5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter and I never got tired of reading this book
When she was young, this was one of my favorite books that I read to my daughter. I never got tired of telling her how great she would be when she got older. She also loved hearing it, the rhythm of the words never failed to keep her attention. I read her the entire collection of Dr. Seuss books in the local public library, and this was without question one of her three favorites. As I watch her go through life, I can't help but believe that some of the optimism for success that she possesses is a residual of hearing the words in this book.

Editorial Review

This timeless Dr. Seuss classic was first published in 1960, and has been delighting readers ever since. Sam-I-am is as persistent as a telemarketer, changing as many variables as possible in the hopes of convincing the nameless skeptic that green eggs and ham are a delicacy to be savored. He tries every manner of presentation with this "nouveau cuisine"--in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, with a goat, on a boat--to no avail. Then finally, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Children's Book
The book of green eggs and ham teaches us all a valued lesson on never judgeing a book by it's cover. Even though the main character tries to convince himself of not trying green eggs and ham, when he finally does he actually really likes it. This being a perfect example of not being prejudice.

I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

This is a spectacular ending to a fabulous trilogy. The plot and characters provoke questions on the importance of friendship and physical power. Tally Youngblood has undergone her second operation: she is now a fierce looking special who keeps Uglyville and New Pretty Town in line. What she used to call bubbly is now icy, and she is endowed with lighting-fast reflexes and superhuman strength. Tally soon discovers that the lesion curing pills have gone in to mass production, and are being handed out all over the city. Her special circumstances operation makes her believe that this is horrible, and that it is something to stop. On a trip back from crashing a pill-distributing party in Uglyville, she forces Shay to take her to Zane, who she has not entirely forgotten. They see that he is now cured, though he still feels the aftereffects of their pill-taking mishap, and that the Crims are now up to more serious tricks than crossing the borders on hoverboards. When he and some others of their old clique go on a journey to the New Smoke, Tally tracks behind them and in doing so disobeys orders from Shay. When she gets to The New Smoke, after a long time of struggling to understand how the Crims' minds are working, she gets a big surprise. During her time there she takes some heart-crushing blows, and learns in the end that specials really can cry. This is a remarkable book that leaves you to contemplate Tally's character and her strength- mentally and physically. It has a great ending, with an unexpected story twist that leaves you wondering whether she will ever live happily ever after. Read this if at all possible, and the other two in this trilogy along with it!

Editorial Review

Chester Raccoon doesn't want to go to school--he wants to stay home with his mother. She assures him that he'll love school--with its promise of new friends, new toys, and new books. Even better, she has a special secret that's been in the family for years--the Kissing Hand. This secret, she tells him, will make school seem as cozy as home. She takes her son's hand, spreads his tiny fingers into a fan and kisses his palm--smack dab in the middle: "Chester felt his mother's kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart." Whenever he feels lonely at school, all he has to do is press his hand to his cheek to feel the warmth of his mother's kiss. Chester is so pleased with his Kissing Hand that he--in a genuinely touching moment--gives his mom a Kissing Hand, too, to comfort her when he is away. Audrey Penn's Read more

I cry every time I read this one.We love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal Book
I'm a 24 year old soon-to-be married woman. When my parents moved me into my college dorm room, they left little presents wrapped up in all of the boxes I had to unpack. As you can imagine, once they left I was eager to get situated and began unpacking boxes and filling drawers one-by-one.One of the little presents I came across was this book.Of course, I wasted no time reading it, and soon found myself with tears streaming down my face.I was on my own for the first time, but I knew I knew I wasn't alone; nor was I ever far from my parent's love.It brings tears to my eyes just remembering how touched I was reading that for the first time. This is a fantasic book for everyone- whether you're 5 years old and starting kindergarten for the first time, or 18 and in college.

This is one of my favorite books. The story of little Chester the raccoon, his fear of going away to school, and how his mom gives him a kissing hand so he'll know her love is with him is a priceless story. I've read it to my son and daughter often over the last few years.

