Wonderful
While this book is geared towards children, I found it to be very helpful to me as a beginning French college student. I originally bought this mainly for it's pictures and dual translations as I'm a visual learner and because I've heard many foreign language audio programs that I didn't care for at all. This, however, is obviously done by a native speaker (and a good singer at that).
Painless colloquial French
I was surprised at how much I liked this book. Most language books cover the basic, standard vocabulary in a set format. This one covers colloquial vocabulary that children learn, so you hear the endearments that parents use with their children and how roosters crow and the words for 'see-saw' and common phrases like 'Time to wake up!'. I can see myself using some of these phrases as ice-breakers in informal chats in my travels. Delightful!

A great book, but not as advertised.
Unlike what the editorial review states, this book is not about 2 young men from New York. Rather, this is the Spanish translation of The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton's first and most popular book. It's about 3 teenagers and their gang from the wrong side of the tracks in 1960s Tulsa, Okla. It's a great book about friendship and growing up and I would encourage anyone to read it. If you can read the English edition, do - it flows a lot better and is more realistic.

A good book to use; but an instructor is a must
I have experience using this book with my French I class, and it really is a good way to start.It provides a large selection of basic vocabulary (much of which I see when attempting to read French news articles, etc, and my own literacy surprises me).It is well-designed, beginning with basic items (meetings and greetings, how to say Hello, How are you?, and so forth), and ending with more obscure items (among the last lessons are indication of position: on, behind, in front of, etc; and adjectives describing people and items).The book is friendly to the eyes, color and illustrations abound.Exercises to reinforce the lesson are plentiful, though for even more extra practice I would suggest purchasing the workbook which accompanies the text.The biggest problem I can see with this book is something that occurs when studying nearly every foreign language (so it shouldn't be taken too hard here):lack of an instructor.Few languages are intuitive, and French sounds can be exceedingly confusing for an Englishperson attempting to learn the language (there are more silent letters than one can count, and things that look one way are pronounced another).This makes a practiced instructor a necessity, and no, tapes don't really work: you must have an interactive person to help correct the tiny accent problems, etc, which occur, and tapes simply cannot respond that way.But, I digress.This is certainly a worthy book, but it's best to wait until you have a class that uses it...in which case you will more than likely be provided with a copy anyway (unless you'd like an extra to keep at home, make markings in, etc).Read more

Do not quote this book
If you like to collect printed fallacies and errors, this is the book for you. How does one man describe hundreds of languages in technical terms without knowing anything about them? Simple, when confused, publish! Shame on Routledge Press for not editing this this volume. Errors are rampant in the phonologies, orthographic systems, phonological descriptions, and syntactic descriptions of the numerous languages covered. A language here may miss a vowel or two in the inventory, but that's OK as another language makes up for it with nonexistent vowels and consonants (Berber gets five extra vowels!). Malagasy phonemic stress is supposedly on the penultimate syllable!! Many of the "interesting facts" grow out of bad research, e.g. Yup'ik Eskimo, for instance, is supposedly unique as it doesn't have labial consonants except w and m. Well, what about p - a common Yup'ik consonant and geminated in the language name. I cannot enumerate the many errors in this book, as I do not feel like writing a dissertation at this time, but assure you that they are everywhere...This book needs to be recalled immediately.

Use this book with care - terminology chaos
Chances are, if you bought this expensive and technically oriented book, that you are someone looking for accurate linguistic data about a widerange of languages. Well, you won't find it here.Read more

Ecce Romani
This is a good book. It presents concepts in an understandable way. It also provides lots of practice for everything. Great addition to any student's learning activities!
Students LOVE making their own books. I have used this activity in many of my Spanish classes - ages 4 all the way to 17 years (teenagers still like to color and make things of their own - I just have them add some original sentences of their own and expand on the story.)

A good supplement to other Cantonese learning books

An excellent supplement or stand-alone text
I first studied Cantonese in 1974, using the Yale University text of Parker P.F. Huang. In 2002 I acquired Basic Cantonese by Yip & Matthews. It was an excellent review and also clarified certain points further. In addition, it had the benefits of more recent linguistic scholarship. Best I've seen, and I've seen a few!

Fewer mistakes, but several corrections needed
Another reviewer had commented on a myriad of errors in this series of board books. He did not comment on this one specifically, so I purchased it. There are several errors, which can be considered minor compared to all the errors in the "My toys, Mis jugetes" board book. Again, there seems to be a lack of quality control in checking the correctness of the Spanish words before going to print, hence my rating.
Great teaching resource!
This is a nice sturdy book that my boys go back to right after we get dressed in the morning and repeat the words in Spanish and English (They are 2 and 3 1/2 years.)

Good book, would have preferred no romaji
Children's book or no, I was hoping this picture dictionary would be very useful. Unfortunately it's usefulness is abated by the use of romaji. Do not be mistaken, kana and kanji are used -- each word/image is broken up into english, romaji, and its proper kana/kanji. However, I would very much have prefered that it just be English and kana/kanji with furigana/rubi where required. As it stands, the romaji becomes a crutch and is also the only way of learning the pronunciation of the kanji, something I very much dislike.
Beginning Book
I got this book some years ago.I used it to name things in some of my pictures, but other than that, It's not very helpful to me.But I used this book for a while.But as I got more advanced in Japanese, the book was opened less.I'd recommend this book with another book or computer program, one that teaches simple sentences and also Hiragana, Katakana, and is you feel up to learning it, Kanji.

AP Spanish:Preparing for the Language Examination
Great supplement to your textbook.It has material relevant to the examination.It includes a list of vocabulary the teacher can give to students and exercises to prepare them for the AP Spanish 4 examination.

Excellent book. No answer key.
This book is one of the best preparation materials and definitely worth the price, but there are no answers- anywhere. Also, the audio CDs do not come with it.

Great practice!
We use this book in my AP Spanish class.There are tons of pictures, reading passages, and other exercises that match the AP Spanish test.I feel like I'm learning a lot from this book.By itself it would not be very helpful.If you're enrolled in an AP Spanish class and/or using other review materials like Barron's or Princeton Review it should be quite helpful. ... THE book you need
I totally agree with the other reviews about the value of this book. I have (and still use) Henry Stern's Dutch grammar book, but was to the point where I needed more information. Well, I sure got it! I was searching for something good but not quite as expensive as this book, but finally broke down and got it. It's well worth the cost. The most useful Dutch grammar you will ever need
Somewhere out there there may be a more comprehensive Dutch grammar for English speakers, but you won't need it unless you are a scholar. This book covers pretty much every useful grammatical topic you will need for learning Dutch. Thankfully, Dutch is not a particularly difficult language for English speakers, so that fact helps keep the size of this grammar manageable. Any assiduous student should be able to master it in less that six months. After reading it you should be able to read any newspaper; and although speaking is a totally different animal, there is no reason you should not have a good grounding in speaking proper Dutch. The book, however, does not delve into colloquialisms to a great degree.

Great Dutch grammar
That's a very good grammar. I'm a Portuguese native speaker and it is very difficult to a Latin language speaker to learn a Germanic language, butthis grammar made it easier.
