Editorial Review

There's something very strange about the rats living under the rosebush at the Fitzgibbon farm. But Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with a sick child, is in dire straits and must turn to these exceptional creatures for assistance. Soon she finds herself flying on the back of a crow, slipping sleeping powder into a ferocious cat's dinner dish, and helping 108 brilliant, laboratory-enhanced rats escape to a utopian civilization of their own design, no longer to live "on the edge of somebody else's, like fleas on a dog's back."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first novel
I read this as a kid sometime before the movie was made of it.It was the first novel I had ever read through, and I was so captivated by it that I read it all at once, it keeping me up until dawn.It is very intellectually engaging, I think, as a novel for young readers. The whole story of the rats becoming smart is thought through and developed in the way of good science fiction. And the characters handle their problems in realistic ways, with the practical consequences of courage, cowardice, etc. playing out. ... Editorial Review

After years of dreaming of planting a garden, Mr. McGreely finally takeshoe and watering can in hand and makes his dream come true. Unfortunately forhim (but luckily for readers), this is not the happily-ever-after part of thestory. Late one night, three hungry bunnies appear: "Tippy-tippy-tippy, Pat!Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!" The next morning finds our farmer gnashing his teethover the gnawed sprouts. So he builds a small wire fence. That night... "Muncha!Muncha! Muncha!" So Mr. McGreely builds a tall wooden wall. You get the idea.Young readers will hang on every word until they find out, once and for all, whowill win the battle of the broccoli.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Go Bunnies Go!
My 3 year old son loves this book. The story is easy to follow and has that repetitive style that small children love. The battle between the sneeky bunnies and Mr McGreely is great, and builds to a very amusing ending.I have read this story every night now for the past 3 months and I am sure that I will be reading it for at least another 3 - Muncha, Muncha, Muncha!

This book is a little cool. Because of the riting and picture. for little kids will be cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating reading.
C.B. Mordan's dark woodcuts are perfect to accompany OH RATS! THE STORY OF RATS AND PEOPLE. Here science, history and natural history blend to provide a spirited, lovely account of rats and their interactions with humans. Kids in grades 3-5 will find this fascinating reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rat a tat tat tat
I thought I knew a lot about rats. I did. After having read Robert Sullivan's book for adults, "Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants", I found myself under the distinct impression that Sullivan had told me everything about rats that there was to know. Imagine my shock then when, upon picking up Albert Marrin's, "Oh, Rats!: The Story of Rats and People", I discovered fact after fact after fact that I didn't know at all. Did you know that there was once a prehistoric rat that was seven feet long 17 million years ago? Or that a rat can collapse its skeleton so as to fit into tight places? Marrin doesn't just look at rats. He examines their bad and good (they have some) qualities in such a way that his book comes across as the foremost children's literature authority on the critters proper. Stir in C.B. Mordan's woodcut-like illustrations and you have yourself one heckuva book. One that will have even its adult readers alternately aghast and entranced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just fabulous
Bright and bold illastrations firmly keep the childs attention, whilst Mem Foxs rhyming has them quickly reading along with you. A big favourite for many children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive fun!
I enjoy reading this book to my 2.5 year old son.It is repetative and enjoyable as he chimes in with the "Boo to a goose" line. They say this is how young kids start to learn how to read!I think it is just fun to have a book that helps your child interact with the reader. The illustrations are also unique and fun...a collage type art. I recommend this book for any parent that enjoys interactive reading time with their child 2+.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great rhythmic book for young listeners (and readers)
"Boo to a goose" is a refreshingly silly book that's fun to read to kids. The structure is very repetitive, so they know exactly when to say that they "wouldn't say boo to a goose," and all of the other, braver things that they would do instead are funny to slightly older kids too.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bill Peet's sweet illustrations shine, as always, throughout this book
I own the entire Bill Peet collection of children's book that he has written/illustrated. I started reading them to my son when he was 3 years old, and am thrilled to report that he loves them as much asI do. Capyboppy is based on Bill Peet's true life experience with this lovable rodent, and while his illustrations and storyline are wonderful, this is my least favorite book in the collection. It is a little heartbreaking at the end and I came away feeling quite sad. There are many funny antics and true compassion throughout the story, and it's is a natural progression of nature that's shown, so if you are able to handle a little "sadness", you will love this book. And if anything, the pictures are wonderful to look at.

