5-0 out of 5 stars Young readers ages 3 to 7 will thoroughly enjoy Ross MacDonald's simple and engaging story
Even though young Jack's life is just about perfect, he still feels that somehow something is missing -- maybe someone to play with? Then his new baby sister arrives much to his delight. But then his baby sister starts turning Jack's world upside down with a mischievousness that his parents appear to be totally oblivious too! It seems that having a baby sister is a lot more work than Jack had ever expected. Young readers ages 3 to 7 will thoroughly enjoy Ross MacDonald's simple and engaging story so wonderfully enhanced by his colorful artwork. Bad Baby would make a very welcome and popular addition to family, school, and community library picturebook collections for young readers.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST ILLUSTRATOR IN AMERICA GIVES LUCKY KIDS GENIUS BOOKS
What do they mean 'for ages 4 to 8'? Keep the kiddies' hands off this one! This book is a golden dreamscape gone crazy that adults will love as much as children. Ross MacDonald is simply the best illustrator around--I've been known to tear his illustrations out of magazines to save the always hilarious yet somehow also poignant, vintage-looking pictures. There's something about the warm glow in his illustrations that recalls a 1930s illustrated magazine, but you look a little closer and realize there's a very hip and very funny mind at work behind the drawings. Who else would call a kids' book BAD BABY (besides every kid)? This is his best book yet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The expanse of Love shared with children
When I first picked up this book, I was skeptical.Like most parents, I figured my 2 1/2 year old would tire of this book easily. But as I read it, the feelings of love that I have for my own two sons came to mind.I use it to teach a lesson about Love.As a mother, I never run out of kisses, hugs, affection--Love--for my two sons (or anyone else in our lives), but rather there is enough for all.I think that's a great lesson for kids to learn: that sharing is not competitive and there is room for all.I adore this book and my littlest one insists that I kiss his hand every night before he cuddles up with his bear. It's a very beautiful lesson very gracefully presented.

1-0 out of 5 stars poor story line, negative positioning, erroneous detail
The book is not fun or a joy to read, nor even sweet. As a parent I would suggest that this book only serves to promote feelings of neglect, rather than helping to resolve them.As for the story, there is hardly one here.We read many books to our children---I tried to stick this one out, but it is boring and dull, and by pre-supposing a problem, may even cause one.I couldn't read further having read "every night, just before the sun goes down, it reaches out its rays and touches every star in the universe".What utter tripe.Children are smart and reasoning people, to cloud their interpretation of the Universe around them with this rubbish is educationaly dangerous.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for a child with a new sibling
My 2 1/2 year old son received this as a Christmas gift and he loves to readit over and over.He has a new brother, so he relates to the main character in this book. The mother raccoon very tenderly and lovingly handles the sad jealousy/resentment that Chester feels toward his little brother.THe illustrations are also captivating and peaceful, and they contribute to the gentle feeling that you get from the text of this book.My son's reaction to this book was so positive that I am buying two more copies today to give as gifts to other new big siblings. It is definitely the best "big sibling" book that I have read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Kids will love to read!
My 4 year old son loves this book.My son does love books and being read to but due to his autism, I sometimes wonder how much he understands about what he is reading.Autistic people are visual learners so the pictures mixed with the words is a wonderful way for him to understand the book and get excited about it.I read it to him last night, and this morning when we were getting dressed, he pretended he was the boy in the book by putting is pants on his head. That is truly amazing for him to so actively pretend play like that.I then read the book to him again and then he went through it by himself to read it again.I am now looking for more of these types of books for him.My older daughter also loved this book and so did her entire kinder. class.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite of the books in the series
The author of this story must be a very ingenious writer.5-0 out of 5 stars Fun reading prep for young children, with flash cards

