5-0 out of 5 stars Get the Imagination Going with Pictures
Most children have heard the story of Noah's ark, but I think they're rarely encouraged to imagine what the inside of such an ark would be like. This book approaches the story from that angle and really gets a child's imagination going. What would it be like if I were on this ark? What would it look like to have so many different animals all together?
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book for church libraries
This is another lovely book by Jan Brett. The artwork is wonderful and the text is from the viewpoint of Noah's grandson.I bought this for our church library and am glad I did.I also suggest "Naamah: The Story of Noah's Wife" by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso for little girls. It stresses Naamah's job in preserving seeds and plants for use after the flood, and makes the Noah story less of a "men did the whole thing" story.Women were there too and obviously did a lot of work in saving the family and animals, too. ... This book really does not need any words. It is so well illustrated that you can understand every part of the story. His detailing is stunning. Every time we read this book, we find new details. This is the best book of Noah's ark story!

5-0 out of 5 stars Prayers From The Ark/The Creatures' Choir
This book is funny and heart breaking. It captures something in nature that most of us never take the time to notice.Do creatures comune with God?Why not?Who are we humans to think that only we can speak to our Maker.Even if you are not an "animal lover" this book has something for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars -"The voices of animals raised to God in song"-
PRAYERS FROM THE ARK was written and published first, and the poems are in the form of prayers.THE CREATURES' CHOIR waswritten quite a few years later and these last poems are more like letters to God, where the animals refer to their daily problems. The author did not write sentimental verse. The poems of the animals seem to radiate with truth.5-0 out of 5 stars Prayers from the Ark

I thought this book was great - it was really colorful. The overall feel reminded me of the book "Now I Know the Ten Commandments". I recommend it to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for animals, not for theology!
While my son (2.5) loves the pictures in this book, the theology drives me crazy. I can handle the "wicked people" mentioned by others although I wonder what my little guy thinks. The thing that drives me nuts is the fact that the redemptive rainbow at the end of the story, which means God will not do this again, is missing! A good book for learning about animals, but not for learning about God.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Noah's Ark---especially for Maisy Lovers!
I would not have happened upon this book had my daughter not gotten so into Lucy Cousin's character Maisy, and I am very glad I did! It's a wonderful version of Noah's Ark.The animals are so distinct and cool to look at, with lots included you don't usually see, like snakes, worms, butterflies, etc!My version had great endpapers full of many of the animals that were on the ark, and my daughter can spend long periods of time just looking at those. The story is very simple and easy to understand, but doesn't leave out the basic point of the people on earth being evil---not that I want to emphasize that point to a toddler, but the whole tale doesn't make a lot of sense when you read versions that don't say WHY God is flooding the earth!Just a terrific book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Why are you silent?" Noah asked the dove.
When the people of the world sinned, and God chose the only righteous man, Noah, to build an ark, all of the animals gathered around. They, however, believed that Noah would only pick best of all the living creatures. The animals began to boast and argue amongst each other."I am the largest," said the Elephant."I am man's best friend," replied the dog. They argued and argued.5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful story, delightful pictures
This is a wonderful book in which a wide array of animals try to show why they should be allowed on the ark: the elephant argues his strength should save him; the fox, his cleverness; the donkey argues that he is more clever; the skunk, his odor ... Finally, Noah tells them he is to save them all.But the dove who did not brag will be his special messenger.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sting's music put to the page
Using the text from Sting's "Rock Steady," this book combines delightful images with Sting's rhythmical lyrics. Not for religious zealots (the text does not stick to that of the King James Bible)

1-0 out of 5 stars Strange Book
I have three young kids and have read hundreds of children's books. Rock Steady appears to have been written by someone who was intoxicated. This book does not make sense. It is poorly written. I can see no purpose in writing a book this bad let alone purchase it. I have thrown my copy in the trash.

