Editorial Review

A Ukrainian boy named Nicki wants his grandmother Baba to knit snow-white mittens for him. She warns her grandson that a white mitten will be hard to find if he loses it in the snow, but of course he promptly does just that! What happens next is the surprising part, as a mole takes refuge in the lost mitten, then a rabbit, then a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, and a fox.If you think the mitten might be a wee bit stretched out at this point, just wait: "Then a big bear sniffed at the mitten. The animals were packed in tight, but the bear didn't care. He crawled in anyway." When a tiny mouse squeezes in, her whiskers tickle the bear's nose. He sneezes, and "Aaaaa-aaaaa-ca-chew!" all the animals fly out of their crocheted cave. As the mitten sails through the air, Nicki spots it, reclaims it, and takes it home to show his smiling Baba.Read more

Exotic, beautiful, and instructive, this "mathematical folktale" by author-illustrator Demi emerged from her love of India. The narrative and the evocative illustrations combine to create a real sense of the culture and atmosphere of this romantic land. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot to learn, including girl-power
This is Demi's re-telling of an old folktale of a king who orders that all rice in his kingdom must be stored in the royal granaries so that there would be food in times of famine; but when his people start to go hungry, he refuses to open the granaries, claiming that the situation was not bad enough to warrant doing so - until a small child outsmarts him by asking for a grain of rice doubled every day for a month.
5-0 out of 5 stars a tale to delight both young and old
My daughter is three and loves this book -- not just for the gorgeous fold-out illustrated spread of the caravan of elephants carrying the rice on the 30th day -- but because she can follow along with the story. The tale is of a rich greedy rajah who doesn't want to share, but is then outwitted by a young girl and forced to give up all the grain in his storehouses. At the end, he is humbled and vows to be a more fair and wise ruler. My daughter loves to sit with one grain of rice in her hand like Rani on the title page of the book.I can see her forming rudimentary mathematical concepts, but I won't push it.There's plenty of time to return to this book when we introduce the times tables.
5-0 out of 5 stars One grain of rice = many valuable lessons for students
One Grain of RIce is not only a bookof math, it is also a folktale. It shows how rice can grow from one grain, to two grains,to four grains, to 8 grains to 16 grains and all the way up to a whole barn full of grain.

I loved this book as a child, my sister and I would go around saying the tongue twister name over and over!We would try and out do each other by who could say it the fastest. Now she is adopting a beautiful daughter from China and I thought this is the perfect book for my new neice. She will be able to enjoy this fun story of two brothers who not only play well together but help each other when one is in trouble, like falling into a well.It teaches children that even if they are not the first born they are just as special.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tikki Tikki Tembo
Love this book. Read it as a child, and now read it to my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite read-aloud book during elementary school.
When I was in kindergarten, our teacher played the cassette for our class as she turned the pages of the book...letting us hear the story as it unfolded. It has left a lasting impression, which Iwill pass to my kids. I have wanted to get a copy of it because I loved the tongue twister name and I'm happy to see Amazon carries it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My "mixed-race" daughter loves this book
Cretins have deprived children of this classic for too long. The story of Sambo and his clever triumph over adversity with the stubborn tigers is a perfect metaphor for this original work's welcome reappearance and widespread acclaim. The illustrations are charming and simple, with bright high-contrast colors, like a child's view of the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite book from Grandma's house.
This was one of my favorite books growing up. The book is about a family in "India", and I am not sure why it is considered racist.Tigers are not found in Africa, and many of my friends from India have heard the story and like it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ah...for the Love of Strega Nona...and a Magic Pasta Pot!
Ah...the memories.I remember reading this at story time when I was in grade school (kindergarten or first grade...not sure which) and I just had to share it with my own kids.Strega Nona (Grandmother Witch) is a classic and with good reason. It's got the old grandma witch who helps people with her magic (potions, cures, and sometimes just plain ol' good advice)...but she's getting on and she advertises in town for someone to help her out.Big Anthony (who apparently doesn't listen so well) fits the bill nicely and moves into Strega Nona's place (room and board included for all his work).

