4-0 out of 5 stars Some unnecessarily graphic pics
I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because of the graphic drawings of a girl inserting a tampon. What young girl needs to see this at 9 or 10?I personally feel that they should use pads until they get the hang of menstruation anyway, then they can buy a box of tampons and read the instructions inside. There is no need to shock them with such graphic pics. The book is wonderful otherwise.I wish I could just remove those pages, but they encompass the whole menstruation topic, so it would really disrupt the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Care and Keeping of You
I've got to say, this book has some great information about keeping clean and eating healthy, however, I strongly recomend this book for girls under the age of 11. The period information in this book doesn't really help, and with half my friends, (including me) already have gotten their period by age 11 and 12, this book gives you almost no information. The other stuff is common sense. We know how to brush our teeth and brush our hair! Unless you're 9 or 10 (maybe 11?) don't bother with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very impressed.
My 9 year old daughter & I read this together last week.It is a fabulous book for the "tween" years. It gives detailed information about puberty and caring for your body(how to measure for a bra, insert a tampon, hair care, body changes, etc.) but doesn't get into discussing sex.Though we've talked about sex, I'm glad she has a "reference" book about her body that tells her what she needs to know at this young age.I was so impressed with this book, that I have recommended it to many of my friends with 9-10 year old daughters. The entire section on body image is excellent. They discuss anorexia and bulimia in a factual manner, stressing to girls that these aren't healthy choices.I didn't realize that my daughter had heard of these terms until we read this together.I wasn't sure it was the right time to get into this, but I was wrong. This book is fabulous for starting or extending conversations about the body & puberty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Was So Great!!!!!!!!
This book was so great!!!! When I first got this book I didn't know squat, but ever since I got this book middle school doesn't seem that much scary to me anymore. So if your starting middle school then you should buy this book, also if you in 7th, 8th, and even beyond use this book for help throughout your school years!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Read Book in Daughter's Room
My daughter loved this book. I purchased it for her just before she started 6th grade. She read it over and over as if it were her personal "school-bible".It gave her a good boost of confidence that she needed to transfer to a bigger, newer school.
5-0 out of 5 stars a great book for the summer before middle school
I'm in sixth grade right now, and in the summer of 2005, I was really scared about starting a whole new part of school. I was afraid I'd get lost, I would get bad grades, or none of the teachers were nice. But I was totally wrong for thinking about all of that. This book reassured me for the years to come, and made me feel that I wasn't alone. There were thousands of girls across the country starting middle school too. I felt prepared as I walked into the halls of middle school for the first time, and I felt confident that I would survive. And I did, for it's almost the end of the school year, and I'm having a great time! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars "Cool Mom's" review
I am reading through Woman After God's Own Heart, which I so wanted to share with my son's girlfriend, very new and unsure of her faith, with absolutely no spiritual support from her parents. But "Woman" is very mature and deals with women more my age. I saw "Young Woman" here when I ordered another copy of "Woman" for a close friend. I'm excited about the book... I know some of these teens reviews are mixed, and one actually very harsh. I will say this to the young ladies out there... it IS possible to live purely and holy before God as a teen. I did it with peer pressure and all... I saved myself for marriage and have had a wonderful life. It was not and still is not always easy - even adults have peer pressure. My husband and I talk to our kids about EVERYTHING and don't "flowerize" anything. It is hard out there - but God requires integrity from us. Remember, Elizabeth George was a teen at one time and she raised teen daughters... the way she speaks is out of a heart of love for you and for the Kingdom of God. Philippians 4:8 says Whatever things are pure, true, just, lovely and of good report with VIRTUE and PRAISE - think on THOSE things. When I read the book with my daughter I'll come back to give my final opinion. Blessings! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to get the dialogue going...
I checked out this book from our public library and read itfirst on my own.The format of the book is several short chapters filled with great information followed by questions submitted by girls, which then the author goes on to answer. The book is written in words that are easy for kids to understand and the illustrations are clever and funny. In the other reviews, I read about concerns with the subject of masturbation. That is found ONLY in a question in the Q & A section of Chapter 7.I personally did not feel comfortable with the topic at our age group so when I BOUGHT our own copy, I just tore page 79-80 out and by doing so I didn't disturb neither the end of Chapter 7 nor the beginning of Chapter 8.Overall, this is a great book to get the conversation started with my daughter (almost 10) that has just started taking the leap from little girl to young lady.I have three daughters and I will use this book with all three.Hope this helps...
5-0 out of 5 stars My 8 year old and I love this book
My 8 year old daughter met me at the door last nite and asked if we could read more from the book - I've been reading her one chapter a night. I love the way the topics are handled without being graphic. She asked if we could read two chapters tonite. I would recommend this to evey parent facing puberty with a young girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for your pre-teen girl
My 8 1/2 year old loved it.It was informative, amusing and easy to read.It was in no way intimidating for her.It covered subjects she is beginning to need to know about;hair growth, body odor, breast development, growth spurts, menustration etc.It was not too clinical and each chapter included questoins by children and answers. There is a strong emphasis on the fact that everyone grows in different ways and at different times and that your body will grow at the right rate for you.A lot on loving and respecting your body.Food disorders are discussed. There was not a clinical discussion on sex which I felt should be put off for a year or so anyway.A book I purchased at the same time "The period book" has more on that topic and peer issues.I'll give that to her at 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny! Great! I LOVE it!
Okay, I just turned thirteen. So for my birthday, I get to go to B&N. (I'm a book worm) As I'm looking through the teens area, I notice this book. Ah, what the heck, couldn't hurt to take a peek, Right? Wrong. Hurt very much. That is to say that I was Laughing so hard, I was sure my sides were going to split. My dad is a major Worry Wort. I understand why he worrys, though. This book is just like my dad, only much funnier. And my dad is pretty funny. So this book is great. I highly recomend this for teen girls. No I'm not saying you have probs, but if for nothing else, It's a funny book. The things he talks about in the book ARE important, and it is important to wipe the tears out of your eyes so you could read it. My mom was busting up and nodding her head at the same time. My dad aproves of it as well. My sis is eight, and I'll give it to her when I'm done with it. So it's good for every one. I don't think boys will like it very much, though...

