5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Incredible
I was in awe when my son received the Dinosaur book for Christmas from his Grandfather. I saw this book in a Parents magazine and had to get it based on the fact that the Dino one was incredible. My 3 year old loves it! It's not a book to let him play with unless you want it destroyed. Instead, this book allows us to make some quality time for each other when we sit down and look through it. It's very informational, and as he grows older I'm sure he'll read it, but at this point the pop-ups are worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves the book
This is a very interesting book.My 5-year old has really enjoyed the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Pop-up books.
A Great Book to Read With the Kid on your lap. Probably best for kids in the couple or three grades. Best for kids on your lap because pop-up books are rather fragile. Grabbing the nose of the shark and using it as a handle to lug the book around is likely to lose the nose to your shark.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unexamined metaphysics
My boy brought this home the school library and the title of the book intrigued me. What is it like to swim by swishing your tail, round and round, in a small little bowl; or, eating fish flakes sprinkled from above when the person decides it's time to be fed; or to live in an environment that deteriorates day after day into murkiness until you are suddenly scooped up by a net and put into an even smaller container while your bowl is being cleaned? What IS it like to be a fish? Alas, there are no answers to that question found in this book -- pity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, But I wanted a little more.
I enjoyed the book, as other reviews have mentioned, it is a good period piece about life on the Jersey shore in 1916. The author tried to touch a lot of bases and started but did not complete a lot of story lines. When I was finished, I found myself looking for another book about the events that would fill in some blanks.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was okay....
This was more a history book about 1916. I would have liked to have had more details about the shark attacks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Done
I started reading this tome when it came out a few years back. I gave it my best, trying to salvage what I could from Capuzzo's writing style, the subject, and anything else I could find. I cannot give this book a good recommendation to folks interested in the subject of sharks in general and the 1916 attacks in particular. I gave up reading it about a third or so through it, and have since found Dr. Richard Fernicola's book "Twelve Days of Terror", and the subsequent movie based on it far superior. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We saw the exhibit!
I just ordered this book, but it has to be five stars. My wife and I saw the Sharkabet exhibit last fall at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, and it was super! We have several of Ray Troll's T-shirts, and I hope that some of the Sharkabet pictures turn up on T-shirts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ABC's of Shark Evolution and Diversity
The time has come for a terrific book like this. Sharks are the subject of widespread and abiding public interest, an interest spurred on by (often sensationalist) media portrayals. As author Peter Benchley writes, "(The) long term reaction to Jaws has been not hatred but facination," while Time magazine in response to an apparent spate of shark attacks last year, pronounced summer 2001 "The Summer of the Shark". Despite the prevailing fascination with sharks, the animal -- like science as a whole -- continues to be shrouded in misconceptions, and these misconceptions, in turn, have placed sharks in great peril. Ray Troll's engaging art and essential text present the little known depths of shark diversity with a hip whimsical flair. Beautifully designed, this very high quality printing from WestWinds Press does justice to Troll's delightful, yet scientifically accurate, rendering. A quick shout-out to the scientists whose research Ray has brought to life, especially the paleontologists. Ray has given flesh to the bones of their long gone critters. Hopefully, this "back to basics" book will offer a more balanced view of those endangered predators still with us in Earth's oceans today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sharkfeed of Fun!
I find myself coming back to this book again and again to study the brightly-colored illustrations and tasty chunks of spellbinding sharklore. As a teacher of native English in Japan, I can testify to SHARKABET's popularity with children and adults alike; it even cuts across the language barrier with its visual wonders. In addition to pictures of unusual sharks in their native habitats, there are also fanciful but realistic scenes that leave my students gaping, such as sharks swimming in the air (for comparison with we earthbound types).Although I find the extinct prehistoric sharks to be the most fascinating -- some with mouths that look like power tools -- the little-known living sharks give their predecessors a run for their money (look for the Cookie Cutter Shark). The colors are vivid and lifelike, the facts seem like something out of God's own Sci-Fi Playroom, and even the experts find new treats to chew on in this excellent, amazing wonder. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro to ocean life
I found this book at an aquarium, and bought it as a gift for my 4 y.o. son and 2 y.o. daughter.Too often, books about nature or science for the younger set give too little info (just pictures and names) or the info is just plain inaccurate.Meanwhile, the books for grade schoolers are too complex (and too long for mom to read as a bedtime story.) This book fills the gap perfectly. It gives honest information in a fun, rhyming format.I am here at amazon.com to see what else I can find in this series, which I had never seen before.I am sure to buy more of these.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye to Eye with a killer shark
Take a plunge into the sea with Peter Benchly! This eye opening book shows the encounters this author has had with all kinds of different sharks all around the world you will encounter. Killer Sharks, like the Tiger sharkof compleatly harmless sharks like a Whale shark. Peter Benchly has been through it all. This book makes you feel like you are in the clear waters swimming right next to a shark. Find out what happens to him as he spends his life in the water with sharks and other kinds of sea creatures, in this amazing book of different kinds of sharks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: SHARK LIFE
SHARK LIfe is exceptionally entertaining and enlightening nonfiction for young adults.Benchley (the author of JAWS) moves back and forth between recounting his own heart-stopping adventures in the sea (sometimes purposely swimming with sharks and other deadly creatures, sometimes accidentally encountering them), and his simple and clear explanations of how man's interference with the balance of the world's oceans has already resulted in some dying regions. He cautions how further degradation of the seas will eventually threaten man's existence on the planet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, I Guess We Aren't Fish People - a review "Trout, Trout, Trout"
The artwork in this book is wonderful and humorous; but to get your money's worth I think you have to be into fish more than normal people. My children (boy and girl; 4 and 6) for example were not gripped by the sort of frenzy that other reviewers report from their children.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book but notjust for fishing folks!
This book is playful, funny, whimsical and witty all at once. The illustrations set it apart as a great childrens book. My son loves the rhymes and laughs if I get a good pace and point to all the animated fish characters. Get a copy for all fishermen you know and then those that want a great read for their little ones. The reference pages in the back are educational too so this can be used for lessons as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars There's something about Jim Arnosky's art.....
A must for the young shark enthusiast. My 5 year old uses the great illustrations to better his own shark art. Jim Arnosky is one of the best illustrators for kids. This book also covers the basic facts on sharks: The shark family divisions, shark anatomy, shark safety, shark teeth, and shark young.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid introduction with realistic color drawings
Jim Arnosky's All About Sharks deserves ongoing attention for its attraction for younger picturebook readers seeking a solid introduction with realistic color drawings which are startling but not terrifying. Full color and the inclusion of anatomical cut-aways for simple viewing make for an excellent basic introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful natural history for young readers
This natural history traces the life cycle of a Barbour's Sea Horse. The facts are presented clearly and are supported by outstanding illustrations. The author has also provided an index and encourages young readers to use it -- not common in a picture book aimed at young readers.