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This story is one of the Cinderella tales however this one is from Mexico.A young girl goes and cooks for the governor, and the governor is amazed by the taste of the meals that this girl can cook. However Domitila's mother dies and she must return home. The prince wanting to taste the wonderful food again goes out and searches for the woman who can cook a feast out of weeds.Although the governor faces some hardships and dishonest people in the end finds Domitila and marries her. This is a wonderful take off of the classic Cinderella story.I like it because it has Mexican traditions in it and the illustrations are wonderful. This book would be great to use as an introduction to different cultures. If I were to use this in my classroom I would try to get other countries versions of Cinderella so that they children could see even more differences and similarities in the stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now including culture, morals, and interest for boys
The story of a Mexican Cinderella character, this book is beautifully done with warmly coloured oil on canvas paintings that poignantly draw to mind the dry Mexican landscape. Most importantly, the illustrator has resisted the urge to create perfect characters, and instead presents a pleasant looking "Cinderella" with bland features and a square jaw, perhaps because the story is based on the family legend of the Rivero family of Hidalgo, Mexico. The author's text is mostly traditional for a fairy tale, but includes Spanish words with translations on the back page. The plot holds more interest than the traditional Cinderella tale, as the Prince is a Governor's son who begins the story haughty and spoiled, but while on a quest for the girl who makes delicious nopales (edible cactus, made by the common people), changes into a person of worth who can truly love a girl of the common people. This focus and character development of the often forgotten prince may make this tale more interesting to boys, as the male character is the hero on a quest, rather than the reward at the end of a girl's suffering.Furthermore, the tale is woven of realistic elements, rather than the fairy godmother, singing mice, and glass slipper of tradition, as it is explained why the father remarries, and includes a period of grief after the mother's death. However, beyond the plot and setting, the author waxes moralistic, presenting the likeable, yet lifeless Domitila as a goody-goody with a loving heart who follows her mother's instructions to "do every task with care, and always add a generous dash of love."Additionally, the text is framed in proverbs, presented both in English and Spanish, on the subjects of love and work, which add "atmosphere," but may get too sermonic to hold the attention of a child.Includes appealing history of the tale, as well as a recipe for Domitila's nopales on the last page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, superbly illustrated picturebook tale.
Jewell Reinhart Coburn's Domitila provides a Mexican Cinderella story as it tells of a talented cook and artist who becomes the Governor's bride. A beautiful account. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cherished Legend told with Beautiful Simplicity
The story of Johnny Appleseed has long been a favorite, cherished legend of the American frontier for generations of young children, and this magical collaboration between poet Lindbergh and illustrator Jakobsen is a sweet and simple way to introduce it. Both poem and illustrations are beautifully simple, lacking all artiface, and are thus wonderfully appropriate for descibing a legend famous for those same qualities.

