5-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle ofyour Child's Birth will Stir Your World
I know that some reviewers feel that this book is exaggerated, unrealistic and that it gives a false perception to children that they are more special than they actually are, but you know what? I don't care. I read the good and bad reviews before ordering it and decided to go ahead anyway. I'm glad I did! The coming of my child may not have stirred anyone else's world but it sure stirred my husband's and mine. When I looked into his beautiful little eyes mine couldn't stop running, and when his little face touched my cheek my heart skipped a beat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, true and spiritual
On the day you were born, the universe rose up to greet you. Share the awe and wonder of life with your precious one. A simple expression of profound truth. A beautiful birthday gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
I have given this book to many new parents, and with all due respect to the reviewer below, not one has observed that it wasn't realistic. This book is poetry, not geography, not climatology, not anthropology.POETRY...And what's wrong with the idea of a super-happy planet rejoicing at the birth of every new baby? That's how it should be.I applaud the author for dreaming big. This gift will be well received.Don't hesitate. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Very Sweet But Difficult to Act out
I love the illustrations, I love the text, I just love this book. But. But I want to kiss my daughter in all of those sweet places while I am reading her the book and I can't because I have to hold the book in one hand and my daughter in the other and become a contortionist to kiss her bellybutton. And I wouldn't be able to do all of the kissing AND reading while my daughter is on the changing table. I guess I'll have to wait until she's in a big-girl bed. So it's not the author's fault, it's just that the book is better for, say, 18 months and up.

Book arrived with pop up pages stuck together. When my toddler tried to look under the pop up the page ripped because they were stuck together.Story is cute and has helped my son to stop biting and kiss instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Soon to be Big Brothers!
My son is just barely 6 and will be a big brother in about 3 weeks.I got this book to help prepare him for the arrival of his baby sister and it was a great purchase. It has helped him understand that the baby will be pretty helpless for a while, and that he can help with the baby.It also talks about how great it is to be the "big kid". It is a simple book that doesn't have a lot of pages. It would definitely be appropriate for younger children.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute -- not memorable.
Great pictures. Just an average book. It is written from the point of view of once the baby is home. At any rate, it helps get your child ready for the coming arrival.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great teaching tool!
My 21-month-old son loved this book while I was pregnant. When the baby was born, he quoted the book to us many times, going over and over what babies can and cannot do. "Can't walk, can't talk, can't play toys...can drink milk, can sleep, can cry."I think it really helped him with a difficult adjustment, and gave him the reassurance that Mommy and Daddy love him still, even though there was a new baby to love, too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good for families who are adopting
My husband and I are adopting a baby boy. I have been trying to find a 'Big Sister' book for our daughter, but so many of them are about mom being pregnant and giving birth to the new sibling. Thisbook is the only one I have seen that is suitable for both situations (adoption or giving birth). The story itself is simple, but very sweet and reassuring for the older child. My daughter absolutely loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite of 2-yr-old big sister
Our daughter was given this book a few months before her baby sister arrived. She liked it alot pre-sis and still requests it now that li'l sis is here. Upon receiving it, I didn't think much of it (not a "cool", super-aesthetically pleasing cover), but my daughter really liked it.The book always refers to "our baby" so that it works expecting boy or girl.I really appreciated the intro to what baby will be like - my daughter thus was able to enthusiastically spout some facts (slightly altered/added by us) about baby before she arrived - "Baby cry alot.Baby poop alot.Baby sleep in crib."As for the book baby being bottle-fed, I just told our daughter that our baby would nurse (fortunately we had friends that were nursing so she could see what it was versus me explaining it ;). Overall - I'm ordering the book for my sister-in-law who's expecting her second.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way too mainstream.
My mother bought this book for my daughter, and I absolutely detested in.My daughter was confused as well, as to why everything was "wrong," especially with the bottlefeeding.I know most women give up quickly on breastfeeding, but couldn't the author even pretend that some women breastfeed? And of course the baby is always in a stroller or bouncy seat, sleeps in a crib, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable book!
Poor little birdie came into this world and his mother was out getting him his first meal. He goes through a series of, "Are you my mother?" to planes, cows, dogs, until he almost gives up. As this book unravels, you cheer on the birdie while he goes through his wonders of who he feels a sense of belonging to. P.D.Eastman uses repitition and adds easy drawings to perfect a child's love and want to hear this book OVER AND OVER again. One of the first books I learned to read by and still own the same raggedy copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you my favorite book?
Our Grand daughter acts out this entire book with dramatic embellishments and subtle interpretation. It is the most interactive book a youngster from 6 months on can love and enjoy forever.