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Grass Is Greener" as a "Big Boy", Not as a Baby
With soft, charming, and cheerful pen and ink illustrations and expressive characters, Hurwitz provides a imaginative, educational, and unique variation on the familiar themes of sibling rivalry created by the arrival of a new baby and a child who doesn't want to go to school.Jealous of the attention his baby sister Elsia receives and tired of life as a "big boy," four-year old Russell begs to stay home from nursery school like baby Elsia. Russell's clever mother grants his request literally. She treats him exactly "like a baby."She feeds him only baby food for breakfast, refuses to let him watch TV or play with his Legos, makes him take a nap, puts him in the playpen with Elsia, and gives him a bottle of hot milk to drink.Warned that his lunch will be mashed carrots, peas and banana, Russell decides its better to be a "big boy" and go to school.Embarrassed to tell his school friends why he's late, Russell says: "It's a secret." Recommended for all children aged 4 to 8 and highly recommended those with young siblings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A sure favorite
This is a fun story to read to little ones...my two (ages 4 & 2) giggle over Sam's antics every time.Very much written in a story line my children can relate to.I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another delightful Stella and Sam, slice of life story ...
I couldn't wait to read the newest book in the series. This story is simple in text, yet so very well portrays the older and younger sibblings interaction. Marie-Louise Gay understands children and their thought processes. The little dog is great fun to watch and the tiny things in the illustrations like sea shells on the top of dresser, little striped socks here and there, the handmade art work that decorates their walls ..., read the book over and over again and you will discover something new each time. It's a feel good book and it deserves a place on your bookshelf along side the first Stella books. Thank you, Marie-Louise Gay for the smiles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!
I was introduced to the 'Stella' books by a friend, and what a find they are! The pictures are beautiful to look at, and the little details are wonderful - It's so much fun to find Stella and Sam's pet dog and see what he may be up to. Stella is a 'wise' little girl, her logic is creative and it's really just plain fun to read! (...even more fun because our daughter's name is Stella...She loves to hear these books read out loud!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations!
This is one of my favorites! The artwork is gorgeous and little brother Sam's inquisitive nature is funny.Stella's answers are also quite creative. My daughters really enjoy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars FRESH, FUN, & ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE
I just discovered Stella and Sam this weekend and they are now officially my favorite children's characters ever! The brother and sister relationship has never been explored with such sweet simplicity. A worried Sam asks thetruly stellar Stella question after question after question, and sheanswers with pizazz and panache, until Sam can't help but be influenced byher infectious enthusiasm. Their paunchy little-kid stomachs and Stella'sflame-red hair are sooooo cute that the book would be worth the buy evenfor the pictures. Luckily you don't have to compromise - the dialogue makesit difficult to read without laughing aloud and the story flows with afresh feeling that is completely enjoyable. ... Read more

Editorial Review

How we love Max--the mischievous toddler rabbit who is often battlingwits and wills with his bossy-boots older sister Ruby. Now it's time for thesiblings' Easter egg hunt! Just as the festivities are about to begin, asecretive Easter Bunny places a huge chocolate chicken in the birdbath. "Ilove you," Max innocently declares to the edible chicken he covets. "Wait Max," warns Ruby. "First we must go on an egg hunt. If you find the most eggs then you get the chocolate chicken." But Max, who is still young enough to be distracted by mud puddles andmarching ants, can't possibly focus on finding a single egg. When it becomesobvious that Ruby has collected the most (if not all) of the Easter eggs, Maxtakes drastic measures--as the youngest sibling often will--and steals thechicken. Rosemary Wells's expressive, giggle-funny illustrations (along with the board-book format) make this a perfect Easter story for toddlers as well aspreschoolers, who will delight in Max's blatant misbehavior and relish theinevitable happy ending. 2-0 out of 5 stars This is great for kids...
if they're smoking something. I got this as a discard from the library, and decided it might be suitable for the library in my preschool class. The pictures are cute and yet, disturbing as well. The story makes no sense, and the children did not really enjoy any part of it. I left it in their little library for months, and they never looked at it. This story is simply too bizarre for children, although I'm sure it's great for adults after enjoying certain herbal refreshments. This teacher gives it a "D".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book was so cute!It reminded me so much of me and my one sister.I used to always find her candy and sneak a piece or two (she took forever to eat hers!).My sisters and I all love each other and we're extremely close.Kids will be kids and have their little antics--that's what gives us times to look back on.It is also what makes us so close to each other. This book is one we read every single day during the Easter Season!