Absolutely the best work of fiction EVER. Indeed, I too wish, that there were 1001 stories or even 1.000.001 ones inside this lovely book but all good things must come to an end.5-0 out of 5 stars text by Geraldine McCaughrean;illustrations by Stephen Lavis
Oxford University Press, 1993.Stories (meant for children) include fables, romances, narrative jokes, and fairy tales, linked to one another by the King and Queen's own love story.Shahrazad's attempts to stave off execution by telling just one more story have been expanded to fuller effect than in many versions. The book is written in a style that is clear, gripping, and poetic, conveying the flavor of the original and preserving the context of a magic, jinni-ridden desert world. 12 color plates and many b/w illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gilgamesh shines through
I am grateful to Ms. McCaughrean for her distillation of this story. I have been reading various translations and a couple of retellings of the Gilgamesh story for the past thirty years or so, always enjoying the story but always with a sense that I was missing something. Finally, with this retelling I "get it." The elements of the story finally fall into place. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful retelling of the Epic of Gilgamesh for students
We believe Gilgamesh was a historical king of Uruk in Babylonia, on the River Eurphrates in what is now Iraq, who lives around 2700 B.C.E."The Epic of Gilgamesh" is the oldest recorded story in the world, having been originally carved on twelve stone tablets, which have broken apart in the past four thousand years. These twelve tablets, written in the Akkadian language by an author named Shin-eqi-unninni, were found in the ruins of the library of Ashurbanipal, king of Assyria (668-627 B.C.E.) at Nineveh (the library was destroyed by the Persians).5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to An Ancient Story
This is a beautifully written version (with illustrations that really capture the ancient ambience of the story) of the oldest written story in the world. It deals with the themes common to allgreat literature (friendship, mortality, aspirations, love) in a way that makes sense to young people. The struggles and achievements of Gilgamesh, an ancient Sumerian king, illustrate the enduring concerns of mankind over time and lend perspective to man's search for meaning today. I had to read a version of the Egyptian story when I was in the 6th grade,I don't think it was this exact take on the tale, however I remember enjoying it very much--it opened me up to people across the world sharing the same story in different ways.Climo seems to have really zeroed in on that idea, with all of her various retellings of the Cinderella tale from all over the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars a good retelling of a classic favorite
This retelling of Cinderella is rather different from the classic version, but still retains much of the same plot. Rhodopis, a Greek slave, is picked on by the Egyptian servants in her master's household. She befriends the animals, and dances for them often. One time, her master saw her dancing and was so impressed that he gave her a pair of slippers gilded in rose-red gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whimsical, Metaphorical, and Stunning
This is a beautiful tale that is sure to captivate any child- or adult with a wonderful imagination.I appreciate the folktale in all of its Rabbic glory. That said, what made me completely unable to move my eyes from the pages were illustrator Kristina Swarner's beautiful images. They alone, are worth the price of the book.Stunning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for children
What a wonderful book for children. The story is simple yet enthralling. The illustrations are amazing. We have a 5-month old son and he was captivated by the brilliant colors while mom and dad were captivated by the story, as well as the illustrations. This is the kind of book you will want to read to your child for many nights and years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book for kids of any age
This is a wonderful book for kids of every faith. The illustrations are stunning and are a perfect addition to Schwartz's poetic text. I've used this as a baby present for parents across the spectrum of beliefs and have heard wonderful responses to it. I couldn't recommend it more highly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very fun book
My 2 year old son LOVES this book. What makes it even better is that I enjoy reading it too.The premise is simple - a potato grows so big the farmer can't pull it out so he calls his wife to help and then she calls the daughter and so on.After it is finally out, the family shares it with the town.We love the rythmic wording and watercolor pictures.Give it a chance, it's cuter than these descriptions make it sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, compelling story for little ones
My young children loved this book. It has a simple, rhythmic story line that builds satisfyingly to an exciting conclusion, when the family finally pulls the huge potato out of the ground. The illustrations are lively and amusing. This book is just right for children under six. Personally, I even found the unembellished nature of the book refreshing, and I read lots of books to kids every day! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Stories of clever boys
This is an excellent collection of folktales featuring heroes who overcome adversity using their wits rather than brute force. My six-year-old son absolutely loves this book, his favourite story is The Devil with Three Golden Hairs, but he loves them all.I enjoy reading most of the stories to him myself, though I admit I found a couple of them a little dull, but most of them are wonderful. The stories come from many different cultures, but all feature clever, likeable heroes .This book should appeal to any boy with imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Folktales for Boys & Others!
This is a great collection of folktales specifically selected for the author's sons and grandson. The stories are interesting and exciting - they'll hold the attention of the most reluctant reader. Disguised under the fun tales are great lessons of character and integrity that boys today need so desperately to hear. I highly recommend it to parents, teachers, and kids! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He is not big.He is not strong. He is fan-freakin-tastic
Is there any higher praise an author/illustrator can receive than to hear a reviewer say, "Well, I never really loved anything else this person did, but I think this book is bloody brilliant"?Probably. But I for one feel that Gerald McDermott (who I've always respected but never felt any real affection for) really hit the nail on the head with this book."Zomo" has the near impossible task of being both amusing and informative. So many African folktales relayed in children's picture books end up being a little dry and dated. For example, the book "Zomo" most resembles in plot is, "A Story, A Story" by G. Haley.Yet that book is a dour dull creation when compared to this amazing little concoction. This is a book that every child should read at least once in their lives.5-0 out of 5 stars Do you think Zomo the Rabbit is Bugs Bunny's ancestor?
One of the universal figures in mythology is the trickster, from Hermes of classical mythology to Iktomi of the Indians of the American plains.Zomo the Rabbit is an example of an animal trickster and is often at the center of many of the traditional tales of West Africa, while other cultures tell similar stories about the Spider and the Tortoise using guile and trickery to outwit their larger foes.4-0 out of 5 stars Unique vibrant illustrations
Zomo is a rabbit who is "clever" but wants "wisdom" so goes to SkyGod, who tells him he must do "three impossible things:" bring him "the scales of Big Fish in the sea, "the milk of Wild Cow" and "the tooth of leopard."Zomo tricks the fish into dancing to his drumbeat until his scales fall off, tricks the cow into ramming the palm tree until she's stuck so he can milk her (reminds me of Brer Rabbit and Sis Cow), and then trips the leopard on the slippery scales and milk to get the tooth.Unique, vividly colored illustrations accompany the simple story.I will say I don't quite get the ending where he earns wisdom, and all he does with it is run very fast (wasn't he doing that already?).Overall however, the illustrations and clever rabbit make a great story for my toddler. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Whellin' A Deal
Bear is a very wealthy animal that is undeserving of his good fortune and Hare is a struggling husband/father trying to feed his family. When Hare and his wife come up with a clever plan for food, Hare decides to try it.Might I mention that Bear owns land that is very good for a vegetable garden.

I absolutely loved this children's book. Even I was taken at first by the rabbit's cleverness. It is a cute story and was very entertaining. The rabbit sure did know how to trick that old bear into giving up all the crops! ... Read more
