5-0 out of 5 stars From Granny to future reader
Ok, I loved this book, and I'm well into my 50's.It's a charming adventure and I'm eagerly awaiting a sequel. This is one I'm saving for my [...] grandson who I hope will love it as much as I did!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Magical Quest
A young man named Finn, along with four other young teens, have been chosen to serve as digital hosts at the Magic Kingdom. In return for letting their images be used, each of the kids receives scholarships that will pay for their college.Unfortunately, there's evil afoot in the Land That Walt Disney built. The Imagineers behind the digital host program know there are beings they call the Overtakers who are subverting the Magic Kingdom and causing Bad Things to happen.Finn and his friends have been given the unique ability to actually become part human/part digital and travel through the Magic Kingdom. In this form, they can see the mysterious Overtakers. The down side is that they can also be hurt by their enemies.Wayne, one of the Imagineers, tells Finn and his friends that they were specially chosen to be part of the quest to find the answer to a puzzle left by Walt Disney.Once they find the treasure, they should be able to defeat the evil Overtakers once and for all.Of course, it's not that simple and many adventures lie ahead.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book
This book is probably the best book I've ever read. I've been to Disney World and I'm obsessed with the place. It is even more fun to read if you've been there because you can follow along with where they are in the story. The story was full of suspense and the characters were good. I really enjoyed it and could not put it down. I really hope that Ridley Pearson will write a sequel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaya:An American Girl
I started reading the Kaya books to my 6 year old daughter a few months ago, and she loves them.I like how the author takes the reader into the world of Native American culture in a way that is interesting to adults and children. My daughter practices saying the Nez Perce words, which are so conviently located in the glossary in the back of the book. It's helped to open up her world to other cultures right here in our own country.Kaya is a brave girl with anxieties who loves her family;not all that different from our own American girls of today!I highly recommend these books for mothers and daughters to read together when they're young, then have them read them again later on their own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kaya Boxed Set
I have this set. It is enjoyable because you don't have to take the books out from a libray. I took the first book out and I also took out the third( the second was taken out). Its nice to have a boxed set so you know where they all are. The books---I enjoyed them alot. But the only thing is that some of the books(like book 1) I didn't enjoy as much as the others. I give this boxed set a high 4 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Books
Last Christmas, just after she turned 5, my daughter received the present she wanted most--the complete set of Kaya books, her first experience of the American Girls. We began reading them together right away, and she loved them. While the reading level is higher than most of the American Girls books, she had few problems with comprehension as I read the text aloud. She began using many of the Nez Perce words she learned from the story--for some time, her daddy became "Toe-Ta" and I was "Eetsa." Another reviewer complained about the Native American religious beliefs scattered about the text. I found these to be in context for the character (after all, what would one expect given the culture and the time?), and when our faith differs from what is written in the book, it made for some good discussion. Kaya is a character who comes across as real--she makes mistakes, she has doubts, frustrations, and fears. What makes her a great character is that she learns from her mistakes and meets her fears head on with courage. Katie and I look forward to reading more American Girls books together over the years. Our introduction to them has made us eager for more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Children's Books Ever Made
On one level, it's a Cinderella story in a different setting. But it's more than that.On a little deeper level, it's a story about true beauty being inside, but it's more than that. The book seems to have so many layers of meaning depending on how you look at it, all in what seems at first like a simple picture book.Confidence, ties to the Earth, insight into others, and more.I've read this book to my sons and daughters more than any other, and never tire of it.I hope they don't either, and more, I hope they come to understand the richness of the kind of lives lived by the rough face girl, and her sister-in-law to be, and husband to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Rough-Faced Girl
This is a story about a girl who is not beautiful on her outside, but is beautiful on her inside. The story takes place on the shores of Lake Ontario. She and her hard-hearted sisters are three of many women who want to marry an invisible being. But only someone who can see him, can marry him. The lesson is on the importance of having a good heart more than beautiful clothes or looks. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Native American culture and people who need to learn the importance of having a good heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magnificiant Story of an Indian Girl!
The Rough Face Girl is a beutiful book.It had alot of description and many morals hidden in the words of the book. The young girl was despised by everyone in her village but she always stayed true to herself and others and she ended up with the best person that every girl wanted to marry.I learned that true beauty comes from inside and if you are honest then good things will happen to you.I also learned to be yourself because sooner or later people will start to accept who you are.And I learned to remember that there is always room for improvment. So in conclusion, I feel that this story can be enjoyed by young and old people! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Whoever you are (Reading Rainbow Book)
It is a good start on introducing children to other cultures and helping them to understand the similiararities, but it generalizes a bit..some of the people look like stereotypes