5-0 out of 5 stars The real thing!
I have been working professionally on capybaras since 1981 and this book is a beautiful portrait of what a capybara is like. The drawings, the details of the capybara's behavior are exactly what I would have expected a capybara would be as a pet. The story is also very nice, very well written and fun. Excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars CHILDHOOD FAVORITE
This book was my favorite as a child.Capyboppy is so cute and loveable what child wouldn't like him?Every time we went to the library, I'd beg my dad to check it out and read it to me.Even as an adult in my twenties, this book is just as entertaining as ever and I still think of myself as my dad's little capybarra.I'm so glad copies of it are still avaliable so I will finally be able to have my own copy and one day read it to my children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful!
This is a wonderful book.My daughter is 20 months and will not go to bed for naps or in the evening without it.The illustrations are just superb and have so much to talk about and marvel at, and the story is great.I think most of us have been little mouse at some point in our lives!I love this book and am sure it will remain a family favourite for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful bedtime book!
We first checked this book out from the library on a whim.I'd never heard of the author and was just trying to grab a few books on the fly to keep my son entertained. He immediately fell in love with this book.He asked me to read it repeatedly, and it has now become his all time favorite. It is a shame it is not as popular as some of the other children's books out right now, for it is every bit as well written. It is a definite must for your child's bedtime book collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tale of a Persistent Mouse who Perseveres-Our Favorite Book!
About two months ago, I purchased this book for my 3 year old, who is a very persistent little person. She loves this book because she likes to sleep in her parent's bed when she can't get to sleep, just like the Little Mouse in this story, who in the end, after asking many times, "Can I sleep in your bed?" finally gets to sleep in Big Mouse's bed. To my daughter, the moral of this story is that persistence pays off!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
Parents and kids alike will enjoy these very funny stories for beginning readers. My kindergartener and I laughed so hard, especially during the sheep story. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful animal stories for school-age readers.
If you love James Marshall's "George and Martha" stories but your child is outgrowing them, you can find similar humor in chapter book style in "Rats on the Roof."The stories are all about animals and their goofy dilemmas. There is a sheep who gets into big trouble by pretending to read when he can't (he thinks a "DANGER - Beware of Wolves" sign reads "welcome to the pretty green park").And there is an owl who has to defend her tree from a hungry brontosaurus (who said only meat eating dinosaurs are dangerous?)...Marshall's funny illustrations add to the pleasure of the tales."Rats on the Roof" is clean, lighthearted reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for young readers
I bought this book for my daughters 9th birthday because we decided to let her get a hamster. The book is very informative, has bright colorful pictures, and simply makes you want to read it! My daughter read the entire book in one setting, as did I. I liked the fact that each chapte focuses on the child reading the book, explaining everything in simple terms and then on the very last page of the chapter there is a just for parents list of everything that was covered in the chapter. I know I learned a few things from reading this book and I'm sure you child will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info in a "cute" package!
When I found a review of this book on hamsterific I thought it was a book about the cartoon Hamtaro, but I was wrong. It's filled with very good hamster information that's easy to read, but still more comprehensive than other hamster books I've read.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Hamster Books I ever read
I'm huge Hamtaro fan (Anime and Manga).I had been a Hamtaro fan for about a year or more when my best friend decided to get a hamster of her own.I went to a sleepover and had met her new hamster "Harmony" named after Harmony in the 2nd Hamtaro game and future character in the Hamtaro Anime Series. With that her parnets had got her this Hamster Care Book.I only looked at a few pages and I really enjoyed it.A month later, after begging, my mom finally got me a hamster (Who's name is "Bijou").She didn't get me any books because I had already researched about Hamsters and my brother had one a few years ago (But my brother didn't know how to take care of him).I decided to buy and borrow Hamster Care Books to gether more information about Hamsters.Along one of these books, I finally got the Hamtaro Hamster Care Book and I loved it more then the other books I had collected. My little cousin (Who's 5) who's planning on getting a hamster had looked at the book and understood it right away (Without me explaining any thing).I highly suggest this to any Hamtaro fan, hamster fan, animal fan, or someone who getting a hamster. ... Editorial Review

