4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book My 11 year old loved it !
This was a great book . It was on my son's 6th grade SUMMER READING LIST. I usually read anything he has to read so I know what he is reading and so we can discuss it. He loved this book as did I . It is sometimes difficult to get him to read but with this book it was easy. I will warn you it has adult themes , murder, revenge and prejudice. The character though are very real and handle these issues with honor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weasel
I think this was a really good book. Two kids were at home and their father had been missing for 6 days. Then a guy came to their door with their mothers lochet......I can't wait to read bringing back Esra

1-0 out of 5 stars A Bad Choice...
This book is just plain boring. There is no role models that children can look up to. Very repetitive, which makes it a boring book. This book is not fit for a 12 year old kid, more like a 8 year old. Doesent expand vocabulary with new words or increase any knowledge except for the fact that a man went a killed indians, and other people for no good reason. Just becaus ehe was insane. Dont read this book if you have any good taste for books, cause i fell asleep twice while reading this book. i would not reccomend this book to basically anyone. ... Read more

If you didn't get this already he is a slave, and if he is caught there consciences. He also jumps of a ship so he can swim to a near by dock New York.In hope to free his mother and him self with his fathers soldiers notes, because Daniel's father had drown at sea when Daniel was really little. While doing this what he didn't know was his master had docked and was looking for him. So, as you can see Daniel has a crisis on his hands.

3-0 out of 5 stars My words, my opinion
Jump Ship to Freedom by James and Christopher Collier. It is about a 14 year old boy named Daniel Arabus. He is an African American slave from Connecticut that has just found out that he and his mother are being sold to the West Indies by Captain Ivers their owner. he is a really grumpy and bad man. Daniel finds out that he has some soldier's notes that can free him and his mother from SLAVERY for forever. Along the way, he travels with a Quaker. And he Really needs a doctor. He stops at a tavern (when he escapes) when he sees that Captain Ivers is looking for him. Will he ever find FREEDOM??????????

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, colorful detail
I love reading this to my 3-year old daughter. The pictures are so colorful and full of detail.
4-0 out of 5 stars I want to fly like an eagle, to the sea
It's hard to resist the charms of a picture book filled to brimming with tiny fabulous details in a vast cityscape. It's probably one of the reasons I love books like, "Who Needs Donuts?" by Mark Stamaty or James Warhola's, "Uncle Andy's" so much.Usually books of this nature are very precise. They hide delicate little intricacies on each and every page, just waiting for the viewer to find them.Yet I've never read a picture book that contains such remarkably colorful embellishments as I have in Arthur Dorros' 1991 treasure, "Abuela". Taking a standard fantasy of wishing to fly, author Dorros and illustrator Elisa Kleven have given us a remarkable journey above a world too complex to capture in a single book.To read this book is to experience something beautiful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!
This is a wonderful book for kids and adults, alike. It's a very loving and imaginative story paired with breath-taking illustrations. They colors are gorgeous and there are endless tiny details to point out in the pictures.

We love this book! Not only was the book thoughtfully written, the painting were beautiful, and the characters in this books were so cute.We really appreciate the CD that accompanies the book. The music that comes with the book makes reading it a joy, and a fun expereince for the children. We learn a lot about China through this book, thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fact filled book & beautiful CD
You and your child will be guided throught this amazing book with Ming & Kim who are also dressed in costumes of minority tribes through out the Peoples' Republic of China. This is how the book breaks down. Each page also has it's very own music track. The music is absolutely beautiful and is unlike any Chinese music cd that we own! The more we listen to this cd we really love it! My daughter actually requests to hear certain songs, our favorite has sounds like running horses!
5-0 out of 5 stars great music and drawings!
This book has great colorful pictures for kids and is written in a way that kids will find it interesting. It's hard to cram so many years of Chinese history into a short children's book but the author has done a good job of hitting the interesting high points. The accompanying CD has some wonderful original compositions. This is a welcome addition to the library of children's books on China.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story
I really enjoyed this version of Cinderella, I also liked how Climo included a little behind the scenes of the folktale on the back pages. I'm not the biggest fan of the illustrations however, I liked the patterns that were worked onto the pages, but the faces of the characters were sort of weird and disturbing at times, I wasn't drawn into the Pear Blossom's beauty they way I would have liked to have been (as was described in Climo's words)

