Editorial Review

When 11-year-old Marty Preston chances upon a mistreated beagle pup in his hometown of Friendly, West Virginia, he is not prepared for the ethical questions he has to face. Should he return the dog to its owner, only to have the animal abused again? Should he tell his parents? Should he steal food to help the poor creature? Marty's efforts to cope with these questions provides the moral backbone for this story, which is presented in a language and manner that will be understood by third- and fourth-grade readers. The heart and beauty of this 1992 Newbery Medal winner lies in lessons children will take away with them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Deserved Newbery Winner,But Some Reservations
Shiloh is the winner of the 1992 Newbery Medal, and it tells the story of Marty Preston, an 11-year-old boy, and his efforts to rescue a mistreated beagle, Shiloh. Though Marty believes Shiloh came to him for help, his father makes it clear that he must not interfere in their neighbor's business, even if that neighbor is Judd Travers, a thoroughly unlikable man who abuses his dogs. When Shiloh comes to him a second time though, Marty has to choose between his love for Shiloh or obedience to his father. Though I had to do some minor editing while reading aloud to my preschool-aged children, this is a very engaging story full of struggle, devotion, and suspense that had my son (and hubby) begging for more.Naylor expertly reeled us in from the first chapter as we got wrapped up in Marty's concern for Shiloh and she kept us expectantly turning the pages to find out what would happen next.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Eleven-year-old Marty lives with his parents and two younger sisters just above Friendly, West Virginia. Marty finds a dog and he is convinced that the dog is abused by its owner. He wants to keep Shiloh, but he has to strike a deal with Shiloh's owner, Judd Travers.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Beagle story review by Zachary in AK
Shiloh is one of the first books that I read and finished. Before reading it, I didn't really like to read. But after reading it, I wanted the rest of the series because I just had to know what happend next.

I thought all the books were sad espectially this one. judd is a rude selfish and absolutely unkind resident. I just feel so bad about what people in the book had to go through. he steels and lies and never bothers to help anyone! if you like the first book you'll like all of them! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loved it
I bought the book because my 4-year-old son had been on the receiving end of some of the unfriendly behaviors that are the basis of the book. My son loves the book. Aside from the fact that he gets the author's premise (reasoning rather than reacting), he just genuinely enjoys it. He laughs out loud at some of the situations in the book. It didn't trigger the meaningful discussion I'd hoped we'd have about bullies (unbridled parental optimism on my part there!), but it's made for a lot of fun bedtime reads.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Sequel, Some Reservations
Shiloh Season is the second book in the Shiloh Trilogy. In this ongoing saga, 11-year-old Marty must face some of the consequences of past decisions, particularly the secret of how he managed to "buy" his beagle Shiloh from Judd Travers, his previous owner. Just when we thought Marty's fears about Shiloh's well-being were over, Judd begins to drink heavily and is displaying erratic behavior which causes Marty to once again fear for Shiloh's safety, as well as his own. Marty faces some difficult decisions again, as well as showing maturity as he wrestles with needing to protect Shiloh and wanting to find out if it's possible to teach kindness to someone who has never known it.