How terribly surprised the Little family must have been when their second child turned out to be a small mouse. Apparently familiar with the axiom that "when in New York City, anything can happen," the Littles accept young Stuart into their family unquestioningly--with the exception of Snowbell the cat who is unable to overcome his instinctive dislike for the little mouse. They build him a bed from a matchbox, and supply him with all of the accoutrements a young mouse could need. Mrs. Little even fashions him a suit, because baby clothes would obviously be unsuitable for such a sophisticated mouse. In return, Stuart helps his tall family with errant Ping-Pong balls that roll outside of their reach.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary johnson's review
I thought Stuart Little was a great book. Stuart is not a ordinary mouse, he is an adventerous mouse. The book was much better than the movie!

2-0 out of 5 stars Strange ...
What a strange little book. Much is made of the fact that Stuart's parents - especially his mother - worries about him constantly, yet when he runs off to find his bird friend, he tells no one! And Stuart is obviously gay, not that there's anything wrong with that (I'm gay ... check out the illustration on page 31) He doesn't really want to date the girl, he's more interested in his canoe ...

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT For Five Year Olds
The fact that the hero of the story is a mouse does not make this a good book for young children. The language is difficult and the humor is rather understated, i.e. "The doctor was delighted with Stuart, and said that it was very unusual for an American family to have a mouse."At its heart, Stuart Little is a comedy of manners, and the fantasy takes a back seat to the witty dialogue and neat prose.Children will enjoy it at ten and love it in adulthood. ... My favorite illustration is the one where the mother mouse is feeding her son (or daughter?) an impossibly large cheese banquet, much to his/her great delight.A wonderful book!

