5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful regional folk tales
The only way these stories could be better is if Hayes could tell them to you personally. All children, but especially those from the American southwest, will appreciate having a collection of these oft-told tales.Get ready to laugh about the day it snowed tortillas and get shivers when the wind's moans down by the ditch sound like those of a woman. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any teacher
This book is the best book I have read dealing with the pressures and dangers of joining a gang. The author gives you a realistic view of what it means to be a part of a gang. The story follows a young boys quest to belong. You get to watch this young boy slowly drift away from his familyand friends into the gang lifestyle, until something tragic makes himrealize that it doesn't have to be this way. This book does an incrediblejob of making you realize all that kids go through when faced with pressureto join gangs. This is a book that I am going to use in my classroom toopen the eyes of my students.I believe this book is informing andempowering kids to not join gangs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Latin Textbook
Latin for Americans by B L Ullman and Charles Henderson is the best Latin textbook series on the market today. I purchased all three books. It is available as Level 1, 2 and 3. It has vocabulary, Roman culture, grammar, exercises, a Latin paragraph to read and translate and excellent pictures in every chapter of the book. The books also have a workbook for Level 1 and 2. These books were first printed in 1941 and the most recent copyright is 2003/2004 which is the 9th edition. The workbooks reinforce the material that is in the textbooks. These textbooks are easy to read and understand. These textbooks are used in most high school Latin classes. Some colleges may also use these books. I rate these books as number 1 with an A plus! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Delight for All Ages
I'm a paper artist who also happens to be a Hans Christian Andersen fan.I bought the book for myself, although it would be a terrific selection for a child who likes to use scissors and glue or who might be interested in the person behind some of their favorite fairy tales. It's hard to find many printed examples outside of Denmark of Hans Christian Andersen's cut paper work.Beth Wagner Brust is a paper cutter herself and brings this enthusiasm to her book. She has performed a great service for Andersen fans and paper cutters of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Real Treasure
Like so many Americans, I had no idea HC Andersen was a paper-cutting genius, until reading the series of articles by Ms. Brust in the LA Times. Not to mention that he cut these "amazing" intricate pieces while telling one of his stories to a roomful of listeners at the same time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Not only is the author great (I know her!) but this book explores an interesting topic. Those paper cuttings are unreal! I mean they are real, but they are so amazing! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good but need phonetic translarions
the book is great for people wjo can read Farsi but it would be better if it included Phoneyic translations. Also, for you children it would the pictures are a little absreacr. Photos would be better. The secrion on the body is hard for even an adult to figure out what they are trying to depict. The animal page is wonderful and with a lack of English-Harsi books available it is okay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Farsi dictionary for beginners
This has colorful drawings and the translations are accurate, according to the student for whom I purchased this item. However, it is less suited for middle school (my class level) and more likely to be used for children younger than 12 because it doesn't have photos. It is a wonderful picture book for the beginning English native-Farsi speaker.

4-0 out of 5 stars great, but. . .
This book is lovely, but the words are in english (english script) and urdu (urdu script) - so if you don't read the urdu script this book is of no use.It is for children, or beginners, and maybe the target audience children can read both scripts, or would start to do so early.Unfortunately I don't! It would have been nice if they had also added the words in the Hindi-devanagari script, since Hindi and Urdu are practically the same language, but use different scripts. . .If you can read the urdu - it's a lovely book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
This is the second CD I bought to have my baby listen to something Italian (since I am Italian)but again I was disappointed because the songs are translation of American ones and they do not really work in Italian... they do not rhyme and even the sounds of things are wrong!!! I do not know who did this CD, certainly not Italians who live or have lived there recentely!!! Absolutely not worth it!!! Not the music I want my baby to listen to!!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless without stress
As any student of Russian knows, the words are long and multi-syllabic. Stress is extremely important in Russian.Russians frequently do not understand me simply because I stress the wrong syllable. That stress is not indicated in this book is an unforgivable oversight.Who wants to look up every word in a dictionary? The other problem with this book is that there are far too many useless words.Who needs the word for a hand operated drill? These are definately not the first 1000 words you will need.Maybe 300-400 of these words are useful and should be in your initial vocabulary. The pictures are a nice learning tool although it's not always clear what the "answer" is from the picture.Knowing what I know now, I would not buy this book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best thousand words book!!!
it is the best thousand words book ever!!! it helped a girl from russia who didn't learn any english at all learn some very interesting vocasbulary in a week!!

1-0 out of 5 stars An attractive, engaging dictionary with one flaw.
This is a lovely, colorful dictionary that both children and adults can have fun with while learning scads of basic, important vocabulary. The only flaw is that the entries do not contain accent marks to show where the stress lies on a word. Stress is vital information in Russian since it can show up on almost any syllable of a word; and knowing where the stress is is vital for a correct pronunciation of a word. A user will need to refer to a second dictionary in order to find this information. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing To Formal Lessons for Beginners!
I got the audio cassette version just before cds became ubiquitous in my country and also because the cd versions were not available at the time and given my vast experience with tons of tapes over the years, I knew it was only a matter of time before the oxide layer would fall off and the sound quality would slowly but slowly degrade.I hence got a techie friend to immediately burn the tapes onto cds for me; he managed to squeeze everything onto 2 discs.
1-0 out of 5 stars not a book
Please be aware if you think you are buying both the book (as others indicate in their reviews) that you are only purchasing the audio CD