4-0 out of 5 stars All the world's children have the same wants and needs
I am a Lutheran church librarian and I am glad I bought this very satisfactory book for our church library. Its text stresses that children are the same the world over. They have the same feelings and needs, and have the same hopes and dreams. The illustrations are a nice change from the usual. Each page is surrounded by a gold picture frame in which faux jewels are embedded. The illustrations appear to be tempera or opaque watercolor, drawn in Persian style. The colors are very saturated. The book's cover gives you an idea of what they look like. The message of this book is one of diversity--that even though children live in different parts of the world and may have different nationalities, races, ethnicities, languages or faiths, they still have the same hopes, dreams and daily needs. This is a very important message for children to hear in today's world where there is so much suspicion of those we "perceive" to be different. The more children realize that kids are the same everywhere, the more tolerant they will be.Children pick up prejudice by the time they are three years of age, say researchers, so you have to nip it in the bud very early, and this book does that in a wonderful way.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL Book!
This book is a big hit with my PRE-K class! I was pleasantly surprised at how responsive and attentive they were while I was reading this. They have memorized most of the book. They all loved it! An excellent resource for teaching about diversity and various cultures! I'd definitely recommend reading this book to/with ages four through maybe second grade. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Big Mama's House

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm oportunity to reflect on special people and places.
Donald Crews departs from his usual simple text about such things as trucks and boats to share his childhood memories. The bold and colorful illustrations we usually find in his work are replaced by soft gentle colors and lines. Perhaps my endearment to this book stems from my own fond memories of riding the train back to my grandmother's home in Davenport, Iowa. Yet, there is more to this story than shared memories of days gone by. Even young children have memories of warm moments with someone special. As a first grade teacher I share this book with my students. It is a delight to see the special smiles that illuminate their faces, like the sweet smell of Spring, when they think of their special someone. For some children they think, like Crews, of grandma and her special cooking, for others their thoughts are of a visit to mom in a distant state. There thoughts are not meloncholy, like Crews, they are pleasant reminders of the treasures we find in each other. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a favorite of mine, but a good story to read
I enjoyed this book. There were a few parts that were confusing and I had to go back and reread the chapter. This book did include historical information. The author detailed the Reconstruction period. This story was very suspenseful.I kept expecting something really bad to happen. There was sadness, but no great devastation along the way.I am not too sure that students in 6th-8th grade would enjoy reading this book.I would recommend this book to high school aged students.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent story
The event in this story happened in the early of the reconstruction period of South America. It was about Pascal, 12-year-old a young black slave, and his family reaching for their own land. Gideon,Pascal's brother who had left a plantation of a white master which he used to live with Pascal, came back to invite his youngerbrotherand his orphaned friend Nelly to escape there with him. They were motivated to have their own land by a promise of "forty acres and maybe a mule" from the Bureau of Refugees. Along the way, hey searched for other friends to create a new family friends. Finally, they pick up an older man calling himself Mr. Freedman, and his granddaughter, Gladness t. Pascal and his new family have imagine any of it could ever come true. After a long, hard journey, they find most exciting of all, a promise to give the land. They got the land forty acres in Georgia, and planed many plants. However, their great dream no longer stayed, when its nearly harvest time, a government said that slaves must gave back their land.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reconstrutionist tale
Through the eyes of Pascal, a young black slave, we perceive the beginnings of the Reconstruction period of the South. Motivated by a promise of"forty acres and maybe a mule" by Circular 13 from the Bureau of Refugees, Pascal's brother Gideon enlightens his family and friends of the Emancipation Proclamation and convinces his younger brother to leave the plantation with him.Along the way, they search for other missing members of their family, make new friends, and find enemies.Joy builds as their farm comes together a piece at a time.Just when its nearly harvest time, a ruling that says slaves must give back their land comes out. Will the City family lose everything they have gained?Read more

What did Navajo Indians do in World War 2?The title of my book is Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac. The main character is Kii Yazhi. He is forced to go to boarding school. From boarding school he heads off to war.
5-0 out of 5 stars code talker review
my son asked me to pick out a relatively short book from the library for his 8th grade book report.Code talker was it.After he raved about it, and spoke of some specifics, i read it myself before returning to the library. It is a beautifully told tale that intertwines the 'simple' english translation of a navajo language filled with spirituality, respect, honor, and a mythological belief in how things came to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Code Talkers
Code Talkers is a fantastic book. The author Joseph Bruchac really knows how to write a good book. When the main charector was growing up he was told he would be nothing. When he got out of boarding school he was on his way to being a big succes.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 7 year old loves this book
This story is set in 1864 during the Civil War.The book prompted discussions about race, slavery, the Civil War and life during that time, prejudice behavior, the privledges we take for granted and inner strength. We first read about slavery in Kaya, which my daughter also loved. My daughter talks about the characters (Addy, Kaya, Samantha and others) as though they are part of our extended family. She has set a goal to read all of the American Girl books and is well on her way there.