3-0 out of 5 stars Korean Cinderella
The book is about a girl name Pear blossom. After her mothers death, her fater remarried a woman who had another child with another man. Pear blossom's step-sister, Peony is ugly compared to Pear blossom. Peony's mother is jealous of Pear blossom's beauty so she makes Pear blossom do every single chore in the house. One day, The magistrate see's Pear Blossom one day but when he called her, she just ran away with one shoe. The magistrate takes the shoe and goes around trying to find the owner of the shoe. I thought this book is kind of boring because it is very similar to the other cinderella books. This book is no different then the other cinderella books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Cinderella
There are as many as a half dozen versions of Cinderella in Korea. The Korean Cinderella by Shirley Climo is a combination of three Korean variations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Far North
Gabe Rogers and Raymond Province must depend on each other for their very survival. As much as they despise the idea they must rely on each other to live another day. Will the harsh weather defeat them? Or will the wildlife devour them first? Read Far North by Will Hobbs to find out. I would recommend this book to all thrill/ adventure readers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Story
I'm an avid reader, and I like survival stories a lot. Far North is a good example of one! The writer really creates the feel and emotions of the different stages that Gabe and Raymond, two high school students in the wilds of Canada's Northwestern Territories, go through in their epic journey for survival. Compared to similar stories (like Gary's Paulsen's books) Far North is somewhat predictable but has just enough twists and turns in the plot to make it interesting. The only reason I rated it 4 stars was because I expected MORE action (it did have some) and I could predict a few parts. Other than that, it was pretty good! If you're just looking for a book to read, I would recommend giving this one a shot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Far North is wonderful!
Far North was an excellent book! It shows the spirit of true survival. I really enjoyed this book because it was exciting and was full of action. Also, it was so detailed that I could picture what was going on. The author of this story made it seem so real that I could feel the emotions of the characters and felt that I was actually there. One part that actually really got to me is when Johnny Raven died, I really felt as if I was there.Far North was a very well written story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A man ain't nothing but a man
The story of John Henry fleshed out and made magical at the same time. The paintings are evocative watercolors, beautifully done. The language is an interesting mixture of puns and idioms. The story of John Henry is so compelling to my little boy that he resists reading the part where John dies because he just can't stand it. We have to skip over to the page where it explains that you can still hear the hammers ringing out if you listen in the night out front of the White House. He likes that. Odd and mystical. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tall, Tall, Tale!
This wild and wonderful retelling of the classic John Henry folk tale will not disappoint any reader. From the moment John Henry is born and all the animals come to see, excitement and splendor beg the reader on. John Henry is a man of indomitable spirit. He works hard and large at whatever he sets his hand to. We are left with a feeling of 'can do' by the example of this mighty legend.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jazmin's Life in New York
Jazmin is a fourteen year old African American girl living in New York in the 1960's whose father was killed in a car crash.Jazmin's mother became an alcoholic and couldn't raise Jazmin.Jazmin had to live with relatives or in foster homes her whole life. She moved from place to place and never lived in the same place for longer than one year. She wrote in a notebook to keep track of where she had lived and who she had met.She loved to write and dreamed about becoming a writer despite her past.
4-0 out of 5 stars Jackie's Great Book Review
Do you have something that you love very much? All she spends her time writing in her journal and writing poems about her week and when she was born and what happened when she was growing up. In one part she wrote a poem aboutaDay dreaming Yesterday I visited my favorite spot at macombspart three blocks away. I crept as far down the bank as my leather loafers would let me without slipping then I pulled up a slah of rock and beside the Harlem River. I think this was a good book and I think other people would enjoy reading this. This helped me think about what it would be like if you had know friends or family that would care for you except your aunt. This book shows a lot of courage and strength being without you family there by your side

