This book looks small but contains a lot. Whether you are a student or just an enthusiastic it is good idea to have a book that fits in to your pocket. It delightfully explains buildings and architecture from the ages point of view to the architectural styles, materials with a basic graphics and pictures. 5-0 out of 5 stars Four Button Holes?
I bought this book for my son who is 4 years old... he loves it, but most of the items listed are a little too hard for him to find, so we pick other, more obvious items and ask him to find them and he loves it.We have founf everything except for the four buttonholes on the page with the teddy bears and clowns and dalmations.... its driving us crazy!! Has anyone found them?

5-0 out of 5 stars summary of the prequels
"Galactic Crisis!" is a summary of the Star Wars prequels. As with the films, the plot begins with the blockade of Naboo and ends with the new hope that infant Luke Skywalker will eventually become a Jedi and help restore the Republic. The chronological order will help clarify episodes one through three for readers. The illustrations are large, high-quality and extracted from the films. "Galactic Crisis" is an enjoyable journey through the Star Wars prequels.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Origins of Darth Vader.
STAR WARS: GALACTIC CRISIS! is a Level 4 DK Readers children's book. It was written for youngsters who have a proficient reading level in mind. The book tells the story told in the first three episodes of George Lucas Star Wars saga: THE PHANTOM MENACE, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, and REVENGE OF THE SITH. The book is filled with pictures from all three movies and includes a vocabulary at the end of the book. This book is intended for children, but adults who are Star Wars fans can enjoy it, too--it actually filled in a couple of gaps from THE PHANTOM MENACE and ATTACK OF THE CLONES that I didn't get from just watching the films. Overall, a great gift for young Star Wars fans. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The Kiddie Version
Well this book is fine if you want the 8th grade version of US history. Of course, I myself doubt the accuracy of the book. If you look on page 141 you'll find a lovely picture of "Stalin" which tells you the man in the center of the photo is Stalin. I nearly died laughing because any idiot could see that the man in the bright white outfit standing in the center was not Stalin. Stalin is actually standing two men away to his right. I wonder if in fact this was done on purpose, so that a person just glancing at the image would simply view Stalin as this strong dictator that we must fear, instead of the rather weak person he looks like in the photo (not that Stalin was weak of course...)
5-0 out of 5 stars Read it for fun!
The book came with the Movie "National Treasure". The movie was...not bad. But I really enjoyed the book. I was foreign born and learned American History among other history classes in high school. I went on to write History study guides for students later on.
4-0 out of 5 stars Setting the story straight
This is a concise history of the United States, told from a decidedly liberal point of view.Davis begins his story with the various discoveries of America, informing us of Columbus motivations, Ericksons settlements, and the Native American migrations of 35,000 years ago.He continues with stories of the French and Indian Wars, the founding of the United States, the Civil War, Teddy Roosevelt, and the Twentieth Century events through the presidency of Ronald Reagan.Read more

"One of the most famous libraries of the ancient world was at Alexandria in Egypt. Scholars and scientists came from all over the Greek-speaking world to study there and to add to the library's collections by translating and copying more tests. At one tiome it is said to have more than 400,000 works on papyrus rolls stored on shelves, each with a label to identify it." 5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining book about books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, Great Series, Great Book!
There are no bad volumes among the dozens in the "Eyewitness" Books, but in this case, the publishers have really gone out of their way to give us something special! There is a lot of neat stuff in this book, which is all about the oceans of planet earth, and the plant and animal life that calls the oceans home. Full of factoids and the kind of wonderful illustrations that compel you sit and stare for minutes, this book is pure and simple great fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Educationl Text
I'm a teacher and I find the Eyewitness books highly educational.I like the way the concepts are presented in a form without backgrounds. This gives clear facts to the reader without over taxing the attention span. The books are highly informative, presenting difficult concepts in comprehendable chunks that stimulate interest.I have almost the whole collection for my own children and they LOVE them!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Intresting book but doesn't focus on anything.
If you want to see sharks look at eyewitness SHARK. If you want to see Whales look at Eyewitness WHALE. This book has both whales and sharks, but doesn't focus on them. This book is good because it has a little bit ofeverything from the Ocean, but if really love sharks or whales, forexample, then you would proubuly soak up a whole lot more imformation thenthis book. But that doensn't mean this book is bad. Like I said, this bookhas a little bit of everything from the ocean. You should buy this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flying Through the Galaxy.
STAR PILOTS is actually an inaccurate title for this young readers Star Wars book. The book really doesn't have much to say about pilots, but is all about space craft flown in the Star Wars universe. While there are a few non-space vehicles described, e.g. podracers, most of the book is dedicated to famous Star Wars vehicles.X-Wings, TIE Fighters, the Millenium Falcon, the Executor, Slave 1, and the Invisible Hand are all mentioned as well as escape pods and Republican gunships. The book is filled with pictures from the movies, which makes it attractive for young readers. Though this is a level 3 book, many of the words seem more difficult than that too me. However, the books chronological order makes it easier to make sense of it all. Overall, this is a great book for young Star Wars fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars a tour of the great flying vehicles
"Star Pilot" is a tour of Star Wars' great flying vehicles. The title isn't entirely accurate since the focus isn't actually on pilots, but rather the machines. Beyond this, the scope is broader than space ships alone as the book includes pod racers and republic gunships. The scope includes the entire saga, starting with the droid control ship seen in the first minute of the "Phantom Menace" and ending with the Super Star Destroyer, seen in Episode six's final battle. The chronological order makes the book comfortable to follow. While the text is large, the vocabulary is much higher than the self-described level 3. The illustrations are large, high-quality and extracted from the films. While not comprehensive by any means, "Star Pilot" is an enjoyable tour of the most important vehicles of the Star Wars saga. ... Read more