Of all the books I have read in school (required and for pleasure) the one book that I remember reading and consider to be trademark of my youth was How to Eat Fried Worms.

How To Eat Fried Worms?! Ewww!! Doesn't that sound disgusting! This was a great book that was very interseting and humorous. This book is about a boy who is dared to eat worms for a certain amount of money. Some of his friends who dared him to eat the worms took him to a carnival and tried to brain-wash him. If they got him to forget about the worms before 12'o clockhe would have to pay his friends money for not doing it. the boy comes home and his mom wakes him up and says ''Dont you have to eat two worms?'' The boy autimatIcally ran down into the back yard and ate two worms before 12'o clock. So the story goes on very adventureous. I reccomend this book because it is fun, exciting, mysterious, and awesome! That is why you should read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PRETTIES
This book is just as exceptional as its predecessor, with thought-stirring ideas and perfectly placed plot twists to keep you reading until the last page is done. Now that Tally Youngblood is a pretty, she is living the high life with an avalanche of parties to attend; the hardest decision on her mind is what to wear to a costume party. Then a mysteriously familiar person gives her directions to a pouch containing something seemingly important. It takes all the wit her fuzzily pretty mind can manage to get it. When she does, she finds a letter written to herself from back when she was ugly. Along with it, she finds the cure described to her while with Maddy and David. In a last second decision, she and her newly-found boyfriend Zane split the pills. They both seem pretty much clear minded, even when Zane gets some headaches every few mornings. But when they escape to the New Smoke, Tally learns that something went terribly wrong. Another must-read with a cliff-hanger ending. Left me waiting in suspence for the final part in the trilogy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretties School Review
When a random boy comes up to Tally Youngblood and hands her a note, she thinks that he is crazy. Tally Youngblood is your average pretty, going to parties, getting drunk, and not thinking more ahead than the next form of entertainment. See, in Tally's town when you turn sixteen you receive an operation that turns you from an ugly(normal person) to a mindless pretty. While Tally was still an Ugly, she was at a rebel camp called New Smoke that had figured out the operation ad was trying to spread the word about brain lesions you develop after the pretty cosmetic surgery. Tally volunteered herself to try the pills that the New Smoke made to see if they got rid of the lesions, but after she became pretty, she forgot everything about her life as an ugly and the pills. So whenthe random boy comes up to Tally and gives her the note she wrote giving permission to take the pills, she is bewildered. With her boyfriend Zane, she goes to take the pills, but splits them with him so that they each get one. Slowly things start to become clearer and clearer to them, but Zane starts getting huge headaches and Special Circumstances Doctor Cable is on their trail to find out about the pills. Suddenly Shay, Tally's best friend, stops talking to Tally and is found cutting herself on the arm with a group of friends. When Zane's headaches get so bad that he can barely get out of bed, Tally plans a hot air balloon escape to find the New Smoke to cure him. When they reach the New Smoke doctor, she says that Zane took the pill that eats away the lesions and your brain, and Tally took the pill that gets rid of the things that eat away the lesions, so Zane has had things eating away at his brain for a month or two, and Tally has had nothing happen to her brain. On their way back, their hot air balloon is overtaken by Special Circumstances hoverboards flown by the Cutters, a new brand of Specials led by none other than Shay, who takes Tally to Doctor Cable where she too becomes a Cutter. This is a swift and exiting read that has a predictable but exiting plot and a futuristic setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Feel Like I Like This Book!
This is our second encounter with Jamie Lee Curtis as an author and like the first (Where do Balloons Go?) they loved it!In this book we join a little girl as she takes a whirlwind tour of 13 different emotions, each told in that same sing-song rhyme that appears to be a staple of Curtis' writing. The rhymes are brought to life with the same riot of color illustrations that really seem to appeal to young readers! The kids especially liked how the colors used changed with the moods while maintaining their vivid shades (there is nothing gloomy or lackluster about this book). At the very end, there is a large picture of the girl in the story with a set of wheels that the kids can turn to see a selection of moods which was quite humorous and led to much discussion between the kids about how they were feeling right then and what types of things that have happened before made them feel angry or silly...or whatever...so it was a light, fun read, but also a good way to get more in depth discussion of moods, how they just happen sometimes and what types of activities/events make you feel certain ways...you know...like what makes you angry or sad...what makes you happy or what do you do when you just feeling silly or blue?I think Today I Feel Silly is best as a read aloud book...and the larger the group of kids you're reading to the more interesting the conversation after can get!I'd recommend this in a heart beat! We loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for boys and girls
This book teaches a wonderful lesson about moods and how they vary every day.You can tell its written by an actress, who likely has more dramatic moods than you and I, but the message is wonderful.I love reading this book to my six-month-old son.