5-0 out of 5 stars Boys will put you on a pedastal
I would recommend this book because I believe it is something that all girls should read. This book has advice for everyone, except for boys, and it is enjoyable at the same time. For example the chapters are on important topics in life. These topics should be read by the people meant to read them, girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This a great book.I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and read this because I wanted to be prepared to give her good practical advise when she gets older. The author expresses his feelings and thoughts very well.It reads like a casual conversation.I would recommend this book to either parent and their daughters. It's very well done. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a Book!
I gave this book to my 11 year old daughter, she took off with it and I never saw it again. She told me she was reading it and that it was "really good".I wouldn't know...I haven't seen what's between the covers!Based on my daughter's reaction, I would recommend this to all parents of girls. If your daughter is like mine and the slightest HINT of the "visiting friend" comes up in conversation, she runs screaming. With this little volume, she can lock herself in her room and get all her questions answered.A must-have.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much?
After actually looking at the book I found it to be informative in the subject matter to do with menstration, I thought some things took it over the line (examining self with mirror),Maybe I am wrong,But.............You decide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, straightforward information made interesting.
This is a great follow-up book to "The Care and Keeping of You" (in the American Girl series). This book touches on all of the same subjects, such as hygene, periods, puberty, etc., but goes a little more in depth. While it does not address sex directly, it does address the topic where necessary and in a scientific, practical way.It is a good "bridge" book for you and your daughter. This book will help your daughter understand herself before she gets into the more adult topics of sex and romantic love. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book!
American Girl book series were always very popular to younger girls, It is a good thing they made a book about horses and the Rodeo to give younger children a good idea about horses! I recomend this book to any youngester who wants to learn about horses!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for horse lovers everywhere!
I loved this book! It had cool stories about girls and their horses. I love horses and this book told me about what other girls do to take care of their horses. I also loved the horse trading cards, hey had many differnt kinds of horses on them. I also learned many things you can do on a horse. I think that if you love horses than this is for sure the perfect book for you!! I also loved all the full colored pictures. I would recommend this book fo everybody! -kristen

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for young horse riders
My 9 year old daughter (and I,her mother) really enjoyed this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is an excellent book for girls who don't have an older sibling that could tell them about their experience through puberty. It is also great for teens entering middle school. During elementary school, there arent many cliques around but in middle school, you'll see cliques EVERYWHERE,and I mean everywhere. this book will teache the child how to deal with the attitudes of the people in the clique, and not to be ashamed of who they are.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute for those under 15
This book is extremely cute-for those under the age of 15. I bought this book when I was 12 and I'm 17 now. Some of the things have stuck with me. Like how to find your power stance and how to plunge a toliet (don't ask). But as I look through it now there's alot of things that seem like they will be good advice but are just obvious. Almost ever section and topic is very blunt and striaght forward. Like the "Be in Charge of Your Financial Life" is quite obvious with the five steps as 1. Earn More 2. Spend Less 3. Save Sufficiently 4. Invest Wisely and 5. Give Generously. And that was as about as indebth as you get. So overall it really didn't grab my attention and bored me.

