baseball books i have read so far and I think you should read this book and find out what happens to Hal in the story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely magical story
Great book for kids of 14 and under. Father and motherless son in NY city find their troubled way with help from a great community of eccentric people who show the boy the power of belief and hope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beekman's world
It's exceedingly painful to read a funny, intelligent, thoughtful book like, "Beekman's Big Deal", and know that in twomonths you probably won't be able to recall the plot.I was halfway through Michael de Guzman's excellent tale before I realized that though I was thoroughly enjoying myself and downing each consecutive chapter like popcorn, I was not retaining much in the process. This is not to fault Mr. de Guzman.Creating really well-written contemporary children's literature is an extraordinarily difficult task. And though I might harp on its transience, "Beekman" is a fine frolicsome novel.A book that takes seriously the problems that kids face when they're forced to move from place to place. This is a story with many problems, but with such likable narration that the reader is not necessarily going to notice these minute flaws.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart Divided
In A Heart Divided, by Cherie Bennett and Jeff Gottesfeld, Kate Pride tells the story of her experiences in Redford, Tennessee as a 16-year-old playwright from New Jersey. She shares how she met Jack Redford and eventually wrote a play with the hopes of reuniting the heart of the Redford community - divided over the meaning of the Confederate flag. She discovers who she really is and that "Purpose is: Who you touch. How you change the world. The good you leave behind."
4-0 out of 5 stars a heart divided
What does the confederate flag mean to you? Is it a sign of pride and justice, or a sign of racism and hate? What would you do if you were a person who came from a liberal democratic New Jersey family and had to move to a place where they proudly fly the rebel flag? Would you say "Oh this is there culture might as well get used to it." Or would you do as the main character did and join up with a local church group and fight for what you believe in and try to have it taken down? Would you try and see both sides of the flag and try and find out what is the true meaning of the flag? Read this story, it just may change your idea of the flag

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Endearing Addition to the YA Genre
Sixteen-year-old Kate Pride is outraged when her parents inform her that they are moving. Not only moving a few miles away, but hundreds of thousands of miles away, from their beloved hometown of New Jersey, to Redford, Tennessee. Kate is horrified at the thought of leaving her closest friends behind, as well as giving up the spot that she earned in a prestigious playwriting workshop. In Redford, racial tensions quickly arise, as Kate admits that she is a very northern teenager, in a very southern town. These differences prompt her to write a play. Her play is about the town's choices to fly the Confederate flag, and the opposition that the movement causes. However, when Jack Redford steps into the picture, a Romeo-and-Juliet type love affair begins. Suddenly Jack is trying to explain to his Mother why he doesn't want to attend the Citadel, even though it is a family tradition, and Kate joins various high school students in the attempt to get the school team's name changed to something other than the Rebels, and to get the town to stop flying their Confederate flag.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Patricia Polacco is the best!
Two weeks ago, I was introduced to Patricia Polacco and "The Graves Family" when the PSAJ at my Library in Chagrin Falls, Ohio came out of the Staff Room laughing. I asked her what made her so joy-filled and she showed me this book. Well, I read it and since then have read every other book in our Cuyahoga County Library System that Patricia has written. I have ordered the book for several friend's grandchildren as well as one of my own. Patricia is a wonderful, creative author and illustrator and simply a quality human being. At 67, I am still a kid at heart and right now, it is my pleasure to know about her, read her books and introduce her and her life work to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 5th grade class loved it
I read this book as a read aloud to my class and they couldn't get enough. They loved the illustrations and the story. Patricia Polacco is one of their favorite author and this book shows you why. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A really sweet story with funny characters...
When Mitchell announces that he is moving "two weeks away" from the home he's lived in for sixty years, his best buddy (and next door neighbor) Margo doesn't sit quietly by and let him slip away. The tale that ensues speaks volumes about the love of friendship and surprising solutions. If you find yourself reading the same stories over and over, you'll want to make sure this one is among the possibilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and Unique
Mitchell is moving is one of the best books I have ever read.Mitchell has lived next door to his friend for so long so he finally decides to move away, "three days away" to be exact.Margo, his friend, is notto happy about it so she tries to keep him from going.I recomend thisbook to all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the cutest stories I've ever read
Mitchell the dinosaur is tired of living in the same old place and decides to move "three days away".His best friend Margo isn't happy about that at all. She thinks of some very ingenious ways to try and keep Mitchell as her neighbor. The story stays cute and readable--no matter how many times I've read it over the years. ... Read more
