5-0 out of 5 stars What a darling book!
I purchased this book after reading the reviews posted here at Amazon and I am so glad that I did! What an imaginative story! It's pretty fun to think about what our snowmen actually do at night - maybe go out for a pizza, grab some cold chocolate, and just generally have a great time ice skating. The imagination in this book is quite wonderful and the illustrations are very cute.Highly recommend this book - you won't be disappointed! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Imaginative book for nature lovers
If you and your children love nature and the outdoors, give yourself a treat and read this book together. I read this with my 10 year olds, and all three of us loved it. There is enough adventure to spark a child's imagination, and the tale provides opportunities for teaching one's children about important conservation issues. The artwork is wonderful, and we had the poster which is included with the book matted and framed. My girls love to look at the poster, and discuss again the details of the story that are depicted in this wonderful artwork by Bev Doolittle. This is a book that your children will remember and return to again and again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Restoring the circle....
THE EARTH IS MY MOTHER is the tale of a girl named "Star" -- a spunky 11-year and a true heroine. EMM has been beautifully illustrated by Bev Doolittle--known for her "camouflage" Native American and wildlife artwork. Since millions of dollars from the proceeds of Ms. Doolittle's works have gone to support the National Wildlife Federation, you can imagine the major theme of this book is the preservation of the wilderness. The storyline is based on Ms. Doolittle's concept but the text was actually written by Elise Maclay, author of two books of poetry, "Approaching Autumn" and "Green Winter."EMM is a feast for the ear and the eye. 5-0 out of 5 stars adventure story for children who love nature
This is a beautifully written adventure story set in the Southwest which my son and daughter, ages 10 and 11, both loved. It made a terrific family 'read aloud' for all of us. Like most kids today, they are conservationistsand lovers of nature and Native American lore. The author artfully setsforth an important environmental issue, destruction of habitat, in anadventure-story format. The 11 year old heroine, Sarah, is brave anddelightful, wrestling not only with saving the earth but familydifficulties my kids empathized with. The illustrations by Bev Doolittle --'camoflague' art the kids loved to piece together -- are gorgeous.Weloved it! I'm ordering a few copies for friends -- it's a great summer readfor kids. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great science book
This entire series of books on animals, their habitats, life cycles, etc. are wonderful! I own 13 of them now. I use these with my first graders during our animal unit. Each book has fantastic pictures and drawings. The information is presented very well but also simply enough that primary aged students can grasp the concepts and find it fascinating. The books also enable themselves to be read in pieces if you want to skip something or focus on a certain area. I highly recommend books by Bobbie Kalman! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like a dream
I read my children to sleep with this book every night. They call it their dream book since they drift off to sleep with thoughts of sand and sea in their heads. The words draw beautiful pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boring!?I think not
The reviewer who found this book "boring" must not have much in the way of imagination. This was one of my favorite books as a child and I still remember it fondly (I'm 38).It doesn't matter if you haven't had experiences exactly like those of the children in the book. The writing and the illustrations make you feel as if you are there. You can practically smell the sea, hear the wind and rain, and the laughter of the kids at the beach. While drawing a vivid picture of a concrete time and place, the book also invokes a sense of timelessness, as well as of "deep time" and the ancient rythyms of nature.I think my favorite moment is when one of the girls stands in a forested area on a misty morning, her eyes closed, and listens to nature awakening around her.4-0 out of 5 stars Time keeps on slipping

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites to read
The paintings/illustrations in this book are classic Eric Carle and are actually on a bigger scale than many of his books. They are glorious and beatiful and in his completely unique style.
5-0 out of 5 stars 10 Stars for Eric Carle
This book is well written and well illustrated. I feel sorry for the children who will be steered away from this story because of closemindedness. The adults seem to really be the ones who are uncomfortable with the illustrations.
