I bought this book as a gift for a bright young lady who was fascinated with the appearance of the stones themselves, but although I liked the content of the book, I was wholly unable to persuade the recipient even to peruse the text as light reading.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Educational

This book is a seasonal favorite in our home and has been for many years (along with Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert). My 9 y/o daughters love to see the colorful fall photos still, as they did when they were much younger. It seems to inspire their imagination, still, and leads to many discussions about seasons. We love it and hope you will too! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Book
Never read this book.It is boring. The author repeats everything over and over again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Enough
This Everglades story is an interesting ecological mystery, but it's a bit too repetitive. (By now if you've read all my reviews you'll know it's one of my pet peeves.) Searching for a missing alligator the entire story is a bit too much, hm? Well, overall it's a good ecological mystery, but only if you're bored should you make the drastic decision to read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo
I have just finish reading a book call The Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo. It's about a family who don't have a house yet, because they don't have enough money to build a house. The father was in another country, doing business around the world. He doesn't even know what's happening to his family. Many people say that they don't have house. Well they are, but the mother says that they were on a vacation. She always said that every time because she doesn't want people to know it. So now, their daughter named Liza K., is an adventures girl. She knows all the places in the forest. She even has an alligator friend. Now, she and her friends must save the forest from the people who want to destroy, but then, her alligator friend lost. Now, she's on an adventure to find the alligator and stop the destruction of the forest. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Children Love this book!!!!
My Children are 15 months old and we read this one almost every night. It's a sweet rhyming story with a happy ending!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming book!
I love this book and so does my 3 year old boy.The story is adventurous and has a nice, subtle ecological lesson. It also has a lesson about how you can be little but still accomplish great things. The pictures are gorgeous. The whole story rhymes and has such a nice rhythm.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
Mum's opinion: The Snail and the Whale is a delight to read with the rhyming text and adventurous journey around the world. To pick two creatures so totally different in every respect is pure genius and works like a dream. Not sure who got the most pleasure from this--me reading it or the little one listening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun way to introduce science to little kids!
It's absolutely perfect for our 3- and 5-year olds! It's a great way to introduce science concepts to them. The experiments are simple to prepare, very interesting and lots of fun. Also, most of the materials are common items used at home.We have done a number of the experiments without spending much money at all.It comes very handy, too, during rainy or snowy days. The activities help keep the kids from getting bored inside the house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource
My kids loved these fun learning activities. Enough to keep them busy through early childhood. Nothing canned here. . . all creative and discovery-focused. Makes biology and even physics accessable to very young children. You can't go wrong with this outstanding guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars This series is GREAT
This is really handy for the budding scientist in your preschooler. Experiements are written so that the early reader can understand and do the experiments on their own (it lets the reader know when a parent needs to help or supervise, such as when scissors are involved) and has question that the parent can use to further expand on projects. Also check this whole series, such as math play, arts and crafts from around the world, rainy day play, weather, shapes, etc. My son loves these activies. Plus for the price, you can't beat it.(...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I wondered about explaining the subtle differences too but these cards are great. Just review them with your child and the differences can be made clearer as they grow older. In the meantime the kids really enjoy them and are armed with knowledge when you take outdoor trips. I am really happy with this purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photographs
The nature cards are photographs of actual scenes. They are very colorful and depicts nature well. They are not like other flash cards that show only 1 aspect of something (sand for beach etc). There are a lot of visual information on each card. Depending on the age of the child, you can use the cards to explain a great deal about the world around them. My 8 month old likes looking at the colorful photographs, while my 3 year old and I have discussions about what is portrayed. She loves to arrange them according to some logic of the moment. She also uses them to tell stories. Great for the imagination.

