5-0 out of 5 stars GreatHistorically-Accurate Prairie Adventure for Kids
This book shows the real west from a kids point of view. The good, the bad, and the ugly all mixed in with the sensitivity of an author who has roots in the area. I enjoyed the book tremendously and it revealed many new aspects of the prairie life that CLint Eastwood movies failed to mention. Its a refreshingly frank view of the real hardships on the prairie that gives me even more respect for the grit and determination of the early settlers. It was clearly well researched and fact based.More importantly, since its targeted to kids - I gave this book to my nieces and nephews as a Christmas gift. They couldn't put it down and were asking for 'the rest of the story' which Ms Seely provides in Last of the Roundup Boys.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Reasonable Good Book
This book was a good read, but there were also disappointments. Myself, living in Kansas, I felt the reader was some how putting Kansas down, from the boy's point of view. I suppose I don't really like what it was like back then, but, as a Kansas citizen, I am proud to live here in the vast prairies, and flat lands. To me, it seemed like Thomas' father only wanted him to come live with him, because he needed another farm hand around the place. In this short story, two young children also die. Thomas' half baby brother, from whooping cough, and a neighbor girl, who was only three, and got lost on the prairie. I guess in this day and age, we don't like to think about the bad things in life, and are not use to it when it comes to reading stories. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very simple story
This is not a classic...but a good, simple tale. Both the text and illustrations are pretty basic.A little girl is missing her best friend but finds a new one.My daughter (4) is reassured by it, after having her own best friend move away.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes, friends move away.
I don't know why books now have to be so big, with so many big illustrations...and so few words! But, with that said, this is a pretty book, with lots of simple illustrations...similar to Apple Farmer Annie (which I also reviewed). This book tells a story of a little girl who's best friend moves away. She recounts all the good times they had together. The story has a happy ending, showing there is life after a friend's departure. If your child has had a friend move away, this would be a great book to help him/her through that time.Lack of text gives the reader a chance to get the child involved in explaining what is going on on each page -- some pages have several small illustrations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A book of feelings
My class loved it.The class is well below reading level and despite the difficult words they were motivated to find out what happened next to Jaime. They had empathy for him being a new student unable to speak the language because at one point my students were there. The descriptions and characters were so real, yet their was this imagination piece which kept them going. It led to many discussions about feelings, new students, frustration, and confusion. This was the fastest book they read all year. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Joan Carris's Author "Review"
Hedgehogs in the Closet was written as the third book in the Howard boys' series of 4 books.(The first book is When The Boys Ran The House.)This book is Nick's book--his story of the year the Howard family lived inEngland and he had to wear purple (ugh!) sweaters to school, do PoetryClass twice a week, and Drama Class ditto. But Nick also discoveredRugby--and he was good at that rough, tough sport. He found hilariousdifferences between the English that the English people speak and thelanguage we Americans use.He even learned to eat "Toad in theHole."And of course, he and his brothers kept real, live hedgehogshidden in their closets.Well, they did until a problem arose....Forme as the author, and for me as a presenter of this book in schools, it hasbeen a happy experience.I hope you'll try it! Cheers!JoanCarris ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, educational, & captivating for all ages!
It was a rare moment with my daughter, nestled under the covers. "Praire Dog Pioneers" was not a mere story--it was an adventure that soothed us after a full day.It was so relaxing and interesting. My daughter, a five year old, was truly delighted with the characters and tale.We went back through time to join a family relocating. My daughter immediately identified with the youngest character, and was so caught up with her character and feelings, that she rooted for her all along. In quite a natural way, this book emphasizes the importance of integrity, acceptance, love, and family values. It also deals with some realities we all face.It is educational, colorful, historical, and positively inspiring. The text and illustrations are both truly a work of Art.The story encouraged us to sing a folk song together afterwards, which was the perfect bond for parent and child right before bedtime. This is a must for every family! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GOOD BOOK!!!!