1-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book as a child...but it's really inappropriate now!
First, let me say that I learned to read from this book. When I was a kid I knew all the words and I loved it! But then again, I didn't know any better, and frankly, neither did my mom and dad. I was lucky in that the book applied to me: I looked like my mom and dad and therefore the message of the book, that your mother is the one who looks most like you, was seemingly harmless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely In the Top 5 of All Children's Books
Almost everyone else has said it already--this is as good a book as you can read to your kids. Not, contrary to what an isolated review suggested, stilted at all.Just beautifully evocative of a family living complete and joyful lives, with their ties to the land still unbroken.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching, beautiful, full of love
I love this book!I bought this book for my son (then 3) when I was expecting my daughter.Admittedly, this is MY favorite book.My son would much rather read something silly than poignant. But this book is GORGEOUS!The illustrations are achingly beautiful. The love in this multigenerational family leaps off the page. There is a home birth, love of the land/ nature/ farming, and sibling love. The boy in the story is taught by his mother, father, grandfather and grandmother about "all the places to love."The story closes with him teaching these things to his new sister.Every once in a while, my son asks me to choose the books I like best for our reading and I always choose this one.Don't get me wrong, he likes it too (he's now 5) he just doesn't usually choose it.You won't regret buying this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passing on the things we love
I am not only a Book junkie, I am a grandma who wants to pass on the Passion. I fell in love with this book not only because I grew up in rural Michigan, on a dairy farm, with my grandparents up the road. But because this book captures the love and family bond that I want to pass to my grandchildren. Mike Wimmer did an exceptional job of bringing this lovely story to life. I Dare youto read this out loud to any child you love .. and not shed a tear! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Prepare an Older Sibling!
I bought this book for a friend that's pregnant and has a little boy that will be 3 when new baby comes.I looked thru the book when I got it and loved the idea of no words. This way they can fit their wording into their lifestyle that best fits them. They can put in their own names and family names and all with this book along with gender.I love the whole book especially the end where the parents along with the bigger sibling tuck the baby into bed. Then, the parents have their night time reading with the bigger sibling who can stay up later! In my house, that is definitely how it works!!It makes my 4 year old feel big and prevents jealousy!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
And so does my two-year old son!It shows all the things that will happen with the baby and his big brother (my chosen genders). It even shows mom nursing which is a very big part of newborn life and I'm glad the author addresses it!And dad changes diapers too.I really like both of the books in this series and we got them both. They are favorites in this house!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 17 month-old loves this book, and so do I
My daughter particularly enjoys looking at books with pictures but no words right now: I tell the story and we discuss the pictures. She brings me this book and says, "Baby!"She really enjoys pointing to the baby and pointing out other objects in each picture (bunny, ball, snake doll, frog doll, bathtub, duck, etc.)

Thirteen-year-old Susanna (Sissy to her family) hasn't had much luck with the month of December. When she was six, her dad died in a horrible accident at work. At eight, her mother was diagnosed with a debilitating arthritis. And most recently, her spirited older sister, Briana, decides to run off to Los Angeles with her boyfriend. So this year's December is a depressing one as well. Briana sends postcards at first, but all too soon, there's no word at all. Sissy depends on her best friends, Melody and Stu, to help her through the lonely days of missing her sister, and practicing her flute helps pass the time as well. Somehow, life goes on.

