5-0 out of 5 stars He WILL read this book.... but you should too
There's definitely no tip-toeing around in this book, which is exactly why boys will actually read it.Although I was a little shocked by the authors' candor at times, I also recognize the only way to really get through to adolescent boys is on their playing field.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I Had this Growing Up...Every 13 year old Boy Needs this Book.
I purchased this book for my friends son who is 13 years old and before giving it to her I read through it myself. All of the information is very important (12+ years old) and can help educate young boys to make decisions based on knowledge they obtained before there is a problem rather than after, like what I went through when I was growing up and I'm sure countless others have that did not have the benefit and knowledge in this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good info, a little too advanced
The first third of this book contained good information for my 11-year-old son.It explains what happens to a boy's body in a way he was able to understand. The remainder of the book also has good information, but the topics of intercourse and STDs were more than my son was ready for. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
My son is actually reading and enjoying the book. As a teenager he has many questions but he is hesitant to ask. This book came handy it covers wide range of subjects and answers questions in a direct way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Like a textbook
My 12 year old son keeps this book in a stack by his bed, but finds it too clinical--like a textbook. He likes "What's Going on On There" better because it's has a more humorous approach. As time goes on, however, he may appreciate the deeper lever of detail and information provided here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful resource
While no book on this subject is going to cover everything exactly the way you might prefer, this book does a very good job of covering a variety of topics related to sexual development. The material is presented in an easy-to-read, factual manner. After reviewing the book myself, I gave it to my 12 year old son, who looked at me as if to say "I know this stuff already".Yet the next day, he thanked me for giving him the book and said it had cleared up some misunderstandings he had.We were then able to talk about some of his questions and impressions from the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great birthday gift for 9+ year old boys
We checked this book out of the library for my son after reading about it on one of their "recommended reading" lists for boys. After watching my son walk around day after day with it, and seeing him fold down every other page in the book, I had to get him his own copy.I ordered two extras for gifts. The first one he gave was a huge hit - the boy's mom told me that her son was also enthralled with it.The third copy never even made it to a birthday party - a friend came over with her two sons (8 and 10) and they were having so much fun reading through the book that I had to give them the last copy.Soon I'll be ordering more to stock up for upcoming parties - this is a sure hit for boys.Just in time too - once they hit 9 or so, it's hard to figure out what to give as gifts since toys are beginning to lose their luster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boy Stuff is Hot Stuff!
For a 10-year old boys, summer and boredom could be synonymous. Not with the Big Book of Boy Stuff! Our son saw a classmate's book, brought often to school for free reading time, and could not bear the brief bits of time he was allowed to read his friend's.He had to have his own, to bring home, to read outside, to read in bed. This book is chock full of fascinating facts and fun activities that a boy can do on his own.10 is an age when independence rocks! This book keeps the boy and his parents happy for many long hours. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! An appropriate book for a 'tween
After going through several books with this topic, I found one that discusses the issues important to a pre-teen without being graphic, immoral and too informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I purchased this book for my twin 10-year-old son's (who will be starting 5th grade in August) to read. They had started to ask me questions about different things they had heard at school from their friends, etc., and I decided to look for books they could read that would give them some correct, age appropriate information.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Teenage Guy's Survival Guide
This book is about dating, dumping and being dumped also how to deal with it. It is about puberty changes and how to deal with them and what to do. This book is about all you need to know to be a teenager. My favorite part of the book was the part the author talked about dating. This part of thee book informed me about how to approach a girl and how not to approach a girl. It also told me never to send a friend to ask someone out for you. It told me how to act when you dump someone or if you get dumped. It told me how to act on a date and what to do and what not to do. It also said what to do on a date and what not do on a date. This part of the book told me that a little cologne goes a long way so don't over does. I recommend this book because it was a great help. Now I know how to approach a girl the right way. I know how to have a good date and what to do on a date. Another reason I recommend this book is because I know how everything works puberty wise and that it happens to everybody. The last reason I recommend this book is because it tells you everything you need to know about being a teenager.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I'm a thirteen year old boy and I reserved this book at the library to read some time ago. I found it answers a lot of questions about growing up and puberty, although the part about sex was pretty short.
5-0 out of 5 stars More! More! More!
I am a boy at age 12, and when i read this book i was amazed. I learned a lot. The stuff you cant talk about with your parents is in here. The truth is embarassing, but i loved it. The book is really funny, too. This book covers everything from your first date to masturbation. Not too much about sex, only one page. I reccomend this book for 11-16 year olds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fab-u-lous Book to get Sons Interested in Manners. "What's manners, Mom?"
I have sons and the oldest was five when grandma gifted this book to him. With little brother just 5 years behind him, we have another wave of 'what's manners?' inquiries. A Little Book of Manners for Boys is more of a picture book that just gets them started. It's a nice 'coffee' table book for boys. I set it out before their acquaintences come over- not for my boys. No, no! Mine are well versed in appropriate manners. It's for those monsters that they have decided to tame. HA! My sons shall certainly save the world- one boy at a time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leave this around the house
Although this book was met with moans and groans, I notice my 10 year old picking it up and reading it when I left it around the house. It is pleasantly presented and contains basic rules of courtesy and friendship that every child should know about.Even if they've already been told these things, or they've already sort of figured some things out, it's nice to have a little book around to support what they've heard or learned.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't go far enough
This book doesn't go into enough detail and is very vague about many etiquette situations and manners. We were hoping for some practical advice and ideas, couldn't find much here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For any guy
I almost got to hear Jon Scieszka talk about this book in person in 2005 but the fire marshal closed the large auditorium at the San Antonio convention center and a huge number of librarians were left staring at the closed doors. The overflow attendance at his talk highlighted the level of concern there is about boys and reading (or their lack thereof) today.