I AM ONLY ON PAGE 100 AND ALREADY I LOVE THIS BOOK. I LOVED IT FROM THE FIRST WORD THE END IS EXCITING! [I ALWAYS SPOIL IT BY READING THE END FIRST BUT I WILL NOT TELL YOU ABOUT IT!] I AM 25 AND THE GIRL IN THE BOOK IS THIRTEEN SO I COULD TELL THIS IS FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE BUT I STILL LIKE IT COME AND READ THIS BOOK... IT TAKES YOU FOR A RIDE AND A RIDE OF MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE IT IS SO IF YOU LIKE MYSTERYS AS WELL AS SUPER NATURAL STUFF LIKE I DO COME READ THIS! I JUST WANTED THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK TO KNOW THAT SHE DID AN AWESOME JOB!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I was fourteen when I read this book. I am now 22, and the impression that this book left with me is still fresh. I would not advise someone under the age of tweleve to read this book. It's a seamlessly weaved tale where the heroine, Miranada, is well prepared by the recent events in her life to take on this mystery. Even so, it is an intense mystery. Although it is a "children's" book, Dorthy's murder is awful. It is necessary to explain why her character is not at rest, but it leaves a haunting impression with the reader long after the book is over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to Believe This is a Young Adult Novel!
I happen to like all sorts of books--children's books, young adults, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, even the classics!A well-written book appeals to all ages.Look at the HARRY POTTER phenomena...................I for one admit to being passionate about those fabulous books and I am far removed from a young adult (middle aged if you must know).

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well written novel that illustrates today' Hawaii
I reside in Hawaii and happened to read this book. My boyfriend and I finished reading this book in one day! It's a page-turner that shows many aspects of today's Hawaii. The story includes not only Kate's struggle to identify her heritage as a half-Hawaiian born and raised in California, but also tells the sovereign history that was overthrown, the multi-ethnicity complex society, the true meaning of Hula dance, and the traditional Hawaiian family value etc. The author reveals the essence of the cultural and political issues in Hawaii in a very sophisticated manner yet simple. This book is a great reading for any youth but I also recommend for adults who are interested in Hawaii. This can be a very informative book for multicultural education as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Resonates with the importance of learning about oneself
Dance For The Aina by Clemence McLaren is an engaging novel about Kate Kahele, a 12 year old girl who feels out of place in Hawaii, and longs to be in California again even though her lawyer father and surfer brother are eager to experience their new home state. Kate's personal story of coming to understand and truly experience her Hawaiian heritage is a journey of exploration that resonates with the importance of learning about oneself and one's roots. Dance For The Aina is very highly recommended reading and a welcome addition to school and community library collections. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ophie Out of Oz
"Ophie" is a funny book about Ophie Peeler and her journeys through friendship. When moving to a new town, she finds herself stuck with a girl called Britney instead of the TV girls, who are popular and star in TV commercials. When one day she finds out that a present from her dad will make the TV girls talk to her, she breaks off her friendship with Britney to be popular. Finally she realizes what a true friend is- someone who likes you as you are (Britney), not someone who likes you for your belongings.
5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book! Brittany is hilarious!Ophie is amazing.
If you liked Judy Blume's book, Otherwise Known As Shiela the Great, you will love Ophie Out of Oz! Ophie's Secret Self is Dorthy of Oz no matter where she goes, and she is such a fun, unique character. She wears Ruby Slippers just like Dorothy, and I would follow her anywhere! I love her excited approach to life, like when the teacher gives them an assignment to write a poem about the seasons, and instead of writing some dull poem about snow or falling leaves, Ophie writes a poem about a boa constrictor squeezing somebody to death called Amazon Winter!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Again Mom is right on the money!
Moving Again Mom is just what I needed to assure my youngest daughter that she is not alone. It is a wonderful story that focuses on moving as a positive experience. She is having a ball using her best friend pen that we made to mimic the one in the book to keep in touch with her best friend Kelly.
5-0 out of 5 stars A picturebook story of a family who must relocate
The second book in the brand new Uncle Sam's Kids series, Moving Again Mom is the picturebook story of a family who must relocate. The youngest child is sad because she will miss her best friend. Learning to make the best of life's hardships, and cultivating one's inner strength in forging lasting connections, is a theme brought through the narrative text and inviting color illustrations. Highly recommended reading, especially for families who need to acclimate young children to the unfortunate reality of having to move.
