DK Formula Brings Another Great Topic Introduction
DK has a great formula for introducing topics to kids. Beautiful graphics, excellent layout and good summaries of important facts surrounding their topics.
Another beautiful DK book!
DK is great at creating books full of high-quality photos. This book includes great photos of Civil War soldiers in their uniforms. It also has photos of soldiers lying dead on a battlefield and a Southern home riddled with holes from canon fire, photos I had never seen in my history books. It has good, close-up photos and drawings of the guns, grenades, hardtack biscuits and other everyday items used by soldiers back then. Very interesting!

The DK Eyewitness series takes on the entire Civil War
I think that with the topic of the Civil War the DK Eyewitness Book series has met its match.The goal of these wonderfully illustrated books is to give readers the equivalent of going to a museum, albeit one that is able to collect photographs, paintings, and artifacts from dozens of choice sources.However, when you are dealing with a topic as large as the Civil War all you can really do is scratch the surface and provide readers with a general introduction."Civil War" is definitely not the first book a young student would turn to for information about the topic, but for those whose previous readings have kindled a passion for this pivotal period in American history this book will be a treat, primarily in its depiction of artifacts.Young Civil War buffs will already be familiar with the portraits of the Union and Confederate generals, and many of the photographs and etchings will be familiar from other illustrated works.Consequently, they will find the contemporary photographs of priceless historic artifacts to more interesting that the familiar period illustrations.Read more

PIRATE is a great resource for kids 9 and older. The photographs and illustrations, combined with the very informative text, make this a great addition to any pirate enthusiasts library. I actually used this book, and many adult books, as part of my pirate research for one of my novels. PIRATE will take the reader from ancient pirates through the golden age of piracy (1700's) until piracy decline in the 19th century. However, as recent news reports will attest, there are still pirates out there sailing our seas.
So Great it Lasts a Decade
Right, so I've had this book for 10 years, and yeah, it's probably a slightly different version, but regardless, I've had it for ten years and it's downright useful. I'm an artist and writer, and it's a great thing to have. The pictures are very, very vivid, and the short tidbits on piraticalness are excellent accompanionments. In fact, this book started my interest in piracy. And though it is definitely not the only book in my pirate collection nowadays, it's just as loved and useful as when it was.

Not for very young children
This book is not for young children.I purchased this for my 5 year old who is just crazy about pirates and I was did not end up giving it to him.Heed the age recommendations.There are a few disturbing images of pirate punishment devices.It is an informative and interesting book for older children though. ... I loved this because nice and i like this book Great book for children
My 4 1/2 year old son loved this book. The facts were very interesting. He spends a lot of time looking at each picture and remembers the facts as I have read this book to him several times. Each time through it he findsdifferent things to keep him excited. I would say it's his favorite bookright now!

Childen might like it
This book gives the most childish facts. I guess to a young child who only began his/her interest in Titanic might find this book as a good start, otherwise it is pointless buying this book, since it gives nothing new andgives inaccurate drawings. The best cowboy book ever!!!!!!!!!
I like this book on Cowboy (Eyewitness Books) & I think it's a cool book & in this book you can see why what an athentic chuckwagon looks like, how an expert ropes a calf, a rodeo rider in action on a wild steer, how a saddle is made & a Mongolian lassoing a wild horse. Yee-haw for your eyes

The people, places, battles, and weapons of America's Indochina struggle
By the time I got my draft card the Vietnam War was just about over; besides I am deaf in one ear so they were never going to take me and making any sort of decision was a moot point.Today what I find interesting that is although I basically lived through the Vietnam War, I do not have the same sense of what happened during the war that has defined all American military action ever since that I do for the Civil War or World War II.For that matter, I think I have a better understanding of the chronology of the American Revolution and Desert Storm than I do of the war in Vietnam.Fortunately, this Eyewitness Books volume devoted to the "Vietnam War" helps me move a bit beyond the sketchy understanding I had when I open the book (basically, something that happened in the Gulf of Tonkin was used as an excuse to escalate American military involvement, the corrupt government of South Vietnam fell, the Tet offensive surprised everybody, Nixon bombed enemy troops in Cambodia, there was a massacre at My Lai, and we left by helicopters).

Great for detail-oriented kids and vocab building!
My two boys, ages 3 and 2, both pull this book off the shelf over and over. I use it to teach the younger one new vocabulary (both in English and Spanish) and the older one to continue to practice his numbers (also in both languages), as well as colors. It's a great addition to the workbook Flip Flop Spanish, and also just for fun.., my littlest, a one-year-old girl, even looks at the pages and will sit with the boys to watch them. They're sturdy pages, full of all KINDS of things. The kind of book you find something new each time you open it. It has little lists to find items as well.
One of the best books we own
My 15 month old son absolutely *loves* this book, and I do too.The pictures are very interesting with lots of easily identifiable items in them for kids to pick out. (He has learned quite a bit of vocabulary from this book and practiced words he already knows--ball, clown, train, etc.)One problem that I have found with a lot of books for babies and young children is that the rhyme schemes and rhythm of the text are often pretty wonky.Not so in this case.This book is beautifully written.The rhymes are fun and easy to read.Highly reccommended!!

Long shelf life
I have two boys, 15 months old and 3 1/2 years old, and both love this book. My 15-month old not only begs me to read it to him, but is starting to learn to identify numbers (and many other objects) from it. Very good beginner book on carniverous plants
We bought a few carniverous plants from a nursery, which is how my kids got interested in the subject. I borrowed this book from the library. The book further peaked the kids' interest in the plants (they check the plants every day). We got a lot out of this book. In fact, we read it over and over and over again for so many time that I bought a copy. Eyewitness Reader, Plants bite back
Another interesting book from DK that kids will love. It was well written and kept my interest all the way to the end. Arms & Armor is a great book!!!
I love this book so much that I decided to skip writing & English one day and do a report about it instead.There are so many different weapons.Don't look at that one star rating because he doesn't know what "arms" means.He thought it meant arms like a limb.
This book was more about weapons than about arms and armor.
This book isn't really about arms and armor-- it's about weapons. If you are looking for a book that is compleatley about arms and armor, then find another book, but if you want a book that is about the history of weapons, then this is the book for you. Plant A book review
The Most interesting thing was that when butterflies are sleeping their proboscus is tucked under their head. The most surprising thing in the book was that rose hips have ten to one hundred times the vitamin C than any other food. Plants is an excellent book. It told alot of interesting information. Anyone would like to read it, for a report or just for fun.