4-0 out of 5 stars sounds very catchy
now the question to my title- is :
4-0 out of 5 stars Bad Boy
Walter and his family live in Harlem New York. They think Harlem is a very unique place because of the people and the music going on in Harlem.Walter likes all sports and school but has a tendency to get into trouble.Growing up in Harlem witha poor family made Walter realize the racial and class struggles that surround him during his life. When I read the book I liked how the author could relate the situations in the book to the real life problems that are happening around us in 2006.I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys reading about history but also having fun reading it.This book does not have a very hard reading level and word-choice so it would be good for ages 8 to 12.I think some equally good books are River thunder and when Zachary beaver comes to town.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Motivating Memior !!!!!!!!
Bad Boy is a motivating memoir in many ways. wriiten by Walter Dean myers, this book has positive values and an interesting story.i really loved it because the book had situations which i could relate to easily.for instance "Walter, go directly to the principals office!" go to the principals office was a very familuar statement to me when i was young.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, warm, poignant author memoir
In 35 short chapters, Ralph Fletcher shares stories of his childhood neighborhood, family, and friends.Covering topics that include a description of his neighborhood, his feelings and memories of the important people in his life, games he played, school days, pets, and childhood illnesses, this story kept me entranced from start to finish.I loved the author's simple yet moving revelation of his own feelings, especially the poignant chapter about his father, "Last Kiss."

2-0 out of 5 stars The best guide for single moms (5 stars, even tho I can't edit it to show them!)
I got this book for my son when we got to the point that he had so many questions (technical in nature) that I couldn't remember the exact answer to (or don't know, not being a boy). I turned to my male friends for help, and one recommended "The Guy Book," which he had given to his5 boys and they liked a lot. My son lovedit. It has a lot of info on boys, their bodies, their issues with friends, and such necessary details as how to buy a corsage and tie a tie. My son asked intelligent questions, sparked by the book, and has read bits of it over and over.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Teen Reference book...
I enjoyed this book and I'm a grown man. lol. It presents the information in a very non threatening way for teens and fathers of teens about the "sex" questions. Fun read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Uses Great 50's Car Photos -- A Great Book for Dads to Use
This is "THE BOOK" for Dads to review with their sons. The author successfully uses "car talk" to explain becoming a man.Clever chapter titles include: "Under the Hood: Parts," "The Ignition System: How It All works,""Road Hazards: STD," "Maintenance," etc. I got a kick out of discussing the old retro-car photos with my sons. The funny retro-pictures kept the topic from getting uncomfortable and gave us guys something else to talk about other than sex ... when things got a little too uncomfortable. My sons reread to certain often.Definitely buy ............................................. (...) YOU HEAR ME: POEMS AND WRITINGS BY TEENAGE BOYS is a collection of teenage angst that will shock most any parent who reads this book. That may come as a surprise to those on the left who promote the acceptance of trash as "tolerance"... but "shocked" is probably being kind as many parents would be flat-out angry at finding their 7th-12th grader in possession of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Poetry for the Teenage Boy!
This poetry book edited by Betsey Franco is an excellent book. The poetry is written by teenage boys. The writing is freeverse. The boys tell their emotions which consists of sad, happy, and hurt feelings. They write about things that are important to them like , how they were abused mentally and phisically, how they didn't have girlfriends, and about secrets they never told any one. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for 7-9 years old
My 7 year old really liked this, and more generally this whole Landmark series is very good for young readers.Vocabulary and sentence structure are age appropriate.Content is good solid history. As opposed to much of the stuff for this age which is "silly" reading, this series lets them learn something while improving their reading skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative and inspirational book
This book was easy to read and helped me gain an understanding of the Wright brothers and the influence their mother had on their lives as well as their accomplishments and what drove them to invent, and invent, and invent! Not only did it provide a good review of their acccomplishments, but it also provided inspiration to my 11 year old daughter. These men had a can do attitude and never gave up. I recommend this book for anyone who wants knowlege of the Wright brothers, and inspiration to always keep trying.

