Editorial Review

The American war for independence and its aftermath shaped the brand-newnation and provided many of the patriotic heroes and legends that are stillcelebrated today. In this handsome and informative addition to DK's Eyewitnessseries, many of the finer details of life during the Revolutionary War areexplored, including, of course, the political backdrop, powerful leaders such asthe young George Washington, and dramatic battles. This is no dry textbook, however. Readers will also discover exactly what kind of clothing soldiers wore, and see actual photos of weapons, snuff boxes, restored original fightingvessels, and the silver inkstand used by Congressional delegates as they signedthe Declaration of Independence. Spy methods are described, Loyalists andpatriots are defined, and the symbols and songs of war and freedom areexplained. Even a subject as old and oft-told as the American Revolution is madefresh by D.K.'s compelling photos and enlightening text. Appetite whetted formore war stories? Take a look at these titles in the Eyewitness referencecollection: Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for young folks, good for adults
The books are very well done, pictures and timelines inclusive but are targetting younger readers. As an adult I must admit MOST of the content were things I did not know but thats more of a review of our schools than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solve the I Spy Mystery!
This is one of my favorite I Spy books because it has a lot of mystery themed riddles. As a sleuth, you will need to find certain things at the end of the riddle, such as something fancy, something missing from another page, or even the criminal responsible for this crime.
5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating!!
My 5 year-old godson is absolutely enchanted by this book. It is his absolute favorite and the first thing wants when he comes over. It has been a source of countless evenings of entertainment for our family. The layout and photography of each page is very creative. This book is one that can be enjoyed by kids of all ages, over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favourite in the I Spy series
I have been a fan of Walter Wick's photographs and Jean Marzollo's rhymes since I was nine years old and my school friends and I huddled over the mat at school trying to find all the hidden items in the pages. Now that I'm eighteen I still love these books, not so much for the riddles but for the amazing and merticulous photographs, some of which just *beg* to have a story written about them (such as 'The Ghost in the Attic' photograph on pages 14-15). Each photograph has some sort of an enigma or mystery involved in it, whether it be messages written in the letters on building blocks, lost puzzle pieces or clues to a secret birthday party.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 3rd Grade Teacher
I bought this Science Encyclopedia along with their basic Encyclopedia and I truly love it.My kids are always reading it whenever they get the chance.I have a 5 minute session after lunch before my class leaves to go to "specials." During that 5 minute teaching period I have been letting them pick out one subject area from one of the encyclopedias and then we review how to read nonfiction while looking over that subject briefly.I am amazed to see the sparks that start flying and how interested in all of the subjects the students have been. The pictures are wonderful and help students to connect with the information they are reading.I will buy more sets for my classroom because they are always in use!!!!

I love this book almost as much as the original E.Encyclopedia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Educationl Text
I'm a teacher and I find the Eyewitness books highly educational.I like the way the concepts are presented in a form without backgrounds. This gives clear facts to the reader without over taxing the attention span. The books are highly informative, presenting difficult concepts in comprehendable chunks that stimulate interest.I have almost the whole collection for my own children and they LOVE them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pictures and Descriptions
As with the other "Eyewitness" books published by DK Publishing, this one is right on the mark for a beginner and seasoned fossil collector with pictures and descriptions that correllate very well with each other.Includes information of most all common fossils and a few of harder to find fossils. Not for researching significant hard-to-find or rare fossils.Worth the price and is also available in paperback binding. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The artifacts of the great civilizations of Mesoamerica and the Andes
My assumption is that a DK Eyewitness Book entitled "Aztec, Inca & Maya" would devote sections to each of the three great civilizations that Spanish explorers encountered and eradicated in the 16th century. The Aztec empire stretched between the Pacific and the Atlantic costs of Mesoamerica, the Maya kingdom was found in the eastern part of Mesoamerica, and the Inca Empire stretched 4,000 miles along the western coast of South America. But this book considers the people of these regions to be a mosaic of tribes and nations so that most of the chapters are topical, talking about food and drink, religious life, masks, and such in terms of all of the cultures that apply. There are a few specific chapters devoted to the Incas and their ancestors and Cities of the Andes, but most toss in everything together.
2-0 out of 5 stars One of the poorest Eyewitness Books
I'm a huge fan of the DK Eyewitness series, but even so, I could not like this book despite the usual gorgeous photographs.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Way to Spark A Child's Interest!
The Eyewitness series of books is primarily aimed at children ages 8-14. They are all full of many clear bright color photographs and illustrations that are each accompanied by a paragraph or so of factual information. The Eyewitness series is a great way to spark a youth's interest in a subject. They have books on just about every topic imaginable from Archaeology to Zoology. ... Read more

Walter Wick's fun photos and Jean Marzollo's tricky riddles have returned in this I Spy "best of," a compilation of some of the duo's most entertaining "Where's Waldo?"-style visual scavenger hunts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I Spy book yet!
I like this I Spy book best of all. Not only does it have some of the best scenes from some of the previous I Spy books, but it also has some cool new riddles. Various scenes include "Rainbow Express" From I Spy Fantasy, "A is for..." From I Spy School Days, and "Baking Cookies" From I Spy Christmas. I read this whenever I feel like I need to pass the time because it is so much fun looking for things.
3-0 out of 5 stars More (and Less) of the Same
While there's nothing particularly wrong with this book, there's nothing groundbreaking, either. The pictures are taken from other books in the series, and while the riddles are new, they aren't any more difficult or involved than usual. Think of this as "ultimate" in the sense of "last in a series" (until the next one comes out), not "highest in degree or order, utmost or extreme" (definitions via WordNet).