Editorial Review

In the area between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico lies the most mysterious expanse of water in the world: the Bermuda Triangle. Over the last 50 years, 1,500 people have disappeared here without a trace, and many more have experienced bizarre and inexplicable incidents. Throughout history, ships, planes, sailboats, and flying boats have encountered thick yellow fogs out of blue sky, compasses and other navigational instruments going haywire for no apparent reason, and peculiar unidentified underwater crafts. In Andrew Donkin's eye-opening book, readers will find a section on possible natural explanations for the mystery, and another on "out of this world" theories about what's going down in the Bermuda Triangle. What does it take to hold down a job in space? Linda, an astronaut on a space shuttle, describes all the ups and downs of her thrilling job in this Level 2 Dorling Kindersley book. It takes a lot of preparation and training to take a rocket trip to space. Linda has to pass medical tests, practice moving on a machine that mimics weightless space, and learn how to repair a telescope underwater (which is a bit like being in space). Once the shuttle lifts off, Linda floats around in zero gravity, eats food contained in sealed packets so it doesn't drift away, exercises on special machines, and dons a jet-propelled backpack that enables her to walk out in space and repair the broken telescope.Read more

Do you know which British queen ruled for 63 years? Who the first royalbookworm was? Which king brought lions and camels and polar bears (oh my!) toLondon? If you don't know much about the kings and queens of England, salvationis here! This regal entry in Kenneth C. Davis's Don't Know Much About seriesexplores the amazing real lives (and some of the made-up stories) of two dozenof the most interesting members of the British monarchy over the last thousandyears. In keeping with other titles in the popular series, Davis uses a livelyquestion-and-answer format, along with illustrator S.D. Schindler's humorousartwork, to introduce readers to the sometimes bizarre world of royalty, rightup to present day, when young prince and heir to the throne William wears anelectronic tracking bracelet to keep him in constant contact with palacesecurity (apparently Harry can run around untracked). A complete chronologicallisting of all the kings and queens of England concludes the book. (Ages 6 to10) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful series
This book is extremely interesting. It follows the format of the rest of the "Don't Know Much" series and mixes interesting facts with history. My only problem with this book is that it didn't give any sort of a timeline for the order of the Kings and Queens.

5-0 out of 5 stars History, Trivia, Facts, and Fun.....
Do you know which king wasn't a king, refused the crown, and called himself Lord Protector?Who was England's first properly crowned queen, not just the king's wife?Which queen served the longest, 63 years, and what was so good about "Good Queen Anne?"Why did George V change his last name to Windsor? And when Edward IV died, what happened to the princes in the Tower of London?Find the answers to these and many, many other intriguing questions in Kenneth Davis' Don't Know Much About The Kings & Queens Of England.Written in an easy to read, question and answer format, and complemented by S D Schindler's playful and humorous artwork, Mr Davis fills his book with fascinating history, engaging fun facts, and entertaining trivia about twenty-four of England's most interesting kings and queens, and the times in which they lived.Perfect for youngsters 9-12, this is the latest entry in Mr Davis' marvelous Don't Know Much About series, and as he tells the reader in his introduction, "...this one proves that real history about real people is a lot more fun than a bunch of simple dates and facts. And the true stories of some of the most famous monarchs of England are much more fascinating than you'd ever imagine."

2-0 out of 5 stars Disjointed, disappointed
I wanted a book to share with my 5th grader, to give an overview of the English monarchy and a feeling for the scope and sweep of British history.Instead, this book gives only a rather disjointed look at a small selection of monarchs, and does not manage to connect people and events in any kind of meaningful timeline.I didn't expect in-depth analysis, but was definitely disappointed with the isolated, and rather fuzzy, snapshots of history that this book presents. ... Like all the Eyewitness books, the quantity of information in Castle is both its strong point and weak point. We are taken to castles through time as well as in different cultures, and both the architectural and sociological aspects are examined. However, many of the facts and pictures included on a given page seem rather random and do not fit into a coherent general presentation.1-0 out of 5 stars Not good.
Eyewitness Castles, Medieval Life, Knights: Boring. Eyewitness Castle isn't that good. It is very boring. The water Eyewitness books like Eyewitness SHARK are far more better then Castles, Medieval Life andKnights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for Eyewitness Books!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE VOLCANOES AND EATHQUAKES
THIS DK BOOK IS IN FIRST PLACE.
3-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant coverage of the subject
This is one of the better DK Eyewitness books Ive read.It contained a pleasant mix of hard science, accounts of sensationalistic disasters, and the effects on the environment / cultures. The usual mind-boggling amount of details and facts are accompanied by numerous pictures and drawings to keep younger and more mature readers interested. One oddity is that this ended on a seemingly odd topic--the role of gods and religion in peoples interpretation of volcanoes and earthquakes.Just prior to this the study of volcanoes, and improvements in detection / building codes had been addressed (a very forward-looking topic) but then the last page is about gods (a historical perspective topic).Whatever. ...