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST MOUSE BOOK

5-0 out of 5 stars Precious memories
This was my daughters very very favorite book. She had all the words memorized by the time she was barely 3. I would ask the questions from the book and she would respond with the answers. I still ask her Whose Mouse Are You ? sometimes and her own baby will be born in October. By the way, until we find out the sex of the baby we are calling him/her mouse. Your kids will love this book too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the care of guinea pigs!
I bought this book for my daughter just before we got her first pets, two guinea pigs! The pictures are lovely and the book covers guinea pig likes and dislikes, as well as their basic needs from vitamin c to clean water. The best part though is the author's continued assertation that guinea pigslove to be cuddled!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely charming!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Charmed despite myself
My three year old brought this home from the library and while I first resisted this book, I eventually found myself mildly charmed by it. The story involves three mice, two boys and a girl, who are the best of friends until one day, the boys go off to join the local boys-only club and the girl reluctantly joins the girls-only club. This is where my objection to this book lies: the boys-only club looks like tons of fun, with boys playing pirate and such, while the girls' club shows the girls having tea parties and strategizing about how to "get a fella using mozzerella." Funny, I admit. But, why does the girls' club have to be so lame? The subtext seems to be: boys' games are fun for everyone but girls' games are just boring. But, the message in the end is that both boys and girls love adventure and want to play together. So, I will put aside my objections and continue to read this book, which has some great turns of phrase, to my daughter until it goes back to the library. But, I don't think I will be ordering it anytime soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Boys playing with girls
This is the story of three friends, 2 boys and 1 girl, who go on adventures together. The three are inseperable until they encounter a boys only club and they boys abandon Doloris. The illustrations tell us that in this club, the boys fence, play cops and robbers and the like. Doloris soon finds a girls only club that see joins. Pictures of the club tell us that the girls have tea parties, play with dolls, and do art projects. While the friends are engaging in gener appropriate actions, they are not happy and are sad when they part each morning. After a while, Doloris gets bored of these activities and asks if anyone wants to build a fort. When the girls respond negatively she decides to leave and one other girl comes with her to pick up Morris and Horace. The other boys respond negatively to playing with girls, except for one, who joins Horace, Morris, Doloris and her new friend. The five form their own club where everyone is allowed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Where this reviewer learns how many names rhyme with Dolores
It simply stands to reason that the man who brought us the wonders of Bunnicula would be a mighty fine picture book author as well.I mean, it's obvious when you consider it.James Howe's quite the talented man and "Horace and Morris but Mostly Dolores" is one of those picture books that stay with you long after an initial reading. After paging through the story I went on with my life.I went to work.I watched some television.I ate some Chinese food for lunch at a remarkably low price. And all the time that I was doing all this I'd find myself thinking back to "Horace and Morris but Mostly Dolores".I thought about some of the careful phrasings James Howe uses in the book.I thought about what he's saying about gender, and social constructions, and friendship.I thought about how well the story was paced and how you can write a really good picture book without its characters resorting to malice or nastiness. In the end, I just have to say that this is one of those stories that stays with you.You will not find yourself significantly changed by the book and your children may only find it mildly diverting rather than mind-blowing.But it's darn good.Darn tootin' good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect amount of information
I found this little book (in fact, the entire series) very interesting and just right for my 3-year-old. It gives enough information to make it a fascinating read for her without getting too much into technical details, i.e. becoming boring for someone with a still limited vocabulary. We enjoy reading this book (and looking at the detailed pictures) over and over. (Did you know that ground squirrels do hibernate whereas tree squirrels do not?). Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Will it kill Dover to print the entire book?
As a previous poster mentioned, this is not an unabridged print of Uncle Wiggily and Sammie and Susie Littletail - it's missing about fifteen stories! The lack of humorous little closings can be easily explained - the stories were partly rewritten for the 1940's edition and the closings were added then, as well as various other little rewrites, such as clarifying the setting as New Jersey, when it would have been immediately assumed from the local references when these stories were first released in the Newark Evening News.Simply put, this is the very first Uncle Wiggily book, and Garis didn't use the humorous sayings then. They first appeared in this volume at the end of one story, and he was very inconsistant with their use until about the 1920's, when he finally started using them at the end of every story.Because the original edition is the one in public domain, that is the version Dover used, rather than the 40's reprint with the closings.
2-0 out of 5 stars No "humerous little closings"
My children LOVE Uncle Wiggily stories but showed a mysterious disinterest in this book which I could never explain.Recently I brought home from the library the ancient "Uncle Wiggily and the Littletails" which I hadn't realized contains all these stories.Comparing stories from each I discovered that this Dover edition is missing the "humorous endings" from each story, which my children cherish.Odd for an edition advertised as "unabridged".Even more ironic that the introduction to the Dover specifically mentions how those endings are a favorite feature of the stories. Also the illustrations are nothing compared to George Carlson's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous bedtime stories
This is a slight and very inexpensive book, but has proved to be a hefty and well-loved book in my house. The stories are short--about 2 to 3 pages each. They are well written for reading out loud, very funny and full of surprises and suspense. Each tale ends (like The Arabian Nights stories) at a suspenseful point and promises the children that if they behave they'll get to hear how the event will unfold. Since they are short, one can read two or three stories each night, and this book can last a week. My 6 year old daughter picked up the book (after I've finished reading it) and started to read it herself. My four year old loves it. And the stories carry some important themes--such as be careful what you tell a stranger (in this case a hungry cat) yet they were not overly preachy, nor do the themes intrudes upon the drama of each story.Read more
