5-0 out of 5 stars Jesse Smoke was a real boy.
Through the eyes of a young man, we were able to see the tragedy that the Andrew Jackson administration orchestrated in behalf of the Cherokee nation as well as many other Southeastern Indian tribes. We were able to feel the hurt and know the injustice of a peaceful people uprooted and driven, in the dead of winter, to a reservation in what is now Oklahoma. We were able to feel the hopes and dreams of a boy and a people shattered by greed, politics and military might. This is a classic which should be in every school library in the country. Yes, I have that drop ofblood in my veins that makes me a bona fide Cherokee. I am proud that the legend of a proud, industrious, creative people still remains in our hearts.

If you like historical fiction, then I think you should read The Journal of Jesse Smoke because it was very exciting. It was exciting when the soldiers came to take all the Cherokee and Creeke Indians.I thought that was interesting because then a white man came trying to steal the house when a soilder beat up.Then, they went to a lot of forts. Many died. The Cherokee and Creeke Indians called that journey the Trail of Tears.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Watch out ! Reading Level Deflated
A fourth grade teacher used this book in her class for guided reading/literature circle, based on the age range listed. As a special educator in the classroom, I quickly became concerned for the vast majority of the class who did not grasp 80% of the book. The author requires the reader to draw many inferences, a difficult task for nine to ten-year olds. There is a great deal of historical period vocabulary and prior knowledge of the Revolutionary War and colonialism that needs to be pre-taught for anyone under sixth grade to comprehend, especially as the curriculum standards don't introduce the American Revolution until fifth grade.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Journal of William Thomas Emerson, A Revolutionary War Patriot
I used this book for a literature circle group. Before reading you need to do a lot of background building about the conflicts between the British and the colonist that lead up to the revolutionary war. Lots of unfamiliar vocabulary. Good for very experienced readers. Less experienced readers will need more support. Very enjoyable reading and the students are learning a lot about the revolutionary war and colonial era

Can you imagine being a 14 year old boy and a orphan during the revolutionary war patriot in Boston, Massachusetts, 1774?

This book was about a boy named Jasper Jonathan Pierce, an orphaned indentured servant who is in search for a better life. (...). This was the worst book I have ever read in my entire life (I have read a lot of books)! This was one of the first historical fiction books I have read and it will be the last! 5-0 out of 5 stars "The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty"
The book "The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty" is by Ellen Emerson White and the book is for 6-9th graders. The book is a very good and well written. Patrick turned down college scholarships to enlist in the Marines. In December 1967, just out of basic training, he finds himself in Vietnam, on a combat base, out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by mountains, and jungle and a whole lot of enemy soldiers. He suffered during the four months spent under constant assault by the North Vietnamese at Khe Sanh. Naive and provincial, the teen is matured by combat. He develops a close friendship with Bebop, a Detroit jazz musician, and begins to question whether he and his comrades are actually completing anything. Too many gunshots, too many mortar attacks, too many deaths. Not enough food, water, and mail. Patrick writes that he doesn't want to make any more friends, because you keep losing them all the time. In April 1968, the men of Hill 881S are sent to a "safe" base at Quang Tri. There, in an ironic twist of fate, Patrick is badly wounded, and Bebop is killed in a mortar assault. Readers will respond to this absorbing book's vivid descriptions, and fast-paced action. This book uses sensitivity when describing a painful episode in America's history. ... Read more

It is a good book for more boys. It can keep you interested in it. There was alot of flashback in the story. It made every body jump.

"The Journal of Rufus Rowe" I found to be boring.I was looking forward to this book since it comes from the stand point of the Confederate, but I felt it didn't come from either side - but neutral.I think I find author Sid Hite's writing to be bland, as I've yet to find a book he's writing that I like. I felt the journal entries were lacking and history was not presented in an interesting fashion.I do not recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Death and carnage at Stonewall
The journal of Rufus Rowe brings the reader into the mind of a young 16-year boy. Rufus witness the horror of war: "I shall never forget the smell of gun power" and "broken windows, furniture in the streets, and houses on fire" and "defeat in war means loss and victory in war means loss". Rufus patriotism and love Fredricksburg and Virginia was replaced by the burdens of carnage, death, and suffering.

