3-0 out of 5 stars I love Chris VanAllsburg
This book has a great message, but it seems a little more forced than some of his other titles. All of his books are great for teaching children to infer meaning from text!

5-0 out of 5 stars An educational, magical children's book
When I read this book a tear came to my eye. I knew Chris Van Allsburg was right about recycling and keeping the earth clean. Ifthere are parents that have kids that actually like to keep the earth clean, I suggest they read it to their kids!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not consitent with the morals I want to pass to my children...
This book is a pretty extreme children's story that follows the new religion of environmentalism.Very anti-technology and anti- progress... no lawn mowers, no electric dryers? We received this as a gift and I will not be keeping it.I wouldn't read this book to my children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm in Charge of Celebrations
One of the best picture books ever.I'm one who believes picture books are not just for children and this one proves it! It reflects a wonderful attitude that there's always something out there to celebrate.A most uplifting book.Byrd Baylor is really tuned into nature and Peter Parnell turns those words into unforgetable images.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 5 Star Celebration of Literacy and Imagination
I use this book in the beginning of each school year with my fifth grade students. It always leads to great discussions about what is important to them and leads into interesting writer's notebook entries. The book is a great tool for inferencing, noticing details, and celebrating the little events in our lives that make us who we are.A good book to use when teaching about differences that make each of us unique and how we all have our own set of priorities.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book
I stumbled upon this book recently and, as an avid reader of children's literature, believe it is one of the most amazing books I have seen -- for readers of all ages.It is lyrical, humorous and quiet. The illustrations are spare--and that's all that's needed. Life in the desert is depicted beautifully. I felt like the book was speaking me, calling me to a more mindful way of life.I plan to buy it as gifts for all my friends this year, no matter their age. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 2nd best mushroom book
The pictures in this guide are not quite as nice as in the audubon version but is still easy to use and a nice handy size for carrying in a pocket

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a standard field guide to fungi
This field guide is nearly twenty years old, but there are so few field guides to fungi that it still remains a standard reference. Like all Peterson field guides, it is handy and compact and can easily be taken into the field and pored over with the mushrooms in their wild habitat. The text is detailed and accurate and a "similar species" section is very useful. However, this guide uses painted plates whereas amateurs generally find it easier to identify fungi by photographs. I personally find photographs more accurate, but enjoy paintings in their own right. In this case the paintings are pleasing and quite faithful.
4-0 out of 5 stars mushroom field guide

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting adventure for little girls
My six-year old daughter loved the Rainbow Fairies so much that she could hardly wait for story time every night. She loaned them to her best friend, and now they play Rainbow Magic on the playground at recess. This first installment of the Weather Fairies was no different. These fairy stories really capture her imagination.Although they are slightly predictabley dull for the parent who is reading them, the child's enjoyment more than makes up for it.

Editorial Review

Most children are captivated by snow, but how many go on to make it theirlifework? This beautiful biography, winner of the 1999 Caldecott Medal, tells the true story of a Vermont farm boy who was mesmerized by snowflakes. Wilson Bentley was fascinated by the six-sided frozen phenomena, and once he acquired a microscope with a camera, his childhood preoccupation took on a more scientific leaning. Bentley spent his life taking countless exquisite photographs (many that are still used in nature photography today), examining the tiny crystals and their delicate, mathematical structures. Jacqueline Briggs Martin tells this tale with simple, graceful prose that will engage children's imaginations. Edifying and snowflake-scattered sidebars offer more information about Bentley's methods and snowflake science. The artwork of Mary Azarian, whose 19th-century hand-press illustrations decorate the charming Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Story
Snowflake Bentley tells the delightful story of Wilson Bentley, a man who spent his entire life photographing snowflakes. He lived in Vermont his whole life, a place where snow is as common as dirt, but yet, he was still able to see its marvelous beauty. Children will love reading this book about a topic everyone finds pleasure in, plus they will be inspired by the life of Snowflake Bentley.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bill Bentley and his somewhat odd profession
This book elegantly portrays the life of a rather eccentric man who spent his entire life studying and photographing snowflakes. The artwork is very complementary to his life's story, which is purposefully written with children in mind as the readers. There is enough information available about his life that an entire unit of study can be developed around the themes of winter and snow.Cross-curricular activities can be expanded to other content areas such as Social Studies and Science.I am a teacher and I use this book in conjunction with William Bentley's book of his actual snowflake photos entitled "Snow Crystals".The students learn a lot about snow and about the man.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a unique and wonderful story
I love finding a children's book with a true story. Kids are bombarded with fiction and silliness all day long (which is wonderful in its own right), but it's such a treat to share a true story with children. Bentley's passion for something so child-friendly as snow inspires great feeling in children and adults alike. The book's detailed woodcut illustrations are beautiful in their own right. Buy this and then go out and buy Bentley's book of Snow Crystals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for Young Curious Minds...
As a 3rd Grade School Teacher, I found this book instrumental to my lessons on plant life. Ms. Drizzle and her class answer many of the questions my students come up with before we've read the book so I know that we're reading the right materials for our lessons. Great series for the imagination and for provoking interest in the sciences early in the child's development.