4-0 out of 5 stars A nice new spin on the religious creation stories
I'm not a huge fan of Eric Carle's work, nor of religiously-themed books written for small children... But this charming, colorful (and refreshingly nondenominational) 1992 picture book strikes a nice balance, and is one of Carle's simplest, most visually appealing children's books. In an interesting twist on the creation story, Carle casts the god-figure as an artist, first as an infant, asked to draw a star, then as a lad swiftly maturing into a teen, a young man, and finally into a wizened, flowing-beard style diety, who flies away into the heavens with the very stars he created, after having drawn man, woman, and the world they inhabit. One aspect of the book -- that someone was there to ask "The Artist" to draw all these things -- raises some interesting theological questions, but the central message of celebrating art and the world around is, is uncomplicated and welcome.Worth checking out, as long as you're not militantly agnostic or atheistic. ... This is a lovely story about the special love between a young girl and her dad. Their before bedtime ritual takes them on a short trip to the nearby lighthouse. The end of the day has come and so it is time to say goodnight. Written in rhyme, this story is a delight to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
This is a simple book to read through for younger children. Written by native Americans it is a "thanksgiving" book from their point of view, why native americans have always celebrated thanksgiving. It has no mention of pilgrams or not fully proven, overly romanticized stories as most thanksgivings are but simply a beautiful description of the season, the great harvest and respect for the world around them. A book of why the Native Americans Gave thanks during this beautiful season.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful book.
A simple but truly beautiful and wonderful book. To read with your children every morning and express thanks to the world, promoting connectedness and deep respect of all things. Teaching our children these important words will doubtlessly take us through these rough times and make the world as beautiful and peaceful as it was intended to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Way to Teach Gratitude
Anyone looking to teach the concept of Gratitude to children need look no further. "Giving Thanks" is the answer. The words, culled from the Thanksgiving Address (an ancient Iroquois message of gratitude still used today) simply, directly and eloquently give a roll-call of thanks from the Earth to the Sun and everything in-between. They evoke warm, inviting, even mythic images that I believe will delight most children. A personal, friendly face is put upon the elements that are usually looked at through the cold, impersonal microscope of science. The sun, moon, thunder and lightning, and even dead ancestors are transformed into Brother Sun, Grandmother Moon, Grandfather Thunder Beings and the Spirit Protectors, respectively. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Peaceful Holiday Tale
This lovely book is a favorite at any time of the year, though it centers around one family's Christmas Eve tradition. My kids have asked if we can start decorating a tree in the woods, too!The illustrations are gorgeous (Ted Rand is one of our favorites) and the writing makes you slow down and savor the unfolding of this simple, but sweet story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A winter tale
I'm an elementary ed. major and this book is also good to read to kids who don't celebrate Christmas because although the family decorates a tree there isn't any mention of a particular hoilday. The title even lends to this fact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neat Christmas Story About Family and Traditions
This is a neat story about a family's Christmas tradition.Every year, they troop out into the forrest to decorate their night tree, a living pine Christmas tree. The night tree is festooned with edible decorations. After the family enjoys the magic of the decorated tree, they depart, knowing that the friendly critters who inhabit the woods will enjoy the decorations as a Christmas time snack.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Choppy sentences with drab illustrations.
Short choppy sentences with one page in color and the next in black and white left me wishing this book was done differently.Loving nature, I wanted to really enjoy this story, but I didn't.There were facts thrown in haphazardly with thoughts and there was absolutely no reason for the black and white harsh transition every other page into color.I just didn't get the concept the illustrator was trying to portray.I did like that the pages were made out of paper that felt like it was recycled just for this tree story. And the introduction of, "Trees are very nice. They fill up the sky." was a nice way to start this book, and the ending of, "They wish they had one so they go home and plant a tree too." leaves you with a positive activity, but the rest of it was drab for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching kids to love nature
A great, easy read for kids. "A Tree is Nice" talks to the goodness of trees, while nuturing young minds to become future gardeners and environment friendly adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should plant a tree
A perfect book and a must-own for schools and families alike. This story dates from the 1950's and is a simple tale of all the things that are wonderful about trees.I could start quoting it but I'd quickly have the whole text in here which is probably illegal.Suffice it to say that any elementary school classroom which does not have this book is lacking. The entire list of what we use trees for: play forts, sticks to dig in the dirt with, houses for birds, escape route for cats, shade from the hot sun, windblocks for our homes... I'm surprised the Arbor Day Foundation doesn't give this book away for free instead of a dozen trees which are sure to die - it would certainly do better to promote its cause that way.The book ends with describing how to plant a tree of your own, as well as the pride you feel in watching it grow for years and telling everyone you know that "I planted that tree"; then "They wish they had one so they go home and plant a tree too."Okay, so I couldn't refrain from quoting it a little after all! This book demonstrates a real respect for nature and, by the way, it also won the Caldecott Medal.Of all the library books we got out this week, this is my must-buy and I'm going to place my Amazon order for it right now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great science book for children
An unusual science teacher takes her students from the classroom into the ocean - physically. The school bus she drives plunges right into the water and transforms, as needed, from bus into submarine, submersible, and surfboard so that her class can reach and explore every part of the ocean. The expedition starts at the continental shelf and moves through continental slope, ocean floor, deep-sea vents and a fringing coral reef. On their way, they children find themselves magically equipped with diving suits and they can now study plants, ocean water, animals and their habitats.