3-0 out of 5 stars A poignant and tenderly rendered story of growing up
As 14-year-old Jazmin Shelby sits on the stoop of her brownstone in 1960s Harlem, she can see the world pass her by, and she's not terribly impressed with the things she observes. Her community is plagued with hustlers, drug dealers, vagrants, and people who have lost touch with any type of reality outside of city life.Family life for Jazmin is not much better. Her mother is consumed by the demons of alcohol and is often "missing in action," going in and out of hospitals on all too frequent basis.Meanwhile, her father, whom she loved dearly, died recently in a car accident.Passed around from one place to another, Jazmin finally ends up with her older sister CeCe, and they both struggle to survive on their own. While the world around her appears bleak and full of despair, Jazmin does find solace in writing, and it is within the pages or her notebook that she fights to dream and laugh at the craziness that surrounds her.She keeps her sanity by ruminating on her frustrations about family, school, and the neighborhood she calls home. There is also hope, for Jazmin's notebook is also a place where she can safely tuck in the dreams she has for a better life.Spanning less than a year, Jazmin's story unfolds in chronological order and offers readers a realistic story of a young black girl who fervently attempts to cling onto dreams in the face of adversity. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great, if you have a piano and can read music...
A great book with lyrics in Spanish and English and wonderful illustrations. However, a CD to go along with the book would be much better than the sheet music included....

5-0 out of 5 stars Diez Deditos
The author, Jose Luis Orozco, is a bilingual educator/singer who keeps English-speaking and Spanish-speaking children interested throughout his books and accompanying music. As a substitute teacher, I have used his books and tapes extensively in elementary school classes over the years. I have had the privilege of attending his concerts at elementary schools several times and have thoroughly enjoyed his work.5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Spanish starter
I bought this book & the accompanying CD. To be honest, I don't use the book to sing along with the CD as much as I thought I would. But...when I do, it is great. There are wonderful, colorful pictures, English & Spanish words to every song, and an explanation of the origin/tradition of the song. Lots of fun, I hope my 15 month old is absorbing some of it. ... I liked the book alot. Especially when papa came home and started bickering to Mr Anderson.

4-0 out of 5 stars A verynice short story
This was a very short story set in the depression time. It had a sad ending, though it was happy in a way too....but the trees wouldn't sing anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Because of Winn-Dixie review
I thought that this was a really good book. It was kinda sad and happy at the same time. I thought that it was sad because I felt kinda bad for Opal, the main character of the book, because I could never imagine not having a mother. At the same time I felt happy for her because she had found friends in the end and of course Winn-Dixe in the beginning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
I have not run into many children who have felt this way in my short career as an ESOL teacher but students similar to Mei Mei are out there. This book is very helpful to teachers with ESOL students in their classroom who are not trained in TESOL practices.Students often go through a silent period where they are listening to the language and just taking English in before they begin speaking it.The story of Mei Mei gives an indication what may be going on in their minds at the time.5-0 out of 5 stars Great for use with any second language learner
I teach English as a Second Language to Spanish-speaking elementary students. We begin the year by reading this book and discussing how the students feel about learning English. We often refer back to the bookthroughout the year as we identify our own stages of language acquisition. This book is very realistic and motivational.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love It !!!
I dont know why (some) people were offended.
5-0 out of 5 stars Naps galore
There's nothing like reading a good controversial book before beddy-bye.I decided to check out the infamous "Nappy Hair", once considered so damaging by so few (and yet so vocal). So I flipped through it.Then I read it once. Then I read it twice. Then I tried turning it upside down and reading it from back to front because I just couldn't see how anyone could raise a ruckus over such a great little old story. The fact of the matter is, ladies and gentlemen, that this is a great book.A fun to read tale of accepting one's own self despite physical aspects that some members of society might not approve of.In short, having nappy hair.5-0 out of 5 stars happy, lighthearted kids book celebrating nappy hair...
great book for kids... helps lil girls with nappy-textured hair learn to love and appreciate their hair. typically the way the hair is described and talked about in the book would be negative and derogatory. it sounds like nappy hair is being called out and laughed at as if it's a bad thing and that is historically typical in the afro community in america (or any other afro community exposed to american culture and thinking)... but somehow this story makes nappy hair seem fun and special. in the end uncle mordecai says that God made Brenda's hair special saying how there is no other PERFECT CIRCLE in nature! Brenda's supposed "flaw" becomes something unique and specially crafted by God in His will. I read to my daughter nightly and this is a favorite for her... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Divine is Simply Irresistible!!!!!!!!!!!!
Simply Divine is Simply Irresistible. Ms Jackie, has done it again! I finished this book in 2 days because I could not put it down. Divine, is a rich 14 year old "divine" diva that learns that their is more to life than designer clothes, big houses, and trips to the mall when she is sent to live with her uncle and family who lives a modest life style when her famous mother is sent to rehab and her famous father is imprisoned. Divine soon learns that their is more to life that material things like Family, Love, Forgiveness, and God. This story is a good read for any age group, teenagers and adults alike. I am 28 years old and I will say thatI really honestly enjoyed this book and I just can't wait for the follow up. It was just warm and enduring and just plain GOOD!. Ms. Jackie just proved what a damn good author she is, it's not a lot of authors that can write books that appeal to both teens and adults. Go Ms. Jackie GO!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I loved the adventures of Weetamoo, and I wanted to read more even though the book was done!

