Editorial Review

"There has obviously been some kind of mistake," writes Alexander T.Wolf from the pig penitentiary where he's doing time for his alleged crimes of 10 years ago. Here is the "real" story of the three little pigs whose houses are huffed and puffed to smithereens... from the wolf's perspective. This poor, much maligned wolf has gotten a bad rap. He just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, with a sneezy cold, innocently trying to borrow a cup of sugar to make his granny a cake. Is it his fault those ham dinners--rather, pigs--build such flimsy homes? Sheesh.Read more

Jon Scieska wrote the book The True Story of The Three Little Pigs. The genre of this book is Fiction. In the book, there are four main characters. They are Alexander, and the three little pigs.
5-0 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE DELIGHT
This is a wonderful, delightful and simply funny off take on the old three little pigs story. It is told by the wolf and the story is through his eyes. Now whether you choose to believe his story or not, is completely up to you.The wolf is able to tell a pretty convincing tale, but you just don't really know. This story could be pulled from the newspaper of any of our large city papers today. The author has a true wit about his writing that is appealing to bothyoung and old.The art work is great and fits quite well with the text.Recommend this one quite highly. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Barnyard Animals Aloft
Starting with the historical facts of the first hot-air balloon ride, which took place in Versailles, France in 1783, Priceman lets her imagination - and illustrations - run wild. The first hot-air balloon aviators (i.e., the guinea pigs) were a sheep, a duck and a rooster. After a few introductory pages of text, Priceman depicts the flight with a series of wordless illustrations. The complex pictures lend themselves to careful inspection to catch all the elements of the story. In the end, our barnyard aviators land safely, which I hope this is one of the true facts of this story. 2006 Caldecott Honor Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Congratulations on your 2nd Caldecott Award!!!
I love this book and my children love it more. The story is hilariously told through the beautiful illustrations. The Caldecott committee made an excellent choice. This book would appeal to children of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stratospherically Sublime
In Hot Air: The (Mostly) True Story of the First Hot-Air Balloon Ride, author and illustrator Marjorie Priceman shows once again why reviewers have christened her "the master of whimsy."Recounting the Montgolfiers 1783 test run of their balloon and imagining, with postmodern verve, the story of the duck, sheep, and rooster who formed the first flight crew, Priceman's narrative is sure to delight both young readers and parents alike.(Reassurance: no animals were harmed in the telling of this Enlightenment-era tale). But the illustrations are the real treasure here (and the Caldecott committee concurs). While infused with the same spirited energy as her earlier books--How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin, Emeline at the Circus--the panels in Hot Air glow with a luminosity that outshines even Priceman's earlier work. ... Read more

Whenever we go out to eat, we are sure to take this book along. It keeps my little boy (11 months) entertained while we wait for our food, and works like a charm. There is nothing better when he is screaming his head off than to pull out this book and presto, instant smile. He touches and feels and tries so hard to say baa at the sheep at bark at the dog.It is well worth the money. And so far it has held up remarkably well (even though there is rice in the dogs fur and cheese on the lambs wool).

3-0 out of 5 stars Touch and feel book
The book is sturdy, cute and of good quality, but my toddler was not impressed. I thought she would like the book better then she did.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite baby gift!
I just love ALL the books in this series. My children just loved them when they were little, and if you've ever had babies you know how valuable a good book is -- you get to sit down for a while! They were fun for me to read and really fun for them to explore. In fact, I've already packed them away in their hope chests for when they grow up and have children.

1-0 out of 5 stars Teach Children the TRUTH About Milk
This book is a joke.I believe there is a sentence in the book referring to cows having to eat special feed to produce good milk. That feed most likely includes BGH (bovine growth hormone), antibiotics, and animal protein (chickens, pigs, dogs, cats, etc.).The dairy industry has done a great job at sugar-coating the truth about what goes on.The truth is that 1) milk is NOT necessary for children, 2) milk has been linked with various autoimmune diseases including Type 1 diabetes and rhematoid arthritis, and 3) milk is NOT a necessary source for calcium. In fact, leafy greens offer enough calcium.
4-0 out of 5 stars MILK MAKERS
I understand why this wasa reading rainbow book.It is a great experiment activity non-fiction book. This book exaplins how milk is processed. Most children most likely think that the milk in the fridge comes from the store. What they may not realize is that it comes from a farm miles away. This book goes into great detail how milk is made, and the makeup of cattle.it also gives brief descriptions of variuos types of cattle and dairy products. The illustrations use labels and bright colors.I think this is a good non-fiction book for children. It is in a language that they understand and it is easily read. The book is also very accurate as are all, her books.Gibbons was raised on a dairy farm and has made numerous trips to the dairy farm.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book on farming and dairy production

