4-0 out of 5 stars A Book for the Egocentric Sibling-to-Be
Lisa's Baby Sister is a book written for egocentric children who are less-than-thrilled with their mommy's pregnancy and the idea of being displaced as the center of attention by a new sibling. The story is told from the soon-to-be sister's point of view. After a lot of complaining about the arrival of her baby sister, Lisa finally decides that the new baby isn't so bad after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Better than I thought!
I'd been debating whether to get this book for a long time and I couldn't be happier that I finally did. Bateman's powerful story about a young fisherman faced with a merbaby and a crucial decision is magnified by Brewster's striking and vibrant illustrations. When a young man catches a merbaby, he must choose between the fame and fortune she could win him and his brother or the precious innocence that would be lost if he kept her. His decision is made more difficult by the fact that the local merpeople-including the merbaby's own mother-are far from friendly. If he chooses to return her to the sea, he could risk his own life in the process. The story here is well told as well as suspenseful and ultimately touching. Brewster's illustrations are top-notch; along with the gorgeous sea-coloring in the pictures, the merpeople are gorgeous and exotic, though with a hostility that gives them a chilling edge. The picture of the siren on the rock combing her hair with a fish skeleton instead of a jeweled comb is wonderfully symbolic. Like another person said, it's truly a shame that some of Brewster's books are out of print as she is one of the best painters out there. I highly recommend this sea-gem to all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful
a cute story of discovery and innocence. The illustrations are a "virtual undersea adventure"

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Beguiling
I think I would give this wonderful picture book five stars even if the text was tripe because the illustrations are so lovely but fortunately the text is equally good. Two fisherman brothers, one an idealistic dreamer and the other a materialistic schemer accidentally pull up a baby mermaid in their nets along with their catch of fish. Both brothers see dollar signs, one hoping for riches and fame, the other wishing for a carefree life of exploration and discovery. They decide to sell her as a curiosity and make their fortune. The dreamy brother falls in love with the adorable merbaby and his conscience won't let him sell her into a miserable life on land. In the end kindness is rewarded. The story also reveals an age old enmity between the sea folk and the land folk because of the way land folk plunder and abuse the gifts of the sea. It has a good message about ecology and respect for other beings rather than dominance and destruction. The large double spread illustrations have an atmospheric sea-green wash and are as sure to enchant as a mermaid's voice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Memories
This is a wonderful book to read with your children. My daughter, age 2 3/4 loves this book, even though she has never seen snow. It evokes happy memories of snowy days from my childhood. The watercolor pictures are beautiful with just enough playful detail to keep interesting when reading again and again. This book is well written and well illustrated.Stella is fun, with lots of energy, like Olivia (Ian Falconer).

