4-0 out of 5 stars TThe Star Fisher
The Star Fisher is an interesting book that always wants you to read more. This book is like one giant dream; it is fantasy with some truth. I wouldn't necessarily call this the best book in the world but I still recommend it to who ever is a fan of fantasy and adventure books. This is an easy reading book with exiting fun challenges and adventures.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Star Fisher - Book Review
"I thought I knew what green was until we went to West Virginia."That's how Star Fisher, by Laurence Yep, starts off.The book is about a Chinese - American family who moves from Ohio to West Virginia in the 1920' s.They start a laundry bussiness, and try to fit in.Joan Lee (the main character) finds new friends and finds a new relationship with her mother.4-0 out of 5 stars The Star Fisher
The one-sentence summary I found in the book is the following: "Fifteen-year-old Joan Lee and her family find the adjustment hard when they move from Ohio to West Virginia in the 1920's."Joan and her family are treated badly by most people, because of their race and also because they are new to that town. Then, Joan's mother bakes an apple pie for a church social. When the other town people find out how good the pie tastes, Mrs. Lee becomes modest and says that she had a good teacher, Miss. Lucy.Because of the apple pie, and Joan's friend's curiosity, the others accept the difference of the Lee's and they treat each other equally. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Big Move
Vicenza is having a hard time adjusting to life in San Francisco. She was unfairly torn from her well-off life and friend in Manila, Philippines, and forced to emigrate to California, where she now shops at the Salvation Army, works in her family's cafeteria in Sears on the weekends, and is ignored by the snooty girls at her new school. Her life gets so bad that she actually goes to the movies with her family on a Friday night. Finally, V, as her friends call her, befriends Isobel, the French exchange student, who helps V see that if the other girls don't want her, she doesn't want them, and also helps Vincenza snag the boy she wants. With excellently written characters and sprinkled with emails of her new "glamorous" (fictional) life to her friend back home in Manila, this book will be relatable for any girl who has ever felt out of place.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Rich to Poor
Vicenza's family moves to California from Manila, hoping to start a better life after a family friend embezzles all their money; but it gets a lot worse. At Vicenza's new school, Grosvernor High, she gets picked on for not wearing the newest fashion trends. Her only friend Isobel doesn't wear the newest fashions but styles of her own and still look hot in it. Vicenza's family television shoe video smuggling gets caught by the police, and is shut down. Now her family suffers with money and have to work extra hard at their cafeteria to earn more money. Once things calm down, Vicenza makes the top five slut list at Grosvernor School, as the number one slut after she is caught in the bathroom with Whitney's boyfriend Claude Caligari. Vicenza goes on her first date with Paul, a boy who works at Sears, after the aproval of her parents. They already knew him from their cafeteria, so they easily accepted the date. It was at the movies when Vicenza got her first kiss during the Stephen King Movie. I recommend this book for teens or adults who are fit for a wild narrative of a foreign teen.
3-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Off the Boat
Vicenza decides to lie in e-mails to her friend back in Manila named Peaches to impress her with details of her new life in America. Vicenza is a girl who came from Manila to America in hope to start a new life with the mother, father, and sister. When they get here they are forced to change and the go from high to low class in almost an instant. She pretends to have tons of friends and be popular when e-mailing her friend, although it is not true. She really only has one friend and no one really wants to talk to her. In the end, she ends up slowly telling Peaches the truth about her life and starts excepting the things that she has. This is a good book for people who like girly books because it was mainly about a teenage girls' life and how coming to America changes it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure and Suspence -By:CJA (Grade 5)
It was a simple ordinary day for Cass Kennedy when his family was forced to move to North Minnesota. He never wished to be alive. His new house was very nice. He really liked that it snowed there everyday, and he missed school a lot. Cass loved to visit Lake Superior often. Cass loved to play football near the lake. His house was close to a forest, and the forest was called Indian Deep. One day Cass went into the forest, and he heard strange sounds. He saw a boat's emergency lights on.What could he do with his dog in the middle of a blizzard, and he was the only one around to help the survivors? This book was an exciting and thrilling adventure. You should buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A boy experiences struggles and successes in his new home.