3-0 out of 5 stars Love it or leave it.
I think the previous reviewer (tabris02) has given good advice. This book will either resonate with you or it won't.We received it as a gift and were a bit puzzled by it, asking grandma, "What kind of lesson are you trying to teach our toddler?"The bulk of the story was cute, as Max mucked about in the yard while Ruby single-mindedly found every Easter egg.But the ending didn't sit well with me...selfishness with no remorse or consequences or even awareness of his sister's feelings.Years later, with three kids, I realize that siblings will learn to be competitive and selfish even without seeing those traits demonstrated in books. So, I've lightened up a bit.But I still don't find myself reaching for this book on our shelf.Of the Max and Ruby stories, I prefer Bunny Cakes.Another of our favorite Rosemary Wells books is Fritz and the Mess Fairy (Fritz is a slob who during one amazing night tries to make it up to his family by cleaning the entire house and fixing them breakfast in bed.In the process, he makes a huge mess again in the kitchen...but his efforts to improve himself and express his love to his family are very endearing!). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for siblings of adoption!
This book is just wonderful. It is a great preparation for any child who is waiting for a sibling to be adopted. It is a heart-warming story that talks about the adoption process, the waiting, and the emotions that go along with it, from a child's perspective.I love that the little boy can't wait to go to China and get his sister- many other books I have found on this topic show the waiting sibling with a jealous attitude towards the adoption.Jealousy is an important emotion to address, but many kids ARE very excited about adopting a sibling. This book is uplifting, sweet, and really gives a waiting sibling an idea of what to expect throughout the process of adoption.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for explaining adoption process to children.
My husband and I are in the process of completing paper work to get on a list to adopt a child from China. I happened upon this book at a bookstore and loved it immediately. We have already read it to our almost-3-year-old biological child to help explain the process of filling out paperwork and then waiting to hear about our new child. It has been a good way to introduce the topic of adoption. Our daughter asks for it often and has requested that we name our new child "May." :-) The pictures and story are simple enough to interest a very young child but have enough depth to interest a child in the early elementary grades (or even older).

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun sibling rivalry
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book.It has great pictures of a baby being annoying and then how the older brother can help the baby.My only quibble is that the first situation is resolved by feeding the baby a bottle.I wish our culture wasn't so full of bottle pushers when breastfeeding is also a great way to feed a baby!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceeded expectations
We have a 2 yr old boy, and our 2nd boy is due in November so the set up of this book corresponds with our situation. Our son loves it and it has helped him learn the concept of becoming a big brother. He even kisses the baby in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
we are reading this book in preparation for the birth of our second son.i enjoyed how the author takes situations that might cause an older sibling frustration and turns them into chances to "help mommy out".it's a good chance to give suggestions to a child as to how they might mitigate problems they have with their sibling. ... Editorial Review

Big brother Arthur remembers how it was when his sister D.W. was first born. Boring. But just at first. Then they started having fun. Reminiscing about playing peek-a-boo, spitting up, and learning the alphabet and nursery rhymes, Arthur helps D.W. get used to the idea of another brand-new baby in the house.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Arthur's Baby
This is a touching book. It tells Arthur's story as a new baby comes in to his house. It also shows how he adjusted to his new life stlye.

4-0 out of 5 stars GreatForNew Big Brothers Or Sisters
This book is great for younger children who are nervous about the new baby that is going to arrive. There are good pictures and it shows how many kids feel and how to handle the new child. Plus it shows just how much fun having a younger sibling can be.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is typical Arthur material -- bratty.
This is typical Arthur.DW is pretty negative about Baby Kate entering the household. At one point she proclaims "Babies are boring"Later she commiserates that everything seems to be about the baby and not about her anymore.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Based On Me!
Being the "David" to whom this book is dedicated to, and being the basis of the story, I must say I am biased. BUT! This is my favorite of my mom's books by far! It is a great story and a worthwhile read for anyone to read to their children or grandchildren. I would definetly recommend it!