5-0 out of 5 stars we love you, stella
stella, with her red hair and similar fiesty personality, is the PERFECT guide for both summer and winter fun. both my boys love her wacky, child-like and TRUE explanations of seahorses, snowbanks and fun to be had, either in a bathing suit or snowsuit.the illustrations are lovely, the text is true and the attraction for all is evident.this book should not be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Queen is Right!!
Stella certainly is the Queen of her Domain, which is the world inhabited by her brother and herself. With her flaming red hair (a visual highlight of the book), she rules the roost when Sam sees snow for the first time.Stella's explanations to Sam of how the world functions are occasionally accurate but more often creative, alternative, and imaginary. They provide for some great laughs for children old enough to know the truth (bears don't really eat snowflakes for breakfast, do they. . . ?).Their anonymous and silent dog follows their adventures through building a snowman, building a snow fort for a snowball fight, sledding, and making snow angels. The dialogue is very child-like, without being childish and condescending. It gives kids a voice to which they can probably relate, whether it's the supremely confident Stella or the more cautious Sam.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Strategy and Multi Cultural
After reading Mama Elizabeti by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen, it appears that in this book the author's shares her knowledge as well as her experience fromher days in the Peace Corps. The author also demonstrates the connectionwith a reading strategy known as text to world.Using this strategy sheshows that there are similarities from other cultures of the world to ourown.I recommend that this book be used as an excellent example todemonstrate how children throughout the world help their parents and findthat growing up is part of a continuing learning experience. The bookexplains to children that as they grow up and learn, they will find notonly joy and gratification in helping their parents and siblings, but theywill also become aware that they do not need to give up their childhoodpleasures and experiences. The book gives the reader the feeling that eachperson will find the time to enjoy things from the past, present, andfuture. It is a book that might be shared between parent and child, or in aclassroom setting. It is a wonderful example of multicultural reading.Iwould also highly recommend this book to be used to model as well as be astarting point for discussion of the reading strategy: text to world.Itis often difficult to find books that help teachers teach bothmulticultural experiences and strategies, this book is an example of both. ... I got this for my twin daycare girls. They loved it. I loved that it had both the Capital and lowercase letter. Their mom loved that it a frame in the back for their picture. T Is for Twins: An ABC Book is a great way to celebrate being a twin for young kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars F is for Fun
This kids book has great real-life pictures of twins along with fun alliterative ABC words with each one.Would be great for exploring the pictures with toddler twins or learning to read with older kiddos. The pictures aren't quite colorful enough to catch an infant's attention yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice to see all sorts of twins
This book is nice because it has pictures of all sorts of twins. All races, all combinations, all different ages (10 and younger I'd say).

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Spending Time with the Melendy Family
The Saturdays is the first of four books about the Melendy children: Mona, Rush, Randy, and Oliver. Originally published in 1941, The Saturdays tells of several months in the life of the Melendys, as they live in their New York brownstone. The children's mother is dead, but they accept this with the equanimity of most children in books, and live securely with Father, their longtime housekeeper Cuffy, and handy-man Willy Sloper.

In 2006 the National Book Award winner for Young People's Literature went to "The Penderwicks" by Jeanne Birdsall. When this happened everybody started talking about what a throwback the book was.Why it reminded them of E. Nesbit.Of Edward Eager. But to no one does Ms. Birdsall owe more allegiance, whether she knows it or not, than to Elizabeth Enright. The first Enright book I ever read was her deservedly award winning "Thimble Summer".Enright was always a master of a sunny summer tale, heaping her stories with sunny red-cheeked young kids and their various adventures and brief misbehaviors.I was distraught though that I'd never sat down and read a Melendy tale.Logically I should have plucked "The Four Story Mistake" from its shelf and started in on that right away. But being a lazy librarian with a brand new shiny iPod to her name, I instead borrowed "The Saturdays" on cd from my library and listened to one Ms. Pamela Dillman's dulcet tones instead.Since Amazon.com has yet to figure out how to separate book reviews from audio ones, I'll be reviewing both the book itself and the person responsible for bringing its pages to life.Be forewarned though. While the book is perfectly nice and rather enjoyable, the cd leaves much to be desired.

3-0 out of 5 stars Valuable as a True Story Written by a Child for Children
This book deals with sibling relationships in a unique way: it is "a true story" actually written by an older sibling who was in sixth grade at the time of publication.Sshe recaps her experiences with her younger brother from his birth to approximately preschool. With the older sister as narrator, this story has a very realistic tone. She discusses her mixed feelings about her brother at various stages of his development - from initial excitement to frustration to acceptance and love.Unfortunately, she leaps a bit from frustration to love. The reader is left wondering about the cause for this transformation. The watercolor illustrations are nicely done and compliment the text. But, they lack that indescribable "something" that brings true energy, life, and spirit to a great picture book, as opposed to just a nice one.Recommended children aged for aged 4 to 8 who are interested in books written by children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covering the ups and downs of getting along
Written by a sixth-grade girl, and featuring an audio CD of the story and original songs for brothers and sisters to sing, I Was Born To Be A Sister is a charming and informative picture book about learning to adapt to and cherish the presence of a new sibling in the family household. Covering the ups and downs of getting along, teaching new things, and the wonder of reliving things through younger eyes, I Was Born To Be A Sister is very highly recommended reading -- especially for children ages 3 to 7 whose families are anticipated the arrival of another child.