2-0 out of 5 stars A major let-down.
"The Journal of Augustus Pelletier: The Lewis and Clark Expedition, 1804" was not a good addition to the "My Name Is America" series, and a disappointment for author Kathryn Lasky.I was looking forward to more history, but instead was shown a lot of scenery. After reading this book, I felt like I walked away only reading half of his diary. The beginning started out very good, but by the end, it was as if Lasky didn't know what to write anymore, and decided to stretch it out.The epilogue was also a disappointment. Not even good for beginner learners of this time in history.I do not recommend. ... Editorial Review

It is 1852, and 10-year-old Wong Ming-Chung, or Bright Intelligence--or Runt, as he is most commonly called--has arrived at the gold mines of California after a dangerous journey from China. Exchanging the famine and war of his native country for the brutal bullies and grueling labor in America, Runt joins his uncle and countless others in the effort to strike it rich on the great "Golden Mountain." Unfortunately, he, and most of the rest of the dreamers, soon discover that there's no such thing as a Golden Mountain, only dirt, mud, and tiny, occasional flecks of gold dust--flecks that are to be turned over to the owners of the mines, in return for barely livable wages. However, someone as clever and resourceful as Runt can still find true opportunity in this land. He and his uncle team up to find ingenious new ways of making money, and to defend themselves against the bitter, racist white Americans. Along the way, Runt develops lasting friendships with many people from all over the world, learning ways to communicate with them in spite of cultural and language differences.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entertaining
This book gave an excellent snapshot of life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.Finn and his friends keep the book moving nicely, with a number of laugh-out-loud episodes. The writing style is clever, and the characters seem to be speaking directly to the reader.Although the newsboys' strike is not covered in great detail, other details about the newsies' lives are readily available. This book is a quick read that is highly enjoyable for kids or adults!

5-0 out of 5 stars News in the making.
"The Journal of Finn Reardon: A Newsie" was a very interesting book.I'm sure you've either heard of your father or grandfather selling newspapers on the street corner. My father did, so this story brought back the stories he used to tell me as a child.Today, the newspaper is delivered to your front doorstep, or you can buy it at stands or supermarkets. In the early 20th century, you relied on tween and teen boys to get your daily dose of news, and this "My America" book explains the daily lives of these boys.Times were most certainly different, since you could let a 12-year-old work a street corner until dark, without any immediate worries. Each day was a struggle, and the money a family made was used immediately on that day; and to think that the Great Depression hadn't hit yet. If you're interested in journalism and newspapers, then this story is an interesting one.I recommend.

I really like the movie "Newsies" that was made in 1992, so when I found this book at our library, I just had to read it. The only thing bad about this book, is that it doesn't have alot of stuff about the strike. The entrees were only 2 paragraphs long. Other than that I think it was a great book. I like Racetrack, Being that he is my favorite in the movie, and in this book, he's not much differant. he's still a smart alac in the book. ... Read more

Many people feel sorry for the Japanese Americans that were treated miserably, but they couldn't begin to imagine what they went through. Ben Uchida and his family knew exactly what the experience was like. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Ben feared for his family knowing that the government would automatically point fingers at the Japanese Americans as being spies. The United States government thought it best to take innocent families away from their safe homes and quiet neighborhoods to very dirty and crowded interment camps. The Uchida family and his family were sent to Mirror Lake along with many families. They tiring journey began on a filthy, stained train to the middle of nowhere. Then they were greeted by the military forcing them off the train leaving there bags and things on the train. To make this day better, they realize that they must share an already too small room with another family. Mirror Lake was the name off the internment camp. After months, and months of living a terrible, miserable life, they are released and apologized to. Ben and his family were taken home only to find their house burned to the ground by angry neighbors. The My Name is America series is an excellent series to read if you enjoy to actually get inside the heads of the characters. The Journal of Ben Uchida is a great example of this.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Journal Of Ben Uchida
This book called the Journal of Ben Uchida is based on a true story and talks about Ben Uchida, who is a prisoner of war basically in a detainee camp called Mirror Lake in the middle of nowhere near San Francisco. Throughout the book he is faced by many problems about what he is to do about the situation and how he should handle things. Some basic things he did not notice before, he now cherishes them for all they are worth. As the story progresses Ben makes new friends and enemies as well. One of the friends (or so it turns out) he made was Mike Masuda. He seemed nice at the start was very caring for them and even started a baseball league inside their camp area, but later on in the story there comes a point when he just snaps and is unkind to everyone else. At the end of the book many of the characters end up dieing in a miserable death, but Ben lives on to tell the story.
3-0 out of 5 stars Journal Of Ben Uchida
The book The Journal of Ben Uchida by Barry Denenberg is about a boy named Ben Uchida who lives in San Francisco, California in the year 1942. Ben Uchida was a normal kid 13 year-old until the bombing of Pearl Harbor and everything changed, everyone around him started treating him different because he was Japanese. This is the story of Ben and his family having to go to a concentration camp and finding out about everything that is going to happen during his stay and everything that is wrong about.

