Don't know much about 50 states
I have read and reviewed many children's books in my 28 years as an elementary school librarian, and have found none with more glaringly inaccurate and unclear writing:Washington is the Evergreen State, not the "CHINOOK State", Mt.St. Helens did not have "LAVA" flows as the text says it did, the section about the state says that the Chinook winds are a "PAIR of winds" and does not explain what they are, they are warm winds that sometimes flow from east to west bringing warm air west. As a native of Washington, I began, and ended, reading in the section on our state. After reading the section I did not bother to check to see if the other states information was as inaccurate and poorly written, as I knew that I certainly would not want this book in any library nor in the hands of any children, dispite the vissual appeal.
Fluff and animation...
... but very little real information.At 65 pages of large print and sprawling cartoons, rather devoid of anything exceptional.
Full of trivia kid's will find fun to learn!
My 8.5 year old LOVES this book.I actually learned several facts I wasn't aware of.(Alaska is closer to Russia than it is to the rest of the United States for instance.)This book is no encyclopedia, but it's A LOT more fun to read than one! ... Read more

I got this book for my 3-year old niece about a week before her first plane ride and vacation to the beach. By our arrival in Miami Beach she could already point to the many seagulls and tell me that they were looking for food. The simple story and illustrations were a wonderful introductionto many of the things she encountered at the beach including the waves,shells, seaweed, sandcastles, and crabs (but as a Maryland native shealready knows all about them - steamed with plenty of Old Bay seasoning,that is). These books are great!
When I was younger, I had a large collection of these books, I loved every one of them. Amazing bats was one of my favorites. This is the book to get if you want to take your kids camping and hear them say "cool, a bat" instead of "augh! a bat (scream)." The only downside is having your children quote bat facts to you when the bats come out.