4-0 out of 5 stars Today I Feel Silly and Other Moods That Make My Day
Joyful, confused, angry and happy are just some of the many moods that can make or break your day. Today I feel silly and other moods that make my dayby Jamie Lee Curtis is a hysterical story about a spunky little red head girl whose moods changes everyday with each flip of the page. The elaborate pictures change with each mood of the girl when she goes through her ups and downs. The Author does a brilliant job at adding detail to support how she is feeling and why she is feeling that way. Young and old would get a laugh out of this comical and entertaining book. I personally I love this book because it reminds me when I was little and my own random moods. Everyday you wake up new mood that changes you and the people around you in a good or bad way. After reading this book you might ask yourself, what's my mood today? ... Read more

Until Chrysanthemum started kindergarten, she believed her parents when they said her namewas perfect. But on the first day of school, Chrysanthemum begins to suspect that her name is far less thanperfect, especially when her class dissolves into giggles upon hearing her name read aloud. That evening,Chrysanthemum's parents try to piece her self-esteem back together again with comfort food and a nightfilled "with hugs, kisses, and Parcheesi." But the next day Victoria, a particularly observant and mean-spirited classmate, announces that Chrysanthemum's name takes up 13 letters. "That's half the letters in thealphabet!" she adds. Chrysanthemum wilts. Pretty soon the girls are making playground threats to "pluck" Chrysanthemum and "smell her."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YOU REALLY CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS ONE
What a wonderful, sensitive and timely book.School is hard for kids.It is harder for some than others, but all children go through some sort of ordeal similar to our little heroine mouse. If not, then they are the kids that are dishing out the grief and need the lesson this book teaches even more than the child that is taking all the teasing.Eather way, this is a good work, excellent to read to the class as a whole or excellent to read with your child one on one.The illustrations are great and very much go with the text. This is one of my favorites, but more importantly, it seems to be the favorite of many of the children at the school.Recommend this one highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Prepare an Older Sibling!
I bought this book for a friend that's pregnant and has a little boy that will be 3 when new baby comes.I looked thru the book when I got it and loved the idea of no words. This way they can fit their wording into their lifestyle that best fits them. They can put in their own names and family names and all with this book along with gender.I love the whole book especially the end where the parents along with the bigger sibling tuck the baby into bed. Then, the parents have their night time reading with the bigger sibling who can stay up later! In my house, that is definitely how it works!!It makes my 4 year old feel big and prevents jealousy!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
And so does my two-year old son!It shows all the things that will happen with the baby and his big brother (my chosen genders). It even shows mom nursing which is a very big part of newborn life and I'm glad the author addresses it!And dad changes diapers too.I really like both of the books in this series and we got them both. They are favorites in this house!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 17 month-old loves this book, and so do I
My daughter particularly enjoys looking at books with pictures but no words right now: I tell the story and we discuss the pictures. She brings me this book and says, "Baby!"She really enjoys pointing to the baby and pointing out other objects in each picture (bunny, ball, snake doll, frog doll, bathtub, duck, etc.)

