This is the cutest book ever! I always enjoyed the Clifford books, especially this one. The illustrations are just adorable. I just loved how he was such a mischevious puppy!
5-0 out of 5 stars A True Classic
I approached Clifford's First Autumn without any expectations of greatness.Boy was I wrong! This book's deep plotline, masterful writing and intruiging characters make it a true masterpiece. The simple symbolism of the many leaf colors represents man's struggle with multiculturalism, with the moral being that we should jump together into mankinds big leaf pile. This is a true classic of literature shows the spirit of America! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book gives a great description that EVERYONE can understand about rain, thunder and lightning. We have tried in so many different ways to teach our daughter about this phenomena and when we read the book she realized that we were telling the truth!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of our boys' top picks over years
My two boys, now aged 3 and almost 5, have asked for this constantly over a period of two years. They put it in the top five the top of their favorite books list and we have a LOT of outstanding books. My older boyhas wowed several adults with his lectures on how lightening and thunderwork. I highly recommend the book/cassette combination. My husband and Ialso enjoy listening to it after many, many hearings. It is entertaining, soothing, interesting, and educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars All about trees
Solid intro to basic concepts regarding trees. I occasionally wished Gibbons would have chosen the more scientifically correct term than a common, but less specific word. Includes an identification guide for various trees and shows young naturalists how to make their own tree identification book (pressing leaves, leaf and bark rubbings, and drawings). Karen Woodworth Roman, Children's Science Book Review

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple yet appealing book about the life cycle of trees
Written and illustrated by Gail Gibbons, Tell Me, Tree: All About Trees For Kids is a simple yet appealing book about the life cycle of trees for beginning readers. The informative text is enhanced throughout with color illustrations teaching young people about the parts of the tree and how it grows, as well as how to identify some of the more common trees of North America. Tell Me, Tree is a very highly recommended and educational book of fun facts for grades 1 through 3. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book A La Mode
Movement, color, unique page formatting, and a mysterious blend of words and images launch the first few pages of this imaginative, exceptionally well-illustrated book for kids. Besides an abstract picture of a tree trunk with a caterpillar and a purple, turquoise, and white/translucent dragonfly, the unnamed narrator informs us: "This tree was here when we moved in."On the next half page insert, the caterpillar is further up the tree, and the narrator says, rather mysteriously, "Dad says it's a pie tree."Turn the last half-page insert, and small red dots with tiny black eyes-ladybugs-join the caterpillar on the tree trunk. There's another engaging "hook" in large letters:"I've never seen pies growing on trees.Wouldn't that be something?"