4-0 out of 5 stars Long-time favorite
My twin 17 month olds just love these cards and have for several months now.My twins chew and bend these cards continuously, but the cards have held up very well.My 17 m/os can pick out the sun (for example) when I group a few of them together (how we play with them at this age). They love carrying them around, pointing at the pictures, and hearing me tell them what they are.My 5 y/o also likes these cards and I use them to teach her reading (I cover up the pictures and show her the words). Good investment! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My five year old enjoyed this book
We enjoy the "Let's - Read - & - Find - Out" series of books. This one is a good addition, explaining seeds on my five year old son's level of understanding . Something that many adult writers of childrens' science books sometimes aren't very good at getting across. It is in my child's library at school. 4-0 out of 5 stars Life Springing Forth.
This book should have been more appropriately titled HOW TO WATCH A SEED GROW. Instead of discussing the various stages of development and explaining what happens, the book is basically an extended science project explaining how students can watch a seed grow into a plant. The book talks about the different stages, but only discusses what the planted beans should look like in those stages, not really explaining what is happening or why. Nevertheless, the book does outline a good science project for younger children, but isn't much as a book to read to kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Kids First Science Book
This is one very good science book.If you would like to do a seed project then this is a good guide to lots of young peoples questions about plants. It has colorful illustrations about what is happening with yourproject. It is written in detail, but not like a boring high schoolscience textbook that goes on, and on, and on about one thing, giving everydetail that there is.So what I'm trying to sayis that this is a goodbook. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story!
This is one of our favorite books. My 2 and 3 year old love the various birds and noises they make (great learning tool), the repetition makes it easy to remember. The story is lots of fun.The kids get a big kick out of the ending too! After a few reads, we can basically recite the book and often re-tell the story to ourselves while driving in the car.I would highly recommend this book for any family with little "owls".

4-0 out of 5 stars a good starting point
This is a very well written and illustrated story about a young boy who encounters Vincent Van Gogh and befriends him.It is based on a true story. While it is well done and my children love the story, I was a little bit disappointed that it included only imitations of Van Gogh's paintings and not actual pictures of them.I felt that even though there is a sad element to this story, the author did an excellent job of making it suitable even for small children, and sparks their interest in learning more about his life and works. We will be using this book this year for our homeschooled kindergartner and preschooler, and I am sure that this will be a great starting point for further learning and discussions. I give this book four stars and highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars bringing van gogh to life
i used this book to teach an art project to pre-schoolers and it was perfect! they enjoyed the story very much and it made the portraits of Camille's family, which they had already seen in other lessons, come to life and at the end when they see the picture of "14 sunflowers" they became excited about creating their own sunflowers out of fimo clay. A beautiful book and a well written story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely and interest-provoking
This is simply one of the best books I ever got my daughter. When she was about 1-1/2 years old, we took her to a Van Gogh exhibition and she stared, absolutely transfixed, at "Wheat Field with Crows." So when I saw this book, it seemed like she would really enjoy it, and she has. Note that it is not an entirely happy story, true to Van Gogh's life, so it is maybe not for tiny kids. But even recomposed by Anholt, the paintings are still amazingly vivid and interesting, and led us on a web search to find more (http://www.vangoghgallery.com/ is the BEST spot!). If I could only have a few books to read to my daughter for the rest of her childhood, this would be on my list, and hers as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars But Where do Caterpillars Come From?

5-0 out of 5 stars Color,color,color!
As usual, Lois Ehlert stimulates and educates the young reader about the mysteries of caterpillars to butterflies. Not only are the colors absolutely stunning, she provides factual information about different species. This book was a fabulous preparation for my classroom of small children as they watched their own caterpillars prepare for their magical transformation!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life's Journey
Waiting for Wings is a picture book showing the life cycle of a butterfly. The story uses tantalizing pictures and simple words to explain how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. The book takes the reader through the stages of the caterpillar's life. Once the caterpillar has become a butterfly the story changes to how a butterfly lives its life. The illustrations pull the reader into this book. The print is large and easy to read for young reader. The text also rhymes for two pages at a time. As the caterpillar grows the pages become larger, until the butterfly hatches. As the butterfly begins its flight the pages are full size. The illustrations and page sizes are wonderful for young readers. This book also contains identification pages on butterflies and the flowers they eat.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Patch of Pleasure
I purchased The Pumpkin Patch a number of years ago and it is still one of my favorite fall books. The text is direct, going through the stages of pumpkin growth; from seed to harvest, for sale at the Pumpkin Patch, and carving into a jack o'lantern. The large, colorful photographs are a clear asset to the instructional value of the text. I now use this book every fall with primary (K through 3rd grade) students as we learn about pumpkins in the days before our own Pumpkin Patch field trip. It allows us to talk about sequencing (what happens first, next, etc.), how fruits grow from flowers, and the different varieties of pumpkins. The Pumpkin Patch is very educational for children (and adults!) old enough to understand the text and how the sequence of photographs relate to each other.