4-0 out of 5 stars True Discription

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
Both my children enjoy this book. It helped answer some concerning questions in our house. I think the part of the ovaries and the male insides could have been left out. I thought that was a little over board. All in all they do enjoy reading and looking the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for my curious 4-yr-old!!
My 4-yr-old learned that boys and girls have different body parts a few months back and with his discovery came a slew of questions that became increasingly more difficult for me to answer. This book helped SO much.It talks about the reproductive organs of boys and girls in a very simple, direct manner and also has simple illustrations for kids to better understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars NECESSARY GUIDE FOR PRE-TEEN BOYS
Bill Zimmerman, the author, was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his writings for young people about current events and issues they face.He is former editor of Newsday, the nation's largest newspaper, and author of over a dozen books. 100 Things Guys Need To Know is an EXCELLENT cartoon styled book for pre-adolescent and adolescent boys to help them cope with the changes in their bodies, emotions, and relationships in a positive way. Nothing is more important than helping a youth know that making wise choices amidst peer pressure and internal quandaries is a good thing. This book is the perfect tool to help any boy (ages 9 - 13) thrive in his teen years and understand what is happening to himself internally and physically as well as socially. The book teaches good skills and positive choices and healthy habits in six categories: Self, Body and Mind, Family, School, Relationships, Future. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It is written to the youngster himself and is easy enough to understand, and the cartoons help the boy identify with situations common to every teen. The book is also an excellent one to read with your children to open conversation about issues you may not know he is dealing with at school or other areas of his life. A WONDERFUL book to give any boy you know, love, and want to make wise choices in order to navigate the turbulent teen years successfully and create a happy, future for himself. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Construction, Step by Step.....
"This is a deserted lot.It sits between two buildings not far from downtown. It's mostly dirt, with a few tufts of grass, some weeds, and two trees with peeling bark. It's covered with broken glass and trash.A chain-link fence keeps people out..."So begins Elisha Cooper's tribute to construction. An architect arrives with plans and surveyors. Then a backhoe "scoops up dirt like a messy eater."Soon trucks filled with building materials come, along with the many workers ready to transform this once vacant lot into a new and beautiful building.Watch workers spread and smooth concrete, saw and nail boards, seal and caulk the roof, windows, and doorways, install insulation, and build new floors, walls, and stairs.Next come the electricians, plumbers, and painters to finish the inside and get it ready for people.....Mr Cooper's lyrical text is engaging and fascinating as it moves up, down, and across the pages mimicking the building process. His watercolor and pencil illustrations capture the small details in the text and complement the story beautifully.Together, word and art offer a creative and informative lesson in how a building comes to life.Perfect for youngsters 5-10, Building is an imaginative and evocative experience."This is a building. It stands between two other buildings not far from downtown. It stands empty, waiting to be filled with people. You can't hear the hammering, can't smell the concrete, can't taste the fried chicken, can't see the measured beams. But they are all part of the building, and you can feel them."

5-0 out of 5 stars humanizing detail
My older boy, now three, has been having books about building and trucks and the like read to him now for well over eighteen months.Even with this potentially numbing single-issue reading list, we have cycled through a good number of books of this "genre" at bedtime. This is the first book that we have seen that has mentioned a port-a-john.While this might seem like an unnecessary thing (after all, why shouldn't folks who work on big rigs, drive trash trucks, fight fires, etc be like movie stars who don't go to the bathroom), it makes this otherwise simple book very effective, even after all the others we have seen.Together with other details-- the workers swap jokes, chat about last night's game, eat fried chicken, nap at lunch, etc.-- the cumulative effect is that the builders, who might otherwise seem abstractions, are made more like our boy, and us, and all of us. Our lad goes to the bathroom, why shouldn't workers? He likes jokes, etc. Their efforts seem more honest and real as a result and the book was, after all the others we have read, still was able to spark a conversation about building and like between my boy and me. ...