5-0 out of 5 stars The inspiring story of the River with the Pebbled Bottom
What I like most about Lynne Cherry's environmental history of the Nashua River is that it is not only the story of the death of a river, but also of its rival."River Ran Wild" begins thousands of years ago when Indian peoples first came through the Nash-a-way River Valley.Cherry tells of the history of the river, surrounding her text with smaller drawings representing the changing cultures of the various times depicted opposite full-page pictures. The two most telling pictures are basically "before" and "after" shots of the same scene: an aerial view of the Nashua River winding through a factory town where the river changes color from blue to green to brown as factories dump their waste into the water, and a final shot of the river restored to health today.Cherry, who has devoted her life to environmental issues, includes a timeline and an introduction that covers in more detail how the ecological death of this river came about, and the various community efforts and governmental laws that resulted in fish and game finally return to the Nashua. All too often book like this can only mourn the loss of another part of our environment, so it is nice to see something that that celebrates one of the all too few instances of success in getting back to what we once had.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is fantastic for third graders!
I used this book with my third grade class when they were studying theeffects of water pollution on a large body of water. They had alreadystudied Native Americans in second grade and this book just blended the twosubjects together. The step by step portrayal of man's harm to the NashuaRiver helped my children learn about how they were harming the ChesapeakeBay in Maryland.Lynne Cherry is a fantastic author and presents two greatsubjects that are highly interesting to children.Any teacher that teacheseitherNative Americans or water pollution should include this book intheir lessons!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the greatest books ever written.
This book was given to me at age 12. I am now 17 andit is still my favorite. I will never outgrow the beautifulpictures, or the very important lesson it teaches. Every page is expertly laid out, with exquisite paintings depicting the river and the era being discussed. The message of environmental conservation and protection is inspiring. Lynne Cherry makes this vital part of our existence understandable to young children, andeven adults, often the harder group to reach. I highly reccommend this book for anyone who wants their children to appreciate the worldaround them and learn that they can, and should, do their best tosave it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story!
My son's kindergarten teacher read this to them this week, and my son and I fell in love with it!A very different story for Halloween, and one that will have your child(ren) wanting to put THEIR jack-o-lantern in the garden instead of the trash, just to see what happens.Terrific story, beautiful illustrations - I'm here to buy several copies to give away as gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Circle of Life Kind of Story...
My 6 year old son picked this book himself at the library, probably for the colorful, textured drawings but was soon glued to the story of Tim and the pumpkin he named "Jack". The story follows Tim and Jack through a year of seasons and the many physical changes in "Jack" until Jack disintegrates. Later, Tim notices a tiny sprout and later, a whole crop of pumpkins grow! Tim gives them all away except one which he names "Jack" of course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Follows the Life Cycle of a Jack o Lantern with Feeling
This is a great little story, far removed from the frightful and cutie-pie ones that are so prevalent at Halloween. Pumpkin Jack is a jack-o-lantern who gradually collapses and dies after Halloween, as all do. We see the little boy through the seasons of his year, occasionally reminded of the old jack-0-lantern. In the spring, a tiny vine begins to grow where the old jack died. The vine, of course, grows pumpkins, which, in the fall, the boy gives away--all but one. Fine watercolor illustrations, which in some places are a bit rough, but the story more than makes up for them. This is what the death of nature in the autumn is all about, beautifully told, with a message of renewal in the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Soothing
Grandma's Purple Flowers is a tender, loving story of a child's attachment to her grandmother, who she loves to pick purple flowers for, and the closeness they share. They discuss the changing of seasons and how the leaves fall and flowers die-everything has its time. Then one night her grandmother dies. The child grieves, but soon realizes that when the purple flowers bloom they remind her of her grandmother. The illustration of the seasons is beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfull book to prepare child for death
I read this book at the library to my 3 daughters. It started conversation around the coming death of my mother, their grandmother. She is terminally ill with cancer and she has a short time here with us.This book helped my girls to see that even though it may hurt to not see their grandma again they can cherish the good memories they have of her.I would reccommend this book to anyone who wants to prepare a child for loss of a loved one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vibrant Illustrations!
Using vibrantly colored collages, author/illustrator Adjoa Burrowes (illustrator of "My Steps," a Parent Choice Award winner) offers youngreaders not only a warm intergenerational story about a young girl and hergrandma, but a look at how Hyacinth works her way through her grandma'sdeath. Enhanced with acrylics and watercolors, the three dimensionaleffect of the pictures will give readers the feeling of traveling alongwith Hyacinth as she goes through the park and down the hill to regularlyvisit her grandma."A big hug and a smile are always waiting" for her. She gives grandma purple flowers that she has picked along the way andgrandma offers her sweet corn muffins.Hyacinth enjoys the freedom ofmaking the journey through the park as much as she enjoys doing simpleactivities with grandma - baking and hair combing. While raking leaves,Hyacinth asks her grandma, "Why do leaves have to fall and die?"Grandmareplies, "Everything has its time." One winter day, Hyacinth visits hergrandma and finds her ill.Grandma eventually dies and the young girlcries and mourns her beloved grandparent all winter. She must find a wayto overcome her grief. In the spring, she finds a way to cope with herloss. In a youthful manner, Burrowes' illustrations match the mood shiftsof the story, from exuberant with smiling houses, to sorrowful with anempty park bench surrounded by dirty gray snow. There are many fancifuldetails in the illustrations as well as subtle ethnic details in the story. This is an important book about the natural life cycle and coping withdeath. It parallels the seasons and the growth cycle of plants.Burroweshandles this subject with confidence and with an updated feel by using anAfrican-American family. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great classic!
Although I did not read this book as a child, it is a wonderful classic and I see that many other parents loved it as children. It is a sweet story and my daughter loves reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Wait Till the Moon Is Full"
This book was one of my favorites as a child.I was delighted to find that it was available -- at bought four copies immediately to give to special children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful childhood memory to pass on
I have been looking for a copy of this book for years. While visiting my brother recently I discovered that he had the copy that we read over and over again when we were children. It's in poor shape, a testimony to the use it received. He wouldn't part with it, so I am so pleased to find it available again. I'm sure my 2-year old grandson will enjoy this sweet and gentle story as much as I did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Christmas book
I first heard this book while volunteering at my daugther's preschool.I loved it.The children enjoyed and I enjoyed the meaning of the book. I rushed out to get the book and it's been a favorite all year. You and your family will enjoy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars True Christmas story, Goregeous illustrations
This is the type of Christmas story that makes you remember what Christmas is suppose to be all about. The illustrations in this book are exquisite . The story is all about a tree that gets picked over every year when people come to choose a Christmas tree. The problem is the tree has been there for years and has grown too tall for anyone to use for a Christmas tree. This greatly upsets the tree and he begins to cry.All the forest animals who love the tree for all that he has provided for them see this and decide to do something to make the tree realize how much he is appreciated and loved by them. So when the tree is asleep , they come and decorate the tree in there own version of a Christmas tree. Very nicely done, smooth text, sure to be a Christmas regular once you have read it. The illustrations alone would make this book a wonderful edition to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story with a moral!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE FALL OF FREDDIE THE LEAF
THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK.I USED IT TWENTY YEARS AGO WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT AND THEN AGAIN IN THE RECENT PAST.IN BOTH CASES IT WAS USED AS PART OF FUNERAL SERVICES ON THE DEATH OFINFANT CHILDREN.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, helpful story for all ages
A family friend gave me this book over 10 years ago when my father suddenly passed away. While no book could possibly heal the pain or close the void that my father's death left in my life, I was able to find some comfort in this timeless story. Ten years later, I still pull it out once in awhile, and it makes me smile. I have given copies to many friends over the years who have lost loved ones. I hope it can bring comfort to you or your loved ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Children confronting the death of a parent or grandparent
25 years ago when my children were 4 and 6 years old, I bought this book when their father passed away.On May 21st, my youngest brother, an L.A. city firefighter took his own life, leaving a 7 year old son and a 10 year old daughter.I remembered the innocence of this book in relation to death and decided to purchase it for my niece and nephew. The older child read it to her younger sibling.Since the impact of the death of their father was something only the two of them could share, this private time was crucial to them. The book is excellent, ordering it was easy, and the shipping was more than satisfactory.Thank you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for toddlers!
Our son has had this book since he was about 19 months old, but he's just now becoming really interested in it a year later. This book is fantastic. The rhymes are a little awkward, but they hold a toddlers attention. The best part though, is that it introduces children to the works of one of the great masters! My son can now see a print of a Van Gogh (or tapestry, or whatever medium the piece is recreated in) and he'll run up to it and yell "Van Gogh!"It's a pretty spectacular thing to see, and what a wonderful gift for early learning!