3-0 out of 5 stars The earlier books are much better
We were given a copy of "Magic Schoolbus and the Ocean Floor" as a gift.I then bought "Dinosaurs" and "Senses."There is a difference between the books written only by Joanna Cole and the later books that are basically a comic-book version of the TV show.It takes us a solid 45 minutes to read "Senses", and I even learned some facts."Plants Seeds" is about a 15 minute read-aloud.I say stick with the earlier books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing compared to earlier Magic School Bus books
My 4 year old son fell in love with the earlier books in this series - Hurricane, Ocean Floor, Electricity, Human body, Water Works, Bees. They are rich in detail, and are very engaging for young exploring minds. This one (MSB Kicks Up a Storm) pales by comparison. Not nearly as much detail.Lacks the quality of illustrations and side-commentary that make the earlier ones so special. This is a run-of-the-mill kids book with nothing much to distinguish it.I have read elsewhere that this series took a downturn when it became a TV show.It certainly reads like a comic-book version of a TV show.Take my son's advice - stick with the earlier books in the Magic School Bus series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shicka-Shicka Kaboom!The Book.
It's high summer at school and hot, hot, hot.Carlos is working on a rain catcher, but there's no rain.Ralphie stares out the window and concludes that what they all need to cool down is a big thunderstorm. The only problem is that the kids don't know how weather is made.Is it water? Is it moving air or the heat from the sun that creates weather?

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read-aloud book!
This is an excellent book for reading aloud, especially to a group of toddlers! It's light and easy to hold. The text is large and clear. There is a nice rhythm to the simple and concise sentences. The colorful collage illustrations are almost all double-page vertical, easy to see from a distance, and consist of objects children will be anxious to point out and identify. At the end of this simple story about building a snowman there is a section that pictures and identifies the items used in the collages: buttons, fabrics, fruits, buttons, etc. It's perfect for a game of: "where can you find this [bell] in the story?" "How many of these [seeds] can you find?", and perfect as a springboard for a snowman craft using items from your own sack of 'good stuff'.There is also an explanation of snow with photographs of real snowmen, and directions for making popcorn balls. This book is fun to read and look at, well worth reading over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Snowball o' fun
You walk into your first encounter with "Snowballs" with the vague sense that this is going to be yet another winter picture book containing figures made out of cut paper. And though you are well aware of Ezra Jack Keats's "The Snowy Day", you decide to give Lois Ehlert's book a go anyway. You're hoping you'll end up pleasantly surprised by what you may find. And you're in luck. You are.5-0 out of 5 stars gherring

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for encouragement!
I purchased this book for a toddler and he just loves it!It talks about how a tiny seed who really doesn't think he's going to amount to much, grows into this beautiful plant. He's been told that he will flower but doesn't for awhile - he's just green. Then, when the moon comes out, he blooms with such a magnificent scent that it wakes the lady that planted him.Such a wonderful book to read to anyone, not just little folks.Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Little Seed That Couldn't
Jan Karon has written an inspirational tale "of Encouragement for all Ages". Unlike the little engine that could, the reader is introduced to a seed that was given to a "Nice Lady" who intends to plant it next Spring and watch it grow into a tall blossoming vine. The seed finds all of this preposterous.