4-0 out of 5 stars America
Candace Fleming goes out on a limb to tell the story of Lowji a young boy who moved with his mother and father from India to a small midwestern town in the United States of America. This story is charming, light-hearted, and well written. Lowji is an endearing character that comes to understand his new home. He is challenged by cultural misunderstandings and learning the funny expressions that English speakers of the United States often take for granted. In a very innocent way Lowji makes the adjustments to life in the USA. He makes new friends and settles into a new home. The acculturation experience is one that many new Americans may endure. Fleming handles the situation with clever conscience without vilifying either Lowji's family or the townspeople. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Internment from a child's point of view
This was interesting to me since my mother was about Yuki's age when she went to "camp".My mother doesn't talk much about that time, maybe because some things you just want to forget. It helped me understand some of the fear and prejudice towards Japanese Americans during the war.I have mixed feelings about the internment. It was horrible how so many people lost their livelihoods, but on the other hand, in camp, they were sheltered from the hatred and hostility they may have experienced at home. This was wartime, so everyone was feeling some kind of unhappiness.I give this book 4 stars and 5 stars to Uchida's "Journey Home", the story which follows Yuki's family out of camp.

4-0 out of 5 stars My Review
Yuki Sakane is a Japanese-American girl, who lives a normal life in Berkeley, California. In her school, kids make fun of her for being Japanese. They also call her "Jap" which is insulting for Japanese.
4-0 out of 5 stars Yuki's Adventure
Yuki and all the other Japanese living in California have to evacuate after the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. Yuki and her family have to leave their pets, friends, and furniture behind and head to a camp in Topaz, Utah. People have to live in horse stalls and share bathrooms with people, but Yuki manages to be optimistic about it. Yuki gets a new friend named Emi and they always pal around together until Emi has an unfortunate illness. It is sad at parts when Yuki loses a loved one, but it has a happy ending. I liked this book because it taught me a lot about Japanese concentration camps in the 1940's and I thought the characters were very likeable and unique. This is a good book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the Japanese concentration camps. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for reading aloud
Deborah Hopkinson's use of dialogue in this story is what really recommends it to be read aloud. The characters come through the story so well through their words. They usually don't come right out and SAY anything, but instead communicate vital information in a round-about sort of way. They pretend not to have a care in the world, all the while desperately plotting against their captors.
3-0 out of 5 stars Perpetuating a Myth
While Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt is a wonderful work of fiction, it should be considered just that.
4-0 out of 5 stars Keep believeing

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I am continually amazed at how children's books offer detail and insight into daily life that no stout history book can provide. 5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK!
Another great book by Kate Waters. This book shows the daily life of a Native American child during the time of the Pilgrims. This book goes great with Sarah Morton's Day and Samuel Eaton's Day.Also, check out On the Mayflower also by Kate Waters.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book !
We are big fans of Kate Waters' books about the Pilgrims (Samuel Eaton's Day, Sarah Morton's Day and On the Mayflower). When we discovered"Tapenum's Day", we were thrilled !I found the 'point of view'from a young Native American boy to be both fascinating and educational, asdid my children. We enjoyed seeing this historically accuate slice of life, written from a balanced perspective. I think this wonderful book rounds outthe collection, including the other four, that no study of the Pilgrimsshould be without. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars finally, a book my one year old and I both enjoy
I love Keats' beautiful collage-style illustrations. As an urban apartment dweller, I also appreciate a book that shows children living in cities and in apartments. The stereotypical "house" that appears in most children's books looks nothing like the home my daughter knows.
4-0 out of 5 stars Whistle for Willie
This book is for the primary grades.I'm using as part of Black History curriculum.

4-0 out of 5 stars An especially great book for a city kid
My 1-year old daughter really responds to this board book. She loves the dog, and I think she relates to the colorful simplicity of the illustrations. I appreciate the story, and that it takes place in a city, which will be nice for her as she grows old enough to understand that. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars almost identical!
I actually really wanted this set because the covers were so much better than the english versions, and I was unhappy that the cover was different and has a huge circle on it saying "now a major motion film!" The quality of the translation is great though, and even the pictures are the same as the set I have. I would recommend this book as a spanish translation!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great story but really sad
I read this book in school and I enjoyed it. It had a lot of good history in it and I think it's important that people know the horrible things which were done to Native Americans. This story is beautiful and touching but if you are a sensitive reader I suggest keeping a box of tissues nearby because parts of it are really sad. The writer creates a strong bond between Ishi and the reader and at times it was as if I was feeling his pain. Though it's an emotional story, I really think it's powerful and worth a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars College Bound required reading
I was required to read this book when I took a freshman Anthropology Class many years ago.It is an eye-opening story about human struggle and love of life.Any student planning to attend college should read this book and understand what real difficulty has already been faced.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Moving!
This historical and soulful account of America's last "Wild Indian" is a great adventure, filled with insights and lessons about compassion. It reminds me of my favorite Native American book, Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears. ... Read more