3-0 out of 5 stars one very sharp mother
I have purchased all the books in this series for children in my family.I have the habit of readingthe books I buy for the kids first so I get no surprises.Texas Jake and his club could be any group of children, oops cats, any where. The characters of the cats are well deefined by this volume, but it is not necessary to read the previous novels to understand who is who or whats going on. TJ is a bully who finally meets his match in Marco and Polo's street wise mother. He is head of the "Club of Mysteries." Together they ponder mysteries that they encounter in their everyday lives. But Jake has a habit of assigning hazardous mysteries to the young brothers Marco and Polo to solve. The timely appearence of their mother saves them from harm and caused Texas Jake no end of jealousy and fear of losing his place as leader of the cats.
5-0 out of 5 stars Polo Finds His Mother
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor brings us the fourth gift in her series on the doings of the cat brothers Marco and Polo, and, once again, manages to write a children's book that adults can enjoy. This one is particularly poignant because Polo has spent the first three volumes in the series wistfully wishing he could see his mother again. But, when Mom, a veteran alley cat named Geraldine, finally shows up one day she's not exactly what Polo was expecting.Geraldine has quite an impact upon the Club of Mysteries, of which Marco and Polo are members, managing to go toe-to-toe with the hardscrabble Texas Jake. But, in the end, Polo, of course, winds up finding the motherly affection he has so long desired.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit too mature
I thought this Alice book was a bit too mature for the age level of the readers, and not nearly as much fun to read as The Grooming of Alice. Plus it seemed more preachy than entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a teenager or preteen girl
Well, I read a lot of Alice books, and all of them are great. I like this book a lot. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor wrote Alice 's life as a eighth grader, with all the changes come to her, it' s very excited book. It tell the real life of a teenager girl, and it also talk a lot about these question that teenager or preteen girls may have but never being answered. It's like a guild for the teenager or preteen girl of what is like to be 14, and a eighth grader.5-0 out of 5 stars Alice on the outside
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor(author) really describes what it is like to be a teenage girl. Naylor puts all of the problems of being a teenager together, your date getting ill for a big dance, your dad humiliating you by interupting the most intense kiss you have ever had, and not having a mother to talk to about stuff you need a girl to talk to about. In this story all of that happens to Alice when her life gets more complicated then ever. This hilarious must-read will spark the interest of any Jr.High girl. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alice in Blunderland
Alice in Bluderland by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a marvelous book about a girl named Alice that lives with her brother and father. She doesn't have a mom because her mom died when she was a little girl. Imagine how it would feel like to live without a mom! This book made me want to read more and more. If you think this book sounds boring, you are totally wrong! If you want to know more about the book you have to read it yourself. I would recommend this book to anyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars More Early Alice Fun
In this second prequel to the Alice series, Alice is entering the fourth grade. She has a man teacher for the first time, and is now friends with the Terrible Triplets. Lester lies to her more and she, of course, believes him, which leads to some funny happenings. She also forms the "Secret Six," gets snowed in her own snow cave, and no matter how she tries to help Lester, they just can't seem to get along. This book does, however, end on a good note. I would highly recommend this prequel, along with "Starting With Alice" to any young girl, whether she's heard of Alice or not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read
Since I first picked up this book, to the time I put it down- I loved it! It was fantastic and wonderful. My older sister still loves these books too, so this is a read for anyone older than 9-12 years old, except it might be a little bit of an easy read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mystery and Adventure with a Twist of Humor!!!
This 2004 winner of an Edgar Award for Best Juvenile Literature certainly will leave everyone talking! In Naylor's book of the Besseldorf mystery series, Bernie Magruder finds himself in the middle of strange happenings again! Not only are the bells in the belfry tower are ringing around the clock, someone has brought terror to the town by displaying posters warning of the invasion of Indiana Aztec Bats-a bat species NO ONE has heard of before. This has everyone in a frenzy and it is up to Bernie to find out what is going on.This book is perfect for the upcoming Halloween season, and if you like mystery and adventure with a twist of humor, you won't want to miss this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is sure to entertain any reader.
Bernie Magruder's life should be ordinary and normal, yet it isn't. For one thing, strange and dangerous bats from South America are said to be flying towards his town and everyone is scared stiff at the very idea of bats moving in. Then there is the problem of the bells, the church bells. Every hour they clang out, "Abide with me," and the racket is beginning to have a very negative effect on the people of Middleburg. Some people want to turn off the bells, but some insist that they must continue their hourly cacophony.Read more

Gordon and his family are going on a camping trip. They can't drive back to the campsite, so they have to hike up the mountian a couple of miles. Their parents might have to leave Doug and Gordon to cammpp for a few days, because their mother's brother is sick. The family hikes up the mountian to the moutian to a place Gordon likes to spend his time. They came across a ridge that is only about 10ins wide. Doug is scared to go across because he doesnt want to fall. They finally got across after about 20 minutes. They hiked for about 40 more minutes until they got to the pic-nic spot. On the way back down the mountian crossing the ridge Doug freezes in the middle of crossing. Gordon is griping at Doug to get a move on, when his dad walks back across to help Doug across. When they got back to the campsite there was a ranger waiting for them to tell them some bbad news about thier uncle had died. Gordon's mom and dad left right away and left the boys for a few days to camp while they went to the funeral.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outrageosly Alice
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a wonderful Author. I am a big fan of the Alice series and have read the book. Alice as always is a loving, smart and caring person. I love to watch Alice grow up in to a teenager. Alice wants to OUTRAGEOUS!! Pamela, her friend dyes her hair green and makes spikes. The fazes that Alice goes through is fun to watch, but it is not like watching. You feel like you are there in thr group with Pamela, Elizabeth because of the great way Naylor writes! Go on Writing Naylor!

Alice is very different in this book. She does not think and is weird. I think if you want a good book, read another alice book. Or Harry Potter. Alece wears her hair in green spikes, and disobeys her father. If you want a good book, DO NOTI repeat DO NOT read this book.

This is a very good book because it has a lot of description of the exciting adventures of Marco and Polo.I loved this book so much that I'm going to buy the sequel.A.J.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great and funny book
I remember I read this book almost 10 years ago. It is surprisingly wry, especially the beginning of the book, which chronicles Polo's anxiety. The art is great, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT FOR YOUR CHILD
Parents, this book contains HIGHLY INAPPROPRIATE graphic sex content. And the School Library Journal says this book is for grades 4-6??? Not in my house. My daughter was distressed after reading the explicit dialogue. Unnecessary, classless and a cheap shot, Ms. Naylor.Shame on you.

Let me start by saying that in NO way am I a prude and I don't want my daughter growing up repressed. I want other parents to be aware, however, of some of the more graphic content in this book. My daughter, who is 9 and in the 4th grade looked kind of freaked out when she was reading a chapter of this book. She had read the 2