If a book does what it is supposed to do, it not only moves the reader, but it also reminds the reader of the emotions he or she felt the first time the reading the book.A very simple and wonderful story about parents' love and hope for their newborn child, 'Welcome, Little Baby' is a snapshot in time of the reason two people marry and have children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Ode to Older Siblings from a Grateful Baby!
Told from the perspective of a baby, this ode to older siblings is a great antidote for the older sibling who is feeling neglected or otherwise having difficulty adjusting to their younger sibling(s).For the younger sibling, it also reinforces the value and benefits of the attention and love provided by an older sibling(s). Here, a pre-verbal young mouse "talks" to herself about all of the things she wants to say to her sister when she learns to speak understandable sentences.Pictures show the older sister patiently, sometimes reluctantly, helping her younger sister in a number of ways while the younger one "talks" about them gratefully. This includes the older sister feeding the younger one, sharing toys and treats, entertaining and playing with her, helping her learn to walk and sing songs and protecting her. The younger sister wants to more than merely thank her sister for all these things. She also plans to apologize to her for all of the mischief and trouble the she has caused her. Again, these misadventures are shown in accompanying illustrations. Told in very sparse text set against simple, comical illustrations, the pages leave lots of blank space for resting young eyes.Recommended for all children aged 2 to 6 and highly recommended for those with younger siblings.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves it...
My 33 month old son is not very interested in books but for some reason this title caught my eye and I tried it with him.He loves this book.He loves the illustrations and I think it captures his heart because of the relationship between the brother and sister. We have a daughter a year old and I think he relates to the pictures of the two mice playing together. He asks me to read it at least twice at a time when we pull it out.I definitely recommend this for new big brothers or sisters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Board Book that is definitely not Boring!
Rosemary Wells has done it again!Max's New Suit playfully explores a simple concept that is familiar to toddlers and their grown ups.Combining a simple text with her extremely expressive illustrations, Ms Wells tellsthe story of brother and sister team, Max and Ruby.In this amusing tale,Max must get dressed in his new suit (which he hates!) to attend Ruby's teaparty.Despite Ruby's help, the precocious Max wants to do it himself andthis is where the story takes a delightful twist. My 6-month old Max lovesthe Max books and recognizes the Max and Ruby characters.Theillustrations and text are clear and colorful while complimenting eachother. This book holds his attention during our frequent readings and, Ibelieve, helps to foster his sense of humor and fun.Max's New Suit willkeep both child and reader entertained for reading after reading! It is anessential book for every baby's library (or, as Ms Wells might say, everyBunny's library). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Max
Ruby and Max's interactions are so simply stated, yet so representative of sibling and even parent/child relationships.Rosemary Wells makes me react (in this case, laugh) along with my child as we read about Ruby and Max's conversations and adventures.I consider that a sign of a good children's book....a truly shared experience.3-0 out of 5 stars Cute story, but taxing text.
Let me introduce Max, and his older sister Ruby if you are not already familiar with these endearing little bunnies.Max is generally the mischievous one, while big sister Ruby is helpful, but often bossy. In this short story Ruby attempts to teach Max some new words as his first, and only word is BANG.She starts with CUP, then try's POT, BROOM, FISH, EGG, CHAIR and finally APPLE.In the end, Max takes a big bite out of the apple and triumphantly declares it DELICIOUS!"MAX's First Word," is a charming account of brotherly and sisterly love, and teaches a few words too.I love that Max's first word is BANG, kid's love hearing, BANG, BANG, BANG.5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody's favorite book
This is absolutely my son's favorite book, and has been since he was about 11 months old. He will sort through all of his books, pick this one, and come toddling over to me-grinning from ear to ear-and sit down in my lap to have it read to him. The fun of it is, its particular brand of humor has not gotten old for me, either.Read more