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent way to start
Colloquial Chinese by Kan Qian is exactly the resource I was seeking when I set out to learn Chinese. Vocabulary and points of grammar and usage are introduced in dialogues followed by clear explanatory notes. The dialogues are realistic and varied, starting with an appropriately slow and stilted first meeting at the airport and moving on to flirting, shopping and catching up with old friends. The notes give just enough information so that you can be comfortable with the material at hand, with further complications introduced gradually. Listening/reading exercises offer more practice and enhance the feeling of success. A psychological boost is provided by the fact that several dialogues feature Chinese natives chatting with people from English-speaking countries: if "Amy" and "David" can speak good Chinese, so can I! Pinyin (mainland China's official and logical romanization system) and Chinese characters are both used, with optional exercises in character writing. The CDs or tapes are essential for anyone learning on their own.

3-0 out of 5 stars We Like Toes, Ears, and Nose Better
These two books - Where Is Baby's Belly Button and Toes, Ears, and Nose are so similar, you only need one of them. And my boys prefer Toes, Ears, and Nose. I'm not sure why, but maybe it's because more body parts are discussed.

5-0 out of 5 stars cute book
My two year old son likes this book, but it would be even better for a younger child. It will be passed down to his baby brother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loads of Fun for Toddlers!
My 16 month old daughter is not overly excited by most books and loses intrest quickly, but she loves this book and can play with it for an hour. She loves to bring it to us to read with her, and she loves lifting the flaps and she giggles at her accomlishment of showing us where "baby's belly button/eyes/hands etc" are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to introduce second language to little ones!
The "Teach Me" series is a great way to introduce a second language to little ones. The songs on "Teach Me Spanish" are adorable and they are sung in both English and Spanish so that children can make meaningful connections between the two languages. It is not too overwhelming with lists of vocabulary and grammar. However, if a child learns even one song on the tape, she learns a list of at least 10-15 vocabulary words, grammatically correct sentence structure and fluid, correct pronunciation.Age-appropriate for even preschoolers, because it is learning through music and is fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Singing
Lively music, familiar tunes. Too fast for language learners to follow.I listen and learn the songs in my car, then teach them to my students.I bought the other two (Teach me more Spanish, and Teach me even more Spanish) and I and my kids love them all!5-0 out of 5 stars Great Way for a Small Child to Learn Spanish!

4-0 out of 5 stars Deutsch Aktuell
This book is great for anyone who is just starting to learn German. It is up to date and has a lot of great examples. It takes you through the language teaching you to converse with others giving you easy to do assisgnments that you can do with a partner. If you are just starting out you might want to order the teachers edition so you have the anwsers to the assisgnments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, doable textbook for a classroom
This was the text book used in my high school to teach German 1.It has short chapters each with a theme, vocabulary list and dialog or short passage. Each chapter introduces a basic grammar concept. There are many review questions, so you repeat the grammar and vocab enough to recognize it later. At the end of the book is a grammar reference so it is easy to review past concepts, check what you know or look ahead.I found the grammar section and index at the end to be well done and they were helpful to me studying outside of class.(This is part of a two book set.Deutsch Aktuell:Level 2 completes the treatment and would be used during the second year of a course.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction into German
Considering how language is best learned at the earlier ages of life, the textbook targets its intended audience (middle schoolers-high school freshman) very well. The book also includes mini-features which drive the student's focus to various regions of Germany, such as Berlin, Kiel, und Muenchen, and their customs. As my German I teacher said after completing the course, speaking to the whole class, "I now feel comfortable that if you live in Germany for 6 weeks, you would not want to return to the United States."Solid instruction in any class comes with not only a knowledgeable teacher, but a dependable textbook. My collegiate German studies stem from this textbook, and I could not have asked for a better beginning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Vendettas against inanimate objects
I studied for four years under this series in high school, and graduated with an awareness of my own slack-jawed ignorance to the german language. This book series subscribes firmly to the notion that total immersion is a necessary fact of language acquistion. When that immersion comes in the form of cartoonish illustrations and eerily androgynous audio tapes, monolingualism becomes a tempting option. This series taught sixty students, once eager to learn the german language, that german is both laughable and abhorrent. If you are a teacher and you seek an instructional series for your classroom, please heed my warning. This series is insulting, obtuse, and poorly thought-out from its inception. I am more confident in my Latin after six weeks of study than I was after four years of Komm Mit German. Bitte, kauf diesen buch nicht. Es hat mir bose gemacht, und gab mir nicht von den sprache des Deutschland. I'm sure there are grammatical mistakes in the above passage, which I lay at the feat of the quality my instruction failed to possess. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate translation of a classic
This is the same translator responsible for the dreadful Spanish version of The Cat in the Hat.His style of unimaginative transliteration, however, works much better for P.D. Eastman's simple, plain, prose than for Dr. Seuss' elaborate rhymes. He does manage to screw up the classic line "You are not my mother, you are a snort!", but most of the rest of the original comes through okay. Not quite as enjoyable to read aloud in Spanish as in English, but still fun.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for spanish students!
I am a Spanish teacher and use "Eres t mi mam because the book is a great review for the preterite, imperfect and future.I have lessonsdesigned for the verb grammar and my students really have fun reading achildhood story in Spanish that is so familiar to them in English. So ifyou want a fun way to review the past verb tenses and the future use thisbook and its video.