1-0 out of 5 stars Strange word choices; does not work as a board book
I understand the power of overcoming adversity, but as the seeds travel, one of the "drowns," one dies in the desert, one is eaten by a bird...I think it is a disturbing little book, actually. It certainly should never have been made into a board book. There are too many words on the page to keep the attention of a toddler or preschooler. The ending seems abrupt as well.I haven't been impressed with the Carle books I have read.

3-0 out of 5 stars not the best for intended age group
I think this book is fine, but not for the preschool crowd.I would use it with older children -- elementary age -- to discuss the life cycle of an annual, the role of the seasons, and the challenges of reproduction which must be overcome by all plants. The Tiny Seed introduces us to many of the hazards faced by seeds and seedlings as they attempt to grow (from falling in water and drowning, being eaten by birds or mice, being overshadowed by large weeds, being stepped on by children, and more) and shows how the ideal environment is a necessity. It covers the role of sunshine and rain, how the seed swells and bursts open, how the plant develops as it grows, and how it produces and disperses its seeds to carry on the next generation. It's not a book for small children, though, since its mostly non-fiction tone is dry, the phrases are stilted, and it doesn't read aloud well.I find it difficult to "cheer on" the tiny seed; where others see him as a hero facing difficult odds, I think the book is too grimly determined to be educational and becomes boring for the youngest child. If you want a book to introduce a unit on seed dispersal, this is the one.If you want to talk with your three year old about the cycle of the seasons, you'd be better off with the Spring/Summer/Autumn/Winter collection by Gerda Muller.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Looked Like Spilt Milk
This is a wonderful book that helps children explore the idea that clouds can look like anything; all it takes is an imagination. This book has the same pattern of words on each page, so young children can recite with the reader. This book is great for prediction. This is a wonderful book to read and then have your child tell what shapes they see in the clouds.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Apple Pick for Children
I purchased this book last fall for our kindergarten "apple and pumpkin" theme of learning. The short text and big, colorful pictures make this an excellent choice for 4 to 8 year olds. Yet, I was surprised by how much I learned from this book! This non-fiction text covers the growth of the apple tree and it's fruit with plenty of labels and a simple definition for each new word.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time passes as the Big Tree Watches
This is a wonderful book. It is the story of a maple tree inNew York state; how it began from a seed, grew up in the forestprimeval, survived the pioneer's axe to live in a family's yard, has provided shade and syrup to generations passing on its way to becoming the venerable giant it is now.Part science, part American history, all beautiful. My son has enjoyed this book since he was about 3 (he's reading it himself now at 7) and I'm buying extra copies as gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Big Tree Confusion
I came to Amazon, as I typically do, looking for something special.1,000 wods, hunh?Okay. One of my fondest childhood memories is of a book entitled The Big Tree.It was read to my 2nd grade class by a wonderfulold grandmotherly teacher...Mrs. Woods. This was at Wineteer ElementarySchool at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita Kansas in 1962.That bookliterally changed my life, in the sense that it alone initiated a loveaffair with reading that has lasted my entire life. The book was about thelife and times of a giant redwood tree in California...as I recall thestory spanned several hundred years.Clearly, it made a terrificimpression on me.I came here looking for this book.Instead I have foundBruce's book, which appears to be a similar story told from an oak tree'spoint of view.I can say this about that, considering the fact that I havenot read Bruce's book.If it is half a good as the book I recall, I wouldrecommend this story whole heartedly. If a book like this can reach yourgrade school child the way the redwood story affected me, it will be aninvestment in the future the likes of which you can only begin to imagine. Bruce, thank you for keeping the dream alive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It was really worth buying
I bought this book for my 6 &4 years old daughters, it is easy to read for the 6 years old who is just beginning to practice reading, the 4 years old enjoys listening to the storys she likes to watch on Disney channel. Moreover the book is almost inclusive of most of the famous and loved Disney films, the colorful pictures are very good and the storys are summed up in a good way for children to understand, it is also great for reading to the kids before sleeping as the storys are brief.
4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy editing of stories leaves out a lot
Honestly, I think I would pass this by if I hadn't received it as a gift for my little one.The editing of the stories is extensive to some degree, to the point where you don't really know the characters to which they refer. If you don't already know the stories, then I highly suggest getting the real story and let this collection pass by.It really isn't a collection of the popular stories as it alludes - just a very brief rendition of those stories. Not sure why the three litttle pigs was included in this collection either - not really a Disney classic. It's okay if you're wanting to read the selections of this book as a short bedtime story, but if you're wanting a library of classic Disney stories, buy them separately because you'll be very disappointed in this book.