3-0 out of 5 stars Weetamoo
Weetamoo is the inspiring story of a young Native American girl who strives to become a woman and for patience. The beginning starts out kind of slow, and it's hard to get into. But if you keep reading then you really get into it. It was interesting to see the way she changed throughout the diary. It was also interesting to find out the way the authour took a real historical character and turned her into a fictional one. Her true life story is really tragic, and so is the end of the book. It depends on your age weather I'd recommend it or not. It can be a little childish and too easy to read at times. Other than that, it's a great story!

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but lacks solid information.
"Weetamoo: Heart of the Pocassets, Massachusetts, 1653" took me by surprise, since I did not know about this woman, and because she did not know how to read or write. This last fact made it harder for me to let myself into her world, knowing that the things in her diary may not have happened that way, much less at all.If you set this historical bungle aside, then the story is quite interesting, but slow-going.I really wanted to know more about the "Coat-men" (the English settlers) according to Weetamoo, and I felt the ending was very hasty.Much research and time went into this book, and I give credit to author Patricia Clark Smith for undertaking such a task, and I blame myself for not truly appreciating it, since I was caught up in the accuracy or their lack of it.Since not much is known about Weetamoo, I had trouble seeing her through this diary, and after a while, I had to resign myself to thinking that this diary belonged to an ordinary Native American girl.If you can look past the lack of information about Weetamoo, then this could be an enjoyable book.I "sorta" recommend. ... Not just a book for young people. this is a great, inspirational read. i have all of miss guy's books that pertain to the friends. read this book, and read 'edith jackson' and 'ruby' too! you will love them!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Totally Agree...
I agree w/ the last commentator below. This was one of the best books I ever read as a teen. I was in H.S. and my 10th grade teacher wanted our class to buy and read the book and be prepared to answer any questions she had at the time. She would assign certain chapters for us to read for homework. Well, the book was sooo good that I did not follow her lesson plan and read the entire book on my own. If anyone wants a good book, that you cannot put down and a novel that's a continuous page turner, then buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars After all these years...
I am in my junior year of college, and in class the other day my professor asked us to try and recall a book from elementary school that we remember explicitly because it was just that good, and this book was mine. I read it when I was in fifth grade, and I read it over and over; I remember that I was one of the best books that I had ever read and when he asked without hesitation it came into my mind. So, im buying it now just to have it as a memento of one of the best books I've read. ... Read more

Although we have not finished this book, my son is hooked. He didnt' want me to stop reading after the first chapter. It's a great book for homeschooling, the reason we are using it, and the chapters are quick and easy to get through. Very nice art work too.