3-0 out of 5 stars Homerun Hitting Book
Read a homerun hitting book about baseball. It is the Negro Leagues and it is the journal of Biddy Owens. It is about a 17 year old boy that is the team equipment manager of the Birmingham Black Barons. He sometimes gets to play right field and hit the ball too. He goes from city to city with the team to baseball games.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Patriot
Scott Pendelton Collins is a true american patriot. In this book he faces many hardships that would make many men runaway with their tails between their legs. He fights through one of the most well known battles of World War Two, D-Day and his company aids in the capture of the French city of St.Lo, and many key cities along the way. He has to walk endless miles and be ready for unexpected attacks, as well as have to be ready to fight with a 30 minute notice. He is hesitant on making friends because he knows that they or he could die at any time. He witnessed many of his new friends die on the beach on D-Day. He also reads about one of his friends deaths in a casuality report. He says the war has changd him in many ways, some good and some bad, and he doesn't think he will ever be able to forget the constant boom of the arterilly fire for both sides, allies and germans.

If you think it's tough just changing schools imagine moving across the Atlantic Ocean! Well that's the dilemma Otto Peltonen has to endure in the book The Journal of Otto Peltonen written by William Durbin.4-0 out of 5 stars The Journal of Otto Peltonen
The Journal of Otto Peltonen by William Durbin is an interesting journal of a Finnish immigrant who finds himself struggling to adjust to a new life in America. Full of action, you can never find a good point to set this book down. Events are always taking place that are making Otto question if he should have just stayed in Finland. At the mine where Otto's father works, danger is always near, causing much for the family to worry about.5-0 out of 5 stars Great account on the hardships of Immigrants
Otto Peltonen and his family leave all their relatives in Finland hoping to find a better life and to join his father. Otto dreams America will be great but when he reaches to the town he finds America is not at all great. At first Otto goes to school but soon finds that his family needs him to work in the coal mines to help them survive. Otto finds work hard in the dusty coal mines and the working conditions are horrible. What Otto can't understand is why some miners are much richer than his family. When Otto learns the truth he was sorry he ever asked. However even with the bad working conditions Otto and his family dream one day they will save up enough money so they will have their own farm like in Finland. This is a great accound by William Durbin on the harships of coal workers live. I highly recommend reading it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a work of Fiction
I was profoundly disappointed by this book. The title says "Journal", and the book's cover shows a photograph that might lead the reader to assume that it is an image of the author. But it is not until the very last page of the book (except for the map) that the author, whose name is absent on the front cover, back cover, or printed edge, admits that this work is fiction.Look also at the editorial review, where it claims "C. J. is an authentic and likable protagonist."Then look at MAB's review.He/she may be under the impression that a 13 year-old wrote this book. The next two reviewers also claim it to be a "Nice historical..", and a "A vivid picture of the time".Not so, as it was written in 2002, a fact not appearing until the last page.I have never encountered a book in which the copyright and printing information are placed on the last page.I wonder why.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great supplemental source for studying history
I never knew I liked historical fiction until I started reading the "My name is America" series. This book does an excellent job of putting the reader into the life of a 13 year old boy who is trying to be a kid, but trying to help his parents with all their worries during the depression and a drought hitting his farming community.
5-0 out of 5 stars A rare historical treat.
"The Journal of C. J. Jackson, a Dust Bowl Migrant, Oklahoma to California, 1935" is such a great book, because I doubt many people know about the dust bowl in Oklahoma.I surely didn't, and I learned a great deal while reading this. I would have never thought that American's would discriminate American's, by calling Oklahoma residents "Okies."But, it's not much different today, if you stop and think about it.That just stuck out in my mind while reading it.The entrees were realistic (although it made me wonder, with C.J. being only 13-years-old, and with minimal schooling, how he could have written so well), and easy to read. You