5-0 out of 5 stars My kid's love "Little House" books
I have 5 childern and do not get to read aloud the quanity of books I would like to, so we invest in audio. They can be enjoyed time and time again. My kids play the "Laura" books we own over and over. Great for long car trips or when layed up with illness too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story conitnues...
Little House On The Prairie is a longer read than Little House In The Big Woods and deals more with action and adventture. While the first book seemed to be a guide book on survival in the wild this book is more of a tale with Indians, bush fires and other dangers.Living on the prairie is not the same as living in the big woods, so we do learn some new things about prioneer life and the problems the family faced. In same ways the second book is superior to the first.
5-0 out of 5 stars Illustration of Life on the Frontier
After the Civil War, the Wilder family has decided to make a big move - join the migration to the frontier, from the little cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. The main character and author, Laura, tells about the difficulties and advantages of life on the praire. Even though the journey there is difficult, and, at time, tragic, the family is able to pull through, and arive in the praire of Kansas to make their new life and create their new adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and Charming
A black-and-white picture book that is more gorgeous than any color book I've seen in a long time. Henkes' kitten is charming and beautifully drawn; the text is simple enough for a child to memorize but as rhythmic and elegant as haiku. A great book to read aloud at bedtime. Deserves the Caldicott medal fifty times over. My two-year-old niece was captivated by the bold lines of the illustrations; my four-year-old nieces loved the simple but clever story about the kitten who longs for that little bowl of milk waiting for her in the sky - the full moon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Silly and Most Importantly, Engaging for Young Readers!
I think every young child whose ever accidentally released a balloon into the wild blue yonder has wondered what happens to them...and this book gives kids some whimsical ideas about the secret life of balloons that should ease their minds about what happens...I suppose this is a better way for kids to think about it than just popping somewhere up there and plummeting to the ground. The words are written in silly rhymes and the illustrations are lush and whimsical...just plain silly and loads of fun for young readers.Younger kids (2-4) will like having the opportunity to explore each page and older kids (5-8) will enjoy reading all the additional text loaded onto each page (balloons writing post cards, signs for various things, ect...) that should help keep their interest when the simple rhyme is, well, too simple for them to enjoy. Each page feels rather like an explosion of art and whimsy...it is that chaotic splendor that kids can't help but love!!Where to Balloons Go? doesn't provide any scientific explanation...but it's not meant to, it's just plain fun!! Kids and adults alike will have fun reading this and diving right into the incredible illustrations...if you've got a kid 4-8, this is a must read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars artistic, creative, clever, addictive!!
my daughter absolutely loves this book. the age range says 4 and up but my daughter is two and loves it and is addicted to it. she wants me to read it to her before her nap and bedtime. i would say not to leave it down where a child under 4 could rip the pages. this books verbage and artwork is so clever. my daughter and i both get a kick out of it. there are reusable stickers included in the back of the book and you can use them on the pretty inside covers in the front or back (slick surface- either cloud or space background). she always sees them when we are done reading and can't wait until she can one day play with them. she loves stickers but tends to rip them and ruin them at this age- so i'm waiting to let her play with these! i would recommend this book to anyone, and i know i will buying this as gifts!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a child that has lost someone.
I don't know if this was the original message intended, but I've found this book to be a great tool for helping kids cope with loss. Whether it be a grandparent or a pet, this can open the lines of communication with a young child and help explain things that sometimes adults have difficulty putting into words. I'm a hospice nurse, and know that this book has been reccommended for children in our field for years - and it's darned cute to boot! ... Read more

Editorial Review

MacLachlan, author of Unclaimed Treasures, has written an affecting tale for children. In the late 19th century a widowed midwestern farmer with two children--Anna and Caleb--advertises for a wife. When Sarah arrives she is homesick for Maine, especially for the ocean which she misses greatly. The children fear that she will not stay, and when she goes off to town alone, young Caleb--whose mother died during childbirth--is stricken with the fear that she has gone for good. But she returns with colored pencils to illustrate for them the beauty of Maine, and to explain that, though she misses her home, "the truth of it is I would miss you more." The tale gently explores themes of abandonment, loss and love. ... Read more