This is the traditional story of Noah's Ark told from the perspective of Achbar, a stowaway mouse who runs from hiding place to hiding place fearful of being caught and left behind in the storm. It is a bit wordy for a bright four year old but a story worth telling. For this family, it was the illustrations that compelled us to keep turning the pages. We enjoyed searching for Achbar in his various hiding places and this helped us to focus in on the beautiful pictures. ... Editorial Review

We've all done it. In the frigid depths of winter we've wished we could be magically transported to someplace warm and sunny. But most people don't have genius parents who just happen to be working on a scientific experiment with time travel at the moment of our wish. Sandy and Dennys Murry, the "normal" boys in a family of geniuses, suddenly find themselves trudging through a blazing-hot desert, seeking a far-off oasis for shade.Their desperate wandering brings them face-to-face with history--biblical history. Soon they're feeling right at home with Noah and his family. Even so, the urgent question is, how will Sandy and Dennys get back to their own place and time before the floods--the many waters--come? As they begin to cross the invisible border into adulthood, the twins must confront their ability to resist temptation and embrace integrity. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What HAPPENED to L'Engle after the first 3 books?
I am in a unique position to provide two firsthand views of this book, unfortunately both negative criticism. One from my 5th-grade self, one from me now, 26 years old. I was in, oh, second grade or so when I read 'A Wrinkle in Time'. Suffice it to say, I was enthused, and followed it up with 'A Wind in the Door' and 'A Swiftly Tilting Planet'. But I detested 'Many Waters'. I just couldn't stand it. It bored me for some reason. That's really all I can say about my earlier self's opinion of the book. It just went on and on without anything interesting happening and reading it was a chore, not a pleasure. But I was not a big reader back then. Most of the books I read at that age I read because I had to read something for a book report, and I would pester my mom to read the real nuisance books to me that I really couldn't stand, which was most of them. She sure had high tolerance. It's only in the last few years I've been able to read novels for enjoyment, not so much because I'm so much more mature now, but because I'm able to polish them off in a day or two now. So I came across it again and decided to read it because I figured before I just wasn't ready for it. Well, more mature or not, I can provide a more thoughtful critique, if a not much more positive one. Indeed, it is profoundly lacking in action, I agree with my 5th grade self, though not enough to get me to procrastinate weeks to finish it off and then beg someone to read it to me. But now I have other problems with it too.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best book in the series
I agree with the other reviewers who said that this book is not like the rest.I disagree when they say that the rest were the good ones and this is the bad one.I far preferred this book to the others in the series. It is nearly a straight up fantasy book, with a relieving lack of L'Engle's new age throw-ins which abound in the rest of the series.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lit Circle Book w Nice Discussions
Our Lit/Comp 9 teacher gave Many Waters to us as a choice for literature circles. This book was perfect for discussions and our group had a great time wondering about the plot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicate, Beautful, and Slightly Surreal
Lisbeth Zwerger tops my list of favorite illustrators because of books like this one. After years of enduring boring illustrations of folks in proper "biblical" clothes calmly standing by as animals filed silently onto a rectangular ark, the story was made completely new to me by this lovely book. Nothing here is typical.
5-0 out of 5 stars I Wish I Could Paint Like That!
A more traditional Noah's Ark Book, this one concentrates more on the animals, and the caring heart of Noah. The illustrations are what make the book unusual and beautiful. The images are typical of the very old imagesfound in old children books from Australia and Britain. The words areperfect and sparse, but with meaning and interest. Children will love theillustrations and thought behind Noah's Ark. Gorgeous book, a must read. ... Read more

Now it seems to me that if you're the kind of person who goes around deciding to write a whole new picture book about the story of Noah's ark, you have two choices before you.You can try to reinterpret the classic tale in a new, amusing, or artistic way."Noah's Ark" by Peter Spier (which won a Caldecott) falls into this category. It's a funny, wordless, different look at the story. The other way is to be epic, bold, and (to be frank) humorless. And in this camp we find Jerry Pinkney's, "Noah's Ark".Telling the story of Noah word for word without any digressions or spots of flamboyant creativity, this book is a straightforward encapsulation of the story we all know so very very well. It's a lovely work and certainly a pleasure to page through but it's gosh darn earnest.A book that takes itself a little too seriously.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice way to tell the old Bible story