5-0 out of 5 stars new goat owner handbook
i recently gave my boyfriend a fainting goat, to join his aging wether which came with his rural property. he is from chicago, and knew nothing about the care, feeding, or otherwise necessary knowledge regarding goats. he has raved about this book, and is reading it cover to cover, sharing enthusiastically about his newly aquired knowledge. i also read it before giving it to him, and agree that although this book appears to be geared toward the younger owner, it is invaluable to anyone starting out as a goat owner, as well as a reference book for those needing reminders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful and Eloquent
With beautiful, colorful illustrations and simple, eloquent prose, this book tells the story of how the gift of one goat transforms the life of a little Ugandan girl and her family, ultimately allowing Beatrice to attend school and raising her whole family from poverty. The tale is inspiring, not preachy - inspiring not only for what the goat means to Beatrice, but for what it demonstrates to us all. Small gifts can mean the world. Not only do proceeds from this book benefit Heifer International, but thanks to the story, many more children and families may realize that the gift of a goat to people they don't even know may last longer than any present under the tree. Last Christmas - before I had even heard of the book - my fiance and I decided to give a goat through Heifer International, as our gift to each other. We still take delight in imagining our goat, happy and giving its milk to help a family know a better life.

This book is a wonderful example of what the organization of Heifer International does and how we can be a part of that. The story is written for children, but has great appeal for adults also.Very well written and the illustrations are wonderful.I highly recommend this book and the organization it depects.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This is one of the loveliest books that we read to our own children. It has a beautiful, rhythmic, lyrical text, perfect for reading aloud - something rare in more recent children's books.I can still recite large parts of it by heart, and one of them still makes me cry.I'm buying it for my [...] granddaughter, and I can't wait to read it to her.

These are great animals! They are "real"and they do real things!I love them because they are just like some of mine!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Primer for Children
This book is classic!A primer for Children on the nature of our relationship to animals, both domestic and wild, and on the cyclic nature of life. The story centers around farm life, and remains a favorite of mine from childhood. It is a favorite of my two children, as well, and provides an inspiring counterpoint to life in the suburbs.Wonderfully layered characters and illustrations bring values such as sharing, compassion, hard work, family and friendship to the fore, while the overall theme of birth and rebirth forms the background.

I picked this up at our local library after we watched chicks hatch at a display at our local fair. This was a little too much information for my 4 1/2-year-old. We have read many Stage 1 books from this series; this is the first one I've seen at this level that addresses reproduction. In very simple terms it talks about "mating" and "fertilization." Be prepared to respond to questions about this topic.

I bought this because my daughter LOVES Maisy. We had previously bought the playhouse, and my 2 year old loved it so much, we bought this one too.My only suggestion is to laminate or tape up (with clear packing tape) the Maisy, Cyril, Tallulah, and Charley since they get worn out very easily.I know Maisy's arms don't move then, but my daughter didn't seem to mind.Otherwise, this will provide hours of fun!

I love the concept of this pop-up Farm, the design is adorable. However, my 3 year old, who is extremely gentle with her things, has accidently ripped many of the parts & pieces. It is not built that well!I keep a glue stick with me every time she plays with it, which is daily. The cut outs of Maisy & her buddies are very cute.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun and keeps them busy for ages
This book opens out to form a pop up farm scene - complete with vegetable garden, barn, stables etc.All the peices that you use to tell your own story need to pressed out of a thin card before you start, but there are lots of surprised hidden amongst the walls of the pop-up to discover for yourself.A small book is also included.Read more