5-0 out of 5 stars My six month old loves this series
This is the first time I've felt compelled to post a review, but my six month old son absolutely loves these books! The colors are so vibrant and the accompanying rhymes can be read different ways on different days - slowly, quickly, with a rap cadence, with a British accent. They're fun for him, and, by varying the way I read them, they remain fun for me as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Art
My daughter is 17 months old and loves this series of books. The artwork is representative of the original work and the words do a great job of telling a story for each picture in a descriptive way without "squashing creativity" for the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical Garden inspired my students
Anholt's lovely book about Monet is my favorite of the series about famous artists. He demystifies impressionism and actually inspires children to paint their own "magical gardens"!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ArtAppreceation for children
Fine art apprecation was a lost thing among adults let alone children, encouraging an understanding of art at a young age will encorage intrest in art in children and their caregivers alike. Help kids enjoy art and culture while reading a fun story. With this book, (and the others in the series) they introduce kids to the famous artworks of great painters throughout history while encoraging a childs imagination to be creative and tell a story with each picture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Toddlers
The Magical Garden of Claude Monet is a great way to expose young children to impressionist art.My son loved the story of Julie in Monet's garden.Julie is a young French girl who takes a train with her Mother to visit Monet's garden. As they arrive into the countryside, her dog runs away and is found in Monet's garden.Soon the painter and Julie become friends. The illustrations are bright and colorful. You almost feel as if you are inside one of Monet's paintings.Children will be captivated by the story as well as the beautiful pictures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Graeme Base is a genius!
Not only is the book cleverly written, the illustrations are exceptional!I stayed up for hours pouring over the pages.None of his books has yet to bore me.No matter how many times they're read, there is always something new to be discovered.GB is my FAVORITE children's picture book author!Extraordinary! This mystery aspect of this book will interest older children with more advanced thinking skills. But, as a book by itself it still is a fun adventure for kids of any age.

4-0 out of 5 stars Graeme Base
The Book I read was called The Sign of the Seahorse. This book was one of the most detailed picture books I have ever read. It is about fish that own a bar called the Seahorse and how some of them have to save the town from a villain and his thugs. In the book the bar owner's daughter falls in love with one of the heroes, and his son tries to fight the thugs. Will they be able to stop the villain before it's to late? You will have to read it to find out.I would recommend this book to a young child who enjoys adventure, fantasy, or likes reading about fish. This fishy tail was written by Graeme Base.-Jake

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sign of the Seahorse
The Sign Of The Seahorse is one of the best books I have ever read!!! I love the ocean and the discription of the scences and you never get confused about anything. You can really relate to the story even if you are not a fish. Everthing makes sense and it also shows that alot of people alwayswant something better, yet some are already happy with what they have. I would give anyone this book to read because it is just so well writen, the author is totally brillant. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This was an okay book. Too scary for me.
It was about a 12 year old boy and his best friend and baby brother. They pretend thatthe tornado is just not goning to happen but the weather channel says a tornado is going to hit ground. Dan and his best friend think thats it not going to happen but then the winds start to howl and it starts to rain and hail. Then the boys know they should have listened!Read it to see what happens to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!
This book is EXCELLENT, and not just for kids. And personally I think it's one of the scariest books I've ever read.Basically a 12 year old boy is home alone ona stormy night with his best friend and his baby brother when a twister hits, completely destroying their house and their entire neighborhood.