This book puts a lot of descriptive writing in it.It doesn't really have a problem.I love the way the author says "slowly dusk pours the syrup of darkness into the forest".In the pictures, they always put the girl's dog with the girl.I think you would like thiss book if you are 9 and up to 12.I loved this book.Giuliana G. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to geography and reference books
Being a glossary, this book is a dictionary of geography terms beginning with "archipelago" and ending with "zone".Definitions are short and incomplete, but enough for the target audience of 7-10 year olds. The illustrations are bold and colorful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Dictionary Type Book!
We are homeschooling our 8yr old son. We wanted to make sure he had a good introduction to geography. As it turns out, He loves it! It's definitions are easy for him to grasp and there are drawings to describe each term. If geography knowledge is important in your home too, I suggest you get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book
Geography is a fun subject because it is so visual. This book has fun, brightly colored pictures that illustrate basic geography words. I found this little gem at a library sale years ago and have used it to help prepare my chldren for our homeschool association geography bees. They love this book too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching kids to be environmentally responsible!
I read this book to my first grade class and they loved it!They enjoyed the fun illustrations and I loved the humerous way that it taught them to think before throwing something away.We started a classroom recycling project after reading this book, at the student's suggestion!I highly recommend this book to any person teaching a child the value of keeping our Earth clean.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wartville Wizard-Good story, great lesson
I recently read this book to a five-year-old little boy who absolutely loved the book.He was intrigued by the pictures (especially the lady with the garbage stuck to her rear-end)and kept finding "clues" to howthe story would end.He really enjoyed the plot and the humor. TheWarville Wizard spurred on great conversations about litter and pollution. The only downfall is that the book doesn't go into why you shouldn't litterother than for the asthetic value of a clean world. But overall, this wasa super book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
Great story to use for Earth Day.Humorous. Lends itself to other classroom activites. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Air Today, Gone Tomorrow
Written in 1995, Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen's latest story begins where it ends - in Ms. Frizzle's classroom. And that's it.Nothing else happened. The Friz and her students simply went on a nice, leisurely field trip. They didn't end up miles beneath the earth's surface digging for rocks; nor did they travel to outer space to hitch a ride with a runaway comet; heck, they didn't even bother to travel backwards in time millions of years to observe ancient animal life.
5-0 out of 5 stars The magic school bus inside a hurricane
I liked this book because it is a good way of showing what a hurricane looks like, how they work, what i can/can not do. It talls you how they are formed and where you can go to be safe from a hurricane.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aw, heck. What's not to like?
For those familiar with the "Magic Schoolbus" series, Mrs. Frizzle's adventures with her class all have a similar plotline.Mrs. Frizzle explains some scientific topic, whether it's the solar system, the dinosaurs, etc. and then lures her children onto her special schoolbus for an adventure.During the adventure the only child that is regularly singled out as the perpetual schlamatzel is Arnold, a boy who doesn't care much for adventures, thank you.In the end, the class is safe and has learned quite a lot, despite themselves.Even Arnold. Then there is a "letters" section in the back where readers wishing to complain about scientific inaccuracies (in this case, how dangerous it would be to be caught in a hurricane) are one-upped by already existing letters. The particular plotline in this hurricane obsessed book was not too dissimilar from the others, and was a lot of fun.I used to read these books to kids that I babysat back in my high school years, and certain types of children love them. The pages are always busy with text, speech bubbles, experiments that kids can do at home, and various factoids sprinkled hither and yon.I do wonder how long these series will last before it is regarded as hopelessly dated by the young. Please note that the review previous to my own was last written in 1997.Currently the show is doing well as a tv series, voiced by Lily Tomlin.Just the same, it would be very difficult to read this book to a group of kids. The books are relatively small and crammed with so much extra text that children will want to handle them one on one, rather than with a large group. Each book would pair well with a companion non-fiction book on the same topic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent field guide
This book is excellent for just carrying around as a field guide, probably one of the best there is. Good artwork and descriptions, kept short and simple, with all general identification features included. Large list of native trees with some exotic species as well, it doesn't leave any important ones out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trees of North America
Real good. Has leaf and bud and fruit drawings. Shows geographically location of each species. Has pictures of bark and branch spacing. Shows general tree height and shape. Information well organized.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lavishly illustrated with just the right amount of detail.
While not as detailed as other field guides, the Golden Books Trees of North America contains just the right amount of information for amatuer naturalists and is lavishly illustrated. The organization of the book also lends itself to quick and accurate identification of trees. The book is a wonderful resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
My younger daughter always repeats - 'I want my mommy'! I enjoyed the book along with my kids. The photography is excellent too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet yet real
Received this book as a baby gift and loved reading it to my son.Now that he has started preschool we read it as a book about separation anxiety.I was a bit concerned that the owl's imagining something bad might have happened to their mom would scare my son. However, I think that many kids worry about just that and it is important to acknowledge this and also reassure them that Mama or Daddy will come back.Get the board book version for endurance as this book will be read over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars I want my mommy!
My two year old LOVES this book. When I ask her "What does Bill say?" She eagerly exclaims "I want my mommy, said Bill!" I feel that this tale can teach our little ones that although your parents may leave, they will return. Great Book! ... Read more
