5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent autobiography for young people as well as adults.
My 8 year old was assigned to do her monthly book report on a biography. She wanted to read about Abraham Lincoln... until she found out she had to dress up as the book's subject! Regrouping with a week to go and a driving vacation looming, I rushed to ...to find a children's biography available in audio download... and stumbled upon this gem. We all listened to the (abridged) audio version on the trip, and I do think that hearing it read by the author added a great deal. My daughter read the unabridged book with fascination when we got home, though I suspect she might have had more difficulty relating to the book had she not heard Jane Goodall speak her own words first. At any rate, the report (outfitted with khakis, a notebook, and a velcro-handed stuffed chimp) was a great success, and my daughter has met a role model of determination, compassion, and wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart-warming Adventure
An excellent book!Reading about the extraordinary life Jane Goodall has led is fascinating in itself.Add to it the personalities of the chimps you get to know as you read the book and the adventures Jane Goodall has experienced, and you have a fascinating read.Other reviews recommend this book to children, I recommend it for adults as well.I am thirty-something years young and cried when I read parts of this.Dr. Goodall's love for these animals really comes through.

5-0 out of 5 stars We are pretty much from the Planet of the Apes. Lol (^u^)
I haven't read this book but I have watched the documentary on the Nature channel called Communications with KoKo I believe it was and I was amazed at how smart gorillas really are. What I once took advantage of has now changed due to this documentary. Gorillas are really in some ways identical to humans and after you watch this documentary you come to realize that you're just a naked gorilla ... a gorilla without all the fur/hair. I recommend watching this documentary and I think you can purchase it at PBS.org

Editorial Review

Jane Goodall might be a household name for most grownups, thanks to herpioneering work with chimpanzees and more recent efforts at habitatpreservation. But many kids don't know the Goodall story and will love thischance to hit the ground in Tanzania and learn about the remarkable scientistand her beloved chimp friends. With dozens of vintage photographs, Goodallrecounts her early research in Gombe National Park, including a recap of herchildhood and how she came to know Louis Leakey and first enter the bush. Withclear and careful prose, Goodall explains her findings about chimp communitiesand communication, the role of hierarchies, and what sort of threats chimpanzeesface today. Best of all, Goodall's account always keeps curious young readers inmind, even relating some of her mistakes, such as when she became too close toher subjects and interfered with her own research.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Goodall tells about her chimpanzees to a new generation
My father subscribed to both "National Geographic Magazine" and their related series of books, the most memorable of which was about Jane Goodall's study of chimpanzees in Africa. The story of her work and the photographs of Fifi, Flo, Flint, Gremlin, David Greybeard and the rest were so enthralling. Many of those photographs, such as the one of infant Flint watching his mother Flo fish for termites and showing that man is not the only tool-using animal, are collected in "The Chimpanzees I Love: Saving Their World and Ours," which Goodall uses to introduce her exciting work to a new generation of young readers.5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful woman, extraordinary book

4-0 out of 5 stars A close connection
From the compelling portrait on the front cover, the photographs are one of the strongest features of this book. There are full-page photos of gorilla hands and feet that would be wonderful for actual comparison to a young readers' hands and feet. And this comparison would support one of the key messages of this book: humans and gorillas are very much alike. Sometimes that similarity is not such a good thing; for example, as humans and gorillas come into closer contact, the apes are catching human diseases which are hard for them to fight. Gorilla Doctors describes the work of veterinarians and other scientists who are struggling to keep the great apes safe in the wild. The language is very accessible, and could even work for a read-aloud to a younger child who's particuarly interested in gorillas.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating account of gorilla vets at work
This engaging book follows staff members of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project as they provide medical care to endangered gorillas in Rwanda. Turner combines compelling stories of individual gorillaswith clear explanations of how diseases are transferred between species. Kids will be intrigued by the detective work required to diagnose gorillas from a distance. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll feel like you're there
A vivid portrayal of important work being done by gorilla vets in Rwanda.Written by a science writer who is also a skilled storyteller, it gives the reader a first-hand look at the plight of gorillas and what is being done to help them.Accounts of charming individual animals bring emotion to the fact-packed text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Blend folktales with facts and provide fables, proverbs, legends, and introductory facts
Both young adults and younger audiences with parents who like to read aloud will appreciate the lovely new Shirley Climo story collection Monkey Business: Stories From Around The World, featuring color drawings peppered throughout by Eric Brooks, and monkey-focused stories from Africa, the Americas and Asia. This isn't a picturebook, nor is it entirely fiction: 118 pages blend folktales with facts and provide fables, proverbs, legends, and introductory facts. A unique, gorgeous coverage suitable for any elementary-level animal book collection.