1-0 out of 5 stars My Mistake
I was hoping, without going to a bookstore and completely looking through it, that this would be a benficial book for my 13 year old.Instead it put her in tears.Instead of accepting themselves as who they are and how they look, they bring kids to the conclusion that they cannot be OK if they break out.My daughter was very upset and all I could do was apologize. If you are looking for a book that wants to compress your daughter into the current fashions and mainstream, maybe this is for you, then again, I strongly believe that my daughter is special and that this has not helped her self-confidence or her understanding of all the changes happening.Personally, I do not want my daughter caught up in all of the latest makeup and dress, I want her to be able to wear what she is comfortable in and feel comfortable in her own skin.Next time I will review any books I get for her much closer. ... After reading this book I have begun to think more about my life. It has really inspired me to be more outgoing and to take better care of my body by playing more sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get on the Bus
This is a nice little book full of quotes for girls, women too. The cover says these quotes are "Empowering and inspirational" and I found that to be true. There are quotes here from women from all walks of life, like Rosanne Cash, Jane Bryant Quinn, Janis Joplin, to name a few, and there are even quotes by some people you've never even heard of, like Debbie Tsai, age fifteen who says, and I quote, "Life is like a bus: you can get on it and go somewhere, or you can just sit there and watch it pass you by." I for one am getting on the bus, you should too. And you should get this little book for the girl in you or the girl in your life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MyDaughter Loves This Book!
This book is perfect for introducing your daughter to her body and the changes she will go through in the early stages of puberty. I got this book for my daughter when she was 9 and I let my daughter read it alone the first time, then we read it together to answer any questions she had.Since then, she's read it several more times. It's an easy read and not too much in-depth for her understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love it
This book takes you from the beginnings of every subject that any girl would want to know. It explains, in a truly enthusiastic way, all there is to talk about for growing little girls. I had my daughters reading this book to me and I had to giggle at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, Love it, Love it!
I was searching for the "right" book, not to serious, not to juvenile and not to boring. I found what I needed in this book. I could only wish I knew half the stuff talked about in this book when I was a pre-teen. My 10 year old really enjoyed and appreciated the book. Thanks for helping me out. Diamond's mom, Kim. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is by far the best self-help book for girls that I have ever come across. It addresses issues--some very difficult--that pre-teen and teenage girls are faced with today.I thought that every chapter was sensitive and well-written.My 14 year old daughter thought the chapters on body image, anxiety and insomnia made her feel better about herself and more in control of her life.I thought that the last chapter, on lesbian teens, was appropriate and helpful as it showed that most girls are not gay, and that tolerance for others who are different is important. My 12 year old daughter found this reassurring as she was beginning to worry that she was a lesbian because of something she read in a magazine. This book is a must-read for every adolescent girl and her parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but deals with some tough issues
My 14 year old daughter enjoyed most of the book, however the last chapter about what to do if you like someone of the same sex was a little "gross" for her.She isn't sexually active and found some of the issue a little too explective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent True to Life Book.Would highly recommend

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't lend it out, or you may never see it again!
The Big Book of Girl Stuff is very funny and a little hard to describe. It's a mash-up of fascinating features, a goofy activity book, and a hip help-book. (Actually, that still doesn't cover it.) But if you want to know what "burning the pom-poms" means, or when Hairball Awareness Day is, you've come to the right place!

5-0 out of 5 stars The way to write history for children
Jean Fritz is one of the best writers of history for children. She doesn't romanticize or simplify to the point of distortion, and she really puts the story in history. Fritz looks with an intelligent and sensitive eye into the heart and mind of Pocahontas, and with an unflinching and respectful eye to Native Americans and the English. The Pilgrim's landing on Plymouth Rock gets more attention, but it all started at Jamestown and this book is an excellent introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short Biography
This is a short, less than 100 pages, biography of what is know about Pocahontas.I rated it 5 stars although I would have preferred a longer book. However the book is priced right for it's size.1-0 out of 5 stars the worst book ever
You should NOT buy the Double life of Pochahontas. There is barely any dialog. It's really d u l l. Its about the english at Jamestown. It is more of a text book than a story book. It is barley about pochahontas at all. It all starts when the English build Jamestown... ... Read more
