5-0 out of 5 stars My Life in Dog Years
This is an autobiography about Gary Paulsen. He talks about nine different dogs in this book. He talks about them, because they have helped him threw hard times when he was kid and still now as an adult. He picks them up off the street and from the pounds. He is an animal lover because of his younger experiences with animals.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I read this book as a diversion from my usual reading, and consumed it in one sitting at a Starbucks. This was a great book about the life of a man and his friends. Paulsen love for dogs and animals seems to be rooted in his isolation as a young boy, as he moved from place to place, not fitting in new communities, and living with highly dysfunctional, neglectful parents. As a child and teen, he bonded with the dogs that became a part of his life and his friends. As an adult his affection for his childhood friends never left him and he seeks to befriend those that befriended him in his early life. My Life in Dog Years will make you laugh and cry, and remind you that friendships can be made and found in the most unlikely times and places. Read and enjoy! Excellent job, Mr. Paulsen.

5-0 out of 5 stars great black and white book
Picture books without text seems so rare these days, but this one, aimed at the earliest readers (or rather listeners) is great. There are just the animal faces on each page and the black and white only colors are great for young eyes which are still developing. The pages are board book pages, so great for curious hands (and mouths). The animals are really cute and the book is only 10 pages long so perfect propped up for tummy time and letting your child enjoy the pages as long as they can handle/want to.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Book Loved to Pieces
This book has gone through four of my babies so far, each one loving it.At only a few months each of my children would stare at each page. When they were old enough to hold the book themselves, it would be the book of choice.I even have a picture of my oldest asleep at age 4 mo. in her swing holding the book open. That oldest is now 7 and really loves to "read" it to her baby siblings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Animals Black and White
This book is wonderful...my baby girl was 1 month old when we got it and she just loved it, other books and pictures lost her interest very quickly . We were amazed at how long she would gaze at the pictures and that she actually had favorites! She is now 4 months old and it is still her favorite. The Puppy and kitty pages make her smile.I recommend this book for any baby. I like this book so much i just bought 2 more copies to give as baby shower gifts! ... Read more

I agree with the review from "From School Library Journal." I did think that this book had excellent pictures and a lot of good information but did not think that it was complete.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Kids who are interested in horses really need a mentor who is experienced in all aspects of the care and handling of horses. And they could certainly use Horse Care for Kids by Cherry Hill, a horse trainer and breeder. In the past, Hill has been a judge and taught courses in horse management and training. She is also the author of 24 equestrian books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner horse book for kids
This book has wonderful illustrations depicting how to halter a horse, body language of a horse, horse colors, grooming a horse, and many more practical things to teach you to become a responsible and successful horse or pony owner. It is an easy- to-read book with 116 very informational pages. I highly recommend this book for any child interested in horses, especially one who is thinking about owning a horse. ... Read more

My kids absolutely love this book.Every time they see a dog they don't know, they ask what it is and look it up in the book. There hasn't been a dog they haven't been able to find yet.The color photographs, not illustrations, are great.I highly recommend this book, especially to kids who love dogs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for doglovers and dog haters
This book is great for dog lovers.I thought that the part about training your dog and such is dull because the pictures and accrual description of the dogs of the book is the best.It is great for someone who wants to get a dog and find which one is perfect for you.People whom already have a dog would not be board in this book. I had already had a dog before I got this and it was fun trying to find my dog and my friend's dog in this book.I think that this book is great for all ages because just looking at the pictures if fun.Anyone who says this is an awful book must be wrong only thing is there are more dogs in the back that do not have a description which means you my not find you dog in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars be not mislead, it is about the breeds, not the care

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for animal-lovers with kids in their lives
Wow! This book is a great, easy-to-read way to start teaching respect for animals to children. My son didn't understand that his chasing the cat or teasing the dog were not OK, and that animals have feelings, too, until we read this book together. Now the title is a slogan we use around the house to remind him to be nice to our pets. He loves the detailed illustrations - there are surprises on every page - and we love the easy language to read together. This is a great book for teaching children how to love and respect - and understand - animals better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book for children 9 and up.
The illustrations in this book are beautiful and easy to understand. Children can follow and understand how to care for and train their new puppy. This is not a book for people who are looking to learn about dog behavior the history of a dog. You will need to find a more informative book like; Good Owners, Great Dogs by Brian Kilcommons for that kind of information. But for older children who want to learn to care for their dog this is a good book for them.
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for children
This is an excellent book for your children if you plan to make puppy a new member of your family. It guides the children through the various stages of training a puppy, has good photographs supporting the text and highlights certain important phrases. Whislt it, of course, does not cover all aspects of dog traing, it does not need to do that: the training will be the adults responsibility, and not the child's. The child however can and should support those efforts and by reading this book can add to the training and hence become a responsible dog owner her/ himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible story incredible pictures
My son wanted this book when he heard about it at a book fair at school. It is an incredible book.We love the way it is written from a little boys perspective (Xan was 10 when the book was written.) We recently had the opportunity to meet Carol Hopcraft and her husband when they came to our city.Dooms was not really a pet - he was free to go as he liked - but he did not ever leave them.He hunted - he was not feed like a pet once he reached maturity.Shallah, his successor, did the same.I am sure their current cheetah does it as well. The book is heartwarming and is written with the love and respect they had for Dooms. This is even more evident when they talk about their life with Dooms. They, more than most of us, understand that cheetahs are wild animals. This book is not meant to tote the benefits of have a pet cheetah - it is book about the bond between humans and animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbookfor Kids or Adults
Why is it that "kids" books are sometimes so much more interesting than Adult books? As if upon reaching adulthood we some how lose interest in animals. Well, perhaps I'm a kid at heart. I found this a great book. This is a very touching story about a family's relationship with an adopted Cheetah Cub. The story is simple yet full of truth and insight. For me, it highlights the need to see animals as dignified creatures in need of our compassion and protection. This is a book that will hopefully send an important message to young readers.Regardless of whether Cheetahs shouldbe or should not be, or were or were not domesticated, this is a cool book with neat photos and I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dooms
Actually, cheetahs are not and have never been domesticated, and they are and always have been very difficult to breed in captivity. Although they do have a less aggressive attitude than typical wild cats, they are not pets and should not be. Utilizing cheetahs to hunt over the past few hundred years was not the result of captive bred cheetahs, they were wild caught. Fortunately, outside of wild orphaned cheetahs in Africa, they are not a cat that you can purchase as a pet, because they are not suited as a pet and are not domesticated. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bill Peet's sweet illustrations shine, as always, throughout this book
I own the entire Bill Peet collection of children's book that he has written/illustrated. I started reading them to my son when he was 3 years old, and am thrilled to report that he loves them as much asI do. Capyboppy is based on Bill Peet's true life experience with this lovable rodent, and while his illustrations and storyline are wonderful, this is my least favorite book in the collection. It is a little heartbreaking at the end and I came away feeling quite sad. There are many funny antics and true compassion throughout the story, and it's is a natural progression of nature that's shown, so if you are able to handle a little "sadness", you will love this book. And if anything, the pictures are wonderful to look at.