Ancient Greek culture, which reached its peak in Athens in the 5th century B.C., produced some of the most glorious and fascinating relics of Western civilization. This terrific Eyewitness Book traces ancient Greek achievements from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic period using evidence found by archaeologists. Greek myths are introduced by way of statues, carvings, and illustrations. Like all the books of this series, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the archeological treasures of Ancient Greece
When I saw all the amazing photographs in the DK Travel Guide to Greece I figured their book on "Ancient Greece" would be equally impressive and I was correct. This book consists of a series of 2-page spreads dealing with various topics from Minoan civilization to Alexander and the Hellenistic age. Each spread has a basic paragraph of text from author Anne Pearson and then the rest is devoted to color photographs of various archeological treasures (or contemporary recreations) and informative captions. You will see dozens of examples of statutes and friezes, pottery and art of mythological figures taken from pots, many of which I have never seen before although I am have been actively looking for quite some time now because of a mythology course I am teaching. There are also contemporary photographs of historic ruins scattered throughout the book and recreations of Greek clothes, hair dressings, meals, and other aspects of daily life.4-0 out of 5 stars Vivid Photographs!
The best part of this book is the photographs. They are plentiful, taking up as much room as the print, and useful, too. They help you to see whichof the styles of architecture is which, the layout of a Greek home, andmany other things that would be hard to visualize if told only in words. This is a convenient book to have at home -as are the other eyewitnessbooks; a quick reference, and also a plain fun read. Though it is supposedto be for children aged 9 to 12, I think many teens would enjoy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very, very good!
This book is wonderful.I looked at a TON of human body books for my first grader. It seemed nearly impossible to find one for the 5-8 year old crowd that was factually thorough and had real photographs, but that wasn't too in-depth or too advanced in vocabulary. So many books for this age group are just plain simplistic and cartoony and don't do justice to the amazing machines our bodies are!

I ordered this book at the insistence of my eleven-year old son, studying in Singapore. I do not know how he got to know about it: but enough to understand that good work spreads. Having bought it, I must say that this amazing book is one of the finest investments that I made for my son. Ever since I got it for him, he is hooked to it. The presentation and the approach is stunning, to say the least. It helps in his various school projects. It also encourages him to understand why we must love the animals and protect them. The brightly colored photographs and simple rhymes of the I Spy books have a perennial appeal, as does the straightforward task they put before the child: see objects clearly on the left-hand page and pick them out from the complicated jumble on the right-hand page. The degree of difficulty varies widely from book to book, and this example from the board-book series is one of the very simplest, using for its images small areas of detail from the more complex photographs in books like

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read if you child is crazy about anything with wheels
My 21-month-old son loves trains, cars, buses, tractors, diggers, motorbikes... anything he can roll along on their little wheels. I brought him to the library one day and he picked up this book and thus began our fascination with the I-Spy series. This clever book has green cars, police cars, zooming airplanes, a long choo-choo train etc hidden in places that challenges a toddler to seek out. It actually isn't all that easy! (I missed the kitty cat face for a while...) A wonderful book to read with eye-catching illustrations and catchy rhymes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for very young toddlers
This is a "I spy" book for beginners. My 2 1/2 old was mesmerized by it the first time he saw it and immediately asked me to "read it again". However, he found all but one of the objectsrelatively quickly the first time around and now it won't take him morethan one minute to go through the whole book. I encourage him to look forobjects that are not featured on the left pages to make it morechallanging.

3-0 out of 5 stars Got out of knights
It was pretty good, but it was kind of showing out of the knight period. They wrote a lot about castles and it was titled knights. This bothered me.I really liked how it showed what a knight has as his duty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interest your children in REAL history
DK eyewitness books are some of the greatest non-fiction books around. The distinctive white background and high-quality photography gives this book an edge over any other nonfiction picture book. And -- these pictures are real! They're beautiful museum-quality photos of all things related to knights, accompanied by informative captions and text. 4-0 out of 5 stars Captured his interest for days!He keeps going back to it.

This book report is about the world's oldest continuous civilization called China. From 221 B.C to A.D 1912 in China was combined under a great and powerful empire called the Qin Empire.Ancient China was remained untouched because it was apart by the huge a scorching deserts, mountain ranges, and the ocean. It was cut off from other cultures such as India, West Asia, and Europe.China's social structure was a main role in maintaining its national stability. What also helped China together was a great philosopher named Confucius who encouraged people to lead an ordered family way of life.Once in a while the Chinese empire experienced short periods of unrest and disunity and attacks from foreigners.During those times they changed the governments and they built many innovations and technological advances such as gunpowder, paper, printing, and industrial machinery. The Chinese people still used the same customs and traditions and stayed remarkably to today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
Ancient China was the best book dealing with China that I have so far read. It was intriguing how I learned, saw, and discovered many things in only about 65 pages. The beautiful photography gave the words life. This book proves excellence truly exists and gives the word perfection an even greater new meaning. ... Read more