This is a wonderful story with delightful illustrations about a young boy who is feeling displaced because he has a baby sister on the way.He is upset to see his old layette painted pink for baby Susie and his infant toys passed down to her.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of Ezra Jack Keats Best Books
I don't know what ken32 is talking about but Peter's Chair has nothing to do with gender difference. It is about a boy, Peter, who is disgruntled at the change that is occuring around the house for his new baby sister Susie. Peter sees that his baby items are being painted over in pink, which is the color that will identify if the baby is going to be a girl. Babies don't care what color their furniture is.
5-0 out of 5 stars We Loved This Story!
This story is about Peter who has a new baby sister. He is very jealous and doesn't want to share his things. Peter finally gives her his old chair that is too small for him. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
My 15 month old loves it, the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 because the flaps can be a bit hard to lift.My son loves all of Karen Katz's books, this one is really good for the younger set!

1-0 out of 5 stars Flaps rip too easily!
Though the illustrations are cute and the content is fine, these othersized and lightweight flaps rip VERY easily. We've not even had them 1 month and the book is in poor condition from regular use that other flap books do fine. Cannot recommend this one! We are very disappointed.

I love Karen Katz's other books but was a bit disappointed with this one.I'm not a big fan of teaching baby talk so I find this book to be of little value."What does the busy baby say?Uh-oh."Other than the large print, my baby does not find this particular book as interesting as the other ones.WHERE IS BABY'S MOMMY? is a lot better than this one. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Convoluted
I bought this book soon after we adopted our daughter.I found the writing style to be convoluted and precocious, much like the way children speak in contemporary movies (adult words from a child's mouth).Sorry, not a fan.We are still looking for a book that addresses an open, domestic adoption that can speak to children, not adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!!
Our son is adopted and we absolutely love this book.I agree with what everyone has said! This book also has given me ideas on how to word a little book with his own story in it.We will definately buy this book for anyone that we know who is adopting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tell Me Again About...
Awesome!I love the stor, and it has been a great intro for family, cousins and friends that are not sure how to address our newly adopted infant. We have been able to take the lead in how we tell, share and react to the situation as he grows.

ForRose Lewis, the journey to motherhood begins with a letter to Chinese officials, asking if she can adopt from the "big room with lots of other babies." This book is a must for parents adopting from China and a must to read to their daughters as they get old enough to understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must for single adopters
A lovely book about the adoption of a little girl from china by a single female adopter.Nice pictures and an easy way to make the adoption story part of 'happy bed time stories'.The words are those you would probably use to discuss where an adopted child came from if your daughter asked you. ... This book was great! I gave it 4 starz cuz i wished it was longer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I simply loved this book because of its wonderful writing and tender handling of a delicate subject. The story tells a tale of a young man raising a child and tells the story in a loving way. I really enjoyed reading the story and the way it was told. Johnson really seems to empathize with "children having children" and gives the reader a positive role model as a young boy learns what it is to be a father. She writes beautifully as she tells the tale and the tale is a very good one. I highly recommend this book to middle school children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary Book for Toddlers
Many people think that this book, and the topic of sex and sexuality, should be avoided until the child asks about it.They hope such questions will arise around puberty.YOU SHOULD TEACH YOUR KIDS ABOUT SEX AND THEIR BODIES WHEN THEY'RE OLD ENOUGH TO WALK AND INTERACT WITH OTHER HUMANS.Why?Because if you wait until puberty to talk about "parts" and "making love", kissing, etc., you're leaving thirteen years during which your child can and --10%+ for young boys and 20%+ for young girls--will get sexually abused by somebody who takes advantage of the fact that they don't know any better.
5-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate
I first heard about this book on the news. I think it is an appropriate "tool" in aiding your children "over time". At different ages it will be extremely useful, we do not plan to go over the whole book at one time with our daughter, but at the different ages she advances to. I think its great to use correct names for body parts, we should not be ashamed to do so. And its great to understand how the body works. I was never taught about ovaries and thought I was dieing when I had my first period. No one ever taught me about sex which is why I had sex at 16, people who teach their children in advance and at appropriate ages will instill in them important knowledge and give this the upper hand vrs. other children who's parents aren't telling them anything! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonerful
I bought this book for my daughter, Morgann-3, since we are having a new baby.We have read it over and over and over. She never fails to ask a new question everytime we read it.It is a wonderful book to get ready for a new baby and how God works his wonderful power. The only thing is now she wants two babies instead of one!:)