5-0 out of 5 stars The real thing!
I have been working professionally on capybaras since 1981 and this book is a beautiful portrait of what a capybara is like. The drawings, the details of the capybara's behavior are exactly what I would have expected a capybara would be as a pet. The story is also very nice, very well written and fun. Excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars CHILDHOOD FAVORITE
This book was my favorite as a child.Capyboppy is so cute and loveable what child wouldn't like him?Every time we went to the library, I'd beg my dad to check it out and read it to me.Even as an adult in my twenties, this book is just as entertaining as ever and I still think of myself as my dad's little capybarra.I'm so glad copies of it are still avaliable so I will finally be able to have my own copy and one day read it to my children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I Found This Very Helpful for Myself
I'm 22 and I still find comfort in reading this book when I think of lost ones. This book is not just for kids!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps the very young child understand the death of a pet.
Many children have experienced the death of a pet. This can be their first experience with grief and can help shape how they deal with later experiences with loss. This illustrated book deals with a child's feelings about the loss of a beloved pet. Mr. Rogers is sensitive but clear and direct when he explainsthe finality of death. This book can also be used to initiate a conversation about the death of a relative in a less threatening way. The parent may want to read the book as well to help explain it to the child. 3-0 out of 5 stars a very direct approach
While I found this book to be a good tool to discuss the loss of a pet with my 7 year old. I was a bit shocked at the directness of the issue at hand. It did bring forward the emotions that we were all feeling with the loss. This book however, does allow the child to greive and know that what they are feeling is "normal" and crying is okay. This was well done in the typical manner of "Mr. Rogers" he got me through alot as a child and now is helping me with my children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for young readers
I bought this book for my daughters 9th birthday because we decided to let her get a hamster. The book is very informative, has bright colorful pictures, and simply makes you want to read it! My daughter read the entire book in one setting, as did I. I liked the fact that each chapte focuses on the child reading the book, explaining everything in simple terms and then on the very last page of the chapter there is a just for parents list of everything that was covered in the chapter. I know I learned a few things from reading this book and I'm sure you child will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info in a "cute" package!
When I found a review of this book on hamsterific I thought it was a book about the cartoon Hamtaro, but I was wrong. It's filled with very good hamster information that's easy to read, but still more comprehensive than other hamster books I've read.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Hamster Books I ever read
I'm huge Hamtaro fan (Anime and Manga).I had been a Hamtaro fan for about a year or more when my best friend decided to get a hamster of her own.I went to a sleepover and had met her new hamster "Harmony" named after Harmony in the 2nd Hamtaro game and future character in the Hamtaro Anime Series. With that her parnets had got her this Hamster Care Book.I only looked at a few pages and I really enjoyed it.A month later, after begging, my mom finally got me a hamster (Who's name is "Bijou").She didn't get me any books because I had already researched about Hamsters and my brother had one a few years ago (But my brother didn't know how to take care of him).I decided to buy and borrow Hamster Care Books to gether more information about Hamsters.Along one of these books, I finally got the Hamtaro Hamster Care Book and I loved it more then the other books I had collected. My little cousin (Who's 5) who's planning on getting a hamster had looked at the book and understood it right away (Without me explaining any thing).I highly suggest this to any Hamtaro fan, hamster fan, animal fan, or someone who getting a hamster. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book on Dog Training
This book might be old, but it is very helpful. I use it to train all my dogs and some of them are very well behaved. (It even works with stubborn breeds!). DTFK tells about housebreaking, obedience training, tricks, and problem solving. The methods work and the dogs like them. If you get a dog, please buy this book too. Read it cover to cover before you begin with your dog's training, though.

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date techniques
The latest version of this book is from 1988 and the book uses lots of traditional, but largely out of date corrections that have been replaced in most obedience training circles with postitive training techniques.I have elected to return the book instead of having my niece learn these dog obedience techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good picturebook introduction to the world of pet ownership
New to the Cat in the Hat's Learning Library series is the zany coverage of animal friends, featuring the Cat in Hat illustrations by Aristides Ruiz and Joe Mathieu and telling of the Cat in the Hat's visit to a land of pets. Containing nonfiction information but reading with the drama and grace of fiction, Oh, The Pets You Can Get: All About Our Animal Friends is a good picturebook introduction to the world of pet ownership.