Sarah, Plain and Tall is a heartfelt story about a family who lost a mother and wife. Jacob, Caleb and Anna's father, must make the decision to place an ad for a wife and mother for the best for all of them.Sarah, a young lady from Maine, returns letters back and forth to the whole family getting to know them better. She decides to come down to the prairies of Kansas from the sea for a month to see if this is a life she could become accustomed to.When the children see the yellow bonnet coming down the road, excitement was in the air along with anticipation.Would she decide to stay and marry Jacob, or would this place be too small and too far away from the sea for Sarah.
5-0 out of 5 stars great great GREAT!
The book is about the Ann and Caleb's mom dies in her sleep after having Caleb. After a few years Jacob (the dad) writes an ad asking for a new wife. And Sarah answered back, and she answered all the questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Under a War Torn Sky
This book was fantastic. It was very realistic to war. It showed how evil some people can be but then how nice others can be. Henry Forester goes threw it all.Henry is a 19 year old pilot shot down behind enemy lines. He has to survive a lot to make it home. I suggest a tissue when you read it too. But don't get me wrong its an awesome book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books i ever read
This book is brilliant, if you are interested in war, planes or thr second world war this is the book for you. It is clear nice easy to read writing and the chapters are short. The only problem is that i wished the story was longer it was that good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Under a War-Torn Sky
Wow!What a page turner! From the start, I was pulled in and felt like I was right alongside Henry, feeling what he was feeling. Henry was a "boy" who was a fighter pilot that was shot down during World War II behind enemy lines.Due to his perseverence and with the help of many strangers(includingFrench Resistance fighters)who risk their lives, Henry makes it back to his family's farm in Virginia--as a man. This war story includes everything that anyone would want-danger, suspense, adventure, even romance!Don't miss it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Face on the Milk Carton
The Face on the Milk Carton was a good book. I can say that it mostly kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to read more. I usually don't read mystery books, but this one was very interesting. Within 5 min. of reading this book, I just could not put it down. The reason why I say this is a good book, and not a very good book is because, yes I did very well like the book but it had some parts where I felt as if Janie was asking a lot of questions and in my opinion she was sort of freaking out to much. So it made her sound really annoying in the book. Anyway if you are the kind of person who does't really like mystery, I suggest that you pick this book up and I guarantee you won't put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars The face on the book carton
The Face On the Milk Carton is a good book. If you like scary or books that keep you on your feet, you would like this book. I liked the character and personality of Janie. She is just like your normal fifteen-year-old girl. She is in to boys and likes to look at herself in the mirror. During class she is always daydreaming. Her mom is trying to get her to do different activities with her like cake decorating, but she does not really like them; well, it's not her mom its her grandma. What I mean by that is her mom named Hannah joined a group and her grandparents saved Janie from being in a bad group. I recommended this book for all of the people that like books that keep you on your feet, and that like mysterious books suspens

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. I bought it several years ago for my nephew who was starting kindergarten and he found it interesting and reassuring to know that grown-ups get nervous, too, and that his teacher was probably as nervous about meeting him as he was about meeting her. Now that my own daughter is starting kindergarten, I got the book for her. She loves the illustrations and was surprised and delighted at the end of the story to find out that the teacher was nervous about going to school. I am working on my master's degree in teaching and when I get my own classroom, I intend to read this to my students on the first day. It is a delightful book! I'm surprised by the reviewer who was actually returning the book. I can't imagine how she could possibly be disappointed in it. Yes, it does use the word 'hate' but just in the way an average child might use the word. How many of us have heard our young children say "I hate peas?" - I know I have. This is a great book. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Funny, cute book with a little twist at the end. Great for going back to school!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Teachers
This book is heartwarming and funny. The kids love it. It's about a teacher who is nervous about the first day of school. I used it to talk about how everyone is nervous the first day, even myself. It can even be revisited when you have a new student. The students love reading it and the other books by this author about the same teacher. ... Read more