Editorial Review

Picked on, pecked, and jostled, Daisy the hen is not quite as happy asher Happy Hens market basket might suggest. One evening, fed up with the otherpushy hens, Daisy crawls into one of the baskets by the river, and falls asleep.Unaware of the rising river, this put-upon bird winds up floating downstream, past marauding monkeys, snorting water buffalo, and a greedy fisherman. WillDaisy ever make her way back to the home of the little girl Mei Mei and the sixhappiest hens in all of China? Breaking away from her usual Scandinavianillustrations and stories, Jan Brett embraces the beauty of China in this Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Daisy Comes Home
Jan Bretts latest book, Daisy Comes Home is a charming book for young children. The story takes place in a rural village in China along the Li River. A young girl named Mei Mei is known for having the healthiest and happiest hens in the village. She carries the eggs from the hens in a basket that says Happy Hens into the village to sell. The story begins by looking back to the time when not all of Mei Meis chickens were happy.Even though Mei Mei fed them treats, gave them fresh hay for their beds, and bathed them, the one called Daisy was not happy. The reason being that all the other hens always picked on her and were very mean to her. They always pushed her off of the perch so she had to sleep on the cold, hard ground.5-0 out of 5 stars Not a shelf-sitter
Jan Brett has woven together intricate illustrations with an exciting story as we float with Daisy the hen down the Li River on an unexpected trip. Daisy's encounters with a dog, a water buffalo, a pack of monkeys and a fisherman are interesting and life-like - no talking animals here! As Daisy and Daisy's owner Mei Mei make their way to the marketplace, the mountainous scenery changes often. Look carefully and you will see the mountains become dragons and snakes, chickens and monkeys. The marketplace illustrations feel authentic and up-to-date and the wonderful colors and hustle-and-bustle feel adds to the story's tension for an exciting reunion! Brett's illustrations are wonderfully layered with Chinese textures and materials from china pattern designs to bamboo screens. Beautifully illustrated and skillfully told, Daisy Comes Home is sure to be one of those favorites that asks to be read over and over again.

So I call this one "Chinese Chicken," and "The Story of Ping" I call "Chinese Duck," but my kids love them, and every time we read it, we discover something else in the story of the illustration that strikes and intrigues us.I'd definitely be interested in reading more of Ms. Brett's work...I'm grateful for the thought she put into this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference tool
My very first chickens are 2 months old now, and I've referred back to this book countless times, for help with making brooder boxes, when to remove the heat lamp, buying feeders/waterers, making our coop, treating diarrhea, when to switch feeds, how to tell a cockerel from a pullet (!), to find out if panting in 90-degree weather is normal (it is), etc., etc.It may be written for kids, but it is not condescending.I appreciate the practical and have-fun approach.I just read about the different chicken sounds, and learned that the cool sound my hens make when they're happy is called "singing."Get the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for children
This book is easy to read.I thought it was helpful even for the adult beginner.A great book for a child/parent project, 4-H or school raising chicks. 4 stars because I had to explain many of the words used to my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for the novice wanting to raise chickens
Raising healthy chickens is a new experience for most kids today.Buying a few eggs to hatch or getting a couple of cute chicks at Easter is easy, but what happens when they start to get bigger! We know they eat and poop a lot but how do we help them survive to the point where they can actually lay an egg? What do you feed them?Where do you keep them? Can a chicken really make a good pet? You'll find answers to all these and many more questions in this wonderfully written and easy to understand book about raising chickens.Gail Damerow must have raised more than just a few birds because she demonstrates a solid understanding of the common and not-so-common issues facing the rural or urban chicken farmer ... When I bought this book, it looked pretty good and since it had more than a hundred pages, i thought i would enjoy it but i didnt.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonder ful Way To Learn About Breeds Of Horses!
I haven't read the new edition, but I have an old, 1960s hardcover from an antique store and it is beautiful! Henry's breed descriptions turn the history of a horse into a captivating story. Best of all, it is all factual! Dennis's amazing horse pictures illuminate the book and give it a charming touch. Being a devoted Appie lover and owner, I was particularly fond of the chapter on the Appaloosa! All the stories and accompanying artwork peices are spectacular, though, and it is my opinion that every junior rider worth her salt should have a copy of this book on their shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a horse lover.....