Cass Kennedy is used to the fast pace of Minneapolis. When his familymoves the North Shore of Lake Superior, many transitions ensue. He nolonger has the time he would like with his dad, all of his friends are faraway, and the class leader/bully, Ansel, picks on him but never getscaught.A shared love for a secret hideaway and a crisis bring the twoboys together.Cass and Ansel realize that they have more in common thanthey realized. This is a great story for children on the move.Thetransitions experienced are dealt with in a realistic manner. The boy'sfeelings of abandonment by his father and his subsequent hiding from hisfamily is typical of how many children retreat into themselves during timesof change and stress.Whether a read-a-loud or read-alone, this qualitybook is highly recommended for children 8-13, boys and girls alike.Thetimeless cycle of chaos, confusion, and lonliness during a move isrealistically depicted in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A glimpse into a young mind
What an excellent book for any young person! It is especially good for a young person experiencing divorce. As an adult child of divorce, I could relate to Richard's feelings about the break-up of his parents. And as a teacher, I can see how students could relate Richard's feelings about being at a new school, making new friends, etc.I especially loved the ending - it gave great closure to the story and left me with a strong message...finding your voice in writing (or just as a young person) can be so powerful.A great read for a child or adult!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Did We Have to Move Here?
William has moved during the school year and faces the many problems associated with unpacking and being the new boy in his class. He must deal with academic issues, classroom challenges, and rejection from his peers. Fortunately, William has many fond memories of success and friendship fromhis previous school, so he takes steps to make new friends. This is arealistic story that any child, who has experienced a move, will relate toeasily.William's need for acceptance is compelling and his tenacity isadmirable. This book should be part of every classroom library and sharedwith all new students. The illustrations continue to delight and surprisethe reader each time the book is read.

Davies has tackled an issue that many kids face intoday's mobile families, but this isn't just another concept book.Everything seems to be going wrong for William in his new home and school, until he finds the wonders that a little courage and humor will work. The master touches here lie in the illustration -- acknowledgments are buried in the artwork, and kids are sure to enjoy following the grouchy old lady as she is stumped by William's solution.Watch for the kid with big hair. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A real story about real people!
Pionner Summer is a "ready-for-chapters" book that really has it all.Pioneer Summer deals with emotional issues that children, regardless of the historical era, have in common.Eight-year-old Charlie is leaving his home and friends and making his way to a new home.At one time or another almost all children have dealt with a difficult transition period. Also, Charlie is dealing with the process of developing his personal belief system. His parents are committed abolitionists.Charlie must decide if he feels as strong about the issue of slavery. The other reason Pioneer Summer is an excellent book for the "ready-for-chapters" student is because the story brings to life an time in history that is rarely given adequate attention in history books.Pre-Civil War history often gets short exhanged in order to dedicate more textbook space to Westward Expansion and the battles of the Civil War.Pioneer Summer is a real story about the real people who settled the Kansas territory in hopes of influencing the vote on the issue of slavery. One last reason to love Pioneer Summer--it leaves many unanswered questions about Charlie and the Keller family that can only be answered by reading Cabin in the Snow and Our Kansas Home.It is a great way to introduce sequels to young readers. It left me wanting more and I teach history!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes history interesting for the young reader!
My 8-year-old son Sam is more of a non-fiction kind of guy--interested more in facts than in stories. But this one held his interest beautifully. It was a great history lesson for him and a great review for Mom and Dad!And, it was not too hard to read nor too easy, but just right. We got our first copy at the library, but I'll soon be purchasing all three in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great chapter book series!
My son loves the Prairie Skies series and can't wait for OUR KANSAS HOME.It's a warm family story but full of rich historical details that never overwhelm the plot.My son is in fifth grade but is a reluctant reader, so I'm always on the lookout for books that hold his interest but that aren't too babyish. Highly recommended! ... Read more