5-0 out of 5 stars 20,000 Leaks Under the Sea
At this point, Ms. Frizzle and her class have explored things like the waterworks, the many layers of the earth, the human body, and even outer space. So it's only natural that Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen would decide to lead their readers on an under-sea adventure."The Magic School Bus: On the Ocean Floor" is another top-notch collaboration by two people who show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true story of friendship
Farfallina and Marcel is a true story of friendship. It teaches us that even through natural changes in life we can remain friends. This is a favorite story of my 4 year old son who likes to hear it over and over again. The water color pictures are beautiful and add a soft warm feeling to the book. I believe it's message is timeless and we will enjoy reading it to our children for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite of everyone in our family
This wonderful, gentle story is a perfect end to a busy day. Our two ball-of-energy boys gladly climb into our laps at bedtime for another rereading of "Farfallina and Marcel." It's one of my husband's favorite bedtime stories to read aloud, and it always gives us all a warm, snuggly feeling (very conducive to quickly falling asleep!). This tale of enduring friendship and loyalty is enhanced by Keller's precise, yet accessible prose and the quiet beauty of her watercolor illustrations. Everyone from Papa to our kitties enjoys curling up on the bed together for this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Friendship!
I came across this gentle book while shopping for gifts for my daughter's 6th birthday. This is a book about friendship and that is a very important subject to kindergarteners.I felt the author approached the subject in a beautiful and touching way, showing how friendship can endure through the many changes that life will bring.I can't wait to read the book to my daughter.I plan on buying more copies to give to my friends, too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Winter Story
I am a children's book lover.I really enjoyed this book. The pictures are warm and friendly. The story is so creative & humorous.I really enjoy finding the hidden items on each page.It adds a whole new level to the book.My children seem to enjoy the story also. I would suggest everyone read this book and keep it with all the Christmas treasures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute but no replacement for the Christmas classics
Snowmen at Christmas is a cute book. The illustrations are creative and colorful.I found the text, in rhyme, trite and sounding a bit too much in format like "The Night Before Christmas."My 6-year old was not interested and my 3-year old was mildly curious about the stroyline.I would have rather borrowed from the library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbedtime book for the Christmas season!
We signed this book out from our local library and it has become a new Christmastime favorite. The story is simple and fun, and the illustrations are wonderful. The glowing colors of the night sky, Christmas lights twinkling on snow covered trees, the coaly grins of the snowmen are all just charming. Will have to check out the authors' previous book as well- ... Life in the wilderness has just become a lot thornier for young Sam Gribley. For the last two years he's been living in a hollowed-out tree in the Catskill Mountains, hunting and gathering his food supply and befriending the critters in his "neighborhood." Sam's peaceful existence is abruptly shattered when an environmental conservation officer confiscates his peregrine falcon, Frightful. To make matters worse, Sam's sister Alice, who has been living with him for the past year, has disappeared. It was a good book for boys who like the wilderness. Some of the parts were vary boring.I picked this book because it was a medium length.

2-0 out of 5 stars OTFSOTM Review
On the Far Side of the Mountain is about Sam Gribley, who lives on the Catskill Mountains. He eventually is also burdened with his sister living there, and must leave the safety of the mountain to save her with his friend Bando.
4-0 out of 5 stars Mountian of a book
On the Far Side of the Mountain is the second book in the series. It is about Sam Gribley and his adventures on the Catskill Mountains. In this book his family moves off the mountain because they could not farm the land. Sam's sister Alice convinces their parents to let her stay on the mountain with Sam. Sam dose not want her there but his dad says that she will probably be begging to leave in an hour. Alice is well adapted to living on the mountains and loves it there so she dose not tire of it. When Alice lives there thought she wants things that Sam has to build and make for her. Alice is doing well on the mountain and is almost living on her own. When some events happen Sam must leave the protection of his mountain home and explore new lands in order to save a life. What I liked about this book is that it is filled with action and adventure. I also liked his sister she was a great character in the book. What I didn't like about the book is that some on the decision that Sam makes I do not agree with. I know I said I liked Alice in this book but the spent the whole book talking about her and it was too much.