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I bought this thinking it would be a good book for making the first child feel special once there was a second child. While I love God gave us you, this story is a bit confusing mathwise as it is God gave us two yet they end up having twins so it is really God gave us three. Unless you know you are having twins don't bother. Too confusing for the age group it is intended for. For a good book on the same theme with less confusion try "All my favorites." There are three bears in that one but it makes sense. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for babies
I bought the book to introduce my 10-month old son to the idea that he was going to have a new brother soon. He loves touching the pictures of babies, and now I can't get him to stop touching his brother's face!
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
Both of my boys have really enjoyed this book.I think partly because it IS small and concise. I love the different types of pictures included. The first one is a child's drawing, others are pieces of art work and even cartoon like drawings.Great diversity!I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking to purchase a good board book for a child.

2-0 out of 5 stars too late or too early
I like the When to expect series for adults and that is why I have decided to buy this book. When I purchased it my daughter was 3 and my baby son 2 months. Many of the items in the book we have already explained to her on the day the baby came home from the hospital. The stories there are also too long for the toddlers attention.

3-0 out of 5 stars WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN BABY COMES HOME
THIS BOOK WAS A LITTLE TOO OLD FOR MY TODDLER GRANDSON TO UNDERSTAND. I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE DONE IN A YOUNGER VERSION OF BABY WILL CRY AND YOU WILL SEE MOMMY AND DADDY PICK IT UP AND FEED OR CHANGE IT AND YOU CAN HELP, ETC. IT WAS TOO TECHNICAL TO ENJOY FOR A TODDLER.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information!
I got this book for my 3 year old and I think it is great! It gives a lot of really good information that is on his level and I think it will really help a lot after I have the baby and bring her home. It is really helpful in preparing him for the changes that are about to happen and get us all talking about what we can expect.I am really glad that I ordered this book!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars At first good, but then.....
At first the book is good. After that the book gets a little dumb.I mean c'mon at frist she deosn't like him but when their cousin talks sqwot about him she tries to defend him and make her say ''Julluis is the baby of the world''.Witch was really dumb and odd. Also it uses unkind words like ''hate''.Get Chester's Way instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO more Julius!!!
"Julius is the baby of the world." Everyone loved the new baby in the house except for Lilly. It is hard when a new person takes away the attention that you are used to having. This is how Lilly felt towards her new brother. Throughout the book, Lilly tortures her brother by trying to get rid of him and calling him names. Her parents explain to her that he is going to be around forever and Lilly is unhappy. Lilly is determined to be the queen of the house and not get to know Julius. Not until a party that Lilly's parents through for Julius does Lilly have a change of heart. When her cousin Garland decideds that Julius is not great, Lilly stands up for her baby brother. This story has a happy ending and an experience that many of us have gone through. Once again, Kevin Henkes gives us another mouse book filled with emotion and color in every character and every page.

My 4 year old asked to buy this with her allowance. We'd checked it out previously from the library. She has a love/hate thing going with her almost 2 year old brother and she really relates to Lilly. I love that they learn to get along at the end! As a first grade teacher, I've read many Kevin Henkes books and love them. ... Read more
